Exclusive: Les Moonves Was Obsessed With Ruining Janet Jackson’s Career, Sources Say

After the "wardrobe malfunction" at the 2004 Super Bowl, sources say, the CBS chief executive was incensed at the singer.

One thing that allies and critics of Les Moonves, the CEO and chairman of CBS, agree on is that he tends to remember who his enemies are, and exact revenge on them on his terms. From actors to entertainment lawyers, people who ended up on the wrong side of Moonves would often become his target for years after they upset him.

Although Moonves is embattled and likely to be ousted from CBS amid sexual harassment allegations (reportedly with a significant severance payment) following an investigation by The New Yorker, many women and men whom I contacted about Moonves’ conduct were reluctant to speak to me, even when I told them they could speak off the record.

One target of Moonves’ ire and vengefulness, according to multiple sources, was Janet Jackson.

Jackson became a years-long fixation for Moonves after the so-called “wardrobe malfunction” of 2004, when her breast was exposed for nine-sixteenths of a second after Justin Timberlake tore a piece of fabric off her bustier during their Super Bowl halftime performance. CBS and MTV (a subsidiary of Viacom, the parent company of CBS at the time), which produced the halftime show, faced a torrent of criticism and a $550,000 Federal Communications Commission fine.

Jackson and Timberlake both said the incident was truly a malfunction ― that Timberlake was only meant to rip away the leather on Jackson’s bustier to reveal red lace, but instead ripped away everything, leaving her breast exposed to over 100 million Super Bowl fans.

Moonves, however, was convinced it wasn’t a malfunction, but rather an intentional bid to stir up controversy. Moonves has been open about the fact that the incident caused him embarrassment, and he told sources who spoke to me that Jackson, in his mind, was not sufficiently repentant.

Moonves banned Jackson and Timberlake from the 2004 Grammys broadcast airing on CBS the week after the Super Bowl. But Timberlake was allowed to perform after he tearfully apologized for the incident, according to conversations Moonves had with my sources.

The CBS chief executive, according to sources who spoke to me, was furious that Jackson didn’t make a similarly contrite apology to him. The fallout from the incident inflicted significant damage on Jackson’s career ― which until that point had produced 10 No. 1 hits ― and still reverberates to this day.

Moonves ordered Viacom properties VH1 and MTV, and all Viacom-owned radio stations, to stop playing Jackson’s songs and music videos. The move had a huge impact on sales of her album “Damita Jo,” which was released in March 2004, just a month after the Super Bowl.

A major point of controversy, particularly among Jackson’s black fans, was that the reaction to the wardrobe malfunction fell solely on Jackson’s shoulders, even though Timberlake was the one who actually pulled off the fabric to reveal her breast. While Jackson’s career was significantly damaged, Timberlake’s flourished. CBS insiders who spoke to me felt strongly that Moonves played a large part in how Jackson was perceived by the public.

A spokesperson for CBS declined to comment for this story.

Seven years after the 2004 incident, Moonves told several sources he was furious when he found out Jackson had signed a book deal with Simon & Schuster for her book True You: A Journey to Finding and Loving Yourself. Simon & Schuster is owned by Viacom.

“How the fuck did she slip through?” Moonves asked while recounting the story to a source who spoke to me. He told another source that heads were going to roll as a result of the deal.

It’s not clear whether Moonves ever actually took action against anyone who gave Jackson the book deal, but his tone when he spoke about Jackson was so aggressive, one source said they couldn’t speak to me on the record because “I’m not interested in having that man following me to the grave and trying to screw me over the whole time.”

I KNEW I liked that guy for SOME reason!

by Anonymousreply 1September 7, 2018 5:26 AM

What a nasty little man he is.

by Anonymousreply 2September 7, 2018 5:33 AM

He's a HUGE investor in Chipotle (Baja Fresh's main competitor .)

by Anonymousreply 3September 7, 2018 5:48 AM

A tweet from Yashar Ali in which he posts a video of Julie Chen talking about Janet Jackson:

Just found this clip of @JulieChen talking about Jackson. She appears clinical in discussing it and notes Jackson didn't apologize (she did) and Timberlake did. Watch the whole clip, it's telling as everyone else is excited about Janet and Julie isn't.

by Anonymousreply 4September 7, 2018 5:48 AM

So this was a private tearful apology that Timberlake made to Moonves?

by Anonymousreply 5September 7, 2018 5:50 AM

R4 Julie is basically lying to her audience in that clip. She’s acting as if what she’s relaying was industry gossip that she heard at the time of the incident. She’s stating what she probably listened to when Les came home each night ranting and raving about Janet Jackson. Also she blatantly lies when she says Janet did not apologize. Janet and Justin both apologized to Les in order to perform on the Grammys the following week. Justin apologized in tears so Les let him back on. Janet was not crying when she apologized so she was denied a spot on the show. What’s not being said is that Les was probably also expecting sexual favors from Janet in order to gain his forgiveness. He can’t leave CBS soon enough and he can take his complicit lying wife with him. To lie and say Janet never apologized is just wrong especially knowing the 14 year war your husband has waged against the woman and his never ending quest to destroy her career. Just fucked up on so many levels.

by Anonymousreply 6September 7, 2018 8:36 AM

I agree, R6. That show needs to dump Julie pronto.

by Anonymousreply 7September 7, 2018 12:36 PM

Y'all are reading too much into that video clip

by Anonymousreply 8September 7, 2018 12:43 PM

America saw a black woman’s nipple for LESS than a second....... Th Horror......

by Anonymousreply 9September 7, 2018 12:49 PM

IN real time I had no idea I'd seen Janet's nipple. It seemed like that incident was so overblown when it happened.

I hear Moonves may get a HUGE payout to leave CBS over the sexual harassment charges. Doesn't seem right.

by Anonymousreply 10September 7, 2018 12:51 PM

Janet ruined her own career

by Anonymousreply 11September 7, 2018 12:52 PM

[quote]likely to be ousted from CBS

LOL! Not happening.

by Anonymousreply 12September 7, 2018 12:54 PM

Damita Jo? Is that one of the Clampetts?

by Anonymousreply 13September 7, 2018 12:55 PM

I barely remember any of this EXCEPT thinking that the reaction and furor was ridiculously overblown. Why in the world was Les so embarrassed?

by Anonymousreply 14September 7, 2018 12:57 PM

God! SO overblown! And Moonves will be fired, yes, will bail with over a million settlement! Sad.

by Anonymousreply 15September 7, 2018 12:59 PM

What a POS. Karma got him, regardless

by Anonymousreply 16September 7, 2018 2:35 PM

Baja Fresh you say R3...

by Anonymousreply 17September 7, 2018 2:56 PM

[quote] Janet ruined her own career

Arguably. It now makes sense why her commercial stature dropped so precipitously. There were good songs that just did not catch on. Moonves told MTV and VH1 to ignore it. She was a video artist. So there's a component of sabotage by Moonves. I'd like to hear more about it.

R18 All the pieces seem to be coming together now. I never got why Janet’s fall was so hard and so fast. I’d be curious to know if Janet herself was aware of any of this.

She would be smart to take advantage of this attention now as part of her comeback. I’m not so sure she will though. She’s always been so reserved. I would love for her to drag Les Moonves and describe in detail how she apologized to him and how he allegedly propositioned her, she refused he kicked her off the Grammys, destroyed her career and in the process bolstered that of mediocre talents Justin Timberlake’s.

by Anonymousreply 20September 7, 2018 3:54 PM

Julie Chen really needs to just go away when her husband does.

by Anonymousreply 21September 7, 2018 9:57 PM

It's truly amazing how cartoonish these boorish rich white men are. They're every bad stereotype. All Mr. Burns. Is there one out there that isn't a total abusive mental case? Jesus Christ. They all have mommy issues and have to get even with the world. We have one serving in the White House right now.

by Anonymousreply 22September 7, 2018 10:13 PM

R12 Moonves is being ousted. That's not in question. The only thing not determined yet is the terms of his departure.

It's just as well because he would have been finished by the Janet Jackson thing anyway.

[R20] Janet and her team are trying to deflect from my movie. But ummm I ain't going nowhere

by Anonymousreply 24September 7, 2018 11:37 PM

It's amazing to think back to when this flash of boob was such a scandal and now we have tv shows like Animal Kingdom, for example, that show pretty graphic (for broadcast tv) sex between two men.

by Anonymousreply 25September 8, 2018 2:32 AM

The hysteria was pure puritanical sickness. And in the midst of the Iraq War, but this was more offensive right? Freak show culture.

by Anonymousreply 26September 8, 2018 3:47 AM

#JusticeforJanet

Nothing makes this right again, but if you're really a fan of Janet.....or a black man or girl over 25,,,, we already been knew.

So stupid the way she was punished in REAL time at the time (and forever) while Justin cried and threw her under the bus. I'm not too upset about Janet Jackson's life or career or cash, but Moonves is going to turn out to be many kinds of a monster. The blatantly unfair misogynist treatment of Janet by the powers that be AND many others seems disgusting now. Fuck Les Moonves.

by Anonymousreply 27September 8, 2018 3:58 AM

Of course all this comes out nearly 15 years after the fact, when the damage was already done. We should all rally behind her and support her new single, Made For Now (No, it's not a new Baja Fresh jingle.)

by Anonymousreply 28September 8, 2018 4:17 AM

I’m disgusted by Julie Chen too. Take her out with her trashy misogynist husband. Knowing that her husband worked to destroy Janet’s career for 14 years she decides to go on TV and twist the knife in a little deeper and claim that Janet never apologized? Why? You’re just lying for lyings sake at that point or you’ve been lying so long about Janet that you now believe the lie.

by Anonymousreply 29September 8, 2018 5:19 AM

Of course Janet and her team including the record label knew that she was being blacklisted. The real question is why didn’t they fight back, hard, 15 years ago? Is it possible that if they did, Moonves or MTV would reveal something that Janet wants to remain hidden? Such as the real reason why she was wearing a nipple shield and a tear-away leather corset?

by Anonymousreply 30September 8, 2018 5:29 AM

[quote]Exclusive: Les Moonves Was Obsessed With Ruining Janet Jackson’s Career

Well, it worked.

by Anonymousreply 31September 8, 2018 5:58 AM

What is most interesting about that clip at R4 is the supreme confidence of Julie Chen. She really believed that her lie wouldn't be exposed because she was Mrs. Les Moonves.

Now, with social media, it's so easy for the little people to go back to her prior statements and make her look like the cynical handmaiden she has always been instead of the empowered woman bs that she pushes about herself.

I think it says a lot about Andy Cohen that he is besties with her.

by Anonymousreply 32September 8, 2018 12:27 PM

Janet was blacklisted as soon as her music started to suck. What a coincidence!

by Anonymousreply 33September 8, 2018 1:18 PM

R25, animal kingdom shows graphic gay sex???

by Anonymousreply 34September 8, 2018 1:18 PM

It's too bad Timberlake and Jackson didn't have the balls to stand up and say, "Yes, we planned to do it because we are badass." Instead they blamed it on a poor costume designer.

by Anonymousreply 35September 8, 2018 3:46 PM

The backlash from the Super Bowl tit exposure was that the public was disgusted with her. How has everyone forgotten this? No one bought her shitty albums or wanted to see her after exposing herself at the super bowl. Disgusting behavior, and the public turned on her.

by Anonymousreply 36September 8, 2018 4:36 PM

How could you be an old woman 20 years ago and still be alive today R36? Jesus fucking christ, it should never have been such a big deal. It's the racist element that made y'all mad and you probably don't even know it.

Timberlake was 22 and Janet was 37....he was singing to her "I'm gonna have you naked by the end of this song"

[quote] But to others, his seeming absolution, while Jackson continued to take heat, was a sign of white privilege and male privilege among the media and general public. Two years later, Timberlake appeared to accept that explanation, saying, “I probably got 10% of the blame, and that says something about society … I think that America’s harsher on women. And I think that America is, you know, unfairly harsh on ethnic people.”

This is something Janet fans have long suspected.

It's nice to see the receipts years later.

Janet should headline the 2019 Super Bowl as payback.

by Anonymousreply 38September 9, 2018 1:56 AM

This was clear and blatant racism from the old, rich, white media .

If it was Britney or Xtina who had the wardrobe malfunction, the repercussions would have been very different.

by Anonymousreply 39September 9, 2018 2:00 AM

Justin never came to Janet’s defense. I’ve always felt that his silence made him as complicit as the rest of “American society.” He was nowhere to be found when Britney was battling her mental health issues, either.

by Anonymousreply 40September 9, 2018 2:11 AM

Penny got hit with a hot iron and Janet got blackballed for virtually nothing.

by Anonymousreply 41September 9, 2018 2:14 AM

Moonves is trash. Howard Stern talked in depth last week on his show about how MOONHEAD was going to try to ruin him by suing him for millions before he left for satellite radio. Howard went with his lawyer to Moonves’s office and broke down in tears asking Les why he was doing this to him. Les was casual about it, saying yes, we’re going to sue you. Howard got back at him by going on Letterman and spilling tea, and Les (who is notorious for hating being publicly humiliated) quickly dropped the suit. This bastard’s comeuppance could have happened sooner, but thank the stars it’s finally here.

by Anonymousreply 42September 9, 2018 7:31 PM

I tweeted Julie Chen a video that one of Janet’s fans posted to social media, which shows clips of Janet’s public apology spliced with Julie saying on The Talk how “One apologized, the other one didn’t and Justin ended up attending the Grammys,” as if to say that Janet didn’t apologize. La Chen is trash too.

There is no way Julie Chen can show her face at CBS again.

by Anonymousreply 46September 11, 2018 9:07 AM

Julie Chen is a homewrecker

by Anonymousreply 47September 11, 2018 9:36 AM

She changed her whole face. From looking asian to mildly hawaiin/Pacific islander.

by Anonymousreply 48September 11, 2018 3:05 PM

They’re still at it, suppressing her latest single with Daddy Yankee.

by Anonymousreply 49September 11, 2018 3:18 PM

[quote]There is no way Julie Chen can show her face at CBS again.

There's no way Janet can show her old face in public again.

by Anonymousreply 50September 15, 2018 1:34 PM

This story reveals Justin Timberlake as even more of a cint.

by Anonymousreply 51September 15, 2018 5:34 PM

I've always wondered why Janet just disappeared the last decade and some years.

Now we know it was all a sabotage by les moonves. That's really interesting too.

Janet, Julie, and les all have something in common with each other.

There all minorities! Les is Jewish, Julie is chinese, and Janet is an African-American woman. How the fuck does two other minorities go out of there way to hurt another minority? And then a black woman at that.

That makes me even more mad. Especially given the history and hardships of Jews and chines people.

But to fuck with the career and lively hood of someone who made an artist mistake in a corporate setting. And completely abusing your power to her people who don't kiss your ass. Is really unfortunate.

This incident just explained the last 15 years for me as it pertains the Janet Jackson and her career. Or the lack thereof her career.

Fuck les and Julie there both trash.

by Anonymousreply 52September 15, 2018 6:52 PM

Janet has persevered, but he did do damage to her career. Her taped apology was enough, but because she didn’t call him crying the way that PUSSYlake did, he decided to retaliate. They should give his entire severance package to the charity of Janet’s choice AND she should sue.
