Best bottled water?

I say Evian - it's so delicious and refreshing.

What say you?

Unless you live in France your Evian water has a very dirty carbon footprint. Oh, by the way, it runs out of the Buvette Cachat for free in Evian.

This is frau-adjacent gay stupidity here. "What say you, OP?"

Aquafina

by Anonymousreply 14September 6, 2018 7:19 AM

In the past decade, the bottled water market has more than doubled in the United States, surpassing juice, milk, and beer to become the second most popular beverage after soft drinks. According to a 2003 Gallup poll, three in four Americans drink bottled water, and one in five drink only bottled water. Together, consumers spent some $10 billion on the product last year, consuming an average of 26 gallons of the stuff per person, according the Beverage Marketing Corporation. At the same time, companies spend some $70 million annually to advertise their products. Typical are Aquafina's ads advertising the beverage as "the purest of waters," Dasani's ads contending the water is "pure as water can get."

In fact, says Kellett, not only does tap water often taste the same as bottled water, but it is also often safer to drink as well. "They are spending tens of millions of dollars every year to undermine our confidence in tap water," she says, "even though water systems here in the United States are better regulated than bottled water." That's because tap water is regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which imposes strict limits on chemicals and bacteria, constant testing by government agencies, and mandatory notification to the public in the event of contamination.

In fact, many times bottled water is tap water. Contrary to the image of water flowing from pristine mountain springs, more than a quarter of bottled water actually comes from municipal water supplies. The industry is dominated by three companies, who together control more than half the market: Coca-Cola, which produces Dasani; Pepsi, which produces Aquafina; and Nestlé, which produces several "local" brands including Poland Spring, Arrowhead, Deer Park, Ozarka and Calistoga (a fact that itself often surprises participants in the Tap Water Challenges). Both Coke and Pepsi exclusively use tap water for their source, while Nestlé uses tap water in some brands.

Of course, Coke and Pepsi tout the elaborate additional steps they take that purify the water after it comes out of the tap, with both companies filtering it multiple times to remove particulates before subjecting it to additional techniques such as "reverse osmosis" and ozone treatment. Reverse osmosis, however, is hardly state of the art -- essentially consisting of the same treatment applied through commercially available home tap water filters, while ozonation can introduce additional problems such as the formation of the chemical bromate, a suspected carcinogen. In March 2004, Coca-Cola was forced to recall nearly 500,000 bottles of Dasani water in the United Kingdom due to bromate contamination that exceeded the U.K. and U.S. limit of 10 parts per billion. This past August, three grocery stores chains in upstate New York who all used local company Mayer Bros. to produce their store brands issued recalls after samples were found contaminated with more than double the bromate limit; in some cases, contaminated water was apparently sold for five weeks before the problem was detected.

There is a special place in Hell for you idiots who needlessly trash the environment with your fucking stupid bottled water and all the discarded plastic that creates.

No, don't tell us that you recycle. Go read about recycling. Recycling is not an answer. Elimination of plastic waste at the beginning of the food supply chain is the only effective response to this problem. Package the water in glass bottles. Those really can be effectively recycled.

by Anonymousreply 32September 6, 2018 1:17 PM

Purified water is probably the best type of water to drink. The best way to get minerals is from the food you eat NOT from water.

by Anonymousreply 44September 6, 2018 3:08 PM

I love Volvic too. It's been my favorite since I discovered it a few years ago (I live in the US).

I also like Fiji.

Evian is good too, but I noticed that the four packs seem to have different water in them - not as good. (Sounds crazy but they're probably bottled at different sources.)

Bottled water is LITERAL MURDER.

by Anonymousreply 47September 6, 2018 3:13 PM

Worrying about recycling?

That's for THE POORS.

by Anonymousreply 48September 6, 2018 3:14 PM

Interesting, OP. Evian is the one bottled water I hate - something about it to me makes to "taste warm" no matter how cold it is. I don't find it crisp at all - vs. Volvic, which I find very crisp.

Dasani I think it tastiest - it's tap water with a precise mixture of minerals added for taste.

R48, I've noticed in LA it's the wealthy who care about recycling. The poor don't have separate recycling units (trash cans). Wealthy families have beautiful stainless steel recycling bins from the Container Store etc.

I've noticed that I excuse my consumption of things in plastic bottles (or any bottles) by saying I can recycle the bottle. I'm trying to keep in mind that plastic isn't recycled nearly as much as it used to be, in part because China is no longer accepting foreign plastic recycling, and because it's often hard to recycle (especially complicated bottles with multiple plastics of different opacity, etc.). So I'm really trying to have my reusable bottles with me. I'm going to use them for life. Same w/ Starbucks - I have Starbucks stainless steel tumblers and straws, and a reusable grande cup from Starbucks.

Dasani is tasty, but I'm going to avoid all bottled water, even if it's free (e.g., in Lyft rides).

by Anonymousreply 49September 6, 2018 3:30 PM

Volvic has also been my favorite. I don't know why it tastes so good, but I don't like dragging heavy bottles of water home & it seems like a waste of money - so Britta it is. It's fine.

Almost 10 years ago, I rented this place that had a separate tap on the kitchen sink & also the ice in the freezer was connected to the same source which was a reverse osmosis filter. The prior tenant took it with them (so neither worked) but it was only about $300 to buy & easy hard to self-install. It reduced the "dissolved solids" to <20 which can be measured with a cheap meter. Most cities are around 300. The water tasted sort of sharp / acidic at first because it took all of the minerals out. The company then sent me a calcite "filter" (adds minerals back) - and then it was then the best water I ever had with still very few dissolved solids. Dasani and Aquafina are just doing the same thing, as people have pointed out. Eventually all the filter changing became too annoying & the connections weren't as secure as they once were (huge problem with 1 gallon of water sitting there) - so I went back to britta.

by Anonymousreply 50September 6, 2018 3:35 PM

R44 - I get it near the source, bring my own 5 gallon water cooler-type bottles.

by Anonymousreply 51September 6, 2018 4:23 PM

by Anonymousreply 57September 6, 2018 5:40 PM

For my last year in the Boston area, I moved to Medford. Cambridge water had been unremarkable municipal water but Medford water was like high quality bottled water right from the tap. Very crisp and clean.

by Anonymousreply 58September 6, 2018 6:06 PM

My favourite is Tesco Value Sparkling which is 17p for 2 litres. I only ever buy the cheapest bottled water because I drink so much of it. Anyone paying more than 50p for 2 litres is a knobhead.

by Anonymousreply 59September 6, 2018 6:16 PM

Someone should bottle water from different cities. The labels on the bottles will state the name of the city (or area code) in which the water is taken from the tap. One could buy a 6 pack of water-each bottle from a different city. I think someone could make a fortune on this. Does anyone think this to be a good idea?

by Anonymousreply 60September 6, 2018 6:18 PM

Evian has a taste and Aquafina is purified tap water.

Water always has a taste thanks to mineral deposits.

The best water I ever had was tap water in Queenstown, New Zealand.

I'm with R1. Hildon and Gerolsteiner are wonderful with gas.

by Anonymousreply 64September 6, 2018 8:39 PM

Bottled (glass) water is a treat had with a meal two or three times a week for me. For every day drinking or at the gym, I carry a plastic bottle and refill it throughout the day. I just loath the idea of filling up the environment with plastic bottles or plastic in general. My family has this thing about drinking bottles of Poland Spring at family gatherings. I'm like....there is a tap right there with one of the best waters in the world (NYC) and it is practically free and very environmentally friendly! Ditto for people in New York City generally.

by Anonymousreply 65September 6, 2018 9:19 PM

If you've been watching the confirmation hearings, you'll notice both senators and witnesses guzzle dozens of the tiniest plastic bottles of water. They even do it at EPA hearings. If I had more energy or time, I'd start a campaign to shame elected officials into using refillable bottles.

Everyone screaming about "saving the planet" and "clogging the oceans", your outrage is misguided. The plastic floating around everywhere is way more than just plastic bottles. Walk into any grocery store, convenience store, department store and you will see plastic everywhere. Practically everything is wrapped in plastic, stored in plastic, or is plastic itself.

I don't drink bottled water from plastic bottles as I think it tastes funny from the plastic. I have a few glass bottles that I reuse. If I do get bottled water, it's usually for dinner parties and its that San pellegrino stuff.

There's got go be a complete overhaul of what plastic is made out of because you're not going to get people WORLDWIDE to stop using it, it's too convenient and widespread. I've read articles on plastic made from corn and plastic made from hemp. There's also supposedly a bacteria that can "eat" or dissolve plastic and thereby neutralizing it. I would like to believe that we as a species are intelligent enough to come up with solutions for this problem as well as a plethora of others out there. There are some fascinating documentaries on hemp and how it was a major crop back in the day. The shit can grow anywhere (crappy soil) and be used for a lot of stuff. Rope, paper, oil, feed, etc....

by Anonymousreply 78September 8, 2018 11:23 AM

Any proof, r77?

by Anonymousreply 79September 8, 2018 11:52 AM

So all of you drinking Evian, besides the thousands of plastic bottles you toss thoughtlessly into the waste disposal systems, you are also responsible for the damage done by the container ship that hauled that shit from France to the US. Tons of petroleum being burned and coughed into the atmosphere and into the seas just to bring you water you could get locally. And then, when container ship is unloaded, your Evian goes right into large trucks which distribute the product throughout the nation and the smaller delivery trucks which deliver to your local retail establishments.

In addition to the unconscionable plastic waste for which you are responsible due to your unwise choice to buy Evian, your soul also must atone for the carbon waste created by burning all that fucking petroleum.

The water you drink is not pure. It's filthy dirty.

[quote]Brita filters are bacteria incubators.

How so?

[quote] I find that refrigerating tap water in a glass pitcher produces a very clean taste.

I find the opposite to be true.

by Anonymousreply 88September 8, 2018 4:13 PM

I guess it's true that the carbon filters "can" harbor bacteria, but if you change them on-schedule and are filing them with clean city water (chlorinated, treated, water) - then it can't possibly be that much of an issue or we'd know by now. Those filters have been around for decades. I've never had any "bacterial" problem with them.

There was a brita pitcher in a shared fridge I had access to that was caked in mineral deposits and possibly mold (how hard is this to clean, people?)... so I did not drink out of that - though surprisingly, plenty of people did & even they survived.

by Anonymousreply 90September 8, 2018 9:46 PM

Voss

by Anonymousreply 91September 8, 2018 9:55 PM

R75 and others...Not really. The small plastic bottles is of concern, and not something I EVER buy, however you should enlarge your lens through which you see the situation. Many people live with either old plumbing (lead solder, or lead at the MAINS (most older US cities). As a health precaution, many should not be drinking from their taps. It has also been suggested, and rightfully so that for optimal health, one ought to have a variety of different waters they drink, rather than relying on only one source. To single out water in bottles is illogical, as juices, sports drinks, energy drinks, milk, sodas, teas, as well as coffees come in pretty much the same bloody bottles in many instances. Water is a healthy choice, and quite often it is a necessity and an impulse purchase. Though I filter my tap source, and buy bottled varieties ONLY in glass, I am not about to give up drinking mineral waters, fizzy or still.

by Anonymousreply 92September 8, 2018 10:00 PM
