what were some of those classic character actors like in real life?
I am amazed sometimes at the number of roles some of the old classic character actors played throughout their careers. People like Dub Taylor, Spring Byington, Denver Pyle, Slim Pickens, Reta Shaw, Jean Carson,..... Their credits go on forever.
Their Wikipedia pages list when and where they were born, how many relationships they had, any kids.
But nowhere does it ever tell you what they were like. Arrogant? Friendly? Kind? Neurotic?
Where do I research these people? Any and all tips greatly appreciated.

Look in the indices of memoirs of more famous people they worked with, or books about shows or genres they were in.

Reta Shaw could insert her entire fist into her vagina. it was a party trick she often did on the set of "Bewitched" for the amusement of the cast and crew when the twin child actresses who played Tabitha weren't around.

There are a number of books on character actors, though I don't think they dish a lot of dirt.
