Michael Biehn was so fucking hot in The Terminator and Aliens, but then never really made it.
Drop dead gorgeous male actors whose careers went nowhere
by Anonymous | reply 602 | September 5, 2018 5:04 PM |
They still need acting skills you know?
by Anonymous | reply 1 | September 1, 2018 9:17 AM |
I just watched Mumford (Loren Dean). He clearly should have been more famous. He has the skills. And he is lovely.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | September 1, 2018 9:22 AM |
I thought after Priest and Wings of the Dove Linus Roache was on track to become a major star--he had the looks and the talent, but he either didn't get a pushy enough agent or was more interested in being a character actor. He's had plenty of work since and after the Batman movies I doubt he's hurting for money, but it's always been as a supporting player, never the lead. And of course in the past ten years he ran into that British Dog-years Aging thing that has been discussed many times on DL.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | September 1, 2018 9:51 AM |
Was Linus Roache on L&O when it ended?
by Anonymous | reply 5 | September 1, 2018 9:53 AM |
Mmmmmm Linus was insanely hot in Batman Begins. I want him deep in me.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | September 1, 2018 10:06 AM |
The last time I saw Roache was in that awful Julian Fellowes TITANIC miniseries...he looked okay to me.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | September 1, 2018 10:18 AM |
Kevin Zegers unless you think starring in a string of countless DTV films as having made it.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | September 1, 2018 10:46 AM |
Not drop dead gorgeous but very sexy - Alan Gelfant who was the romantic lead in 1998’s “Next Stop Wonderland”.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | September 1, 2018 10:51 AM |
Linus was some king in Vikings. He lasted 3-4 seasons. He was excellent.
Clive Owen was touted as a major movie star and then his career went no where. Same with Jon Hamm. He will never not be Don Draper. That was it for him.

Rick Rossovich, pictured here with Steve Martin in Roxanne.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | September 1, 2018 11:02 AM |
R10, Clive Owen was incredibly hot in the movie "Closer", but after that . . . no.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | September 1, 2018 11:04 AM |
Casper Van Dien . . . What happened?
by Anonymous | reply 13 | September 1, 2018 11:07 AM |
Richard Bradford was a TV actor from the 60s. He never became a leading man though, but god was he hot.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | September 1, 2018 11:11 AM |
r14/15 looks like Jimmy Fallon. Maybe he should have gotten into the talk show business.
Michael Biehn apparently fucked up his own career by getting a reputation as nasty, aggressive drunk/ druggie. He wasn't big enough that anyone would have been willing to deal with that (unlike, say, Johnny Depp later was).
by Anonymous | reply 17 | September 1, 2018 11:28 AM |
Most of the named actors have had very successful careers, they just failed to secure (or long retain, in the case of Clive Owen) "classic leading man in big budget movie" status. Any aspiring actor who'd quit rather than suffer these career paths doesn't belong in the business to begin with. Even the not-remotely-gorgeous Alan Gelfant has years of steady employment.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | September 1, 2018 11:31 AM |
Jonathan Schaech.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | September 1, 2018 12:08 PM |
I can't help but think about all the guys that don't ever make it out of the casting auditions and end up in other careers. Like r18 said, these are the lucky ones. I feel that it would also be hard to be an A -lister, because you will have so much pressure to stay on top, with multiple mouths to feed. But the status thing is much easier for men, since the media has no problem telling an actress she has been replaced by the new It Girl. Men just quietly age out. Women are locked out.
Still, great post OP.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | September 1, 2018 12:25 PM |
I remember Richard Bradford mostly as the nasty, creepy redneck store owner in The Legend of Billie Jean.

The hottest of them all Michael Schoeffling (with Wiona Ryder in Mermaids). Quit Hollywood for the quiet life. He was so drop dead gorgeous in everything he made. Sixteen Candles & Longtime Companion come to mind.

by Anonymous | reply 77 | September 1, 2018 3:57 PM |
Thread title should be "actors you thought would be A-list" right? Most of these people have done quite well for themselves. Show biz is insanely competitive and very few will make a living as actors, let alone achieve the level of success that, say, Jamie Bamber has. Even Casper Van Dien has an enviable career at least from a financial point of view; he's making a comfortable living in his chosen profession.
Anyhoo.
I thought Cary Elwes would be more than flavor-of-the-month. Ditto Gael Garcia Bernal.
He was never going to be an A-lister but I thought there was room for a sexy, likable lightweight like Matt Keeslar. He would have been terrific as The Tick but he'd already left the business.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | September 1, 2018 3:58 PM |
The original only ran 2 episodes in 93' so I'm pretty sure that Alita is going to make a chunk of change. Here's the original two OAVs back to back with english subtitles because I would never want to torture you with a "dub for idiots". You're all [italic]literate, [/italic]so I know you'll appreciate the subtitles. :)

Most of DL was focused on Perry King in Mandingo, but as a little gay I thought Ken Norton was one of the most beautiful and sexy men I had ever seen.
He did Drum the next year, but not much happened for him after that. There wasn’t much around for a Black actor, and blaxploitation was drying up.
I think if he were breaking in 2018, he could have a shot at a bigger career.

Casper Van Diem was on a talk show when Tarzan came out and he made vicious fun of the gay men who were extras in the movie. I can't remember who the host was, but he was visibly shocked. I don't think that helped little Casper's career. He married that Serbian princess, known to her friends as Ox, and that lasted a long while before she finally left him. He is supposedly as unpleasant in person as he is on talk shows.

Richard Joseph Paul. His late 80s credits included starring roles in an ABC after-school special (“What If I’m Gay”) and a late 80s teen flick (“Under The Boardwalk”). He went on to have a small role in the Bill Murray film “Quick Change” and also played one of Carrie Bradshaw’s flings in an episode of SATC. I think, sometimes, it's a case of not being terribly talented. Some guys (and girls) are stunningly attractive and the camera loves them, but they can't play many different kinds of roles and Hollywood ends up having no use for them.
I always felt bad for Kevin Zegers. To me, he was like what Zac Efron would be if he were a better actor. I definitely think Kevin was the more talented of the two and he doesn't do much these days it seems.

I don't think Billy Zane lost his looks. I've seen pictures of him at conventions and his face is still beautiful. I think he might have gone bald and always wears a hat, but he's still attractive.
by Anonymous | reply 137 | September 1, 2018 8:54 PM |
I agree bald isn't necessarily an unattractive look on a man, but I do think it's unattractive on Billy.
by Anonymous | reply 138 | September 1, 2018 8:57 PM |
Kevin Zegers was almost impossibly beautiful. He looks like a sweet little elf or fairy from another world. Maybe he'll age into a slightly different look and be less distracting in his 40's or 50's. I think Zac Efron is a more (dare I say) masculine looking version of him. Even though he's not as brave or interesting an actor as Kevin, I can see his face lending itself to more everyday characters. There was just something about Kevin that was otherworldly. Almost like Meg Foster. She was distractingly beautiful and fascinating to look at, too, with those strange eyes of hers.

Rifftrax just did a theatrical showing of it and Colwyn's weapon, the Glaive, featured in Ready Player One. Jordan Brower. LAWD, Jordan Brower.
He played several tertiary characters in sit/teencoms of the '90s, most notably the underrated TEEN ANGEL; then a year after he graduated HS shot Van Sant's side project SPEEDWAY JUNKY with DL faves Qwerty & SWIMFAN's Jesse Bradford; then showed up for literally thirty seconds of screentime in TEXAS RANGERS with James Van der Beek; then put in a cameo in 'Six Feet Under'; then at about 25 years old did a short gay-interest festival film with Vincent Kartheiser; then barring a handful of 'uncrediteds' basically disappeared off the face of the planet. He quit the business together several years ago; per IMDB he moved back to Texas to raise his now-14 year old kid with a wife no-one has ever seen (no mention of what he does for money...)
Given Brower's cachet with the gay community/Gus Van Sant, we only have ourselves to blame for this one. It certainly wasn't a lack of beauty or talent or opportunity that did his film career in, as he looked like a David and outshone any & all of his costars. Poor agent, maybe?
Here he is in action...

The irony with Biehn is that he's one of the few people who's ever had anything positive to say about working with Cameron. And he's worked with him three times.

VERY few people become iconic A-list stars that get plumb roles for decades and decades.
Most actors are lucky to have a couple years of general hotness before settling for a life of being a working character actor.
When actors start to whine about typecasting or a role ruining their career, they generally need to be slapped and have it explained to them, "THIS is your career, stupid...not everyone gets to be Cher or Meryl!"

Noel Coward said that about Keir Dullea, but he didn't mean as a bitchy remark. It was just an amusing quip he made in the presence of the sexy young actor he was trying to entertain.

Hollywood is a place of lies, scheming and dogs-eating-dogs.
Furthermore to the Keir Dullea business.
Gore Vidal MAY have stolen Sir Noel Coward's quip about Dullea because Vidal was such a lying huckster.
But I'm sceptical of Vidal actually associating with Coward because Vidal was such a schlemiel closet-case.
And anyway Coward made that quip about Dullea while making that dreary 'Bunny Lake' film in 1965 because Britons didn't know how to pronounce this unknown man's name which looks like it should have been pronounced Keer Dulley-ah (just like Dan Dur-yee-ah)

Klinton Spilsbury was hot as fuck......this always intrigued me :
Andy Warhol interviewed Spilsbury during his promotion tour, later describing the interview as "nutty," because Spilsbury was "blowing his whole image" during their conversation. Spilsbury told Warhol that prior to making the movie, he had been an art student married to a rich woman and that they had a baby together. He went on to state that they did not spend much time together because he needed too much time with his own thoughts, a detail that Warhol found amusing. Spilsbury told Warhol that he was a friend of actor Dennis Christopher and had fallen in love with him, and that he also had later fallen in love with actor Bud Cort. Warhol described Spilsbury as "very drunk" during the latter part of the interview, when he also mentioned that "he'd been picked up by Halston and woke up in bed with Halston."

Peter Gallagher was stunningly gorgeous when he was younger, but I do remember thinking he'd kinda hit a wall somewhere around The O.C. (which he was GREAT on, btw!). It looked like he tanned too much or something. He seemed kinda leathery. Luckily for him, he's a pretty good actor, so it hasn't really hurt his career much. R232 "Bunny Lake Is Missing" offended me. It offended me that the Britain's greatest actor was playing second-fiddle serving two US B-grade actors playing two loony time-wasters.
Otto Preminger never knew what he was doing. In the 40s he claimed he was second Lubitsch. Then in the 50s he discovered sex, sensationalism and tastelessness. He made lots and lots of bad decisions and he always crowded his film with too many actors as box-office insurance for his weak direction.

R263 besides a few nigh-untraceable credits Vincent A. LaRusso quit acting after THE MIGHTY DUCKS trilogy (YES, there were three of those movies), as did most of the other 'Ducks' besides Joshua Jackson and Kenan Thompson (and the 'Bash Brothers' Aaron Lohr and Elden Henson, if we're being more generous).
He plays the lead in exactly one production, the short film DAMAGED GOODS from over 12 years ago. It is impossible to find in full online (the trailer is in the link) which may be for the best as it seems beyond dreadful. Vincent looks very cute in it and takes it so seriously, though, bless his heart.
Vincent also did a handful of national commercials for shaving razors while he was still in his 20s, iirc. Last anyone heard or saw of the man he was doing quite well for himself tending bar in WeHo. He's still sexy.

Dan Cortese was always more of a daytime soap-level "attractor" rather than an actor so I'm not terribly surprised that his career went down the shitter once his looks started to fade. With Rick, no he wasn't a great actor, but for a while, it seemed that he was destined for a career in the vein of Steve Guttenberg or Tom Berenger. He could've transitioned into a B-level action movie star.

I met Mikey Biehn at a horror film convention last year and he was very nice and has great hands and a firm handshake. I sat next to him behind his table and had my pic taken with him. Same with Costas Mandylor, who was also nice and stood up beside me to take a pic (with his arm draped over my shoulder!).

There is no way that Craig Bierko does not look good. But that photo at R310 is the absolute best of him.
It is also 25 years old. The clock stops at midnight for no one.

Clive Owen never struck me as a star. I also think his acting is overrated.
I think Eddie Murphy could have had an even bigger career if he had picked better scripts and did more dramas. Boomerang and Dreamgirls showed he had range.
by Anonymous | reply 314 | September 2, 2018 5:05 PM |
Thanks for that, R307--I'd forgotten about that series till now, and it was a major event at the time. Way, way better than "Pearl Harbor." Agree about Bochner, a major crush after Apartment Zero. I remember when that movie came out the media claimed he was in a relationship with an Argentinian actree from the film, but I didn't buy it, he had way more chemistry with Colin Firth than you generally see between actors and actresses playing characters who are sexually involved.
Noticed it again in War and Remembrance--his interactions with Jane Seymour, one of the most beautiful actresses ever to appear on a screen, come off like scenes of a brother and sister. Hot as he was, he made a career of playing the douchey boss or romantic rival who was obviously wrong for the heroine.
I think he's probably quietly out in his private life but closeted publicly, probably for the sake of his image in his early career, then out of habit as a man of his that generation.

Anyone remember Rodney Eastman?
The super cute guy who played the mute and delinquent Joey in A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 3: THE DREAM WARRIORS?
He's another addict who fucked it all up.
His leading role in DEADLY WEAPON did him no favors. But then he took it all for granted and decided to party hard, drive drunk, and mangle his golden face in a car wreck.

Eastman still does P-list horror schlock, usually playing thugs or junkies now. He makes his own short films. His career took a heartbreaking turn, but he makes his own music, too, which isn't half bad.
Here's an interview explaining his downfall. And he performs a good song.

R454 aw come on, BRAINSCAN is one of the best Worst Movies of the '90s. It's like Freddy Kruger meets Drop Dead Fred, meets American Psycho only with a demon from a CD-ROM (they basically use the AOL Free 100 Hours concept as the narrative driver only it's a mindscrew brainwashing PAL videogame).
As a movie it's a dark fucked-up cartoon. It's a little bit outrageous, but at it's core it's nothing more than a time-capsule of '90s heavy metal/sci-fi teen culture and the moral panic about all that. It's a little bit sick and sad to watch if you can get past how lurid and silly it is, but that is a big "if". I'm not sure I'd call it a mistake on Furlong's part, either; there is something compelling and even campy in the awfulness of BRAINSCAN, and there is certainly no other film like it in existence. The real bullshit is that the director blamed teenage Furlong for this entire movie bombing (and this was before Furlong became what we know now).
Furlong's character IS a real creep in it, like a perv and a half, but most horror protags are gross. His tech is cool, however - people barely give a shit about Skype right now and he's got a computer-phone-gaming system of his own design in 1994. It's basically the prototype for the iPhone, but it's a huge computer.
True that BRAINSCAN sucks but it was interesting suckage, I guess is what I'm saying.

Pretty blond Matt Barr is in danger of this. He's still under 35 and has some excellent credits on his resume (such as his turn as Johnse in Costner's HATFIELDS & McCOYS) so there's a good chance for him to come back strong.
Nevertheless, at the present time his agent is handling him with manifest injustice. His last project was trash.

I was sure Enver Gjokaj had a great career ahead of him. He was terrific in a supporting role on Dollhouse, totally outshining the lead. He's been working fairly regularly since but doesn't seem to have done anything notable. A real waste of talent, but he might still get a break.
As someone else noted, Paul Gross and Callum Keith Rennie work steadily in Canada. Gross was in a wonderful TV show called Slings & Arrows. Check it out, especially if you're a theater buff. (The show is about a fictionalized version of the Stratford Shakespeare Festival.)
Speaking of Canadian productions, Billy Campbell has fuck-you money. He asked to be written out of The 4400 so he could spend a year sailing around the world.
Chris Atkins was hot for a while after Blue Lagoon, but made too many shitty movies.

Just got Brainscan blu ray. The movie is one of the most entertaining I've seen. I'm sure early 90's nostalgia plays a role though.
But both Brad Renfro and Eddie Furlong were getting terrific reviews early in their careers. Furlong gave good performances in more dramatic films like American Heart, Little Odessa, Home of Our Own, Before and After and American History X. It's only lately I've noticed people slamming everything he's ever done just because he became a junkie later in life who desperately tried to cling to his career by starring in a slew of shitty low budget horror. He can't even get those now. They didn't even call him back for the extra features on the new Brainscan blu ray. But he did display a lot of talent early in his career. At least Brad is still spoken highly of today, but he was mocked endlessly when he was still alive.

R528 It's always been the same. Actors should count themselves lucky to be working and never take their work for granted. I never understood people like Shia Lebouf who bad mouth their projects or earn a bad reputation. As the years proved, working on multi million dollar franchises and with directors like Spielberg doesn't guarantee long term success. Likewise, those who find their niche in teen or horror films should just milk that for however long they can and not hold out for more serious roles. If it happens, great, but it's not inevitable no matter how talented you think you are.

Watched a horror film several years ago called King of the Ants and being captivated by Chris McKenna. Originally I thought the film must have been directed by David DeCoteau but the film was a lot better than anything he ever did. So imagine my surprise that the film which contains numerous lingering shots of McKenna fully naked was directed by none other than Stuart Gordan of Reanimator fame. The only thing I recognized McKenna in was from a small role in the short lived Opposite of Sex tv series. It looks like he hasn't been doing much besides television commercials these days except commercials and bit parts in tv series. It's quite a shame since he possessed the goods.

If YouTube comedy, IG-whoring and occasional EP releases on Spotify don't count as a career trajectory and we use a flexible definition of "gorgeous", then: cute Millennial actors Drake (Bell) and/or Josh (Peck), formerly of Nickelodeon sitcomry and various cult/indie teen films of the '00s.
Moreso Josh, as Drake in all fairness is constantly touring his music and currently voices the cartoon Spider-Man. Josh does do VO work and occasional films but no-one ever sees them. He just announced his wife (I know, I know) is expecting a baby which will make for a nice resume-gap justification.
