Yes we're jealous! We can't even uproot ourselves to get to a movie theater, never mind one with Lady Gaga.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | August 31, 2018 11:10 PM |
I think Cooper has really poured his psycho spiritual journey with sobriety into the film; and Gaga has poured her struggle with adapting a persona because she didn’t feel “pretty enough” into her role. And something real and moving has emerged as a result.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | August 31, 2018 11:49 PM |
Variety is another rave. I do not think I have ever read such a long review in Variety. They love Gaga
"And he does it convincingly. That’s part of the magnetic pull of this version — it, too, is a romance heightened by the seductive cruel mirror of showbiz. Yet it has a naked humanity that leaves you wowed. These two people, the rising star and the fading star, are locked in a love as true as it is torn, and both of them, by the end, become us. “A Star Is Born” is more than a throwback — it’s a reminder of the scrappy grand passion that movies are all about."

by Anonymous | reply 24 | September 1, 2018 1:58 AM |
I think the trailer looks really good except for one thing. Yes, Lady GagGag can sing. I'll give her that but the BITCH CAN'T ACT. I mean even in the trailer you can see that. She ruined that Hotel season of American Horror Story for me. I haven't watched an episode of that series yet. Oh, and I'm just going to say it. She's not easy on the eyes. I'm torn about seeing this film because it looks well made, Bradley Cooper seems to be giving a great performance, and the music seems really good BUT watching GaGa-GooGoo act is a painful experience.

Gaga cannot act. Period. She was beyond dreadful in AHS, far beyond.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | September 1, 2018 2:44 AM |
Too bad it’s an entirely original soundtrack. Evergreen is one of the most sublime songs ever written. I would have liked to hear GaGa sing it.

[quote]If "Lady Gaga" wants to be taken seriously in the film industry she should use her real name instead of Lady Gaga... It just can't be taken seriously...
When her casting was announced the press release stated she would be billed as Stefani whatever her last name is. I guess the studio wanted to use her name to bring her fans to the seats.
[quote]Yes, Lady GagGag can sing. I'll give her that but the BITCH CAN'T ACT.
I always thought the Hollywood Foreign Press were a bunch of starfuckers but when they gave her a Golden Globe for her role in American Horror Story : Hotel , I knew they were fawning whores for celebrities. She was terrible and dragged down every scene she was in.

LOL r4!
by Anonymous | reply 40 | September 1, 2018 2:50 AM |
I'm a little surprised at how very good, and how very universal, the reviews are.
Gaga was weak in AHS, but who knows — she really did rise to the challenge of singing "The Sound of Music" live and her Super Bowl appearance was fantastic, so perhaps Cooper got a good performance out of her.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | September 1, 2018 2:51 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 46 | September 1, 2018 2:56 AM |
The awards buzz has building for a while, but I was skeptical as GaGa truly was horrendous in AHS. I guess she’s pretty great in this, but the story doesn’t interest me. Still think it’s going to be a big hit in the vein of Les Miz and Greatest Showman- a sentimental crowd pleaser.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | September 1, 2018 2:57 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 48 | September 1, 2018 2:58 AM |
Film reviews for solid films shown at big film festivals are always slightly exaggerated. It's when the film comes out that you get mixed reviews. Unless it's a really, really, really great film.
Let's see how the film plays at TIFF.

Early reviews are often very positive. It doesn’t always predict what the critical consensus will be.
Gaga was pretty bad on AHS, but at the same time, she was very watchable. She had presence; she just wasn’t that good of an actor at that point. Maybe she got better?

Alonso Duralde, one half of the married gay couple who both review movies, had positive things to say about it.
I gasped at this: "I rate Garland’s performance of “The Man That Got Away” as one of the all-time great musical performances on celluloid, so I mean it as high praise when I say that while none of the numbers in this version surpasses that moment, some of them come shockingly close."

A Star Is Born
Opening Weekend Range: $35 – 55 million (up from $25 – 35 million)
Following up on our initial analysis of the star-driven remake, the film continues to gain momentum as release approaches. Warner Bros. was confident enough to drop the review embargo today — over a full month ahead of opening day — and critics are praisingthe film, confirming earlier expectations that it could be a strong award season player.

American Horror Story is terribly written. That's why most of the actor's suck in it. Ryan Murphy is luckier than he is talented. He is the Gay Ben Stiller.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | September 1, 2018 5:46 AM |

R79 I agree with your assessment of Murphy's "writing", completely. His 'writing' is beyond amateurish. But Bates, Bassett, and Lange have acted that shit into gold. That's what great actors do. Bomer basically slept through his 'performance;, and Gaga acted like a 6 year old in a school play about getting cooties.

I think this will be huge. Bigger than Greatest Showman, which did very well despite getting panned by critics. People will pay to see the movie and buy the soundtrack, and it will win at least one Oscar (Best Song).
This “love scene”, though, sounds bizarre and almost comical.
by Anonymous | reply 107 | September 1, 2018 2:26 PM |
The reviews are not RAVES, but they are very good.
Its clearly going to be a crowd pleaser, and Oscar may want to reward a crowd pleaser this year!
As far as Gaga winning. Don't see this happening. At all.
I am pulling for Toni Collette actually getting the nomination, and campaigning her ass off, and winning.
by Anonymous | reply 108 | September 1, 2018 2:28 PM |
For Toni, the nomination itself would be the win considering how rare it is for the Academy to award performances from horror films, though after Get Out they may be more willing.
by Anonymous | reply 109 | September 1, 2018 2:33 PM |
Best actress is between Glenn and Viola Davis. Colette and Gaga will both get nominated but neither will come close to winning.
by Anonymous | reply 110 | September 1, 2018 2:38 PM |
I know R109, but a guy can hope...
I do not see Gaga winning for this though. Although I am not aware of the actresses with Oscar buzz this year. Is this Glenn thing for real?? And is Toni REALLY in the running? I will check out Goldderby.
I was going to say that early buzz like this never lasts for Best Actress, HOWEVER, I do recall Cate Blanchett getting buzz for months and months for Blue Jasmine. And she did win. (Deservedly, in my opinion. It is a VERY difficult character to watch, but my god she was perfect) And I think it was Woody Allen's best film in years- and oddly accessible.
by Anonymous | reply 111 | September 1, 2018 2:39 PM |
Festival raves mean nothing. Everyone is coked up and on opiates and other drugs and drunk at these screenings. The “reviewers” hysterical word of mouth is bought and paid for. Three months later actual reviewers see the movie and it’s revealed for the piece of shit it is. Does no one recall the ecstatic reviews of the SiB trailer at SXSW, and now the trailer is out and it’s just embarrassing? This movie is going to SUUUUUCCCCKK. Hard.

Have we forgotten our history? Jessica Lange was horrible in King Kong and How to Beat the High Cost of Living, but she became a great actress.
Lady Gaga can be bad in AHS (I didn't have a problem with her - I mean it was a campfest) and be award worthy in A Star is Born.
Jane Fonda is another example. She's dreadful in some of her early performances (In the Cool of the Day, Period of Adjustment).
Streisand, however, seemed to regress. Compare Funny Lady to Nuts. wow
All I know is I can't wait to see WILLAM BELLI and D.J. (SHANGELA) PIERCE on the big screen.
That'll show Phi Phi O'Hara and Trixie Matel a thing or two!

According to Goldderby Glenn Close is the front-runner, with Viola close behind. The Wife has received very good reviews, so I don't know what you queens are talking about. Not that reviews matter when it comes to awards.
Viola Davis deserves to win after being robbed for Fences. But, Glenn Close will win, because she is "overdue" for an Oscar. Lady Gaga will be lucky to be nominated, and if she is and wins I will simply just die.
by Anonymous | reply 126 | September 1, 2018 2:54 PM |
[quote]reading Viola, what film?
If you mean regarding Viola, the buzz is for Widows. Viola, Michelle Rodriguez, Elizabeth Debicki and Cynthia Erivo play women who avenge the murders of their husbands.
by Anonymous | reply 127 | September 1, 2018 2:56 PM |
Toni has a tremendous amount of good will in a well received horror film. It's gonna be hard for her to get a nomination, but definitely not impossible. If Daniel Kaluuya could make it for his understated, yet effective, turn in Get Out then I think Toni could make it in with the proper campaign.
From the looks of it, this race should be between Glenn Close and Lady Gaga. The odds are in Gaga's favor here because the Academy's shown a preference for youth. They chose Emma Stone over Isabelle Huppert and Jennifer Lawrence over Emmanuelle Riva. Glenn's edge is that she's been nominated so many times, but Gaga's buzz could easily derail that narrative.
[quote]Viola Davis deserves to win after being robbed for Fences.
Viola won the Oscar for Fences. I wouldn't be surprised if she's nominated, but has anyone seen Widows yet? It looks like a fun, gritty actioner, but seems to lack the prestige that would propel Davis towards her second win.
Olivia Coleman's in for The Favourite. Won't win, but should be nominated.
by Anonymous | reply 128 | September 1, 2018 2:57 PM |
God, I hate the "overdue" Oscars. It's always for badly subpar performances.
Scent of a Woman The Color of Money The Departed
And now everyone will have more reasons to be underwhelmed by Close.
And Viola getting a second Oscar is just lame.
Maybe some performance will emerge as a new contender before it's all over.
by Anonymous | reply 129 | September 1, 2018 2:57 PM |

There's still Claire Foy who plays the supportive wife in "First Man" and Felicity Jones as Ruth Bader Ginsburg in "On the Basis of Sex". If Gaga does get a nomination she'll have to battle Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie who will likely get nods for "Mary Queen of Scots".

R128, I was just at IMDB trying to figure out what fucking film Viola would be nominated for and I saw Widows and was like "Its not this one- its an action film!" LOL
There was nothing else. So Widows?? I don't think so!
I see she will be starring in a Harriet Tubman film, so you can pretty much hand her the Oscar now for that one!!

The potential nominees this year ARE BORING AS FUCK, so I am now starting to think that Gaga may have a damn chance!!
She would be smart NOT TO OVERDO the campaining- I could see her turning people off like Melissa Leo did years ago- my god she was deranged and annoying as hell. She did win, but she pushed it too far. Reeked of desperation.

"Time" on her acting (from a link upthread)
[quote] The big question that’s been hovering in the air for months is, Can Lady Gaga act? It’s a ridiculous question. Singers often make fabulous actors. They’re primed for it: All singing is acting. But what’s surprising about Gaga is how charismatic she is without her usual extreme stage makeup, outlandish wigs and inventive costumes. It’s such a pleasure to look at her face, unadorned, with that extraordinary, face-defining nose—it’s like discovering a new country.

Foy in First Man is supporting.
Widows is going to surprise a lot of people. Yes, it’s genre but crime genre has always done well at the Oscars- The Departed, No Country for Old Men, etc. and being a genre film is no longer a barrier to success. It’s a female centric story, strong female cast, screenplay co-written by Gillian Flynn, a black director- it’s got a lot of things in its favor on paper. The word from test screenings in Houston this spring were very strong.
by Anonymous | reply 140 | September 1, 2018 3:27 PM |
Emma Stone and Jennifer Lawrence were proven actors with major credibility from earlier performances like Winter’s Bone, for example. Gaga has zero credibility other than a widely derided off- camp turn in a Ryan Murphy horror show that earned her a bought Golden Globe. There is no comparison between the three actresses. That’s utterly ridiculous.
by Anonymous | reply 141 | September 1, 2018 3:29 PM |

Madonna is a mediocre singer and yet her early career was marked by a more compelling voice than the improved, trained one, later one. When she was young, she sang freely and with slap dash. Gaga "can sing" but she's been a cloying try hard for day one of her career. Its pretty hard to put one's finger on why she is irksome. I always remember when she was interview as if a Royal by Babs Walters, I think, and she claimed to be an artist in direct line from her heroes Bowie and Warhol. I mean, really, this deluded pretentious bitch.
I think the best thing she ever did as an artist was that 1 year long period where she did a craven thirst pap stroll 2 times a day with outrageous outfits, never repeated. I think that was her peak of talent and it was entertaining.

Kaluuya was nominated for the Independent Spirit Award, Golden Globe, BAFTA and SAG. He received precursors throughout the entire season, oftentimes alongside Franco, so those allegations had nothing to do with Kaluuya's Oscar nom. Denzel was Franco's filler.

[quote] Golden Globe
In the Comedy category
[quote] BAFTA and SAG. He received precursors throughout the entire season, oftentimes alongside Franco, so those allegations had nothing to do with Kaluuya's Oscar nom.
And so did Washington. Your point? I said they were category fillers because the category was so weak last year. You had three deserving actors (Chalamet, Day Lewis and Oldman) and one who was wildly overpraised, but for some reason people wanted to nominate him (Franco). Then you had NO ONE. Nada. The three "I guess we have to nominate SOMEONE because we need to fill out the category" were Kaluuya, Washington and Tom Hanks for The Post. Hanks was never going to happen because it wasn't even a lead role. But also, Hanks is white and everyone had a severe diversity boner to go inclusive last year, especially with #MeToo happening. They needed to look like they were making some progress.
Both Kaluuya and Washington got in at SAG because Phantom Thread didn't not arrive in time for the majority of SAG to see it. It was a big story and DDL is an actor's actor so there's no way he wouldn't have been in had enough people seen it. That still would have left one slot and Washington would have gotten it over Kaluuya because, again, he's an actor's actor and respected.
Had MeToo not blown up in Franco's face during voting for the AA noms, Washington would have taken the fifth slot and Kaluuya would have been out on his ass. It was a nothing performance.
Kaluuya can credit every nomination he got to the dearth of viable candidates last year.

I'm sure is Gaga is just fine in the film, but the media is trying to prop her up and create an Oscar bandwagon for her. They did the same thing for Jennifer Hudson and Cher. It's an exciting Hollywood storyline that they want to promote.
by Anonymous | reply 167 | September 1, 2018 5:50 PM |
Yeah, if people can give an Oscar to Jennifer Hudson, then Gags has this in the bag. Hudson's performance was quite literally the worst ever to win an Oscar and 12 years after the fact, there are still people who refuse to admit how horrible she was and that they just got caught up in some frenzy.

Disagreed. I thought Kaluuya was great, and I was thrilled with his nomination. It's not something we have to see eye to eye on though.
[quote]They did the same thing for Jennifer Hudson and Cher.
Which is precisely why I think she's going to win. Hudson won because she had a similar narrative and sang an iconic song. The rest of her performance wasn't much to write home about and literally every other nominee that year was more deserving. Lady Gaga will likely win for similar reasons, and she's already way more familiar with the Academy now than Hudson was. She also already has an Oscar nomination.
All Lady Gaga has to do is show up during the awards circuit. Her de-glamming is already a significant part of her narrative as well, and we all know the Academy loves that.

[quote]Wrong. Glenn Close has a narrative to win.
They both have compelling narratives, which is why it'll likely be between Close and Gaga. Gaga, however, will have a hit behind her. It's likely that The Wife won't receive any nominations beyond Close's, whereas A Star is Born will probably have representation in multiple categories, including Best Picture. We'll also be hearing the soundtrack on the radio, which will definitely help.
All I'm saying is that Close has a formidable opponent.

There's not a wrong note in his performance. Unfortunately, the remainder of A Star is Born is an unmitigated disaster that has the megalomaniac fingerprints of Barbra Streisand and her hairdresser/producer boyfriend, Jon Peters, all over it."

While that song has a pretty melody (I could do without the Lyrics by Pottery Barn "Looooooove . . . soft as an easy chair!"), it was emblematic of what was wrong with that film.
It was far too "Adult Easy Listening" to be believable that Streisand's character had wowed her husband's rock fans. As a review at the time said, "It was as believable as Kate Smith bringing a Rolling Stones audience to its feet in an ovation."

Lady Gaga always reminds me of Napoleon Dynamite’s fake girlfriend. There’s something slippery about her appearance. I mentally can’t pin down her face in my mind and it always looks like she’s tried to disguise herself in a clumsy way.

I don't think Gaga will an Oscar. I see Michelle Williams or Amy Adams getting one several years from now. Rooney Mara will probably have another Oscar nominated role later on. But, she won't win. Gaga should axe the lip injections and take her hair back to its natural color. A "no makeup" look with her dark hair slicked back and her light eyes would be a great look for her.
Also, why doesn't she go by Stefani Germanotta as an actress and Lady Gaga as a singer? Kind of like Donald Glover/Childish Gambino.

Former film critic here. I'm sure some are paid, but most critics will suck up to studios for perks. Ebert used to gloat at length about the perks he got until he learned in the age of the internet that it was a really bad look for him.
Usually though, film critics are insecure nerds who are terrified that people will discover they are insecure nerds, so they suck up to studios to keep getting invited to the biggest screenings and get sent various bits of swag they can tweet about.
Not that it matters; only about three real reviews are written per movie (often by indie or freelancer critics who get paid next to nothing) and everyone else plagiarizes from that.

by Anonymous | reply 269 | September 2, 2018 11:42 AM |
R256 So, now it's her fault that you are an uncultured swine (and a troll)?
Since The Hours, she's starred in Oscar-nominated movies like Cold Mountain, Rabbit Hole, and Lion. She has co-starred in commercially-successful movies like Happy Feet and Paddington. And, tentpole movies like the Golden Compass, Stepford Wives, and Australia. She also starred in a whole bunch of small independent films by well-know directors, like: Dogville, Birth, The Interpreter, Margot at the Wedding, The Paperboy, Stoker, and Queen of the Desert. Of course, she had a career lull where she starred in a series of flops. But, she had a career resurgence last year with her multi-award winning miniseries Big Little Lies, three movies (The Beguiled, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, and How To Talk To Girls at Parties), and her role in BBC series Top of the Lake: China Girl. This year she will star in Destroyer, Boy Erased, and DC's Aquaman. And, next year she will star in John Crowley's (Brooklyn) The Goldfinch.
She's a phenomenal actress, who is well-respected in the industry. You're just a hatin ass bitch. Get over it.
by Anonymous | reply 270 | September 2, 2018 1:24 PM |
R269 Kulig is not going to happen, not even by a long shot. The film might be nominated for Best Foreign Language, though. Kidman is a lock for either Destroyer or Boy Erased. Pfeiffer in Where is Kyra? would be a pleasant surprise, but I don't see it happening. Although, her career has had a bit of a resurgence lately. So, maybe. Best Actress is always a stacked category, so it will be a close race for sure.

I think the whole Madonna/Gaga thing is so silly. Madonna wins on the music -- her songs will stand the test of time I think far more than Gaga's whereas Gaga will always be referred to, and rightly so, as the better singer (vocally speaking) and, perhaps, as a better actress with a possible Oscar nomination and win to back it up (whereas Madonna isn't really an actress at all). Fans of both have something real to point to, so that makes it a draw in my opinion.
People need to appreciate both women for what they are and get over all the rivalry bullshit already.

These past four years have been great for Gaga and have been sort of an F U to the people who said she was over after Artpop (which was still a #1 record and had some true bangers). Her triumphant turns at the 2014 Kennedy Center Honors and the Stevie Wonder tribute, amazing performances at the Grammys and two back to back heralded Oscar ceremony performances which received praise from major Hollywood heavy hitters and legends, an Oscar nom, some Grammy wins, a couple more #1 albums, with one of them being an album of standards alongside legend Tony Bennett, another massive tour, a star turn on AHS which netted her a Golden Globe win, a much talked about super bowl halftime headlining performance, a Coachella headlining gig and now this amazing press for her starring role in a film opposite one of Hollywood’s hottest male leads and yeah, I think it’s safe to say that the woman is far from over.

EW has compiled some reviews.
Leah Greenblatt (EW) “Gaga’s serious-actress transformation for her first major film role will undoubtedly lead the conversation, and she deserves praise for her restrained, human-scale performance as a singer whose real-girl vulnerability feels miles away from the glittery meat-dress delirium of her own stage persona. And the original songs (most of which Gaga and Cooper share full or partial credit for) are memorably, sturdily melodic —though not the conspicuously flat dance-pop Ally moves toward as her career swerves closer toward the mainstream.”

The Academy had the worst case of buyer’s remorse in its history when they collectively woke up the next morning and realized they had actually given their precious Oscar to the abominable Jennifer Hudson. She couldn’t even reach high school level acting in her dramatic scenes and she simply screeched through the money song. [quote] Oh, I wouldn't say the ABSOLUTE worst.....—Marisa Tomei and Goopster Poopster
Wrong. Marisa Tomei has proven herself to be an incredibly talented actress with several very well regarded performances and three Oscar nominations under her belt, as well as a new appreciation for her comedic chops in My Cousin Vinny. No one regrets the fact that she has an Oscar.
As for Goop, it's not a deserving performance and time hasn't been kind to it, but it's not inept. And it ranks up there with the same kind of ingenue performance that has won an Oscar time and time again, From Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday, to Julie Christie in Darling, to Jennifer Lawrence in Silver Linings Playbook to Emma Stone in La La Land. You stand back and wonder what the fuck they got an Oscar for, but none of them are as singularly untalented as Jennifer Hudson.
You want to see how bad Hudson is- watch the Sex & The City movie. She can't even be believable in a role any actress could do under the influence of heroin. Actually, no. Watch her Weight Watchers commercials. She isn't even believable playing herself.

Cooper is a critics' darling for some unfathomable reason. he's made SO much shit in his career, ad his best 'performance' was in Midnight Meat Train. And yes, that's sarcasm.
Gaga was HORRIBLE on AHS. Beyond horrible.
It's a sad day when these two can star i some tired remake of a story that should have ended with James Taylor and Carly Simon's real life marriage. Honestly, enough with "A Star is Born".

But after checking out other potential nominees and reading these universally rapturous reviews- I think this bitch may be hers to lose! And I suspect a MASSIVE, MASSIVE financial success with this film, which will take her to glory.
As far as Viola, she will win HANDS DOWN for the Harriet Tubman film. They might as well put the placard on it and stick it in a vault until 2020 or 2021-

I saw The Wife yesterday - Glenn isn't getting any Oscar for that. If she gets nominated, you'll know it's from her body of work not for that movie. It's pretty awful as a whole. The only good thing about it is Max Irons and he's looking really pudgy. And Glenn now looks like Judi Dench's twin sister. Her daughter plays the young version of Glenn's character and she's in the credits as "Introducing Annie Starke" -- such annoying nepotism.

Last year I recall people thinking Glenn would get a nomination for A CROOKED HOUSE (also starring Max Irons), but it was atrocious and nothing came of it.
And yes, Max has put on weight. I watch his series CONDOR and he's filled out considerably.
by Anonymous | reply 386 | September 3, 2018 5:05 PM |

Felt the same way about Still Alice or whatever that Julianne Moore drama was called. Totally minor film and not nearly her best work- but it didn’t matter. Narrative and campaigning is what wins.
by Anonymous | reply 388 | September 3, 2018 5:29 PM |
Which probably also explains why JLaw won for Silver Linings Playbook because she absolutely, in no way deserved that Oscar.
by Anonymous | reply 389 | September 3, 2018 5:32 PM |
Still Alice is exactly the type of film I'd compare The Wife to. It exists solely to get the actress the Oscar. Meryl Streep's Iron Lady fits as well.
by Anonymous | reply 390 | September 3, 2018 5:37 PM |
If the company who put The Wife out really had the money to back a serious awards campaign for Glenn, they would have held off and released the film in Oct/Nov, not in the doldrums of August on a platform release. Glenn probably had it in her contract that they do some sort of Oscar campaign for her, but the bare minimum is sending out screeners, which they are likely contracted to do. Either they don't believe in the film and will just do the bare minimum or they were dumb enough to believe that by getting out in front of the Fall Oscar bait, Glenn's performance, and (most especially) her very overdue status, would be an angle that could get them a lot of free publicity.
Unfortunately, no one's taking the bait.

I hope they don't fraud Colman, though perhaps they will if they feel the leading race is too packed, which it honestly is. She's definitely the lesser known actress, so her chances would be harder compared to all the heavy hitters. Maybe they'll just campaign Colman, Stone, and Weisz in supporting to increase their chances. Either way, I hope Colman's nominated. She's such a wonderful actress and it'd just be so damn cool.

If this had been made in 2010 as planned, then Beyonce would be getting the Oscar buzz. Because hate her or love her-she can knock the fucking wheels off singing and dancing and being pretty. She can be soft and sing pretty, her harmonics are better than Gaga's though LG can play a not bad piano. (don't be fooled into thinking she's good) Pretty Hurts. Beyonce doesn't hurt my eyes. These "reviews" are all payola right now. The real reviews will savage this stinker of a music. Notice her film is not up for competition. The checks cleared. They are attempting to set the narrative because all the early murmurs about this movie was how bad it is.

by Anonymous | reply 420 | September 4, 2018 4:01 AM |
My point is that the story is pointless. The modern truths of how a woman rises to the top of the pop music industry aren't ever addressed in the new version - according to even the happiest critics. U can't look at Bradley Cooper and not think of Barry Manilow, and Gaga is a more homely Bette Midler. The drag queen club bit was already done in The Rose. Do it again for Gaga, at least there she can shine. She can sing I know it, but she's so much better when we don't have to watch.
SO give us some one to root for and give me some Bodyguard vibes. Give us the lovely Beyonce of 2009. Seismographic performer, truly the most important woman in music and a sweet pretty woman. She can act well enough to play a timid rising star who knows her worth and tries on some lewks on her way to the TOP. For her drunk drugged out lover/mentor give us all some 2010 Brad Pitt. Gold.

by Anonymous | reply 437 | September 5, 2018 2:19 AM |
Old dude @ 435: This flick will not break box office records. It's a tedious old story that fits Cooper's aspirations. Some of Gaga fans will go to see it, but they didn't like Aunt Joanne and they won't embrace this fake pose either. She can't really succeed outside her origninal lane, no matter how much exposure she gets from award shows. She's always borderline terrible, including the SOM performance. It's hard to know when Gaga is being fake. She's a lot like Donna Summer - outside of dance music she CAN still sing but nobody wants to listen. Gaga can't communicate emotion. I know, I spent three days as part of an interviewing with her and following her. She can feign emotion. But she's best at self promotion. I can't believe they let her give a tribute to Bowie and then screw up the Sound Of Music (Chenoweth is available) and then give her the Anthem at the Superbowl and a Golden Glob. This level of praise and acceptance is unprecedented for a performer who disappoints every time she sings. No wonder Streisand says she likes her. She used to be her. Oscar, maybe. Shared with an actress.
by Anonymous | reply 438 | September 5, 2018 2:49 AM |
R438, You're a Broadway queen, aren't you? You're suggestion that the Oscars would have even the slightest interest in a hokey performer like Kristin Chenoweth is the dead giveaway.

Bradley's a producer on this flick, so he likely put up some cash. It also means he'll get three more nominations for the film: Picture, Director, and Actor, bringing his total to 7!

Not a chance. What it means is he probably took a much lower upfront fee to get the film made (and to be allowed to direct it) and has a much larger back end deal.

by Anonymous | reply 496 | September 6, 2018 7:35 PM |
The real nugget in that Forbes article is that DL’s presumed front runner, Glenn Close, is only considered a longshot. Sounds like Gaga’s PR is protecting the house that Gaga built from all corners. And Glenn needs a better publicist. You don’t think the Oscar-thirsty likes of Margot Robbie and Nicole Kidman are going to step aside and allow Glenn a smooth journey to the podium, do you?
by Anonymous | reply 497 | September 6, 2018 7:58 PM |
Yeah, I noticed that about the Forbes article as well. To see her placed on the outskirts could just be a singular opinion, but I'm sure Glenn wanted her chances to at least be stronger than Toni Collette's.
I just don't see Robbie getting in unless she pushes herself in supporting, and even then I don't buy whatever she's doing in the trailer, though it could work better in context. The whole production looks schlocky.

Bale will eventually win a 2nd Oscar, for lead, but he's only 44 at the moment and I can't see the Academy giving him two at this young an age. He's got a shit ton years of performances to come. If Cooper's perf is that good in ASIB, and/or Gosling blows everyone away they will duke it out.
ASIB has a real shot at Best Pic if it does great box office, which will nab Cooper an Oscar as producer. He'll get nommed for Best Director as well - astounding for his first effort out.

by Anonymous | reply 540 | September 7, 2018 6:02 AM |
Everyone is mainly focusing on Gaga. But a more interesting question is: what is Cooper like as a Director? This will be his 'directorial debut', after all.
How did a guy who used to play bro-type douches suddenly transform into a lauded director (with his first feature, no less)? Is directing that easy or is he a secret 'creative genius'?
Is Cooper the new Affleck and Clooney? Mediocre actors who suddenly became Directors loved by the critics.

R541, for one thing Cooper is incredibly bright and well educated. He graduated with degree in literature from Georgetown and also has a Master of Fine Arts degree in acting from the Actors Studio Drama School at The New School in New York City.
by Anonymous | reply 543 | September 7, 2018 7:00 AM |
I didn't know that, R543. But specialised training in literature or acting doesn't explain such immediate and universal Directorial success (at first attempt, no less, and with a full-length feature film). I don't think Cooper even attempted directing any short films, ads or episodes before this feature.
Does that mean that one doesn't need any specialised training at all to become a Director of a feature film? Can any actor (who's seen a professional Director do it during filming) basically just pick it up easily and then quickly do it themselves then?
Is Cooper a prodigy genius or is this normal?
by Anonymous | reply 544 | September 7, 2018 7:56 AM |
One certainly does not need university studies in directing to be a director.
by Anonymous | reply 545 | September 7, 2018 11:07 AM |
Directing ain’t that hard. The cinematographer sets the shot up. All the director does is yell Action! at the actors. And if they’re halfway decent you look like a talented director. It’s all bs.

Rumors that Bradley mostly directed that Eastwood movie he did. Is that the reason he took the project away from Clint. Clearly the decision to not use real actors in his last movie came from a senile old man...

Bradley Cooper is a lot smarter than Affleck and Eastwood - you can tell that just by listening to all of them speak. He’s a savvy guy and ruthlessly ambitious and he surrounded himself with top notch people for this film.
I thought it would be a joke but it appears to be legit. I think it will make a ton of money at box office. Soundtrack will do well too.

Bradley received major Oscar talk for past films Silver Linings Playbook and American Sniper AND got lots of Tony buzz for Elephant Man. I think this time he’ll take some awards home. Goodness this movie has produced a long thread and it hasn't even opened. If the reviews are good, I may see it. Frankly, the story is kind of old- understatement- and not real interesting anyway. The reason I like the Garland and Streisand versions is because I am a fan of both. Not Streisand's best movie (understatement) and the Garland version was butchered in post release editing. But both these women had/have superb voices that I enjoy just seeing them each do their thing. I never can sit all the way through either film. I've tried to like Gaga- maybe she is a better actress than singer- as a singer she is really a mimic- always copying an earlier genre. As a singer songwriter she was interesting only in the beginning. She has not been able to sustain. She is not Joni Mitchell or even Madonna.
by Anonymous | reply 562 | September 7, 2018 8:45 PM |
r558 then he made a more self indulgent movie that made Streisand look humble. Got fat hit the bottle and it looks like fired as Batman lost the film as a director. Wonder Woman was a wonderful film that made all the dc male directors bad..

Seriously I'm 60 and love Judy but never was that crazy about her ASIB especially her sadly unable to restore original version. Also I recently watched Barbras and I enjoyed it and wasn't bad as I remembered. The bad parts are when they include Barbra's and Jon Peters real life love story...

The backlash has already started here on DL, so that's safe to say. Every frontrunner deals with this, and yes, sometimes doesn't end up winning. It just happened last year with Three Billboards. R573 Yeah, it received strong notices, though it also premiered alongside Alfonso Cuaron's Roma and Yorgos Lanthimos' The Favourite, both of which also got great reviews, so they all kind of shared the same positive buzz. The Vanity Fair review is so good it's almost embarrassing for all involved-
[quote].... when Gaga and Cooper are duetting, howling out the movie’s signature song “The Shallow,” Ally having been dragged on stage at first reluctantly, the movie explodes with vivid life. Cooper’s camera captures the enveloping rush as hearts open and lives change. These performance scenes are true magic, reveling in the shiver-inducing wonder of a religious revival and a coronation.
[quote] The totality of what Cooper is doing exists in proportion to everything around him, and he and Gaga flow with perfect, earthy chemistry. I’m surprised they didn’t fall madly in love while making the movie.
[quote] Cooper has a pleasant twang when he sings, projecting a melancholy, afternoon-y vibe that brings to mind Crazy Heart. (Which Jeff Bridges won an Oscar for. Hmmm.)

Were all these reviews bought? Gaga has somewhere between 100 and 200 million doesn't she? Maybe she is THAT thirsty and just bought all these reviews? Probably not even expensive to do so.

Glenn Close has already conceded the Oscar to Gaga after she saw the trailer. Melissa McCarthy is expected to release a statement to that as well.

That's a big ass award! I don't think I've ever seen it before. Good on her!

This still just boggle my mind. How good can this really be? The stars are aging, not very attractive. Gaga is a competent singer but she's no Whitney. The songs don't seem that good from what I've heard. This is the fourth remake. And finally, it seems like a dark and depressing storyline.

I don't buy any of this pr shilling, these bought reviews are embarrassingly awful. Talking about terrible actress gaga like she's the second coming when she look's like a tired 50 year old vegas show girl with tons of bad plastic surgery.

i don't doubt she's good in this movie (and she might be good only because it was so not expected from her), but i can't see the academy giving the oscar to someone at her first movie who's already had a huge success as a singer. It sounds quite disrespectful to other legitimate actors. Am i wrong?
