If Miss Universe objectifies women bodybuilding objectifies men even more. Both are similar in that they are based on sex appeal but bodybuilding is even more sexual whereas Miss Univese's sex appeal is toned down.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | September 6, 2018 6:50 AM |
The thing is, very few bodybuilders or bodybuilder fans refer to it as “sexual” or “erotic.” It’s almost never acknowledged as such. If you mention it in overt sexual terms, you will be viewed as a pervert, creep, weirdo. Same with male fitness modeling. The language of bodybuilding and male fitness is focused on G-rated Aesthetics.

R14 Yuck.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | September 7, 2018 2:00 AM |
You won't been as a pervert if you mention that bodybuilding is pretty sexual; what might happen is that would be seen as some kind of threat because saying so immediately makes them feel questioned in their sexuality given that it is mostly men staring at almost naked men flaunting their bodies. Every single bodybuilding fan knows how sexual the very spectacle is and that's the reason why they overreact. A guilty pleasure
Bodybuilding is a phallic spectacle. What does a bodybuilder look like with their hardened muscles and pumped up veins? They look like an erect penis. What does an erect penis symbolise? Strength, power, virility and attractiveness.

The very, very, muscular ones are short and that's why they can build massive muscle easily. "Short" is relative , but 5' 8" - 5' 9" is a perfect bodybuilding height.

What does that even mean? Muscle men running around with their asses hanging out IS sexualization. Bodybuilding is the glorification of the exaggerated male form. Sexualization is part of the deal.
by Anonymous | reply 90 | September 22, 2018 12:50 PM |
Most men hate the label “gay” and will avoid anything that would explicitly associate them with the stigmatized identity of “gay.” Bodybuilding is not unique in this regard. As long as it’s subtle and masculine, it’s usually okay. It’s the attempt to explicitly label or portray stuff as gay that is resisted

Says who? Do you speak for all bodybuilders?
You sound ridiculous. I highly doubt anyone feels "offended" (offended??) when a man "looks at them sexually" (what ever that might mean).
Plenty of bodybuilders (including champions) do posing and masturbation videos for money...or internet chats for money (they sure aren't done for a female audience). Or they escort for money. Or have they wealthy "sponsors".
Being a bodybuilder takes lots of time and money. Without gay support many of these men would never be able to compete.
And you have to understand that bodybuilding is even bigger in poorer countries than it is in the US.
Where do you think these guys get their money to pursue such a sport?

It may be a little dishonest for a bodybuilder to state that he doesn't bodybuild for sex appeal or to embody the ultimate ideal of male sex appeal because all bodybuilders bodybuild for sex appeal and sex. Some are more sexually motivated than others but all of them bodybuild for ultimately for sex.
Asserting that there is nothing sexual about bodybuilding and bodybuilding competitions only happens so when there is the suspicion of homosexuality in the air. As a single mass there isn't opposition to sexualization of bodybuilders if women happen to be the onlookers. The very act of putting your body up for competition is an act of sexualization. The sexualization of bodybuilders for gay men is rather implicit, secretive up for interpretation so that people don't feel threatened by homosexual desire.
If you have a look at bodybuilders' IGs-even those at the top level-the vast majority of them sexualize themselves one way or another, implicitly or explicitly. Take, for example, Branch Warren who uploads pics of himself taking women on his shoulders like a primitive man taking a woman for sex. He is sexualizing himself, he is sexualizing his own body, his own muscles as a sign of alpha male status and sexual superiority and he wants people to read him as such.

Men obsessed with building muscles are significantly more likely to objectify women, be hostile toward women, and have sexist attitudes, new research finds. This link may come from their own negative body image, the scientists added.
think men who hold oppressive beliefs about women and gender equality are also more likely to endorse traditional stereotypes of masculinity, which includes the muscular physique," Swarmi said.
"In addition, in societies where patriarchal structures are being challenged, some men may seek to reassert their masculinity by enhancing their physiques." For example, they might react to having a female boss by beefing up at the gym.
Mass media
Though they didn't study this directly, it is possible that the sexism and concentration on attaining muscle mass are both linked to increased consumption of mass media, Swarmi said: "It's likely being driven by changes in the way the ideal male physique is portrayed in the mass media."
But that's probably not the only reason for the correlation. "It seems likely that the mass media play a role in increasing levels of drive for muscularity we see in many contemporary societies, but we were interested in broader social influences," Swarmi said, for example, changes in gender dynamics away from a male-dominated society.
"We're arguing that patriarchal attitudes and beliefs also play a role," Swarmi said. Men with ideas that the family or company should be ruled by the man may have trouble dealing with changing gender roles in the modern world. Men may use their muscles to reassert their dominance and masculinity.
The study was published May 28 in the journal Psychology of Men & Masculinity.

Klein sees a link between narcissism and gender identity and suggests that, "gender narcissism involves the process of mirroring back to a person his or her gender as an ideal" (1993,215). Another theme of interest to Klein is the connection between professional bodybuilding and homophobia. As Klein explains, homophobia is a range of negative attitudes which frame what are considered the borders or limits of masculine identity, the antithesis of which is femininity. Masculine traits do not include so-called feminine characteristics, and femininity is to be avoided at all costs. Muscle, for male bodybuilders, represents a repudiation of feminine characteristics. For Klein this explains why, on the surface, bodybuilders' masculine identity is never in question. "The construction of masculinity in our society is, then, built on the equation of homosexuality with women's effeminacy, and the repudiation of both" (Klein 1993, 219). Homophobia not only regulates a "male identity" it reinforces a hegemonic masculinity. Homophobia and narcissism are, according to Klein, basic constituents of the hypermasculinity so prized in American culture. In Klein's final chapter, "Comic Book Masculinity and Cultural Fiction" (1993), he argues that the crisis of masculinity is experienced similarly by men who do not work out, regardless of how muscled bodybuilders become. Although Klein spends a considerable amount of time describing bodybtulding as a subculture he is evidently aware of how bodybiiilders' notions of masculinity are tied to broader cultural ideals of masculinity.

“For most men at the gym, being associated with women, or femininity, was detested and to be avoided at all costs. ”
by Anonymous | reply 162 | September 25, 2018 3:07 AM |
“The hypermasculinity which surrounds much of the gym is, in part, a reaction to, what Bob might call, societal pressures. The possibility for homoerotic desire of the male body, or the image of hegemonic masculinity, imdermines the orthodox construction of gender. The paradox comes from the fact that the response to consuming images of same sex bodies is in direct conflict with orthodox mascxiline behaviour. Listening to two heterosexual men at the gym complementing another lifter on his muscular development and sexual appeal highlights the paradox. As well. Bob seemed thoroughly disturbed by the fact that he realized that he was paying much more attention to other men, rather than focusing his attention on the women in the gym. As I have learned after many years of working out it is acceptable to gaze at other men and be in awe of their muscular development, but it is not acceptable to find that behaviour sexually stimulating. In fact, if one man accuses another man of looking at men in a sexual fashion there is most often a defense of one's heterosexuality. For example, on occasion I have been witness to individuals criticizing one another about actively watching other men workout. During my time at Club Flex I observed one such incident which demonstrates this point. The gym was filled with people when a bodybmlder from another fitness facility entered the gym floor with a photographer and a couple of trainers^s. Some of the other men in the gym were intrigued by the newcomer, but most did not give him a passing glance. Fie proceeded to do a couple of exercises, perhaps as a means to warm-up his muscles. After these few cursory sets the man pulled his top off to pose for a few photographs. It was at this time that the majority of the male gym members focused their attention on this man, if only, for some, for a brief moment. Upon gazing at this man one member approached another and said, "FFey, maybe ya' should propose?" The man to whom this statement was directed looked embarrassed by the derogatory comment and replied, "Shut up, fag!"

The construction of masculinity that surrounds bodybuilding is tightly linked to homosexual men. The Greek version of masculinity from where bodybuilding also stems is a product of homosexual and bisexual men.
The kind of masculinity that vilifies homosexuality and treats is a a threat is the Judeo-christian version. Today's bodybuilding is conditioned by the Judeo-christian version while still practising a homosexual activity: bodybuilding.

Dickerson won the Mr. Olympia once (1982), a distinction he shares with Samir Bannout (1983) and Dexter Jackson (2008).

It’s erroneous and reductionist to paint all bodybuilders with a broad brush. Yes, there are some that are gay-friendly for cultural, political, or marketing purposes. There are some that at least covertly embrace being sexualized. But there is a significant percentage of bodybuilders that are authentically socially and politically conservative, who somehow do not think of what they are doing as sexual or erotic. Some bodybuilders are devout religious conservatives who strongly believe lust and any sex outside marriage are gravely Immoral and sinful. This includes amateur and hobbyist bodybuilders as well as professionals.

I do think many gay men who have encountered willingly overtly sexualized bodybuilders tend to presume that just because a guy is a bodybuilder, he is okay with being sexualized or propositioned. Well, no, and it’s offensive if the person is not into that to communicate with them in a way that presumes they are. If the bodybuilder has a negative reaction, it’s on the person who presumed they are open to overt sexualization.

The problem with that statement is that bodybuilding is actually very sexual. Bodybuilders tend to have higher sex drive due to higher levels of testosterone which means they think of sex and need sex much morre than the average man. Yeah, some bodybuilders are so-called conservatives and even religious although that shows the contradiction they live in where they turn a blind eye to the conflict between what they practise (bodybuilding) and the religion they believe in which typically looks down on sex and obsession with physical appearance. Let me deviate a bit; I'm curious about something. Here is a shot of Vic Seipke, a champion bodybuilder. He and other bodybuilders of the 50s-60s era kept their pubic hair intact, (the competition posing suits were much more conservative at the time) and many went full-frontal for photographers. So, which came first, the skimpier posing suits or the desire to shave the crotch clean? Are there any modern bodybuilders who don't shave their crotches anymore?
by Anonymous | reply 219 | September 29, 2018 12:45 AM |
The tiny posing suits was a gradual process, although it is known that throughout the history of modern bodybuilding many bodybuilders pushed the boundaries to the point it was necessary to regulate the size of posing suits to avoid explicit sexualisation of the "sport" by bodybuilders. That pretty much reveals that bodybuilders also experience an element of eroticism in being a bodybuilder.
by Anonymous | reply 220 | September 29, 2018 1:18 AM |
I've been told the posing suits are smaller because the bodybuilders want to display some lower abdominal muscles the older, more conservative, posing suits did not. Hence, the shaving as well. When did the evolution go into high gear?

R218 The bodybuilder smoking a cigarette. Ha!
by Anonymous | reply 222 | September 29, 2018 2:33 AM |
The size of posing suits is regulated for all bodybuilding competitions around the world I would say. The fear of bodybuilding becoming a sexual spectacle that may scare the family and heterosxual men away was the concern. But the reality today is that no one respects that clause anymore. As you have seen in the pics lots of bodybuilders keep wearing them smaller and more revealing. You may wonder why judges and bodybuiding organizations still have the clause but don't really put it into action...

Bodybuilding has always been playing around eroticism. You simply cannot separate bodybuilding from the erotic.
Bodybuilding is literally a mild form of stripping, bodybuilders literally do the same a male stripper does, they both appear on a stage scantily clad and they both use their bodies to impress their audience. Why do they have judges in bodybuilding if not to judge their body beauty? If people feel eroticised by the sight of a bodybuilder it is simply the natural reaction to a spectacle that brims with erotic appeal. There is nothing really valuable about muscles except for sex appeal.

Take iT all off
by Anonymous | reply 243 | September 30, 2018 4:22 AM |
I know quite a few competitive bodybuilders. When they are onstage, the last thing they are thinking about is oozing sex appeal. They are more concerned their muscles will actually flex as expected, they hit on the right notes of their background music, their water weight hasn't bloated them, their tan isn't too dark or too light, the judges are seeing them from the right angle and are judging fairly. After they walk off stage, all they can think about is food and water, food and water.
They may get laid that night if they have a significant other. Otherwise they are exhausted and fall asleep.
by Anonymous | reply 244 | September 30, 2018 5:27 AM |
The fact that some bodybuilders experience decreased sex drive during competitions does not mean that the show is deprived of eroticism and that bodybuilders don't intend to look sexier than average men. It only takes to go to one bodybuilding show and see that many bodybuilders one way or another sexualize their presence on stage either subtly or explicitly. It can be the posing suit, the music they choose, the look in their eyes, etc.
It should be clear to anyone in this video how Steve is being provocative with the flexing, pec bouncing and even the conviniently loose posing suit which gives a clear look at his bouncy balls and cock. He even approches a man right off the stage to literally rub his muscles on his face.

Sexy sluts
by Anonymous | reply 246 | September 30, 2018 6:45 AM |
R245 was doing nothing but looking like an Alpha man. Many bodybuilders bounce their pecs because they can (and many other men cannot.) They bounce them all the time at the gym. They shake their legs to loosen them up before they flex them, so the flex is deeper and more noticeable. The strut and arm flexing at the end of the routine was used to make a lasting statement of his strength. There was nothing sexual here, at least not in the intent. I completely understand members in the audience may find the posing stimulating; its not lost on the bodybuilders, either. To them, that's collateral. They want to look the biggest and the baddest on stage. If you attend bodybuilding shows, watch the obvious bodybuilders in the audience, they are competing to look the biggest and baddest in the lobby and in the seats. Sometimes the audience is more entertaining than the bodybuilders in the show.
Many of the men onstage may be open to an opportunity to earn money by displaying their bodies privately. That's collateral, as well. The minute they walk out of the room where they display themselves privately, they're thinking about the amount of protein and carbs they haven't consumed that day yet. Or they are counting the money they just received and wondering where they parked their car. The client was a client, that's all. They are putting "supply" and "demand" into practice. You demand, they supply. It's a business transaction.
I think a bodybuilder is sexy as hell. But on that's me, not him. He wants me to see the thickness of his pecs. I am looking at his nipples. He wears a tiny posing suit to show off the lowest striations of his abs. I'm looking at how bulbous the head of his cock is. If there were nude bodybuilding competitions, there would be bodybuilders willing to enter them. I'd be looking at their cocks. They'd be worried about visible stubble surrounding them. I'd look at how low their balls are hanging. They would be worried I wouldn't see the full extent of their inner thighs.
I'm playing devil's advocate here. To bodybuilders, it's all about the show. We enjoy them sexually. Let's not give them so much credit.

by Anonymous | reply 248 | September 30, 2018 1:07 PM |
R247 is correct. A lot of people here project “sexual” unto things just because they are sexually attracted by it. In this case, bodybuilders often Aren’t intending to be sexual or erotic; only a certain segment of gay men are responding to them sexually. Some people here conflate Alpha male peacocking and showmanship with being flirtatious and sexually provocative.

You probably don't know who he is. Like R248 said, he's been in gay porn for over ten years now doing jerkoff videos and striptease-like videos for the gay-oriented studio JimmyZ. His stage name is Hans Hoffmann. He is a very sexual heterosexual bodybuilder who isn't afraid to be provocative on stage. Watch his YT channel and his IG. He is not innocently bouncing his pecs; he is clearly enticing and provoking with his moves. You probably cannot read the subtext when a bodybuilder implies one. He knows his audeince, he is not fooled by anyone and he knows what they want and he does what he enjoys. By the way, the bodybuilder in the gif posted by OP is also Steve Benthin. R247

In primitive times humans needed strong muscle men to increase their chances of survival either to fight off rival clans or to defend their community from wild animals. Obviously, because they were strong they had to risk their safety for the sake of their community which relied on their physical superiority.
In order to encourage men to become strong for the sake of their community nature sexualized the male body, nature sexualized their muscles making muscles men sexier and giving them more chaces o have sex which is benefitiona for the body and mind. So, they fight for us and in turn nature give them more sex.
So basically, the reason why gay men love muscles and eroticise masculinity is because nature tries to encourage men to be stronger for the community and nature rewards them with more sexual pleasure. It's a sexy cycle of strength and sex.

by Anonymous | reply 282 | October 2, 2018 2:58 AM |
Just because a guy likes muscles doesn't mean he doesn't like or feel attracted to other qualities in other people. That's reductionism.
As with many things in life nothing is an absolute in sex. What nature seems to do is favouring certain traits if they will help a species. In this case, strong men certainly increased the chances of a community to survive. In order to promote and encourage men to become strong nature eroticized muscles and masculine traits. The greater need for sex and the greater chances for sex that muscle men certainly have is nature rewarding them so that they stay strong for as long as they are young; that way physicality feels more pleasurable and some mor men would do.
Gay men are not being shallow for liking bodybuilders. It's simply our instincts, nature doing its thing for the sake of our species. Have you noticed how common it is among gay couples spending time in the gym or doing regular exercise?

I have always wanted to watch that USAMuscle video. Not only Paul but also all the other bodybuilders seemed to have given a pretty sexulized spectacle if you watch the preview.

Why is it so offensive that many of the men regardless how heterosexual tey may act in public and the girlfirnds they may have actually like bodybuilding because they experience some degree of attraction to men? Is it really unlikely that a huge number of thoe men are turned on by muscle men to any degree? This is a fucking beauty pageant.
by Anonymous | reply 294 | October 5, 2018 3:00 PM |
Have you ever been in a hard-core bodybuilding gym, R294? One where they stare at themselves in the mirrors endlessly, where they act like indignant peacocks with ruffled feathers when a bigger guy walks in, where they grunt loudly while doing squats, where they are oblivious their string tank tops don't come close to covering their nipples? They are more like cavemen than renaissance men. They're not giving a thought to how other men look. They scowl when other men look at them. It isn't the gay games by any stretch of the imagination. Bodybuilding is business. The only person they are focused on is themselves. It would be likely one or two might be gay and closeted; you wouldn't know who they were. No signals would be coming our way. I know enough straight bodybuilders with wives and kids to know a bodybuilder seeking the assets of other men would be in a small minority.
by Anonymous | reply 295 | October 5, 2018 11:57 PM |
There are all kinds of personalities and sexual orientations in the gym as a whole, but please, bodybuilding is all about sexy bodies of men. There is nothing incogruent about gay men and muscles; they go hand in hand becase the mae body is our thing. R295
by Anonymous | reply 296 | October 6, 2018 3:55 AM |
If bodybuilding is all about sexy bodies of men (and I'm all for it), why are they bothering to wear posing suits at all? If we're going to judge a sexy body, I prefer to see everything before I score it. The male body is our thing, after all.
This model, for example, scores major points (from me) in areas unrelated to the sinew of his body. If the original Olympians competed naked, and were considered heroes if they brought back a gold medal to their city-states, then why the hell are we expecting some body parts to be tucked away in a tiny nylon/spandex pocket? Can a competitive bodybuilder also have a beautiful cock?
If we're judging sexy. give me sexy. Why else are they on stage?

Just because an activity like bodybuilding is founded around and exploits male sex appeal doesn't mean it has to become an explicitly pornographic spectacle. Something can me sexual or sexually stimulating without having to remove all clothes. R297
Does Miss Universe judge the sexiness of female beauty? Why are womne competing standing beautiful and scantily clad?
The idea is judging secondary sex traits of men; not their sex organs. Although that doesn't rule out the fact that some bodybuilders do in fact choose certain posing suits in case it may help them seduce judges and condition their judging.
by Anonymous | reply 299 | October 7, 2018 6:47 AM |
Nudity does not equal pornography. You can pose nude without stimulating the audience sexually. If it's too stimulating, that's on you, not the bodybuilder. It's not much different than a bodybuilder posing nude for an art class. How many students have to excuse themselves from the classroom because their libidos overrule their concentration?
There are people out there who see a direct correlation between the muscles of a bodybuilder and overt sexual stimulation, no matter how much the bodybuilder insists they are not on stage to generate that stimulation. Then those same people decide how much sexual stimulation is too much, limiting the bodybuilder in their choice of posing attire. You can't have it both ways.

I have a bodybuilder friend who poses nude for life-drawing classes at the local university. He says its tougher than being onstage, you have to hold frozen poses for ten-fifteen minutes at a time. He doesn't modify his body hair, it was a requirement for the gig. He says the students and he often socialize together. If he's not uptight about it, and the art students aren't uptight either, then aren't there enough grown-ups around to create room for a nude contest in this universe?

by Anonymous | reply 306 | October 9, 2018 12:37 AM |
Nudity would ruin bodybuilding as a profitable spectacle and industry because men could not explain how their interest and fascination with beholding naked men with their cocks in the open who flaunt their sexy bodies in a beauty contest is not flat-out (homo)sexually-inclined. They can more or less deal with the homoerotic overotnes of bodybuilding but they could do it with explicit nudity.
Suggesting rather than being explicit is what keeps bodybuilding less threatening for heterosexual men. R300

Here is Tony Sansone. He was one of America's first "professional" bodybuilders. Charles Atlas mentored him and called him "the Most Beautiful Man in America". He modeled for paintings, sculptures and photographs during his career in the 1920s-30s, mostly nude. People in the "physical culture" movement were more enlightened then.

by Anonymous | reply 318 | October 10, 2018 4:48 AM |
The several people who have submitted most of the weekend's posts here are on entirely different playing fields. You can't have a discussion if one person is a competitive bodybuilder who claims he doesn't feel an iota of sexual appeal as he builds his muscles, and another person insists a bodybuilder must have some need to show off his penis, whether he knows people are looking at it or not. One person says the bodybuilder wants people to appreciate the size/thickness of muscles he has worked out for the past five/ten years. Another says the bodybuilder has no reason to be onstage other than to provide some element of sexual tension. Who knows what the audience is really thinking? Who's more right here?
by Anonymous | reply 321 | October 10, 2018 5:48 AM |
It is very unlikely there isn't a degree of sex appeal involved in building muscles. What happens is that some bodybuilders are more motivated by sex than others but all of them pursue the ultimate ideal of male sex appeal and that's what bodybuilding competitions celebrate.
Don't forget that this kind of physical exertion raises sex drive and if you add steroids to the mix sex drive goes crazy high.
The only bodybuilders who don't experience this are those who have lost their sex drive due to anabolics but even then in their minds sex still exists.

I used to work out at one of those athletic clubs. Men have been swimming nude there for over a hundred years. They didn't have goggles back then. Now you can watch the dangled bits go by as you do laps. I knew who was swimming in the lanes next to me by their pubic hair.
I never had overt sexual thoughts while looking at these men, and some of them had the bodies of gods. There was nothing going on in the steam room. It was all totally professional. Maybe that's the way bodybuilding is to the men who do it.
by Anonymous | reply 344 | October 13, 2018 1:55 AM |
People (99% men) who are fan of bodybuilding have no interest in art, they don't spend money on museums or taking art classes. These people love the implied mesages of the muscular body, they like the idea od strength, power and sex. That's all.

In reproductive years that' why men do bodybuilding, they want to become living staues of "male perfection" and sex appeal.

By "professional" you mean famous? Professional is a complicated word under the context of bodybuilding because it is not a profession or a field that needs a degree to become a bodybuilder. And by "porn" you mean penetrative sex only or sex in general?
Kai Greene is the most known case of a highly successful bodybuilder who was in gay porn, although apparently he was previously a stripper so he was a sexual man from the beginning.
I don't think you will hear many names from top bodybuilders but it is also well known that behind closed doors they may provide some private services to rich men and bodybuilding judges. Some pics and rumours seem to indicate they may not be against intimate appreciation from men...

by Anonymous | reply 405 | November 8, 2018 12:00 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 408 | November 8, 2018 4:49 AM |
I have worked in proximity to bodybuilders for the past 35 years, in gyms, in promotions, in trade shows. The overwhelming majority of these men don’t look at themselves as sex symbols. They are everyday doctors, engineers, lawyers, musicians. Many of them have families. They have a profound interest in the physical development and growth of muscle. I’ve heard men make goals of benching ten reps with twenty more pounds by the end of six months, modifying their workout routines to increase the size of their biceps by two inches in three months, correcting their form while doing squats over a period of a couple of weeks. They view it as a challenge to themselves to achieve their personal growth goals. I can think of ten out of several hundred over the past three decades who have indicated they desire overt sexual pleasure or worship as a goal to achieve. Why are all bodybuilders associated with the intentions of a very small percentage of the community? I see people here paint a wide brush saying ALL bodybuilders are motivated by sex. ALL audiences want to compare sex appeal among contestants. It’s CRAP. These people do not know bodybuilders. Considering it all about sex IS shallow. Go to any gym and interview a couple of dozen bodybuilders regarding these theories. You will be disregarded as credible. Ask them why they desire to wear a tiny, tiny posing suit. It’s the same reason they coat themselves with tinted oil. They want the definition of muscle to be highlighted. Their penises are the farthest thing in their minds. I know some who would be so insulted by your preconceptions they would walk away from the interview. I do take offense when someone makes assumptions about the motivations of some very good people I have known for decades. I feel like I need to defend them here, because I see the truth. I know the men. If you have a theory about industry-wide sex appeal and bodybuilding, something you can show overwhelming proof, link us to the research.
Not all gay men are flamboyant. Not all of us like anal sex. Not all of us have three or four sex partners a week. We all know what marginalization is. Give bodybuilders the same respect and understanding we desire.

Any person with half a brain should understand that to the wider public, men parading around in ultra skimpy posing suits flexing their muscles has a sexual connotation.
Pretending it doesn't is idiotic.
by Anonymous | reply 414 | November 9, 2018 10:22 AM |
Usually, bodybuilders won't talk about the sex part of bodybulding with anybody because they don't want to be perceived as narcissistic and sex crazed, but if you have the chance to be more intimate with them sex floats in the air. It's not that bodybuilders see themselves as sex objects or are thinking about that all the time; it's that they want to look hot as hell. Part of their high self-esteem is precisely because sex is highly accessible to them which most men don't experience.
All bodybuilders started doing it fascinated with the idea of looking hot, and then ideas of power, strength, but it is hotness that lifts their self-esteem and hotness is what theindustry exploits.

by Anonymous | reply 418 | November 9, 2018 9:07 PM |
I agree with R409 that the number of bodybuilders who are motivated by sexual pleasure are a very small minority among them. The men posted and talked about here are the only ones we address in this thread. If they didn't have the attributes we are seeking, we're not going to spend any time on them here. We seek pictures which comply with our beliefs and we draw attention to them.
That said, I am very attracted to men who are willing to show off every inch of their bodies. I always enjoy looking at the clothed picture of a Colt or Playgirl model, knowing I am going to see him naked when I turn the page. Their willingness to go that extra mile makes them hot. SO hot. There are very many bodybuilders I have seen who are not attractive to me, or I fear might beat me up if I asked them to show me what's underneath the posing suit. I'd venture they are 80% of the total population of bodybuilders out there. We are talking about the 20% who fit our criteria. We can't put all the rest of them in the same box for our pleasure.

What do strong men do when they want to attract sexual attraction from a person they feel interested in? They flaunt their muscles because developed muscles are a sign of male sexual maturity, sexual availbility and strength. Men are supposed to feel good and sexy when they flex their muscles and, in turn they evetually stimulate the eventual partner. This is instinctive, the primitive form of courtship performed by men.
How could bodybuildiqng not be sexual when it is all about enhancing secondary sex traits and flaunting them as when men courted in primitive times? Bodybuilders literally court the judges on stage with their display of muscularity and flexing. It is indeed courtship.

Most bodybuilders I know want to grow muscle. That's the bottom line. They want to see progress and get bigger. I've never known a bodybuilder who was motivated by sexual display. They want to grow two more inches on their biceps, four more inches on their chests, three more inches on their thighs. The only people they want to impress are themselves. It's a challenge, a goal to achieve. I think we're adding a sexual element which doesn't apply to the majority. Yes, they like to pose in a skimpy suit, but only because they want us to see how big their muscles are. That's what they want to accomplish. "I want you to admire the gains I've made." If anything sexual was afoot, the majority would perform in strip clubs to get their jollies, not a bodybuilding stage.

Maybe it’s just my experience, but I’ve worked out at a World Gym for ten years, full of bodybuilders and a gorilla mascot, and I see how radically they change getting ready for a competition. They wear sweat shirts and sweat pants for several weeks before the contest, so others cannot see how they’re growing. Their diets become a mix of chicken, potatoes, broccoli and eggs, and none of them like it. They shave their entire bodies daily, so they don’t get ingrown hairs making an appearance onstage. Most don’t enjoy wearing a tiny posing suit in front of hundreds of people, they’d rather have bigger suits which cover more of their groin. They don’t drink fluids for several days prior to the competition. They put pressure on themselves to do well for the businesses that sponsor them. They are pains in the ass to be around as the contest gets closer, and they are so relieved to eat and drink again the night after the contest is over. Why would anyone do this for one night of being sexy on a stage? The men I know have different motivations. They want to rub it in if they place higher than others. It's being the biggest and baddest. It's more gorilla and less peacock then some here are painting it. I don't see "sexiness" in bodybuilding culture at all, and I know most of them enough to be invited to their weddings, to celebrate their work promotions, to be asked to join in on family dinners. They do have minds which think differently than most, but sexiness is not a part of the equation.

How could a bodybuilder hate wearing posing suits and get on stage when they work out for exhibition? It is like saying a teacher who loves teaching hates teaching. It makes no sense.
You make it sound like working out to build sexy bodies is imposed on them when no one imposed it on them; they work out and compete scantily clad becuse they like it.
by Anonymous | reply 438 | November 19, 2018 12:30 AM |
I am speaking of the many bodybuilders I have known for the past ten years, R438. Unless there is something underneath the surface they don't want to talk about, and they do talk about their intimate lives after you've gained their trust because you see them practically every day, I don't see the sexy element you describe. They want to be strong. They want to have the biggest auxiliary muscle tucked deep inside you most people has ever heard of. They don't like shaving their crotches. This is ten years of deep friendship talking. There are many I know who could make a ton of money modeling or stripping, but they don't. They know I'm gay, yet none have given me an exhibition they think I want. I would be an obvious target for muscle worship. They don't offer it, to me or to the females at the gym. They have lives and significant others like all the rest of us do. They are professional people. Bodybuilding audiences are composed of friends and family, just like a play or a music recital. What professional person would display a sexual motivation in front of friends and family? You'll find the men you describe at a JimmyZ's muscle show or a street fair in San Francisco, not at a gym or a sanctioned bodybuilding contest. You can lose your "card" from a bodybuilding association for overt sexual display or behavior at a competition. After all of the work, it isn't worth losing recognition because you enjoy flaunting yourself in inappropriate ways.
by Anonymous | reply 439 | November 19, 2018 1:22 AM |
Most men don't want to shave their crotch, that's logical, but that doesn't mean that bodybuilders don't like to show off their bodies. They build bodies for exhibition, they live for it R439
by Anonymous | reply 440 | November 19, 2018 1:34 AM |
Bodybuilders like to exhibit their bodies, there's no denying that. But they want you to see how big their muscles are, how much bigger they are to the other guys in the posedown, not how much sexier they are. R439 is right. Bodybuilding audiences are full of family and friends. You CAN lose your pro card if you are overtly seeking sexual attention. No contest sponsor or bodybuilding federation wants to be a part of that.

If someone has given the situation some thought, why do you think so many bodybuilders being adult men wear such skimpy posing suits, why do they like drawing attention to their crotch area, does it turn them on, it make them feel virile or something? Are they trying to beguile the gay/bi judges for extra points?
by Anonymous | reply 488 | January 10, 2019 4:28 AM |
No
by Anonymous | reply 489 | January 10, 2019 5:09 AM |
The judges aren't looking at the posing suits, R488. These men work out four hours a day, six days a week, to make their bodies the best on stage. Why would they do that if all they wanted was the judges to look at their crotches? They can't masturbate four hours a day so their penis gets bigger. They are concentrating on their muscles, as do the judges.
Do you know how long it takes to learn how to spread your lats correctly? How much intricate lifting you do to make your obliques look like marble? The judges do. They reward hard work.
You may be the only one in the room looking at crotches. I'd be careful if I were you. Other people may notice. You will be out of your element. If these men, on stage and off, are allegedly using steroids, their anger may allegedly confront you.
Offer your services as a "schmoe" to these bodybuilders. You can take pictures of them in a private setting, and the most financially needy will go full-frontal for you, on the condition you will not share the photos. They'll know you're not a "real" photographer. They'll know you just want to stimulate yourself. They'll mock you for it later.
Some will even let you suck their dicks for two hundred dollars a pop. To them, they are earning money to pay the rent, nothing more.
Get to know the bodybuilding culture. It is far from the sexually charged atmosphere you suspect it is. It's all business, all of it.
by Anonymous | reply 491 | January 13, 2019 11:08 PM |
No one said judges were looking at the posing suit as part of their judging criteria although some actually do. However, some bodybuilders do wear skimpy posing suits because they know showing a bit more can influence he judging in their favour or at least try. If you think bodybuilders don't do it then you are naive at the very least or in denial. These men are not wearing revealing posing suits innocently or by coincidence; they try them on before getting on stage; they perfectly know what they are doing. Why do you think there is a rule that regulates posing suits?
Sorry to break it to you but bodybuilding is not the holy puritanic activity you are trying to portray here. If you are uncomfortable with this then you should leave this thread which is all about bodybuilding flaunting their stuff.

by Anonymous | reply 498 | January 19, 2019 5:38 PM |
That's hard to tell because the person who films seems to have experience holding a camera and the quality of his videos seem pretty professional.
There are a few websites that sell videos of recorded bodybuilding shows and they don't pay any bdybuilder; that would ruin the business. The retribution comes from exposure. Bodybuilders need to be visible for eventual sponsors.
by Anonymous | reply 499 | January 20, 2019 9:22 AM |
Most bodybuilding shows allow you to photograph or film one person in the show, someone you are there to support. If you are taking pictures or filming multiple competitors in a show, it is assumed you are doing this for financial gain. The show sponsors and organizers usually announce they have purchased the photography and video rights to the show. They may grant you permission if you ask them ahead of time to allow you to photograph/film multiple people. If you are caught, they may elect to sue you for infringement.
I know one man who would film the competitors at many shows in the area. He suddenly stopped doing it. Maybe a bodybuilder threatened him. Maybe the organizers caught him in the act. I don't know what happened.

This reminds me when I used to chat with Middle Eastern bodybuilders and they would tell they felt sexy and strong on stage and that people see them like sperheroes and stuff. For some bodybuilders it is a turn-on to feel desired as they flex their muscles on stage even if spectators are all men.
It's interesting that while homophobia is criminal in those places bodybuilding is a world apart where mere admiration and homoerotic appeal are literally indistinguishable and pretty much welcome for their power to boost and complement the ego. Well, this happens in the west too but it is more interesting when you observe it in places where homosexuality is persecuted criminally.
by Anonymous | reply 585 | March 5, 2019 3:59 PM |
Well, R585... little is spoken about all of what happens underground. Everyone wants to be desired sexually regardless of where or who those desires come from. I'm sure that many of these people enjoy the weight training and the bodybuilding but that doesn't dismiss the sexual desires and attention that they want.
