I worship Martha Plimpton

And I have worshipped her ever since The Mosquito Coast, when she told River Phoenix that she thinks about him when she goes to the bathroom.

I can’t imagine an actress I’d enjoy a boozy dinner with more.

Here she is singing one of my favorite songs, which I just came across. A very pleasant surprise.

Why? She's a tiresome narcissist. When she was in London in OTHER DESERT CITIES and then on Bway in A DELICATE BALANCE, she was loathed pretty much all round.

by Anonymousreply 1August 30, 2018 12:15 AM

I have friends in common with her, and have known her since the mid 90s. She's just as fun as you'd imagine, and I adore her.

by Anonymousreply 2August 30, 2018 12:16 AM

Yes she's fabulous, so funny. She stole every episode of The Good Wife she appeared in. Keith Carradine's daughter, the apple didn't fall far.

by Anonymousreply 3August 30, 2018 12:19 AM

She’s like a less cunty Patti LuPone.

by Anonymousreply 4August 30, 2018 12:27 AM

" 'Mary' is not a homosexual term, Tina."

Love her droll, sarcastic delivery!

by Anonymousreply 6August 30, 2018 12:31 AM

She is fab! I hope she ends up on The Good Fight this season. Who says she is loathed in the Broadway community? She wouldn't have multiple Tony award nominations if that was the case

by Anonymousreply 7August 30, 2018 12:33 AM

I am the same age as her and have seen her around the UWS for decades. She shops at this Gristedes on Bway. She looks down to earth.

by Anonymousreply 8August 30, 2018 12:38 AM

Somebody needs to become best friends with her and tell us all her stories.

by Anonymousreply 9August 30, 2018 12:39 AM

fugly and not distinctive as an actress - pretentious on top of that - hate her

by Anonymousreply 10August 30, 2018 12:55 AM

She is a lot cuntier than PattiLu.

by Anonymousreply 11August 30, 2018 12:56 AM

I love her, too. She was in last night’s season finale of Younger and was great as always,

by Anonymousreply 12August 30, 2018 1:03 AM

I think she's done some good, interesting and varied work over many years. The recent FOX sitcom was a disappointment, but i think every actor needs that kind of income along the way. I loved her in the movie Pecker. "no balls on foreheads!"

Weird R1, I guess you must be doing the cunt-reply. I know her and have both worked with her (film) and have socialized with her, and no one I know has that opinion. She's wonderful.

by Anonymousreply 14August 30, 2018 1:08 AM

I don't regret the recent sitcom, it proved she's pro-gay, which makes anyone more likable in my eyes.

Sort of a functional Amanda Plummer. Love her too.

by Anonymousreply 17August 30, 2018 1:22 AM

One of my favorites. Never disappoints.

by Anonymousreply 18August 30, 2018 2:21 AM

Love her, love everything about her, thinking of going as her for Halloween.

by Anonymousreply 19August 30, 2018 2:23 AM

She should play Zelda Fitzgerald.

by Anonymousreply 20August 30, 2018 2:28 AM

Raising Hope was a great sitcom. She and Garrett Dillahunt worked perfectly together. I hope they work together again on another project. Love this broad!

by Anonymousreply 21August 30, 2018 2:37 AM

I actually have had dinner with her at Fred's on Amsterdam Ave in NY. We have a very close mutual friend and it was her birthday. As an aside, this friend had scheduled her wedding for her birthday several years before and was dumped after the invitations went out and she had already had an engagement party. Now, her birthday is eternally ruined because all she talks about on her birthday is getting dumped by her fiance. It actually is sort of funny. Back to Martha. she is unable to process any information or conversation that isn't about her. When she mentioned someone I had worked with, I said I really liked them. She shreeked and shouted "What is wrong with you?!". I told her the other person really liked her and she immediately backed down. In other words, she is a spineless cunt.

by Anonymousreply 22August 30, 2018 2:38 AM

I enjoy being a cunt....just like you bitches

by Anonymousreply 23August 30, 2018 2:43 AM

I wish we could summon her to Datalounge.

by Anonymousreply 24August 30, 2018 2:45 AM

R21, loved her in Raising Hope. Was so bummed when that got axed. Enjoyed her singing & dancing with Colbert in Company, too.

by Anonymousreply 25August 30, 2018 2:59 AM

Love her.......loved her appearance on "Bitter, Party of Five"

I'm still bummed they cancelled The Real O'Neals.

by Anonymousreply 27August 30, 2018 4:10 PM

Just saw her yesterday on The Good Wife (an episode from season 2). Endlessly entertaining. Possibly the most unpredictable actress on the show, and they have a pretty good cast.

by Anonymousreply 28August 30, 2018 4:17 PM

Love the story R22. Love to watch her in TV shows, would never want to spend time with her.

by Anonymousreply 29August 30, 2018 4:19 PM

R25, count me in as one who enjoyed her performance in Company!

by Anonymousreply 30August 30, 2018 4:23 PM

She reminds me of a girl I went to school with. I knew her on-and-off from the ages of 5 to 18. Anyway this is pretty much what she looks like now (alcohol). And she was a lot like that. It's very entertaining to watch on stage (she did theatre), it's miserable as a co-student. She had close to zero friends at school, actively seeked people off if that makes sense. She didn't make much sense actually. Constantly "angry" at everything.

She came from a privileged background and ended up with a government job in "Culture".

She still can't find people to like her and has gained a ton of weight.

Met her. She goes to NYC pride and loves the gays.

Super fun chick and fabulous in person but takes absolutely zero shit from anyone.

by Anonymousreply 33August 30, 2018 4:44 PM

I loved it when she guest starred on 7th Heaven as Venus and tries to date a clearly underage Tyler Hoechlin, who she thinks is a 20 something police officer.

by Anonymousreply 34August 30, 2018 4:44 PM

I have to say the video I posted myself at R31 is one of the most amazing things I've ever seen. I would go watch this woman on stage - row 10 or 12.

by Anonymousreply 35August 30, 2018 4:51 PM

Her Twitter account is pretty great.

by Anonymousreply 36August 30, 2018 4:53 PM

I liked in both both sitcoms. I think Raising Hope ran out of gas in season four.

I find that link that OP posted really irritating. Why was she whispering the lyrics?

by Anonymousreply 37August 30, 2018 5:52 PM

Have you seen her on Younger? She plays quite a character on that.

by Anonymousreply 38August 30, 2018 5:59 PM

My dress did not wave.

by Anonymousreply 39August 30, 2018 6:04 PM

Always a delight, a special treat on “The Good Wife” and “How to Make It in America”.

by Anonymousreply 40August 30, 2018 6:16 PM

She was wonderful in her one episode of Fringe many years back when she played the sheriff of a small town. She is a remarkably versatile actress.

by Anonymousreply 41August 30, 2018 6:38 PM

Love Martha, especially on Raising Hope.

Would love to find a funny friend like her.

by Anonymousreply 42August 30, 2018 6:42 PM

She lives three houses down from me in Brooklyn. Very nice lady.

by Anonymousreply 43August 30, 2018 6:51 PM

For some odd reason, ever since I realized that she could sing, I've wanted her to play Mama Rose and Mrs. Lovett on stage.

by Anonymousreply 44August 30, 2018 8:15 PM

I've told this story on DL before, but I've never seen a thread devoted to Martha so I'll tell it again:

I worked as an intern for a talent agency while in college in NYC. I was 21 yrs old. Martha, at 13, was a client. At that time, she was only known for her Calvin Klein commercial. She was very sweet when she'd come into the office, and she was just a normal kid. Not precocious or obnoxious, no self-entitlement. She'd hang out with me while waiting for appointments and we'd just shoot the shit. I worked there one year.

About 10 years later, long after her career had taken off, I recognized her on a NYC street. She was walking in my direction. We made eye contact and I smiled, but never assumed she'd remember me. Her eyes lit up, "Mike??!". I couldn't believe it. She was rushing to meet someone so we were only able to chat for a minute. But she gave me a big hug and went on her way.

I've been closely monitoring her career ever since.

by Anonymousreply 45August 30, 2018 8:55 PM

Really cool story, thank you R45.

by Anonymousreply 46August 30, 2018 8:58 PM

I loved her on Raising Hope too.

by Anonymousreply 47August 30, 2018 10:07 PM

I really liked her on The Good Wife.

by Anonymousreply 48November 8, 2018 3:43 AM

I loved her in Running on Empty. She had such great chemistry with River Phoenix.

by Anonymousreply 49November 8, 2018 3:51 AM

Hated her when she first arrived on the scene. 13 year old model with show biz family? Excuse me while I roll my eyes. Tolerated her during her River years. Came to appreciate her around the time of Parenthood.

Finally I fell in love with her. Fantastic. One of my favorite moments was when she met Triumph the Insult Comic Dog at a red carpet event. Bedecked in her beautiful green beaded gown, she decided to introduce herself to him by turning around and bending over.

Love her.

by Anonymousreply 50November 8, 2018 4:32 AM

I watched her in Shy People (1987) a couple of weeks ago: she and other good actors stuck with a wretched script. Skip this turkey.

I just passed her on the street here in London the other night. Apparently she is great friends with Patti LuPone -- who knew?

by Anonymousreply 52November 8, 2018 9:56 AM

ewww

her odious presence spoils every thing she is in.

creepy

by Anonymousreply 53November 8, 2018 10:12 AM

She should play Lucas Hedges’ mom

by Anonymousreply 54November 8, 2018 10:39 AM

I’m with r50. I only started being a fan of hers in the past 10 years. Loved her sarcastic delivery in Raising Hope and The Good Wife.

by Anonymousreply 55November 8, 2018 12:32 PM

I like her. Not enough to have watched her in a half-hour show, but I enjoyed her Good Wife character. And all of her various L&O appearances.

by Anonymousreply 56November 8, 2018 12:42 PM

She stole that Pal Joey revival from Stockard Channing.

by Anonymousreply 57November 8, 2018 12:48 PM

Watch two 30 minute episodes back-to-back, r56.

by Anonymousreply 58November 8, 2018 9:22 PM

Raising Hope was hysterically funny. You know that had some good gays writing for that show. Martha nailed every line.

by Anonymousreply 59November 8, 2018 10:45 PM

She was amazing in Pal Joey, I have such fond memories of seeing her in it.

by Anonymousreply 60November 8, 2018 10:55 PM

OP, are you the same proto-aspergian defective that’s been femming it up with your cartoons and record covers? People are so sick of you

by Anonymousreply 61November 8, 2018 11:06 PM

R61, I have no idea what you’re babbling about.
