This might sound odd, but David from Alvin & the Chipmunks in the 80s was probably the first character on TV I remember finding attractive (although I didn't know why). Seeing it later, he really is depicted as very good looking and also, quite possibly, gay.

On the 70's Planet of the Apes animated series a primitive human tribe finds the two male astronaut characters n the desert and nurses them back to health. At about 15:21 the two astronauts are shown waking up together, apparently nude, under some animal furs. I was about 12 when this aired and it was my first time seeing two shirtless men in bed together. I was fascinated but didn't quite understand why...

I agree R113, the NBC Apes cartoon had storylines that were more suited for a nighttime show. It was also serialized but for some reason NBC would often show the episodes out of order during its run. I liked it but it did have a deliberate pace that might have turned some kids off. Loved the episode where the apes had found the WWII fighter and were using it to hunt humans...

I had a thing for Archie. I think Archie comics kind of screwed me up for the world that was to come, because to this day, I am waiting for an average, orangeheaded, big-hearted goofball to sweep me off my feet. The CWās reinvention of him is everything I dislike: sexed up, jocky, steroidal, creatinized vapid meathead whose life is looking good in Instagram pictures. Blah.

by Anonymous | reply 155 | August 31, 2018 9:06 AM |
It's because Archie and Fred are the exceptions rather than the rule, R153. The built guy dominates when it comes to wish fulfillment for little boys, both in comic books and in cartoons and animation. And boys, fortunately or unfortunately, are the primary audience for this media. Boys want to grow up to be big strong men who take charge. Being kind, decent, and cute really isn't a thing for them. It really isn't too much of a thing for girls or women either, despite protestations to the contrary. It may be changing, as more comic books and animations are mainstreamed for adults, but we still take these perceptions with us as we age. I say this as one of your "average, orangeheaded, big-hearted goofballs". Believe me, takers are few...
by Anonymous | reply 156 | August 31, 2018 9:16 AM |
R156 Interestingly, my (straight) sister loved He-Man, Thundercats and professional wrestling when we were growing up in the 80s. I loved dangerous diplomat Smurfette (created as a trap and a bomb originally) and She-Ra. I always wondered what I liked so much about She-Ra as a kid, and a few years ago I looked her up online and it made sense to me. Itās not because she was glamorous or pretty. While He-Man wielded a sword and fought evil (zzzz), She-Ra brought peace, prevented conflicts and she was a champion for animals and the environment. Archie to me was a good-natured guy who tried really hard to be good even though he bumbled and failed a lot. I loved Bettyās and Veronicaās friendship. In retrospect, I identified more with female characters but it was always about who they wereāalways much more complex than the male ones, who just looked like weight lifters and used weapons. If thatās all life is, then men really donāt need to live more than 20 to 25 years. How boring.
by Anonymous | reply 157 | August 31, 2018 9:25 AM |
From anime, Sasuke and Itachi Uchiha, Yato, Ichigo Kurosaki, Byakuya Kuchiku. Samurai Jack - can't even explain that one. Peter Parker. Dick Grayson.
by Anonymous | reply 158 | August 31, 2018 9:31 AM |
I hear you R157. I have a friend who loves the Filmation live-action adaptation of Captain Marvel that ran several seasons on saturday morning. i thought it was a bloodless version of the comic (with none of Billy Batson's sweetness). I much prefer its literal sister series, Isis, starring Joanna Cameron. She was certainly beautiful but she was also portrayed as a wise, strong, and empathetic peacemaker. Not to knock the guys that played Captain Marvel, but I think Isis was allowed to have more depth precisely because she was a woman.
There's certainly more to men's lives beyond their 20's, but unfortunately our society doesn't prep them well for when they enter those years beyond, and devalues those who are able to navigate those years wisely and with dignity.
by Anonymous | reply 160 | August 31, 2018 9:40 AM |

The Artful Dodger (the one on the left) from āOliver and the Artful Dodger,ā a two-part episode of ABCās Saturday Superstar Movie.
It aired in 1972, when I was 5. For years I could not understand why that particular cartoon made such an impression on me. Then they invented the Internet, and voila! I suddenly remembered...
The Saturday Superstar Movie consisted of weekly cartoons based on live action TV shows and films (The Brady Kids, That Girl, Tabitha, Gilligans Island, Oliver!, etc.) The early 70s was an odd period in childrenās programming.

Top of the list - Sterling Archer! So many personal favorites already mentioned, but one I haven't seen, especially if we're including video games - Gray Edwards from Final Fantasy.

Wow I'm happy there are so many fellow Archer fans. I'm surprised he doesn't have more of a reputation as a gay idol.
Nightwing, the comic character, has a large gay fandom. He's usually drawn with a huge ass and they usually draw him doing sexy things. There's a recent issue where some villainous guy is licking his body lol

Xander Crews from Frisky Dingo (created by Matt Reed who makes Archer).

Loved Samson! Also really dug Commander Jonathan Kidd (with the eyepatch) from the Fantastic Voyage cartoon.

Yeah, it doesn't matter that there was a girl (and a horse). They were hot and they were into each other, and everyone knows it...

Always had a thing for Leon from Bubblegum Crisis, Kenichi Sonada knew had to draw hot guys. And yes, I believe there was *something* going on between him and Daily Wong besides co-habitation...

OMFG, Iāve heard of losers that whack off to cartoons, but assumed they were fat with acne and a breaking voice.

Zagato from "Magic Knight Rayearth". I had a major crush on him (I confess I questioned my sanity: he was an anime character for crying out loud!)! One can say I have a thing for Dark Lords!
P.S.: His brother, Lantis, however didn't work for me...

If this was a real life guy, I would have crushed on him... in high school.
Tony Rydinger - the Incredibles 2 version. The character looked different in the first movie.
