Why did Melanie Griffith’s career go straight down the shitter?

Didn't she get a new face?

She forgot she was a funny bombshell, not a great dramatic actress. And then lost her looks.

She was never that great of an actress

1. Because she can't act. Take another look at her greatest achievement, 'Working Girl'. She slept-walk through that entire movie.

2. She can't act and has an annoying voice.

3. She can't act and did not know when to say "Okay, stop." to the lip-filler guy.

Her clinginess to Antonio didn’t help matters much either!

I never like "Working Girl," but remember when she made a big splash in "Body Double." Stole the movie, and then I also liked Something Wild. She was good at funny/sexy, nothing else.

I looked at her imdb entry. Seems to me you would definitely have to call her a working actor..

I'm speculating but I bet there are a hell of a lot of actors who wish they had her career.

The real question is how did she get as far as she did. And of course after all her surgeries, like Meg Ryan, not much was going to happen. I think Rene Z may have done the same thing. She was on her way to a very solid career as a character actress after a few starring roles.

Something Wild was awesome, so was Working Girl. I can't remember anything else she did!

When Antonio Bendares was on Broadway doing NINE. Melanie then decided to take the role of Velma or Roxy in CHICAGO. She couldn't act sing or dance, but everyone loved her. She was a hit! Go figure. Also a friend of mine worked at JEAN GEORGE, the trendy restaurant in Trump Tower at Central Park south. Melanie and Antonia were staying in a condo in that building. It seems Melanie was famous for getting very high or drunk, and calling restaurant for food delivery. They sat she was a very nice MESS.

Combination of reasons why her career when down the shit hole. Quality of roles/films declined - she had a great 1980's - Fear Cirt, Body Double, Cherry 2000, Something Wild, Working Girl, Stormy Monday. She started doing all those solemn noble dramas, she aged, she's limited - really needs a good script and good director to get her through and she had neither of those in the 1990s.

Once she hit the plastic surgery that was it. Can't stand her fucking annoying daughter Dakota who has even less range.

Somebody should throw some work her way.

She’s in the latest InStyle and she must have major “unsurgery” because she looks normal again.

Maybe it’s photoshopped (and I don’t think just filters for wrinkles, etc.) but her facial proportions look 1/2 NORMAL again. I was used to her looking like a freak. I’ll see if I can rustle up some pics.

Okay wow, looks nothing like her old self. Still lots a lot better than I thought it would, though I imagine it looks significantly worse in a normal setting instead of professional photos.

She's led the life of a Hollywood wild child. She was fucking Don Johnson at the tender age of 14. She was a hard core druggie/alcoholic. She has three children by three different guys. The only roles she could ever play convincingly were those of a wee voiced blonde sexpot. Obviously she can't do that anymore. I don't think her life has been particularly "interesting." She seems to have lived the life of a typical Hollywood brat; drinking and drugging and screwing around. Nothing "interesting" about that. She's also a plastic surgery junkie. Her original face is now totally gone. She seems plenty fucked up, and no doubt always was.

She did have a bubbly, spacey persona that didn't age well. It's too bad she never gave the kind of focused performance she gave in BODY DOUBLE again. She was very good in that.

I actually always loved her in Cherry 2000.

It always amazes me that people say Brian De Palma is strictly a visual director, because he got some amazing performances out of people that they never topped. Nancy Allen was charming in all of his films, but she's not terribly good elsewhere. Same with Melanie. She's brilliant, sexy, and funny in Body Double and borderline mentally challenged in just about everything else I've seen her in. Look at his version of Carrie. It's been filmed twice since and, despite having some great actors in the films, they couldn't make it memorable like De Palma did. The man has a gift.
