Hercule Poirot versus Miss Marple

Poirot

Sherlock was smarter than them both

Sherlock is intolerable and dull

Miss Marple's more fun.

Although there were A LOT more Poriot novels/stories, I really like Miss Marple. "A murder is announced" is my fave. Agatha inserted herself (roman a clef) in many books, her opinions of natives, how her fans act towards her, etc. She writes a good horror story as well, read "The dressmakers doll".

'A Murder Is Announced' is one of my favourite Christie stories too, R6. Just perfect plotting, motivation, and ultimately very moving, as all the best Christies are. Gotta love Miss Marple solving the Lottie/Lettie deception by picking up on a discrepancy of spelling! (Making inquiries/enquiries).
That said, even though I prefer Marple as a character, I think I'd give the edge to Poirot as a detective. He had some truly fiendish mysteries to work through - ABC murders, Three Act Tragedy, Curtain.

I used to prefer Poirot but as I've gotten older and more frau I like Miss Marple more now.

poiret was miscast....tho he awfully good
most miss marples were too, specially that last old bird who sounded like a mouse...
they should redo both with fab eccentric fun characters, miss marple was so boring and vanilla in the last years...
poiret did have awesome ! sets and costumes, his queeny cornball antics were , however, boring in the end.

Prefer Poirot, though there are very good Marples, especially A Murder is Announced. There are better Poirot stories as she wrote more novels with him on it, especially during her better years. Marple stories were later in her career, including her declining years, though I still like all of them except the dismal They Do It With Mirrors.

Sherlock beats them all and is much more interesting.

Poirot. No question.
Oh. One more thing....
Lt. Columbo

As characters I can't stand either of them. A murder, or murders, took place and they make it all about them and their superior intellect. It's almost like the murders and victims don't matter and they are just plot devices, a means to an end to show off.

Here OP, drink some wine for your efforts. I am not mad at all that you didn't mention me.

Who, apart from Poirot, could have deduced the murderer of Roger Ackroyd?
Case closed.

I wonder if anyone still reads Agatha Christie. If so, how old are you? I don't believe I've read one since my teens. Devoured them, rather.

My favorite scene was the final showdown between Miss Marple and Clothilde in "Nemesis".

Sherlock > Poirot> Marple > Encyclopedia Brown > Nancy Drew > Fletcher > Hardy Boys
by Anonymous | reply 23 | September 14, 2018 3:15 AM |
Yea the hardy boys were dumb as rocks but you really think Encyclopedia edges out Nancy Drew?

R20 thinks that her scatterbrain defines lucid reading.
Based on her premise , how old must people be who read Shakespeare???? God, how old are people who stupidly read Aristotle? NO ONE DO DAT NO MO!
by Anonymous | reply 25 | September 14, 2018 2:16 PM |
LMAO not R20 but Im pretty sure he was just wondering if those books still appeal to young people since he was young when he read them

Who remembers The Rover Boys?

R20 et al, Agatha Christie is never out of print and still has big sales. The constant adaptations help and are also a sign of her continued popularity. I am not sure of the demographics but it should include young people as well, otherwise the sales would be declining significantly...

I'm a little old lady myself, so I prefer Miss Marple.

Love them both. The Marple adaptations are, generally speaking, simpler to follow. I don't like a lot of the changes made in recent times. Especially to Poirot when they were generally quite faithful to the originals in the earlier seasons..
