Compare and contrast. Please show your work. Yes Beverly did her own singing so she gets a little bit of a head start.
Jessica Lange as Patsy Cline vs. Beverly D'Angelo as Patsy Cline

Beverly was great. Jessica was terrible. What more needs to be said?
by Anonymous | reply 1 | August 14, 2018 9:35 AM |
Team Beverly.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | August 14, 2018 9:49 AM |
Why didn't they use her in Sweet Dreams?
by Anonymous | reply 3 | August 14, 2018 11:59 AM |
Beverly only got a few minutes of screen time. Jessica carried the entire film. Team Jessica.

#Beverly
Lange was awful.

Jessica was great.

"Jessica Lange was absolutely wonderful. I'd like to think that I could've played the part as well, but I don't think I could've played it better." -- Beverly D'Angelo, 1992
Both were great, but one was a supporting part with limited screen time, the other was lead role in practically every scene.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | August 14, 2018 12:42 PM |
Team Beverly.
Jessica was like Faye Dunaway in Mommie Dearest: only one level. She was ass-kicking, tough as nails Patsy. I didn't see a complete picture of the woman, just a caricature.
I think Beverly would have acted the role better and brought different levels and shades to Patsy.
Oh, and that ending was sensationalized. Their plane didn't fly into the side of a mountain. The engine quit and they crashed.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | August 14, 2018 1:01 PM |
I loved em both. Neither did an impersonation and both expertly served the scripts and version they were doing. Beverly was mentor and hero to Sissy and Jessica carried her film with pathos and humor.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | August 14, 2018 1:40 PM |
Beverly, I mean she looked like Patsy Cline, she had the warm, engaging persona. Lange was too sharp, too skinny, too gawky, too frizzy haired. That's how it struck me at the time. I haven't seen either movie in years.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | August 14, 2018 1:52 PM |
Phillip Seymour Hoffman as Patsy Cline? If you’d put him in drag he would have looked like her, and he definitely had the acting chops to pull off the role.

Beverly was excellent. She had very little time to establish a real person and she nailed it. If Jessica could have sung her part like Sissy I would have liked her performance more. But I also felt she was one note.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | August 14, 2018 4:27 PM |
Beverly, she is earthier and physically more like Patsy.

So polite. Why does Jess never return compliments?
Anyway, yes, D'Angelo is better.

Without Coal Miner's Daughter, there never would have been a Sweet Dreams. Nobody was busting down the doors in Hollywood to do a biopic about Patsy Cline. And the only reason CMD got made was because it was a book first.

That is true. Patsy was a "sturdy" girl. Jessica looks like a strong wind would blow her away.
One fun thing about June Carter Cash's autobio. A bunch of the country music stars were sent on a road tour. One day Patsy handed a little pill to June. June said that it kept her awake for two days straight. I guess she didn't know what speed was at the time.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | August 14, 2018 8:18 PM |
Exactly, r22. Patsy was a “sturdy girl” and Phillip Seymour Hoffman was a hefty guy who’d bring the required weight to the role.

Another for #TeamBeverly
by Anonymous | reply 24 | August 14, 2018 9:05 PM |
There was a coarseness to Beverly's performance that I think was closer to the real Patsy, but they were both good and served a different purpose. I don't think a movie with Beverly in the lead would have affected as large an audience, because Lange played her more as a beautiful spitfire, which more people could relate to.

[quote]Lange played her more as a beautiful spitfire
I don't think that was actually how she was. Lange's is definitely more... Hollywood. But not in a good way.

Jessica got to hook up with Ed Harris. She wins.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | August 14, 2018 9:32 PM |
Lange was SO miscast as Patsy Cline. Totally unconvincing as the earthy, big-boned country music legend. Lange looked and sounded ridiculous. Patsy Cline with a whispery voice? And that bad wig she wore was atrocious. Beverly D'Angelo was much more believable. And she did her own singing. All Lange could do was lip-synch to Cline's records. THAT voice coming out of HER mouth was hilarious.

Patsy appealed to butch lesbians. Jessica played her like she appealed to lipstick lesbians.

R30, I was just thinking that kd Lang would have made a great Patsy, but lang would probably not feel comfortable in a wig and 1950-60s women’s western wear.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | August 14, 2018 10:06 PM |
KD Lang has always looked like a man. Patsy Cline never looked like a man. She was ALL woman.

It's true. Other than Elvis, how many country music biopics were there before Coal Miner's Daughter?
by Anonymous | reply 39 | August 15, 2018 12:46 AM |
My God they worked those singers. Just think of how many performances they had to give- at fairs, rodeos, honky tonks- driving on the road all the time- trying to keep up your energy. These modern country stars have no idea how their country music ancestors put up with a lot more bullshit and a lot less glamour than they do. And they could sing!

Minnie Pearl said that at state fairs, they would shove her out on stage in the pouring rain and tell her not to touch the microphone.

I would have done my own singing, been big boned, and been nominated.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | August 15, 2018 2:50 AM |
Beverly sang Patsy beautifully. Jessica couldn't do it at all.
That alone should decide this question that never needed to be raised in the first place.

I wonder why Beverly never did Broadway. She's a great singer. (well she did do Broadway once in the start of her career.)
I could see her having been great as a replacement in Sunset Blvd.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | August 15, 2018 3:18 AM |
R21: I never understood why they went with Sissy Spacek. In my honest opinion Tammy Cruise would have been perfect in the role of Loretta Lynn. I’d have loved to have seen Tammy on the big screen dressed in drag while belting out “Coal Miner’s Daughter”.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | August 15, 2018 1:24 PM |
R44, give the woman something better than being a replacement in that dreary piece of shit.

Beverly D'Angelo is an underrated actress. She should've had a better career.

I thought so too. I think she was wasted in the Vacation movies, but a girl's gotta eat.
She played Stella in the Ann Margaret "A Streetcar Named Desire" and I wish they had thought of her when casting the Blythe Danner Broadway version a few years later. But I would have liked to see her do more stage work.

I remember a story Circulating years ago that Beverly D’Angelo referred to her newborn twins as her little SFOs.

by Anonymous | reply 55 | August 17, 2018 8:03 PM |
Lange, of course. Beverly was cute but couldn't even cry on cue. As for her singing... even I wouldn't have attempted trying to do Patsy. I would've lip-synced, too.
Lange was truly DIVINE. Watch me say so below.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | September 14, 2018 6:26 AM |
She is underrated but I wouldn’t say she’s wasted in the Vacation movies at all - she lends a sardonic quality that just any generic actress wouldn’t have.
The kids were replaceable but she wasn’t.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | September 14, 2018 8:06 AM |
I didn't know that Jessica Lange was in the Vacation movies. She was lowkey good. She didn't do very many comedies - was she sleeping with Chevy Chase at the time?
by Anonymous | reply 58 | September 14, 2018 9:19 AM |
Jessica. I like Beverly a lot, but she isn't in the same league as Jessica. Jessica WAS Patsy Kline, and I thought the lip syncing was well done. I'd much rather hear Patsy sing in her own bio pic than some actress. Jessica even has a slight resemblance to Patsy. I've probably watched Sweet Dreams a dozen times over the years.
