Freaks and Geeks
Any fans of the show? I had forgotten all about it, and then came across an episode on Youtube while looking for something else, "Kim Kelly is My Friend". It was the "lost" episode NBC refused to air because the executives thought it was too disturbing or it had too much adult content or something like that. I realized I had never seen it.
Of course it' kind of dated by today's standards, but it was really quite good!

I liked it. It’s funny that Seth Rogen became a bigger star than the girls, who were very good in this.

The geeks were my favourites. Bill Haverchuck is an icon.

Here's several-years-later a reunion pic of the geeks. . .

It had been long rumored that James Franco and Busy Phillips hated each other despite their characters being paired on the show, and the scene in some episode where Franco shoves her was far harsher than scripted and done deliberately.
Anyone have any dish?

Absolutely wonderful series. I was one of the few people who watched it when it originally aired, on Saturday nights no less! May have been just as well it only lasted a year because it's perfect as it is and never had the chance to go downhill. Such a good hearted show, but laugh out loud funny and poignant when it needed to be. I remember reading somewhere that some Hollywood insiders said they appreciated the show but it was too painful to watch because it reminded them too much of their own adolescence!

Terrific show, I remember it as funny and touching. I have the series on DVD, though I haven’t seen it in a while and wonder how it holds up. The “Kim Kelly is My Friend” episode is an extra on the DVD set and is very dark.

Brilliant show. Linda Cardellini never got the credit she deserved -- it was an amazing performance. We had a number of Kim Kellys at my high school.
And that's DL fave Ann "Aunt Lydia" Dowd as Kim Kelly's horrifying mother.

Joe Flaherty was brilliant.

I watched the entire series on DVD and did not realize the Kim episode was never broadcast. It’s been a while but I don’t remember thinking at the time that it was particularly different from the other episodes in terms of tone.
The one that does stand out to me - as being an inferior episode- was the one written by Seth Rogan. His character is troubled to learn his girlfriend was born with male genitalia. WTF?

A&E has a retrospective documentary on the show:

R7 OMG - THAT'S who that was. Thanks, R7.
Btw. I agree that Cardellini was brilliant but I disagree about getting the credit. She's had a pretty decent career that spring-boarded from Freaks. I started watching ER again when she came on, (amazing how she aged 15 years in only two - she went from a junior in high school to being the mom of a 10 yr old).

The beautiful Ann Perkins was such a cunt in her guest appearance on this show. But still beautiful!

Love this show, love this episode! "Undeclared" is good too though not as good. It does have whatshisname, the Brit who plays Jax on SOA.

Jason Segal, as the unhinged romantic loser, stole both shows: Freaks and Geeks and Undeclared.

r14 I thought of Undeclared the other day when "How Bizarre" came on my playlist. That was a great episode.

OMG - that was Rashida Jones. I had no idea she was one of the kids. I thought The Office was the first time I had ever seen her.

John Francis Daley, who played little Sam Weir, turned into quite a hottie.
I seriously doubt whether he could've continued to play a convincing geek on the show after puberty hit.
Best the show ended when it did before his growth spurt.

I really love Martin Starr, he's great in "Adventureland" and "Party Down".

Wasn't Cardelini black listed because she broke up with Segal? And they made Forgetting Sarah Marshall about it? Segal looks like a old drug addict.

Linda Cardellini was amazing in this show, as was the girl who played Cindy (Natasha Melnick). James Franco was the weak link IMO. One of the geeks was a really incredible actor - Samm Levine.
I loved nearly every single episode of this show, very accurate portrayal of HS or at least how it was for me in the 1990s.

Speaking of which, BLOODLINE looks fucking amazing.

Bloodline is great it's first season, so-so in the second, don't even bother with the third. The actors are all excellent, though, and each are given shining moments.

R20 Segal was with Cardellini for 5 years. It ended amicably. He speaks well of her and swears Marshall was written about somebody else.

That is the thing R23, I was blown away by the cast (saw some sort of trailer for the final episode). Will probably check S1, thanks for the recommendations.

I watched it when it first aired, and then on DVD when that came out. I've been rewatching it recently after I saw the A & E thing. It really is something special.

I always thought that John Francis Daly looked like a young Mick Jagger, and as an adult, he really does.

Great performances! Martin Starr is a real artist. Seth Rogan was figuring out acting. Some of his deliveries were in this affectless affect, but then he got better.

The first episode which ends with Lindsay asking the mentally disabled Eli to dance with her is one of my all time favorite moments in television.

R17, thank you. Love that shot of Daley, who really did grow into quite a hottie. Always nice to see others who appreciate John Francis Daley.

John Francis Daley definitely grew up to be a hottie. He's got luscious lips as well.
The show is wonderful. I've only seen it once yeeeears ago, back when Netflix was mailing discs. All my memories of the show are fond, but we're not alone in that sense. This is one of the most beloved television shows.

I love Freaks and Geeks. There aren't many dramas or comedies with teens just being teens anymore. Everyting is Highschool musical/Glee'd up now (camp). I noticed this when I watched my teen niece for a couple days. All of her shows were so overwrought. It might been a gen-x thing where the gold standard is The Wonder Years.

Stephen Lea Sheppard is as big of a nerd in real life as he played on the show. He has a Twitter account where he just talks about RPGs.

So many great little characters in this show. Neal Schweiber was a perfect geek, as was poor Millie. People who didn’t watch the show seem to think Franco was the breakout star but his character was never that interesting.
Might have to pull out the dvds on this one. Haven’t watched it in years

Same.
Haverchuck is my favorite character.
I had a good chuckle watching the whole class recite Bill’s prank call:
[quote][italic]Fredericks. You're a turd. A stinky fat turd. Go sniff a jock strap, you poop head. You love patting boys' butts. You love patting boys' butts. Butt... you butt-patter! You're a perv and a loser... and a stinky... turd![/italic]
Alan the bully is an underrated character & earns extra points from me because the actor also played Squints Palledorous in [italic]The Sandlot[/italic]
Neil & Ken are my least favorite characters.

Nick’s disco performance intercut with the geeks playing D&D with James Franco in the final episode makes me incredibly happy😊.

The episode that showed Bill's after-school routine all alone broke my heart in two. Barely anything in the fridge, mom at work every day...
