Good examples of people winning an Oscar without mounting a large scale campaign

Another thread got me think how bullshit The Oscars can be with gross, in-your-face campaigns and sucking up.

Any winners spring to mind who won by merit instead of campaign?

by Anonymousreply 38August 8, 2018 9:57 PM

Mo'Nique for PRECIOUS.

by Anonymousreply 1August 7, 2018 2:55 PM

Didn't that Italian goofball's win for La vita è bella come out of nowhere?

by Anonymousreply 2August 7, 2018 2:59 PM

Roberto Begnini was at every single Oscar pre-party working the circuit like a house clown. He also had Weinstein behind a huge "Life is Beautiful" campaign. His win certainly does not belong in this thread.

by Anonymousreply 3August 7, 2018 3:07 PM

I can't imagine K Hepburn did the party circuit shaking hands until her hand fell off.

by Anonymousreply 4August 7, 2018 3:22 PM

Glenda Jackson didn't campaign for either of her Oscars, the first of which was well deserved. She also didn't show up to accept either time.

Not sure if Maggie Smith campaigned for her JEAN BRODIE Oscar (I'm inclined to doubt it).

by Anonymousreply 5August 7, 2018 3:23 PM

Kate Hepburn NEVER even attended the ceremony to pick up each of her FOUR statues. She didn't attend, period. I think that the only time she ever attended was to present a lifetime achievement award to George Cukor, memory serving. Kate didn't play that silly Hollywood shit.

Katina Paxinou.

by Anonymousreply 7August 7, 2018 3:49 PM

Frances McDonald didn't campaign for either of her wins. Neither did Robert De Niro or Sissy Spacek for Raging Bill & Coal Miner's Daughter's respectively.Actually Sissy Spacek is another actress that doesn't campaign. Albert Finney is an actor who never campaigns.

R8, old McDonald has a farm. Frances McDormand, however, has two Oscars.

As for Sissy Spacek you may be right but I do recall it was a very tight race between her and Mary Tyler Moore right up until the end. I imagine she was pressured somewhat by the studio to get out there and promote her nomination.

by Anonymousreply 13August 7, 2018 3:59 PM

Frances McDormand didn't campaign for her second Oscar per se. But she was a huge supporter of her film and the supporting performances of Harrelson and Rockwell and she definitely touted them all over the place in the 1,000 lead up awards ceremonies to the Oscars.

She seemed more excited at the opportunity to give a speech rather than win the Oscar last year (she put the actual gong on the floor immediately when she got up there to accept it - could you imagine AnnE letting it out of her hands?) I really don't see FM giving a shit about awards.

Hepburn’s only oscar appearance was presenting the Irving g thalberg award to a film producer named Lawrence weingarten.

Maggie smiths movie came and went early in the year. The category that year wasn’t that strong. Spacek actually did campaign a bit for coal miners daughter morseso for the movie and Loretta Lynn.

by Anonymousreply 17August 7, 2018 4:26 PM

Finances McDorman and other actors/actresses of her category should never have to grovel for an award. It’s embarrassing. Good for her for not stooping that low.

by Anonymousreply 18August 7, 2018 4:29 PM

Sam Rockwell didn't seem to this year.

by Anonymousreply 19August 7, 2018 4:42 PM

Brie larson for room.

Anything and everyone that won prior to the late-1970s. Lindsay Ellis did a good video on Oscar bait and how it's a recent phenomenon.

Did Glenn ever campaign for any of her nominations? Or campaign for a nomination that failed to happen?

by Anonymousreply 23August 7, 2018 5:49 PM

Wasn't there a talk of a "Cookie's Fortune" nomination for G that never materialized?

by Anonymousreply 24August 7, 2018 6:12 PM

1999 was a year when lots of good performances missed out on a nom. Reese Witherspoon (in one of her few excellent performances), Siggy in Map of the World, Michelle Pheiffer in The Deep End of the Ocean

Kathy Bates for Misery. I don't think she expected to win at all.

by Anonymousreply 26August 7, 2018 6:25 PM

Kathy was thirsty for that second win for About Schmidt in 2003. She almost took Catherine Zeta Jones out with a well aimed heel.

R5 Actually, Maggie Smith did campaign. After she was nominated for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, she flew from London to LA to make appearances around Hollywood, including guesting on the Carol Burnett Show and attending rounds of parties. Hollywood voters, who really didn't know who she was at the time, were flattered by her attention. Her win for Brodie was a bit of an upset, although it was well-deserved. She missed the Oscar ceremony because she was doing a play.

Jane Fonda really should have won the year that Maggie Smith did, as much as I love the latter.

by Anonymousreply 31August 8, 2018 7:51 PM

Maggie Smith was nominated for an oscar three years before r29, I doubt voters didn’t know who she was.

[quote]Sam Rockwell didn't seem to this year.

Yeah, no. He campaigned.

Christian Bale is known not to campaign, though I can’t remember if he did so for The Fighter or not. Daniel Day Lewis doesn’t either.

Didn't they also have a couple of Best Picture awards? Like Best Serious Film and Best Popular Claptrap?
