'I'm Latina, and I Find Rihanna's Skinny Brows Problematic'

[quote]I got my eyebrows threaded for the first time when I was 12 years old. As I walked out of the salon, admiring my new skinny brows, my mother stared at me: “They gave you chola brows!” she gasped, horrified, before immediately making me swear to never thread them that thin again.

[quote]Because at the time, in the predominantly Mexican and Mexican-American city of Los Angeles, pencil-thin brows weren’t seen as a fashion statement—they were seen as a gang affiliation, marking you as a chola (a female gang member). Suddenly, I was the 6th grader with a hugely polarizing gang sign on her face, a sign I had been raised to fiercely avoid—and have avoided ever since.

[quote]Considering it was highly unlikely that Rihanna had suddenly joined a gang, and seeing as the Caribbean singer wasn’t exactly raised on the streets of East L.A., my Mexican-American heart was deeply confused, and deeply annoyed.

If by problematic you mean they make her look cheap, then yes.

She is far too beautiful for that sort of gimmick.

OP, this article is stupid and was completely unnecessary. No one is thinking about Cholas when they see thin eyebrows. Please watch the Vogue video to see Rihanna’s inspiration for the eyebrows seen on the cover.

r2 Of course it's a stupid article. That's exactly why I posted it here.

by Anonymousreply 3August 3, 2018 2:36 PM

Do these people have no sense of history at all? CHOLAS DID NOT INVENT THIN EYEBROWS. Please! Brows like this were on every woman in the 1920s and1930s. They also came back in the 70s (which, fashionwise, was greatly influenced by the 30s).

r4 She got emotional because of that childhood memory, which is understandable. The fault here lies with the MC editor who allowed this to be published.

by Anonymousreply 6August 3, 2018 2:42 PM

This sounds like a Russian attempt to divide POC, honestly.

by Anonymousreply 7August 3, 2018 2:43 PM

Remember what the Cholas did to Celia Hodes from "Weeds?" haha

r9 Our great chola ancestor!

by Anonymousreply 10August 3, 2018 2:51 PM

No, ninny. I do not find things "problematic."

by Anonymousreply 11August 3, 2018 2:52 PM

Love all the people trolling Rihanna by going with the Yes option. Fuck her!

by Anonymousreply 12August 3, 2018 2:57 PM

Oh is this like SJWs thinking that braids and dreadlocks and items are the exclusive property of one particular group?

And I thought chola brows were thick and applied with sharpie.

by Anonymousreply 13August 3, 2018 3:03 PM

No, Rihanna is not reading Data Lounge. The yes voters are trolling YOU r12, for giving a shit.

by Anonymousreply 14August 3, 2018 3:04 PM

r14 = Rihanna

by Anonymousreply 15August 3, 2018 3:04 PM

Chola brows are extremely unattractive on women.

by Anonymousreply 16August 3, 2018 3:07 PM

"for giving a shit"

Says the creator of the Elizabeth Hammer thread. Go find yourself some pills, sweetheart.

by Anonymousreply 17August 3, 2018 3:07 PM

r16 Must be a subconscious thing, like trying to convey that one's vagina is very tight?

by Anonymousreply 18August 3, 2018 3:09 PM

Oh, look. It's Today's Issue for the SJWs to get a Twitter trend going and scream about, while they could be concerned about and trying to fix real racial injustices. Shitting all over Rhianna and Vouge will really change the world, like for sure!

by Anonymousreply 19August 3, 2018 3:14 PM

MARY!

by Anonymousreply 20August 3, 2018 3:17 PM

I'm not a big fan of unnaturally thin or overly thick painted on brows. Super thin brows were popular in the nineties. I see girls with painted on Groucho Marx I brows now. Both look stupid, but you don't have to worry about your eyebrows never growing back with the thick brows. It's moronic that the writer thinks this belongs to Latinas.

by Anonymousreply 21August 3, 2018 3:39 PM

The eyebrows were triggering to her.

by Anonymousreply 22August 3, 2018 3:41 PM

This reminds me I need to. Go watch Mi Vida Loca.
