‘Love Island’ On The Verge Of U.S. Remake

[quote]Love Island, the smash hit British reality dating competition, is “on the verge” of cracking on into the United States and a number of other major markets – fresh from its latest finale scoring record-breaking ratings for ITV2.

[quote]Love Island brings together a group of sexy singletons – 38 chiseled contestants in the case of this year’s series – all looking to find love in a villa in Mallorca. However, unlike many dating shows such as The Bachelor or Temptation Island, there is a less formal structure to the format, with producers reacting to the shenanigans in the house to determine how to proceed.

[quote]The show has become a bonafide hit in its home market, mugging off the competition and coupling up with viewers every night for the past two months. It has already been picked up for another season and is now starting to roll out internationally, with remakes in Australia, Germany and across Scandinavia as well as a major deal for the UK series with Hulu in the U.S.

[quote]An overnight audience of 3.6M and a peak of 4.1M watched Dani Dyer, daughter of British action star Danny Dyer, and cheeky Essex stationery salesman Jack Fincham win the show on the youth-skewing network and clinch the £50,000 ($66,000) cash prize. This was up on the 2.6M (13%) that tuned in for last year’s final as well as the 2.9M (16%) that watched this year’s opener.

[quote]Beale says that by “breaking every rule” and “taking the piss out of our own reality TV dogma”, the show will continue to flourish. “There’s going to be more territories, we’re looking into 2019 now,” he says. He and his team are already looking at whether the Love Island formula could be applied to other non-scripted areas. “Could we pull it out of its genre? Could we do this with any genre? Could we create this dystopian reality show in every genre? I reckon we probably could.”

Could the British viewers explain this one to me? In what way does this show break reality TV rules?

Yay, a new crop of yacht girls !

by Anonymousreply 2July 31, 2018 10:21 PM

I’ve never watched it because it’s ITV shite but millennials like it. They were talking about it today at work.

I can’t imagine it’s much different from Ex On The Beach, just a bunch of young people getting drunk and copping off with each other. Nonsense.

by Anonymousreply 3July 31, 2018 10:41 PM

(R1) it doesn't. I concur with (R3) that this show is very popular with the younger demographics, given that it is skewered towards them. For the life of me, I cannot fathom the show's popularity as it follows the usual trajectory that other 'reality' shows follow: it has lots of good looking contestants desperate for fame and attention; lots of contrived 'drama', and a supposed 'fairytale romance'. I can only guess that our country is full of a lot of desperate romantics hoping to witness genuine love blossom for one or more of the couples in the show. That said, if the contestants play their cards right, they could end up with a nice little fortune after the completion of the show - one half of last year's winning couple went on to make just over a million pounds, thanks to lucrative endorsements/deals. I'm more curious about the upcoming UK Celebrity Big Brother which airs this Friday, with rumours of Megan Markle's half sister as well as Stormy Daniels potentially entering the show. That would make interesting viewing.

r4 Thanks. And yes, we're all incredibly excited for CBB here on DL as well.

Could they actually do this in the US? It seems like they can get away with a lot more trashy stuff in the UK for some reason.

by Anonymousreply 6July 31, 2018 11:52 PM

Calling the original a smash hit is slightly overstating things. The most recent series averaged around 3.5m viewers, which is great for the channel it's on (ITV2) but not really anything to write home about for the main channels.

by Anonymousreply 7July 31, 2018 11:54 PM

r7 that's what, like 1/4 of the population of the UK? That is a smash hit.

by Anonymousreply 8July 31, 2018 11:56 PM

5%, R8.

by Anonymousreply 9July 31, 2018 11:57 PM

I wonder what the percentage is in the coveted demo.

by Anonymousreply 10July 31, 2018 11:59 PM

Among its demographic, it was a smash hit. I bet a show would love to get 5% of the population in the US. Everyone talked about it.

I'm assuming the demo is 20-35-somethings.

Jack is cute and really good at impressions.

by Anonymousreply 12August 1, 2018 12:02 AM

Margot Robbie apparently loves this shit.

We already had something kind of like this called Temptation Island and it bombed.

by Anonymousreply 14August 1, 2018 12:35 AM

Temptation Island was just a rip off of other shows, with hotter people. I think it could work the way the UK does it, but they would need REALLY hot people. In fact, it'd be good if they could import them from the UK.

by Anonymousreply 15August 1, 2018 12:37 AM

Yeah, they need to get semi-intelligent contestants for this show. Those loud dumb jocks who go on Big Brother won't do at all.

by Anonymousreply 16August 1, 2018 12:42 AM

I watched every episode of this seasons Love Island and I’m definitely not their demo target. I never heard of the show until this season, but I completely got into the contestants and the drama. Everyone was drooling for Adam, however as gorgeous as he was he’s a complete fuckboi. I have the hots for Alex with the glasses...my kind of man.

r18 Is this the same Alex as in r13?

Tell us more about the show, please. What's the appeal?

by Anonymousreply 19August 1, 2018 1:14 AM

I see now they have different eye colours. God, I'm so bad with faces.

by Anonymousreply 20August 1, 2018 1:16 AM

(R5) you're welcome and (R19) no, they're two different Alex on the show. The Alex shown on (R13) is an actual medical doctor. All those years of medical school and training, only to end up on reality television! What a waste.

by Anonymousreply 21August 1, 2018 1:21 AM

Can smn give me the Cliff Notes about the hot male winner with the ridiculously bleached white teeth, Jack smthg?

He’s a “pen salesmen”? Like upscale fountain-pens or convenience store?

My only wish is that he didn’t have that annoying Essex accent... He’s hotter when he doesn’t talk.

by Anonymousreply 22August 1, 2018 1:22 AM

And why did he win? Was he interesting to watch?

by Anonymousreply 23August 1, 2018 1:23 AM

Jack Fincham.

Are those eyebrows painted on?

Jesus. More of that filth? Can’t World of Wonder just make The Bitchelor a legit sketch comedy/reality show? I’d watch the fuck out of that!

(R22) he's a stationary sales manager and he, along with his partner Dani, won this year because the British public fell in love with them. The show works as s follows: you have a bunch of contestants (this year 38) known as islanders living on a luxury island in Mallorca, Spain. To stay in the villa, and thus, the show, the contestants must couple up with other islanders. Those who remain single after coupling are eliminated from the show. The public can also eliminate the islanders via. Public vote. Throughout the series, which runs for two months, the couples are tested on every aspect of their relationships and as the show progresses, contestants keep coupling up. In the final episode, the public votes for which couple they wish to see win the prize of £50,000. This year's winning couple received 80% of the public votes.

I should also add that this show, as annoying as I find it, does in some respects, shine a bright light on some taboo issues which are too close to home for some. For instance, this year's contestants included a misogynist, another contestants despite being really nice, never got anywhere with the ladies, and thus, became a hero for many guys who are single and want to date women but can't and are angry with them, and the only black female contestant was pretty much sidelined by everyone, including the cameraman - she received less airtime than any other contestant. Surprisingly, this show has won a BAFTA and it constantly attracts the much coveted demographics of 18-34 years old.

I need to find a useful hobby (and also go to sleep, as it's very late over here in London).

by Anonymousreply 26August 1, 2018 2:16 AM

r24 Microblading?

Grim stuff. Reminds me of watching UnREAL and the shit that went down there.
