I love waterfalls. Not the big commercialized ones but the smaller ones that hardly anybody knows about. Especially ones you can swim under. It's where most of my travel money goes to. After 3 years my BF won't go with me anymore. I had to chose him or the waterfalls. I chose the waterfalls. I don't like luxury hotels, crowds, or tourist traps. Oh well.
His loss OP. I dig them too, beautiful and refreshing. There are some great ones up in the Adirondacks and Catskills.

But nothing beats Iguassu. Niagra included.

Don't go chasing waterfalls Please stick to the rivers and the lakes that you're used to.

Maine has a lot of them. They range from very gentle sloping ones to down right deadly ones.

Thank you OP. One of my favorites-- if you happen to be in Luang Prabang, Laos. There is a natural rock pool at the top. You can relax in the pool while looking down the length of the falls.

I love parks with water but falls are too noisy. Any falls with people swimming under and you'll be the unsuspecting victim in the background of instawhores.
Went to look at Cuyahoga falls in N. Ohio though.

another: Pamukkale in Turkey. It's like swimming in warm mineral water.

In all seriousness, I am jealous of waterfall-adjacent people.
We have none here in Southern California.

Trek up to Yosemite after the fires die down R11. I enjoyed an "illegal" shower under one there. It was dangerously powerful, but on the perimeter it was amazing. If anyone here attempts this, please only use Camp Suds or other biodegradable safe soap!

I knew someone from high school that slipped at a waterfall somewhere in Oz and died.

Because of its geology Arkansas is just filled with waterfalls everywhere. Some of the most unique ones in the world. Plus because it is such a large, rural state you be right in the middle of these falls and you'll be the only ones there. They may not be huge waterfalls but you will see such unique formations that you won't find anywhere else.

R14/R15 those look unreal. Turner Falls in OK is one of those hidden gems off the beaten path too.

Plitvice Lakes is tops on my list of what I have to see. For lack of a better way to explain it it is a series of lakes formed on something like a staircase. Each one flowing into the one beneath it. It was the world's first national park.

Hanging Lake near Glenwood Springs, Colorado is gorgeous, and includes a moderate hike up to reach it.

Niagara, though not as big as some, is the most beautiful and the most dramatic, IMHO

They're too cold, never liked being in all that shade and cool air while swimming. I understand why your boyfriend had enough I would have been over it after one trip let alone all the money going towards it.

What money? You get a tent and a backpack. Hike out to the falls. Set up your tent and enjoy the falls. The most you spend is the gas to get there and a night in a cheap hotel after you hike out. I hiked about 1/2 of the AT. It was filled with waterfalls too. Some of the best.

Couldn't agree more R34. Still one of the least expensive forms of recreation. Prices of admission to many National and State Parks have gone up, but if you have the gear, only the cost of food & fuel is to be factored. If you're just starting out, you can always rent camping equipment too.

Plitvice Lakes is also called land of the falling lakes. Waterfalls clean and clear up the water. Because the water at Plitvice goes through so many waterfalls by the time it gets to the bottom it is very clean and has a lot of the hard metals beaten out of it. This is what it looks like.
