Anita Bryant

As a young teen I remember being so disappointed hearing that the nice lady from the orange juice commercials turned out to be a raging homophobe. I'm wondering how she feels in these times. Is she still hating or does she love the gays?

Just keep this in a loop whenever you feel enraged by a homophobe. It's soothing.

Like all the scamgelicals, she’s probably making a comeback now and will have a new “non-profit” raising money to fight discrimination against conservative religious straight white women

by Anonymousreply 2July 23, 2018 4:24 AM

I married a lovely gal named Gus. Embraced flannel. We are very happy on our hemp farm outside Eureka. Thanks for asking.

by Anonymousreply 3July 23, 2018 4:25 AM

The part she cries is a masterpiece. hahahahaha Cunt, take that pie!

by Anonymousreply 4July 23, 2018 4:25 AM

She now lives in Edmond, Oklahoma, and says she does charity work for various youth organizations while heading Anita Bryant Ministries

by Anonymousreply 5July 23, 2018 4:25 AM

Probably still hates our guts when the synapses between random gray cells still do their jobs. Otherwise everything is blissful.

by Anonymousreply 6July 23, 2018 4:29 AM

Saw these three on her wiki page:

Bryant's likeness is portrayed by a drag performer in the comedic play, Anita Bryant's Playboy Interview, which premiered in 2016 in Silver Lake, Los Angeles.

Bryant is a frequently portrayed character at drag shows across the United States.

Bryant is the subject of the musical The Loneliest Girl in the World, book and lyrics by Gordon Leary and music by Julia Meinwald, which had its World Premiere run at Diversionary Theatre in San Diego May 24 - July 1, 2018

by Anonymousreply 7July 23, 2018 4:32 AM

I liked Anita Bryant when I was a kid growing up. Saw her on TV a lot. She seemed friendly, perky, and animated, almost like a brunette version of Doris Day.

I was horrified when she started the infamous anti-gay campaign and wondered what happened to the formerly nice lady.

Very sad case of a good girl gone bad.

by Anonymousreply 8July 23, 2018 4:32 AM

There's a script about her life floating around for some time now. For a while Uma Thurman was attached to star in it. Maybe it's time they finally make this movie.

by Anonymousreply 9July 23, 2018 4:34 AM

True story. I went to an evangelical Christian school in the late 70s/early 80s. In fourth grade, we had to do a report on, and oral presentation - dressed as - someone you admire. We had Einstein, Joe Namath (I went as Laura Ingalls Wilder) and a classmate did Anita Bryant!

I get Anita Bryant and Phyllis Schlafly confused.

She did Coca-Cola commercials before she became the orange juice spokesbot.

[quote]She did Coca-Cola commercials before she became the orange juice spokesbot.

Bitch.

by Anonymousreply 15July 23, 2018 4:41 AM

So full of hate. She really screwed up her life by attacking the gays. Lost her orange juice contract and got a divorce. Now I think she plays Branson and county fairs.

by Anonymousreply 16July 23, 2018 4:45 AM

In some respects, she did us a favor. She brought us together to fight her hate and those of the day.

by Anonymousreply 17July 23, 2018 4:48 AM

Branson, r16? Too bad she wasn't on the sunken duck boat.

by Anonymousreply 18July 23, 2018 5:11 AM

She looks like a tranny in that image at R12

by Anonymousreply 19July 23, 2018 5:15 AM

I was only a few years old when this happened. What's the back story on what got her so hyped up about us and to start a national campaign.

by Anonymousreply 20July 23, 2018 5:20 AM

that pie in the face was hilarious although a bit sad when she started crying, but she was a clown so it fit her well.

time for immediate prayer!

by Anonymousreply 21July 23, 2018 5:22 AM

r17 - I agree, she was galvanizing. But she wasn't ready for the shit storm she started and she was totally unprepared for the overwhelming negative reaction she received. She handled herself and poorly and both she and her husband looked foolish. I think her husband was the one behind the whole fiasco. He thought their anti-gay crusade would make them both heroes.

by Anonymousreply 22July 23, 2018 5:25 AM

The pie was too kind, someone should have slapped her silly!

by Anonymousreply 24July 23, 2018 5:29 AM

Her whole work life since has been of the Christo-Publican "Fleece the Flock" variety. Every venture she and her scammy husband touched has gone belly up, and she's old and broke, and will die that way!

I couldn't be happier!

by Anonymousreply 25July 23, 2018 5:33 AM

Oh - I forgot about that r24. She didn't do so well at Branson. But thankfully she was inept. If she had of been organized she could have caused so real problems for the gays. This was just before the AIDS epidemic and there was a lot of fear and loathing going around.

by Anonymousreply 26July 23, 2018 5:34 AM

[quote]I think her husband was the one behind the whole fiasco.

Then he got what he deserved. After the divorce he lived out the rest of his life as a lonely bitter fuck.

by Anonymousreply 28July 23, 2018 5:43 AM

by Anonymousreply 29July 23, 2018 5:45 AM

R22 Actually, Anita's husband was initially NOT in favor of her campaign. He thought it to be too controversial and possibly damage her career. He tried to talk her out of it.

There were rumors that her first husband had strong gay tendencies. Some gay men claim that they saw him in gay cruising areas. After they divorced, he lived alone and never got married again. Their son said that his life was kind of sad.

by Anonymousreply 30July 23, 2018 6:32 AM

Anita's (first) husband, Bob Green.

Their son stated that he sat her down after every musical performance and told her every mistake she had made in the show. It was like a form of resentment.

Anita herself admitted after their divorce that they had both been unfaithful to each other.

I can still remember sitting in the kitchen at home reading the local paper and seeing a story which said that the Florida orange juice commission had decided to not renew her endorsement contract due to the bad publicity she'd generated. It made my day.

by Anonymousreply 32July 23, 2018 2:49 PM

I was in Florida (Tampa area) at the time of the controversy and the threatened orange juice boycott. Bryant was also doing commercials for some local bank chain (I can't remember the name). You couldn't turn on any of the local television stations without seeing one of them. I don't know whether the banks dumped her as well. Just a bit of trivia. For a while there, though, she was probably raking in the bucks.

by Anonymousreply 33July 23, 2018 3:15 PM

Bryant and her 2nd husband moved around the country running scams and fleeing in the night leaving creditors and employees unpaid; for years until she ended up back in Oklahoma. She's common crooked trash.

----------------------------

Bryant married her second husband, Charlie Hobson Dry, in 1990. The couple tried to reestablish her music career in a series of small venues, including Branson, Missouri, and Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, where they opened Anita Bryant's Music Mansion. The establishment combined Bryant's performances of her successful songs from early in her career with a "lengthy segment in which she preached her Christian beliefs." The venture was not successful and the Music Mansion, which had missed meeting payrolls at times, filed for bankruptcy in 2001 with Bryant and Dry leaving behind a series of unpaid employees and creditors.

Bryant also spent part of the 1990s in Branson, Missouri, where the state and federal governments both filed liens claiming more than $116,000 in unpaid taxes. Bryant and Dry had also filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in Arkansas in 1997 after piling up bills from a failed Anita Bryant show in Eureka Springs, a tourist area in northwest Arkansas. Among the debts were more than $172,000 in unpaid state and federal taxes.

by Anonymousreply 47July 23, 2018 6:45 PM

From R46's post interview: "Robert Green Jr.: I guess that they were hateful. I remember in the heat of the controversy going into a shop with my mom… [a man] came over and shook her hand and said he backed what she was doing and basically said "I hate fags, too." She immediately set him straight about that, that she did not hate anyone. That wasn't the point for her about what she was trying to do."

Why does the religious rights always con itself into thinking they don't actually hate gays?

by Anonymousreply 48July 23, 2018 6:50 PM

by Anonymousreply 57July 23, 2018 9:54 PM

OK listen up young gaylings, that pie in the face may seem silly but look at all the good it did. I say embrace the pie and start pie holing your favorite public hater. The punishment if they catch you will last a day, their humiliation on film will last a lifetime.

by Anonymousreply 58July 23, 2018 9:54 PM

R56 She still kept in contact with Harvey Weinstein & Bill Cosby (probably her sweat shop people as well).

She LOVES evildoers.

I wonder if one of her kids were gay or if her daughter was violated by Harvey/Bill would she be so forgiving?

She's also a republican but does her best to avoid politics in the public arena.

KLG has been on the 700 Club plenty of times over the years with her "dear friend Pat" so of course she's still pals with Anita.

by Anonymousreply 71July 23, 2018 10:53 PM

The “fruit pie” comeback does suggest a sharp wit.

I am guessing that the movie, if it ever materializes, will play like a comedy, but I’d do approach the whole thing seriously, to get at her motivations and to really show how real and pervasive that attitude was - and in places still is.

I wonder who could play her not as a joke. Uma Thurman is totally wrong. They should settle on someone who has a very likeable presence, to bring out the discord in her politics and the disappointment in the people who’d admired her.

It would make a really great movie, but not as caricature like Allison Janney in I, Tonya.

It’s comedy from an easy angle, but it’s a multifaceted tragedy if they’re willing to take it on.

by Anonymousreply 72July 23, 2018 10:54 PM

The pie thrower must have died from AIDS. Did Anita say a prayer for him?

by Anonymousreply 73July 23, 2018 10:57 PM

Great interview at r46.

I even think that a limited series might be a great showcase for this story, focusing not only on her, but the gay and lesbian people affected by her movement, and how they elected to respond or not respond. It would be more Focused and personal than a big Stonewall movie or that network series that tanked.

We’ve undergone such a radical change in the past two decades that I think documenting life as it was is more important than ever.

by Anonymousreply 74July 23, 2018 11:10 PM

I will never forget Kathie Lee Gifford talking to a large audience of Christians. She got up on the stage and told them that if they truly loved God then they wouldn't hate homosexuals. by Anonymousreply 82July 24, 2018 1:00 AM

She loved fruit pies and was being unfunny and honest.

Back then fruits weren't a pseudonym for "the gays", which they called "homosexuals" because it sounds worse and makes people think of sex. Fruit has fiber and is tasty so she wouldn't have associated it with the gays, which in private she called "cuntbotherers" because her pussy hurt when she thought about it. She didn't realize her OBGYN was gay and secretly sprayed her nether areas with itching cream every time she visited, which was often because she had a problem with cucumbers getting stuck down there. Each time she claimed she was making a salad and slipped and fell, but Dr. Michael knew she was lying.

by Anonymousreply 83July 24, 2018 1:10 AM

by Anonymousreply 84July 24, 2018 1:10 AM

I'm surprised she's still alive. Haven't heard of her in years.

by Anonymousreply 85July 24, 2018 1:14 AM

Anita Bryant’s stained panty liners used to fall out at public events. They were always stained with feces and discharge. People thought she was Nanette Fabray and sold them to autograph stores. $10 extra for cunt hair on it.

by Anonymousreply 86July 24, 2018 1:15 AM

Her crusade backfired in New Orleans, which was home to many Southern gays and lesbians in the 1970s. The gay community there never had a "Stonewall" moment, but Bryant giving a concert just outside the French Quarter got people organizing fast. They even stopped serving orange juice in many gay bars in the city and had a rally and march that showed the power of the nascent gay movement.

According to this article, organizers expected a couple of hundred people. They got 10 times that many to protest Anita.

[quote]The success of the rally energized the LGBT community in New Orleans and also served as a harbinger of the shift in public attitudes toward homosexuality. Similar protests were held in other cities where Bryant performed, and as a result, the backlash caused the Florida Citrus Commission to drop her as its spokesperson.

by Anonymousreply 93July 24, 2018 2:02 AM

r92 -"security" was probably just a couple of rent-a-cops wandering around. From the posts above it doesn't even sound like the guy who threw the pie got arrested. I guess he just walked away and went to a bar to celebrate. Bravo !!!

by Anonymousreply 94July 24, 2018 2:13 AM

R93 - Because they would t have had him.

The public on the whole wasn’t comfortable with Anita Bryant’s crusade, but they weren’t comfortable with gay men either.

There was no welcoming couch on Ellen in 1978.

Closeted Merc Griffin, squeaky-clean Mike Douglas, and genial Johnny Carson wouldn’t have touched this.

Phil Donahue, yes. That’s it. Forty years ago was a different world.

by Anonymousreply 95July 24, 2018 2:18 AM

Sarah Huckabee Sanders was the substitute organist at her church. She also used to be the rehearsal pianist for the auditions for the Ladies Annual Bean and Salad Dinner. She would let drag queens audition as long as they didn’t sing “Stay With Me” or “Purlie”

by Anonymousreply 96July 24, 2018 2:46 AM

r93, the year this happened, we were still in the shadows. Unless you had a gay family member, most folks were clueless. I was femme from birth, but it was never discussed. I dated girls in HS. Finally, a cute guy put the moves on me, and I had my first gay sex. Then it all came to me. The only STD I ever had was crabs. I was a total top, so I survived the AIDS plague. I feel lucky to be alive, even at 64.

I used to work with her son, though I didn't know it at the time. Decent guy; quiet; intelligent. That was a good interview at R46; I originally found it after I left that company, which was when I somehow discovered "who" he was. (It wasn't common knowledge at work.)

by Anonymousreply 99July 24, 2018 3:23 AM

While it's true the pie thrower might not have been invited on the talk show circuit (except for Phil Donahue, though he wasn't), I still think it's odd that The Today Show or Good Morning America wouldn't have interviewed him.

In hindsight, it's amazing that his name is not known in Gay History. I know that probably sounds hyperbolic, yet.....

by Anonymousreply 100July 24, 2018 3:40 AM

between she and her ex husband unpaid federal taxes, bankrupcy, both were unfaithful while marred, divorce, she accused him of emotional abuse........they both ended up bitter at what the gays did to them quote unquote............her exhusband use to jog past their former miami beach mansion which they had to sell and cry all the way home 20 years later.................how pathetic and they both got what they deserved. The only thing that would have been even sweeter is if one of their kids had turned out to be gay. Perhaps they would have been much better off concentrating on bettering their own lives rather than to try and take away somebody else s liberties and rights.

by Anonymousreply 101July 24, 2018 3:44 AM

Wow - the first husband really was a boob. i wonder if he was crying about the mansion or his missing his supposedly great life with Anita. What a retard. And if their kid was gay I'm sure it would have been conversion therapy (or worse)

by Anonymousreply 102July 24, 2018 4:45 AM

Does anyone buy orang juice anymore in those little frozen canisters of concentrate?

by Anonymousreply 103July 24, 2018 5:14 AM

John Waters should’ve done a film about Anita Bryant. It would’ve been hilarious.

by Anonymousreply 104July 24, 2018 5:28 AM

Her initial argument was that she didn't want flamboyant homosexuals teaching kids. She said she doesn't know who's gay unless they self identify. She was on Donahue and he asked if she would have any problem if there were a gay teacher who never said anything about his/her sexuality (i.e. closeted) and she shot back defensively that that wasn't a fair question and didn't answer.

by Anonymousreply 105July 24, 2018 5:31 AM

And she was also very clear about wanting to reclaim the word "gay" from homosexuals.

by Anonymousreply 106July 24, 2018 5:34 AM

I guess she won out in the end. Now we have an orange president.

Ed and Eunice's boy? Well, I never!

That tickled me so, R113!

W&W for you!

r112 likable but with a hard edge. Joan Crawford would have been perfect. Jude Law would be great if he doesn't mind wearing a dress. If the movie is made after she dies the director can take lots of artistic liberties. Sadly she's only 78 and from Oklahoma and those ladies live forever !!

[quote] Does anyone buy orang juice anymore in those little frozen canisters of concentrate?

I never see those in the supermarket anymore. Maybe I've missed them.

Maybe not all markets carry. I occasionally buy lemon juice concentrate for mixed drinks. I still buy orange juice concentrate if I'm roasting a duck (not very often). I really don't drink orange juice anymore unless it's fresh squeezed. What a change. When I was younger I drank daily - it was always in my fridge. Now I don't even drink monthly - too much sugar. .

I've never seen lemon juice concentrate -- just lemonade concentrate.

Hadn’t thought of Bryant for years, though as a Chicagoan, I remember that interesting interview with her son posted upthread.

I’d forgotten she was a Miss America contestant, and was surprised to see the pageant in which she competed is available on YouTube. Don’t judge me, but I couldn’t resist checking out the portions featuring Bryant and the eventual winner, Mary Ann Mobley. My takeaway? Bryant is lovely (and it pains me to say that, since I find her vile) and has a lovely singing voice. But her song choice is bland and forgettable. Mobley exhibits more natural charm, and her song was MUCH more memorable.

Wasn't 1959 also the year Dawn Wells was Miss Nevada?
