A Star is Born (1976)
I just watched it on Netflix.
It wasn't great, but it wasn't as bad as the ham-fest with frumpy, old Judy Garland pretending to be an ingenue.
One thing I remember is a review that said Streisand taming a rock crowd was as believable as Kate Smith opening for the Rolling Stones. That is both hilarious and true.
While I thought Streisand sounded great, her song and demeanor were too old-fashion for the role.
I couldn't help but think that Carly Simon, who they had originally wanted, would have been so much better.

Kris Kristofferson is a really great actor. I believed every minute of his acting.

It's odd that two actresses (Barbra Streisand and Judy Garland) who have so much talent were so awful in the same role.

Yes, but could Carly Simon have written such a fantastic Oscar winning song?

OP....youre high. Carly simon was NEVER considered for the role.....it was a Streisand/Peters production and was intended as a star vehicle for Streisand. Jon Peters at the time was Streisands hairdresser and lover and it was his entry into film production. NOW, Elvis Presley was seriously courted for the part played by Kris Kristofferson, but the Colonel fucked up the deal and it never happened.

Streisand was delusional in it.

Well, actually I did.

That's adorable that you are such an idiot. Carly Simon and James Taylor were originally considered for the roles, but Carly thought it cut too close to the bone, as James's career was on the skids (something he was VERY sensitive about) while her's was doing really well.

I love how they thought Streisand's fro looked beautiful cast in a halo of back light. It was so overdone.

I absolutely hate the Judy Garland version. She is so old and ugly. It's silly.
And Streisand is better, but still too frumpy.
It needs an authentic, contemporary singer in the role.
Gaga could do it, but she is such a bad actress.

If Streisand, Peters and Priscilla Presley had gotten their way, this would have been the most iconic film pairing of all time.
If definitely would have been the biggest-selling movie soundtrack of all time.

Streisand didn't like the songs Holmes came up with so she hired Paul Williams and Ken Ascher.
It's odd that Streisand wrote the music to Evergreen, yet she's never written music for any other song. Makes me wonder if she just got the credit for the music, but Paul Williams wrote the whole thing. It's got the same musical tone as a song he wrote called Old Souls.

I think Elvis would have been PERFECT as the drugged-out has-been, and he had become so schmaltzy, it would be believable that Streisand would be able to wow his audiences.

That's not true. She wrote songs that appeared on her other CDs. In fact, one was used to underscore Nuts.

Fuck Judy and Barbra.
Janet Gaynor is gold. This is the one to watch.

Watching this now on TCM. Kris Kristofferson is so hot in this.
Babs really wanted to show her girls didn't she? They were threatening to pop out.
Some of the scenes are ridiculous though, like the one where Kristofferson gets Babs to sing to his unruly audience and they just suddenly fall in love with her!

Judy was neither "ugly", "old", nor "frumpy" in ASiB. You queens are so homophobic to feel the need to differentiate yourselves in this peculiar way.
I will "MARY!" myself!

Judy and Gaga were both 32 when their respective versions of the movie were released.

It's a very forgettable movie but it's less dreary and dull than the 2018 version and shorter than the 1954 film. None of them are good!

I think the '37 version is very good. Maybe because it's not a bloated musical and sticks to the main story.

I'll never get how Streisand became such a big movie star. A singer, of course, beautiful voice. Maybe it's a generational thing.

Not odd at all. She explains in the DVD commentary she wanted to learn the guitar for the movie and she had the melody stuck in her head and she practiced with it. She played it for Paul Williams and they went from there.
She co-wrote "Don't Lie To Me" from her last album about Trump. It's a great song.

It wasn't his audience, it was a Native American benefit so there were probably other acts there too. And she sings the shit that song, people would pay attention.

It's a revenge thing. Streisand goes in front of a hostile audience and converts them with her talent. Similar to the Blue Over You from Funny /girl.

The 1932 film "What Price Hollywood", directed by George Cukor and starring Lowell Sherman and Constance Bennett, was the first unofficial version, a variation of the Barbara Stanwyck and Frank Fay marriage. They altered it quite a bit for Janet Gaynor and Frederic March, and then George Cukor went on to do the 54 version.
Janet Gaynor is quite good, being comical in the party scene as she serves guests, doing imitations of Hepburn and Garbo. An earlier scene has her telling off nasty Aunt Clara Blandick who would get to do the same thinging to Margaret Hamilton two years later in "The Wizard of Oz".

Gotta admit people love the story, four versions, all Oscar nominated. Between the four they earned 25 nominations.

The music aspect was really good - the soundtrack was the biggest selling ever of its kind to that date I had it and loved it. His songs sound awful now. The film hasn't dated well. It's very of its era.

My mom's two favorite singers of all time are Barbra and Janis. Odd pairing for sure, but my mom's an odd woman. She always said Barbra playing Janis was just too unsettling for her. Like, it wasn't Barbra's world.
I loved the 76 version, however. But that's more for Kris.
