We had white trash neighbors who managed to fit something like 15 people into something like a 4 bedroom house. It consisted of a middle aged man and his fat wife who dyed her hair bright red (named Muriel, BTW), the man's senile mother (gram or gramma, who slept in the attic) and their 2 daughters plus their husbands and their kids. The 2 daughters kids all had to be named with names beginning with the same letter--Karen, Kathy, Kimberly and Keith and their cousins Brian, Brenda and Bruce. All of this was in the late '50s and early '60s. They grew a lot of their own food with berry bushes at the back of their lot with fruit trees on the side, right on the line with our property, plus a garden. The old man and I think his sons-in-law also fished and hunted (in season--I will give them that much credit). Once they caught a turtle and the old man explained to all the kids gathered around as he extracted the meat from the shell how to do it plus how to use the meat in cooking. I think he may have even told how you could use the shell. They would frequently have very public arguments and Gram would wander off and they would have a hell of a time trying to find her (it was a small town). She would piss herself then put on more long dresses overtop the one she had on. Before I realized I was gay a number of years later and after we had moved away and "up" from that neighborhood, Kathy and I sort of promised each other we would get married some day! Hey whatever happened to simple names like John and Mary (not MARY!).

PS r54 here again. Country music was the music of choice for the tribe next door too, but since all this was in northwestern Pennsylvania, the nearest country music station was WWVA in Wheeling, West Virginia. This was the time of Claude King (Wolverton Mountain--1962) and Elvis Presley.
