Mitch McConnell says "little can be done" about school shootings

Unreal.

"Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said Tuesday he thinks the federal government can’t do much to help stop school shootings.

“I don’t think at the federal level there’s much that we can do other than appropriate funds,” McConnell said while speaking to community leaders in Danville, Kentucky, the Lexington Herald-Leader reports.

McConnell said he feels heightened security in schools may help prevent shootings but argued that’s not the responsibility of the U.S. Congress."

Now we know he's in the NRA's pocket, but this is the most brazen example of deliberate tone-deafness. Clearly he thinks he's like Trump and can do/say whatever he wants at this point. But he just gave the middle finger to every victim of a mass shooting, school-based or not.

I'm young enough to dance on his grave oneday.

by Anonymousreply 1July 4, 2018 4:23 PM

I swear his death should be a national holiday.

by Anonymousreply 2July 4, 2018 4:23 PM

It's so sad that now, when there's another shooting in a school in the US, the world looks on and says, "oh it's another shooting in an American school".

If Americans, as a people, don't choose to change this, and they can. Then they will continually happen. The wild west ended 2 centuries ago. To hear some Americans talk, you would think that small town America, was still like the OK Corral.

Give up the guns. There's no need for then in the 21st Century.

by Anonymousreply 3July 4, 2018 4:29 PM

He's just shy. If you want to draw him out, ask Mitch what they can do at the federal level about abortion. He'll go on for days.

by Anonymousreply 4July 4, 2018 4:31 PM

This is so tone-deaf - as OP stated - that I have to wonder if he's planning to retire after his current term or if he's consumed with his own arrogance. This is the kind of think that should fuel voters to make sure Democrats take the Senate AND the House.

by Anonymousreply 5July 4, 2018 4:32 PM

Americans won't change it because it's almost always white males - it's the only reason they won't do anything and why it isn't taken seriously. Trump will immediately tweet about a brown guy thousands of miles away so much as jaywalking, but mass shooting after mass shooting and the Neo-Nazi fat fuck gives some meaningless "thoughts and prayers" response.

by Anonymousreply 6July 4, 2018 4:34 PM

Agree r2. Or we could just send thoughts and prayers.

by Anonymousreply 7July 4, 2018 4:36 PM

he's the single most evil man in the US right now

by Anonymousreply 8July 4, 2018 4:38 PM

Well, the public can do something by voting and putting the Democrats back in power and rendering this turd impotent.

by Anonymousreply 9July 4, 2018 4:39 PM

NRA: "School shootings GOOD."

by Anonymousreply 10July 4, 2018 4:45 PM

"Americans won't change it because it's almost always white males - it's the only reason they won't do anything and why it isn't taken seriously."

Black criminals are thugs, Muslim criminals are terrorists, but white male criminals are just mentally ill.

by Anonymousreply 11July 4, 2018 4:47 PM

Exactly, R11. It's like clockwork every time.

by Anonymousreply 12July 4, 2018 4:48 PM

Oh, and even if every white male is "mentally ill," congratulations to the Republicans for trying to completely destroy any semblance of a healthcare system to treat that "mental illness."

The only mental illness I see is the "rich man's disease" redefined - a disease where evil, insanely wealthy men have enough money to last that them hundreds of lifetimes and yet still feel it isn't enough. And they want to take away anything resembling a safety net for people who have a pittance compared to them.

by Anonymousreply 13July 4, 2018 4:53 PM

R13 will get lots of WWs. Except from those who call out "the poors," of course.

by Anonymousreply 14July 4, 2018 4:55 PM

The FBI has shown its incompetence too many times. It is up to local and state more than feds to affect change.

by Anonymousreply 15July 4, 2018 4:57 PM

McTurtle became very rich when he married Elaine Chao and her family's international shipping business. Read the Paradise Papers.

by Anonymousreply 16July 4, 2018 4:57 PM

Reagan in the 80s pretty much destroyed U.S. mental health public services.

When it was disclosed, George McGovern dumped Missouri Senator Tom Eagleton off the Democratic ticket for VP in 1972 due to having shock treatment for depression in his past; that set back progress per mental health for 50+ years.

None of these pro-NRA advocates are doing a damn thing to enhance mental health services.

by Anonymousreply 17July 4, 2018 5:10 PM

That's ironic R17 since Republican politicians are all either psychopaths or sociopaths.

by Anonymousreply 18July 4, 2018 5:12 PM

R18 that's why they fear being diagnosed.

by Anonymousreply 19July 4, 2018 5:13 PM

Nothing can be done? How about common sense gun control laws, asshole.

Nothing is done because McConnell doesn't want anything done.

by Anonymousreply 20July 4, 2018 5:47 PM

R11, exactly.

by Anonymousreply 21July 4, 2018 5:54 PM

Would any of these Repugs change their mind if their own kids were killed in a school shooting? Probably not. Once you sell your soul it’s just as easy to sacrifice your own for the cause.

by Anonymousreply 22July 4, 2018 6:02 PM

Leadership? Doing the right thing?

Sorry, can't do it unless its for Billionaires and Millionaires.

by Anonymousreply 23July 4, 2018 6:05 PM

Oh, what does the old turtle head know?

by Anonymousreply 24July 4, 2018 6:06 PM

oh darrrrnnnnnnn

by Anonymousreply 25July 4, 2018 6:32 PM

I'll tell you what they can do. They can ban the use of exotic, space aged weaponry which is seeing rampant use throughout the world now. V2K. Voice of God weapon. Sonic weapons. Satellite weapons. Drones and more and more. All being used for nefarious purposes. The silent crime. The perfect crime. These mass shootings are being engineered by design, and he damned well knows it!

Mitch is so full of shit they should name all the outdoor toilets in the National Park Service in honor of him when he finally kicks the bucket. Of course by that time the parks and toilets will have been sold off to the private sector.

by Anonymousreply 29July 4, 2018 7:22 PM

And yet the idiots in Kentucky will vote him in again and again, despite their situation not ever improving by doing so!

by Anonymousreply 30July 4, 2018 7:26 PM

this is almost deserving of its own meme:

"mr schlomo says 'little can be done about xyx'. "

it can be applied by any politician, anytime and for any reason!

by Anonymousreply 31July 4, 2018 7:46 PM

Justice will be served when Mitch is shot by "misunderstood" white nazi teenager with an assault rifle outfitted with a bump stock. Said teen's Facebook page will have been weaponized by Russian hackers to villainize turtles.

by Anonymousreply 32July 4, 2018 7:55 PM

Well, at least Mitch is honest that he genuinely has no fucks to give about the whole thing - I mean none of the repubs do really, they just pay lip service to crap about arming teachers, prayers for victims, my heart breaks for the children and whatnot, but Mitch blatantly says he doesn't care. It's better than being a two faced fraud like Ted Cruz, I guess.

I agree that he sounds like a guy ready to cash it in. Now that he's kept Dumpy afloat long enough to appoint two (and possibly a third, god help us) Supreme Court judges that will keep SCOTUS in the pocket of the Koch family for years to come, so his work is done. Let's hope he goes home to KY and puts a shotgun in his mouth.

by Anonymousreply 33July 4, 2018 8:08 PM

That's my boy! I'm so proud of him.

by Anonymousreply 34July 4, 2018 8:16 PM

Why would Mitch work so hard for his own self interest and then put a shotgun in his mouth?

by Anonymousreply 35July 4, 2018 8:37 PM

When a Muslim or Latino kills someone, it's time to stop immigration and shut down the borders. But when a white guy kills someone, nothing can be done.

by Anonymousreply 36July 5, 2018 4:29 AM

WHY DON'T YOU LEAVE MY HUSBAND ALONE?!

by Anonymousreply 37July 5, 2018 4:53 AM

Mitch. Isn't he the one who's wife's relatives were busted with copious amounts of heroin or cocaine aboard their yaht - obvious trafficking - and NOTHING was done about it? I think so.....

by Anonymousreply 40July 5, 2018 2:03 PM

I hope someone kills him

by Anonymousreply 41July 5, 2018 3:01 PM

That one West Virginia politician who lost in the GOP primary termed McConnell "Cocaine Mitch". He apparently wasn't referring to personal use, but his financial ties to an in-law cartel caught trafficking Cocaine.

That makes Mitch a bit less sexy, but would still do him if pressed.

Frau here. My POS Representative is Gosar, who I know is a lost cause, but after the last school shooting I was so desperate (I have two school-aged kids) I called up his office just to BEG them to do *something*, anything for God's sake. I shit you not, some aide, not any older than 24 said, "Man, YOU Don't understand the issue correctly. School gun violence isn't the purview of the Federal government. The Congressman understands that this is an issue that will need to be mediated in the home through Family Dynamics, or resolved with solutions by local school districts. So you SEE Representative Gosar's hands are really tied". I have never felt my head come off my body before with sheer heat and rage until that day.

by Anonymousreply 50July 6, 2018 1:59 AM

"School gun violence isn't the purview of the Federal government"

Of course, if most school shooters were Muslim or Latino, you know Trump's government would feel compelled to act ASAP

by Anonymousreply 51July 6, 2018 2:06 AM

You know, the other day, I was browsing some photos of Mitch when he was young. He actually was not repulsive. Ya gotta hand it to the guy. He's worked long and hard, divesting himself of any shred of decency or humanity, to achieve the truly stomach-turning pan with which he assaults our sensibilities.

by Anonymousreply 56July 6, 2018 5:00 PM

Why do people like this never seem to get aggressive, painful, wasting cancer?

by Anonymousreply 57July 6, 2018 5:46 PM

Because they ARE aggressive, painful, wasting cancer, r57.

by Anonymousreply 58July 6, 2018 5:55 PM

I hope Mueller has some indictments for the republican leadership since most of them are working for Russia and the wealthy donors, (NRA, gun manufacturers).

by Anonymousreply 59July 6, 2018 6:02 PM

Unbelievable- he's a latter day Hoover who would not could not do anything about the Depression. Can McConnell be this ignorant about what other nations do to minimize gun violence- with success? This is what I find so remarkable about Republicans. Are they really this stupid- or is the power of the NRA really that important to McConnell- a tool for him to maintain power- to keep his "job"? I just revert to thinking him evil incarnate.

by Anonymousreply 60July 6, 2018 6:07 PM

R60 It's all about the money. the NRA is one of the conduits of Russian money.

by Anonymousreply 61July 6, 2018 6:09 PM

Hey r50. Wow. You just don't forget a response like that. I commend you for not exploding.

But it's so tone deaf I have to think many parents would be outraged. Soon we'll run out of people who aren't somehow connected to victims of a school shooting. The outrage will grow.

I hope you've told as many people as you can.

There were rumors around Lexington, KY that had swirled for years , that way back in the day little Mitchie was really fond of men. I guess this would have been 60's-70's, just guessing. Eldergays told me about this early in the 90's. If it were that time period, it would've been when Rock Hudson was supposed to have partially owned a popular gay bar in Lexington. All speculation and rumor. Maybe some of my fellow eldergays can shine some light.

by Anonymousreply 65July 7, 2018 5:18 AM

I WON'T have him be gay!

by Anonymousreply 66July 7, 2018 5:33 AM

My understanding is that Australia is a very good example of a country that radically decreased gun violence by limiting access to guns. Of course the NRA would say, well it's an island, that's why it worked there.
