Bay City Rollers Cofounder Alan Longmuir Dies at 70. I still love them.

They were the first huge teen blitz in the UK after the David Cassidy Donny Osmond era. Hit the states hard too. Made a lot of money(for their crooked manager) “Money Honey” kinda rocked.

Seems just like yesterday. And even though they were English they named themselves after Bay City, Michigan. Go figure.

I knew them slightly back when. I am really disturbed that the drummer turned out to be a pedophile. That ruined a lot of great memories.

I worked with one of them. R.I.P. Alan.

I wore plaid in high school hoping to look like an American Bay City Roller.
I wound up looking like some farm kid whose mom sewed him clothes from old horse blankets.

BCR manager Tam Paton quite often helped the police with their inquiries. Usual reasons.

My cousins were BCR mega fans in rural Australia. I remember visiting them one Xmas and these three flame haired tweens came bouncing out the door in the complete outfits their mum had sewed them. It was a bit surreal, being dragged off to the bedroom to three hours of Bay City Roller tapes, Bay City Roller dance routines (complete with hairbrush microphones) and excitable babble about which Bay City Roller had the cutest eyes, best haicut or would be nicest to their fans.
Ah it was an innocent time.

Alan's brother Derek is/was the pedophile.

From what I've heard about the Rollers and all the horny teenage girl fans that followed them I'd say they were ALL pedophiles. If you think about it, what 70s rock star wasn't?

^Elton John.

I remember a girl a few doors down told everyone in the neighbourhood that one the BCRollers was her cousin. I don't know if it was true, but we were all suitably impressed.

Sexual assault, drugs, prison.

I'm embarrassed to say that I looked at the photo R15 posted and was able to name all five Rollers without even pausing to think.

Ian! Pat!

There was a big “scandal” back in the day at 16 magazine with Pat’s centerfold wearing only a tartan scarf! How scandalous!

I think that was Stuart Wood, R29.

Ugh to this group, and ugh to their music. It was tripe.

They were connected to 16 for much of their North American media blitz. At least one of the 16 staff was gay, and often followed their tours for the magazine. Pat and Ian were in only a few months each, then gone. Pat was a young teen that was raped by their manager. When his dad found out, he beat Tam Paton up. Ian was still a teen too, but I’m guessing he didn’t mine bending over. He didn’t last though. His contract was based on retribution against Alan Longmuir, whom Paton wanted out for not being young enough anymore. Longmuir had also stood up to the bullying and violence Paton dished out. Those guys were abused a lot, much of it happened in their teens away from home and they’re fucked up. They were around guys like Paton, Clive Davis in their heyday and others constantly.
