The trick for success when working with boilerplate stereotypes is the characters need to be either likeable, anyhow, or completely deplorable. Few productions have the guts and talent to go there.

I guess I'm just curious as to what the end game is for something like this. They got enough money to shoot the pilot. Does that mean there won't be any more episodes? Are they hoping by putting this out, it will help launch ANOTHER kickstarter to raise funds to shoot more episodes? And how long will that take? It took them 15 months to put out one 19 minute episode.

Even the most successful of gay themed or gay friendly web series (The Outs, Submissions Only, Wallflowers, Eastsiders, and whatever that Aussie dyke one was called) really got their creators nowhere in terms of getting their shows picked up and moved to larger platforms or even got them any sort of other deals to develop new shows. The only people who have really seen any sort of success from doing web series are Issa Rae and the folks who did High Maintenance.

Where the Bears Are is a totally different case. They have been ragingly successful, but it's a business for them. They have a very large, devoted fan base that helps them fund every season. They sell their own DVDs and other products. They don't want their show on any other platform to dilute views. They've been really smart in figuring out how to exploit (and not in a bad way) a subculture of the gay community, one that has always felt underrepresented, and given them a consistently well made product. I don't love the show; I've seen maybe 2-3 episodes tops, and it's not really made for me, but I admire the fuck out of those guys for figuring out how to be a success in this particular medium.

I just don't understand the point of West 40s. Web Series have been around long enough that it's completely clear that there's no way to find success with them. The bubble didn't just burst, there never was a bubble to begin with. Instead of cherry picking talent, money people just developed their own streaming sites and hired famous people to create content.

I mean, maybe these guys have a story they want to tell and that's their only motivation, but I kind of doubt it.

I liked the first season of In Between Men, but I guess because of lack of funding the rest got bad fast.

I wonder whatever became of that series.

A lot of comedy is based in stereotypes and/or exaggeration. I don't know if I've seen a show about "blacks liking watermelons and chitlins," but certainly a lot of the writing and acting of black characters in TV sitcoms features a stereotypically "black" subject matter and style of speech.

It looks stupid more than anything else.

If they can't even get a channel like that to jump on it, then they'd better have some deep pocketed fans or you won't be seeing too many more episodes.

Now, Revry and Dekkoo would easily pick this show up to put on their channels for a nominal licensing fee (or in Revry's case, a per view percentage, because they don't have two nickels to rub together) if it was already done, but they have clearly been turned down by both for funding.

It really takes a particular talent to be able to make something watchable and flow well. They do it so effortlessly that you don't even think about it. When it isn't done effortlessly, like here, you feel every clunky drop of dialouge, staging, acting, camerawork, etc. It really makes me appreciate Lena Dunham.

I have seen extremely low budget projects that are better than this. While budget is a factor, it is not the only factor (e.g., there are plenty of multimillion dollar pieces of crap out there). In this case, the script and acting are lacking, and nothing can save a project when that is the case.

Yes, HUSTLING was a good series.

But it's not a comedy, more of a chill soap opera.

The only way this would work is if they make it more meta. Make it about a has-been who is desperately trying to pitch a show to HBO and failing miserably. The comedy is derived from how unself-aware and out of touch he and his friends are and results in many funny, cringe-worthy moments. HBO might even pick this one up if it's retooled this way.

Hustling was decent. The Outs was really great for its first 4 episodes, then it fell apart. Submissions Only had I think three seasons, and it was fantastic, but not really gay themed. I would have watched a 4th season, but I think they went out on a good note. Eastsiders is awful, but it has been successful-ish. The guy who created it is a hustler. (Not a sex hustler.) Where the Bears Are is silly fun and probably the most successful gay web series ever. Those guys bust ass and they're nice and deserve all the success they've gotten. He's With Me was gay-ish and well done, but didn't really have much to say after the first season and would have been stronger as a one and done. Wallflowers was good and had some really good production value, but was also not really gay themed. And I think whatever was funding them collapsed so they only did two seasons. Out With Dad was okay, but it as Canadian, so, you know. And Revry has something called Gayborhood which is execrable. I know there are other gay series I've watched on Revry, but I can't remember them.

Anyway I think most of these are from 3-5 years ago. The only one still in production is Where the Bears Are. Web series are dunzo.

But... but.... HBO picked up the web series HIGH MAINTENANCE, and now it's a much buzzed about cult hit!

It's not specifically gay, but it includes a fair amount of G&L stuff.

They usually are glorified show reels for the lead who is usually also the one who wrote the script, and is the director, etc.
