Mobile Alabama

Is this a welcoming city? Specifically outgoing middle class white gay guy in his 50's? How would one get on with neighbours and join the community?

It's fucking Alabama you stupid bitch.

by Anonymousreply 1June 26, 2018 9:43 PM

They’re still passing laws to prevent blacks people from voting OP. That’s what you’ll find there.

by Anonymousreply 2June 26, 2018 9:44 PM

"It's not just a tree; it's a capital punishment device on your very own lawn!"

by Anonymousreply 3June 26, 2018 9:48 PM

I can't imagine where one has to be living to think moving to ALABAMA is a good life choice.

by Anonymousreply 4June 26, 2018 10:07 PM

Is it technically supposed to be pronounced - Mo-beel, or Mo-bi-al or just flat like the gas station Mo-bal. It's the first one, right?

by Anonymousreply 5June 26, 2018 10:18 PM

OP, are you the guy from that Sarah Sanders/Red Hen thread who kept trying to justify not calling out vocal Trumpite friends, on the basis of "Well I'm not from here, so I don't want to be seen as a hypocrite"?

by Anonymousreply 6June 26, 2018 10:24 PM

no not that guy R6. Was just wondering if by miracle a forgotten city like Mobile might have a nice lifestyle.

by Anonymousreply 7June 26, 2018 10:26 PM

There's plenty of gays who live in "red" cities and states. Obviously, results may vary.

by Anonymousreply 8June 26, 2018 10:27 PM

I have some distant relatives that live there and remember an old woman talking about Mobile and saying that Mobile was a small town with not much going on in her day. Her daddy used to say that Mobile supported itself by taking in each other’s washing.

by Anonymousreply 9June 26, 2018 10:29 PM

I have a friend who lives there with his husband. He likes it. I can't imagine living there.

by Anonymousreply 10June 26, 2018 10:37 PM

The beaches are suppose to be great. The rents and home prices are low. But you're still in Alabama.

by Anonymousreply 11June 26, 2018 10:39 PM

Do you want to be surrounded by people who voted for Trump and think he is making america great again? Cause that's where you'll be.

by Anonymousreply 12June 26, 2018 10:43 PM

Is that where the Mobile phone was invented?

by Anonymousreply 13June 26, 2018 11:03 PM

Op do you have several full length outfits made from long white sheets with matching hoods with pointy caps? If you do you’ll fit right in.

by Anonymousreply 14June 26, 2018 11:33 PM

Alabama is one of the fattest, saddest, trashiest places on earth.

The Bellingrath Gardens are lovely.

Depends on which church you go to, OP.

by Anonymousreply 17June 26, 2018 11:45 PM

OP, The A gays are moving there fast. You should jump on board.

by Anonymousreply 18June 26, 2018 11:47 PM

I don't think Alabama is very mobile.

by Anonymousreply 19June 26, 2018 11:49 PM

Mobile County is pink. Plus there is a blue stripe across the state. I'm not defending Alabama and even with a blue stripe you are still ruled by the conservative judiciary and state legislature. No idea what law enforcement is like. Just pointing out there are places in Alabama that don't fit R12's description. It's like claiming you will be surrounded by Clinton voters is you move to NYC ignoring the election results in Staten Island.

by Anonymousreply 20June 27, 2018 12:32 AM

They have at least four Walmart supercenters.

What's not to love?

It's Mobile, Alabama. What do You think?

by Anonymousreply 22June 27, 2018 12:50 AM

Real estate prices are excellent.

Real estate prices are always excellent in shitholes in the deep south because there is NO demand except from desperately poor idiots.

by Anonymousreply 24June 27, 2018 12:54 AM

I once worked with a woman who had come to RI from Alabama. She told me some stories that were scary as all hell to me, enough to know I'd never, ever move to Alabama.

by Anonymousreply 25June 27, 2018 12:58 AM

Since you're an outgoing type OP you'll enjoy the nightlife and the chance to mix and mingle.

That looks about my speed as the years will soon accumulate. What about floods?

by Anonymousreply 27June 27, 2018 1:05 AM

Kamau Bell did a show on CNN in Mobile. He's originally from there. He was very positive about it. The episode's probably up on YouTube. Mobile brags there are no Confederate statues there and apparently managed to keep its nose clean during the 60s.

by Anonymousreply 28June 27, 2018 1:06 AM

I swore I'd never live in a Mobile home.

by Anonymousreply 29June 27, 2018 1:08 AM

Maybe I could buy some well-placed land and rebuild a larger version of this, the abandoned Bamboo Club of Mobile.

As a Florida resident, I can tell you that Mobile is on the west end of the Florida panhandle.

We call that area the Red Neck Riviera. The place is beautiful. The people are not.

Stay in the closet and discuss how your girl friend just hates the summer heat. You cant convince her to move to Mobile.

by Anonymousreply 31June 27, 2018 1:18 AM

Hilton redid a 75 year old hotel, The Admiral, as a Curio Coll. It looks kinda cool.

The beach in the Kamau Bell show (United Shades of America) looked beautiful. He interviewed two black gay men who dance in some club there. They love Mobile.

by Anonymousreply 33June 27, 2018 1:24 AM

R24 - that maybe true. I've looked at apartments in Mobile. They are inexpensive and nice. Take a look at what $800 gets you.

Just wear Depends R27 and you'll be fine.

by Anonymousreply 35June 27, 2018 1:27 AM

Op I'm sorry if Alabama Is an option you need to consider. I would rather be dead.

by Anonymousreply 36June 27, 2018 1:29 AM

It's no worse than smaller-city Midwest.

by Anonymousreply 37June 27, 2018 1:33 AM

[quote]The beach in the Kamau Bell show (United Shades of America) looked beautiful. He interviewed two black gay men who dance in some club there. They love Mobile.

He also interviewed an older white man who runs a museum there and there was no way he wasn't gay.

by Anonymousreply 38June 27, 2018 1:35 AM

I suspect one of the Prancing Elites is single. Your dating pool may have just increased with them in town. I hope you are a top.

by Anonymousreply 39June 27, 2018 4:57 AM

R38 yeah. OP should watch the show. It was surprisingly positive to me.

by Anonymousreply 40June 27, 2018 5:10 AM

R10, help a sister out.

What do your friends do for fun? Are their LGBT organizations or social groups going on there? Do they belong to a gay-friendly church.

We need to help OP out NOW, or he's going to swarm DL with "Why did I move to Fucking Alabama" threads LATER.

by Anonymousreply 41June 27, 2018 5:15 AM

[quote]Mobile County is pink

When the best you can say is "pink" that says it all, this urban county is still red. Red enough it goes for Trump by double-digits. Aka, if you move there, you will be surrounded by people who mainly voted for Trump.

[quote]It's like claiming you will be surrounded by Clinton voters is you move to NYC ignoring the election results in Staten Island.

Well yes, New York City as a whole went 79% for Clinton. So if you move there you will be surrounded by Clinton voters. Whereas Clinton got 41% of Mobile county, which is 35% black.

If you are someone is used to living in blue areas, the prospect of living in an area where most people around who are actually pro-Trump is a significant life change.
