No one is coming to save us

Not Mueller, not the Supreme Court, not the Cabinet, not the Republican Party. A whole mess of people have sold this country to Putin for personal gain. We're done. Stick a fork in us.

We'll know in November where we stand. But these remaining four months are probably going to be the ugliest of this whole regime, so strap in.

I love listening to intricate conspiracy theories from people who two years ago couldn't tell you who Vladimir Putin is, much less find Russia on a map.

by Anonymousreply 9June 26, 2018 8:22 PM

Overconfidence? You "only" needed foreign interference, voter suppression, and FBI meddling to get your candidate to barely squeak into office. And he still lost the popular vote. So much about overconfidence.

by Anonymousreply 10June 26, 2018 8:23 PM

[quote] You snooze, you lose. We told you so in 2016. Overconfidence is lethal.

I don't get this. I voted. I begged other people to vote. I didn't snooze and was not overconfident.

[quote] I love listening to intricate conspiracy theories from people who two years ago couldn't tell you who Vladimir Putin is, much less find Russia on a map.

Putting aside the obvious idiocy of this response (we knew who Putin was and where Russia was), there is nothing intricate about believing that Republicans, including the POTUS, were funneled Russian money and decided to take it.

by Anonymousreply 11June 26, 2018 8:27 PM

Yes, overconfidence. Hillary barely made campaign stoop appearances after Labor Day 2016 and didn’t step foot in multiple swing states she lost. She even was quoted as questioning why she wasn’t up by a landslide over Trump. She was a lazy, inert, incompetent campaigner.

by Anonymousreply 12June 26, 2018 8:27 PM

So, this is all Clinton's fault. Got it.

by Anonymousreply 13June 26, 2018 8:30 PM

You personally may not have been overconfident, but Media and Democrats generally expressed confidence there was no way Trump could win with his craziness and the built in demographic and electoral college advantage of Democrats. They also claimed Republicans were divided about Trump and their turnout would be supressed. Others said Latinos, blacks, women, and youth were so incensed by Trump, they would stampede the voting booth.

by Anonymousreply 14June 26, 2018 8:32 PM

So your way of responding to the fact that Trump, the Republicans, and the Supreme Court are destroying the American way of life is to point fingers at Dems.

Except he got to install Gorsuch instead of Garland. And the oldest people in the Court are the liberals and will likely be replaced by more Gorsuches. That will last longer than Trump.

by Anonymousreply 21June 26, 2018 8:43 PM

But we aren't. I still see Sanders supporters saying they won't vote for Democrats because they aren't liberal enough. Immigrants are the new scapegoats and once they are all tossed, they will turn on us.

When did Clinton call ALL of tRump voters "racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic"? Quote, please.

She called 12% of the voters (half of the eligible voters voted in the election, less than half of those voted for tRump) "deplorable".

by Anonymousreply 33June 26, 2018 9:21 PM

FFS, R29, yet Trump was spewing his racist shit everywhere, lying out of his ass all the time, dozens of women came out to accuse him, he had the grab em by the pussy tape, but Hillary called sexists, mysoginists and racists deplorables, so naturally she's the evil one! She called them a mean name!

by Anonymousreply 34June 26, 2018 9:27 PM

Yeah, I get the feeling Mueller is going to say, "Yeah, I can't pin anything on him," if we ever get to that point. And the repugs won't bring the turd up on any impeachment charges even if Mueller has a steaming lava pile of evidence. Most importantly, "we" aren't doing anything differently since the trauma of November 2016, so how are we to expect anything will be changed? Putrump has the world where he wants us -- thrown off balance and just reacting to one atrocity after another. The fact that the media made Trump the story 24/7 is what gave him the WH. Any publicity is good publicity for PT Barnum Trump, and "we" talk about him endlessly. What has changed? There's absolutely nothing that will knock his base out from under him, including if he shot every idiot standing behind him at his tantrum rallies.

"They" (the dark side) already had the Supremes, so we're actually quite f-ed for about 40 years. They just waited til today to remind us. And when Putin magically wins every seat in the midterms, what exactly are we going to do about it? I'm not looking at any Dem to save us, either. We already took out a hopeful Franken (thanks, Kirsten Gillibrand), so we are more apt to just self destruct more than getting a beating. No one is inspiring a liberal march to the polls, either.

Maybe we can just hope for a Canadian coup.

by Anonymousreply 35June 26, 2018 9:32 PM

Forgive me, R31, I should say "over 20% of all American voters".

That's exactly the point, R34. Trump is gross, but didn't insult the American voters.

I'm not trying to "sell" anything. If you have a different opinion, that's fine. But that's my opinion on where the election turned.

You will save yourselves. Looking in from the outside, I still have faith in the US. It might take time, it might not be over this November, but the political pendulum will swing, and enough people will decide that they want decency back in the political process. When that happens, change will come quickly. The Republicans are gutless and disloyal, but when they feel that Trump is a vote-loser, they will turn against him. They are held hostage by him, but the party leaders have no loyalty to him.

Trump represents the last cry of rage of an ageing demographic who hated seeing an intelligent, dignified black man in the White House. That generation will die out and, as always, the next generation will react against the previous one.

Have faith. There is greatness left in the American constitutional system, and you will use it to cleanse your politics of the contagion which has gripped it.

The report will be shocking in the depth of Trumps crimes and depravity. Not just Russia and Trump but several other countries where Trump has exchanged money for favors. American gays better save money. It will soon illegal to be gays or engage in any gay activities. Gay clubs will be closed. Gays will be bullied, beat up and jailed. Trump will ensure it will happen very soon.

by Anonymousreply 60June 27, 2018 1:27 AM

It is not hard to move to Spain if you do not work in Spain and can demonstrate that you have adequate income to live there also. I have a job with a US based company and I work entirely remotely. I will not be taking a job from any Spaniard. Spain has 25 % unemployment. They welcome expats who have the money to live there, pay rent and support Spanish economy with purchase power. You cannot compare Spain to the UK or Australia. You must be quite wealthy to be able to move to the UK and not need to work there.

I have done due diligence and understand the taxation issues as well - just adding that in before someone brings that up.

Part of me says fight Trump like he fights, but then I look at the graveyard of those who tried that including, Jeb!, Lil Marco, “Crooked Hillary,” Mark “Appalachian Trail” Sanford, Bob Corker, and Lyin Ted. Trump is a natural charlatan, bruiser, conman, thug, and bigot. You can’t beat him at being down and dirty. Now the problem is what’s the alternative because whatever has been tried Aint working.

Russia's disinfo campaign has been well documented for years even before the 2016 Election even happened. When you rant about people not knowing who Vladimir Putin or finding Russia on a math, you're talking about yourself. You're not talking about the people who've been keeping abreast of the situation since 2014, 2015. That's why YOU find the stories about Russian collusion so incredulous. You yourself didn't know who the fuck Putin was, didn't know anything about Russia and now are incredulous that a country and leader that wasn't on your radar could've done such a thing as meddled in the presidential elections.

And as noted above, they are happy to have Americans with a means to support themselves come and live there and support the weak Spanish economy. by Anonymousreply 68June 27, 2018 1:54 AM

I've been watching a show on Netflix called Escape to the Continent. It is about British couples wanting to move south because it is so much cheaper and it is their dream. There are several shows in Spain but there are other countries too. France, Greece, Portugal, etc. They usually tour 4 houses, show style of living, language, etc. It is very eye-opening and interesting. Most housing is $100,000 cheaper than it would be in Britain. And there's the charm factor. But the couples seem a little rattled by the end of it. The south of France one, the couple still wanted to move. It seems to be the language that seems to be a bit of a stumbling block. But give a couple episodes a try. If I were younger, I'd go.

by Anonymousreply 69June 27, 2018 1:59 AM

R55 A few years ago I realized I was burnt out seeing patients. And I just don't see myself being able to adapt to a new system of practicing medicine after 2 decades practicing medicine in the US. Also I started a disability review consulting service and I enjoy that and it can be lucrative. I have travelled all over the world and have worked in Africa and South America with medical charity organizations. I have been to Spain many times and have always loved Seville ( I speak Spanish fluently). The Costa del Sol is also very affordable and another option.

R69 Unlike the British folks, I grew up in an American/Latino city - Los Angeles. I have lived and worked in Mexico and South America and speak Spanish fluently (in fact, I spent the summer before medical school studying Spanish in Sevilla.)

by Anonymousreply 70June 27, 2018 2:10 AM

How many of us have stable, reliable jobs -- jobs that we'd want to do and could do for another few decades -- that have the potential to be 100% remote?

by Anonymousreply 71June 27, 2018 2:12 AM

R71 I know, most do not have these opportunities. I am thankful that I loved to study and read, and got a scholarship to a good medical school, and dedicated approximately a decade to studying and working at the hospital, often working 100 hours a week. Now, twenty years later, I can reap some of the benefits for sacrificing my 20's to study and endless hospital rounds and overnight call. I can't even tell you what TV shows or music were popular during those years. Now in my late 40's I am ready to have some fun in Spain to make up for those difficult, lost years.

by Anonymousreply 72June 27, 2018 2:22 AM

R61 I say go for it. It took me along time to realize that one day it will be my last.

by Anonymousreply 73June 27, 2018 2:31 AM

OP is right. It's no use.

by Anonymousreply 74June 27, 2018 2:35 AM

Thanks for the link R53. I'm within 6 years of retirement age and hoping to move outside the U.S. if not full time then at least for half of the year.

I went on a hiking/walking trip to Ireland earlier this year. It was cold and rained everyday and the walk took me through muddy farmers fields covered in sheep and cow shit. It was my worst vacation but when I came back to the U.S. and begin to catch up on the news which seems to be mostly related to politics lately I notice my stress/anxiety levels increased. The left vs the right arguments is getting old and I see it on the few blogs I visit and even at my local diner at breakfast.

I've been to Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Japan and Scotland and was planning a trip to Portugal but it looks like I need to add Spain to my bucket list.

by Anonymousreply 75June 27, 2018 2:36 AM

R71, as it happens, I also work in health care, and do have a job that can be conducted remotely (via teletherapy). I also lived in Spain for several years (Madrid, not Sevilla), and have considered doing precisely what you have described, in the event that conditions worsen in the U.S.

I asked that question because this is not about me, or you -- it's about all of us. I was raised by fundamentalist evangelicals whose attitude was very much, "We got ours. Why should we care about those other people?" They thought that if others lived in poverty and desperation, it must be because they hadn't worked hard enough. I'm truly happy that you are finally able to enjoy yourself after decades of sacrifice -- I know from watching close friends and relatives exactly what is lost (sleep, family time, fun, friends, sex, love) when someone decides to become a doctor -- but it saddens me to see that kind of thinking here.

by Anonymousreply 99June 28, 2018 3:18 AM

Should we just give up?

by Anonymousreply 100June 28, 2018 3:29 AM

Now these billionaires are so powerful they can pretty much install whoever they want. And keep them their bitch. It's time for pitch forks and storming their castles. Tax their asses at 90% and confiscate 90% of their (stolen) wealth.

No, no one will save us. We have to save ourselves. Small, local units of resistance in Red states, blue walls in blue states. A Ho Chi Minh trail of resistance.

This is not even as bad as it's going to get. It's a process to break us emotionally. Each defeat weakens us. They know this. We take deep breaths and continue. Every vote matters, every gesture of resistance matters.

So, are some of the people on this thread thinking about moving to Spain or something?

by Anonymousreply 104June 28, 2018 3:52 AM

Smells of a revolution.

Fuck you bitch. I can't afford to relocate and I'm old, so staying to fight these cocksuckers.

What have you got against cocksucking?

by Anonymousreply 107June 28, 2018 5:34 AM

So what are the safe blue states for now?

I'm in Virginia which used to be reliably red but has trending bluer and bluer over the past decade.

Oh yeah, OP?

Eli's coming - hide your heart, gurl.

I'm an asshole and a skeptic, but I trust Mueller. Not one breath of scandal on his side during any of this (and you know Trump paid top dollar to his top guido to find some dirt), and not one leak on Mueller's team.

He's going to drop the hammer and when it happens, it will end Trump.

by Anonymousreply 110June 28, 2018 5:54 AM

Hoping and praying you are correct, R110.

by Anonymousreply 111June 28, 2018 6:00 AM

Exactly, OP. It's already over.

Most Americans woke up too late, if they have at all yet. THEY are " the people who allowed this to happen." THEY ignored years of data, and warnings by experts and activists. Fuck. Them. Fuck you braindead conformists who are to blame tor this nightmare.

by Anonymousreply 112June 28, 2018 6:21 AM

Wow, in two years, we have gone from brave new world of progressive delight and bright future to a Dystopian despair and depression. Not voting is deadly.

by Anonymousreply 113June 28, 2018 10:00 AM

That’s the ballgame. We might never win another civil rights victory in our lifetimes

by Anonymousreply 117June 28, 2018 10:40 AM

Why are Democrats and Liberals so passive?

by Anonymousreply 118June 28, 2018 11:01 AM

So, OP, what else is new?

by Anonymousreply 119June 28, 2018 11:13 AM

They won. The rest of this century is theirs.

by Anonymousreply 120June 28, 2018 12:50 PM

[quote]I'm an asshole and a skeptic, but I trust Mueller.

That's nice, but I wouldn't trust the new Supreme Court to answer the questions that will be directed to it if Mueller does indeed "drop the hammer" on Trump:

Does POTUS have to turn over evidence in a criminal probe, like the Nixon tapes? Must a POTUS testify before a grand jury? Can a POTUS be indicted?

The answers, of course, will be no, no and no -- by a 5-4 margin.

by Anonymousreply 121June 28, 2018 1:05 PM

People need to remember the SC can rule itself into irrelevance if it doesn’t follow judicial protocols. They have to be able to actual substantiate a decision. Too many idiotic ones and they will lose all relevance.

Additionally, plenty of corporations support gay rghts. Nothing the SC does can stop that. The Republicans are dead set on tearing the country apart but to what end? Corporations still have power. States will become more powerful in making up for the feds’ deficiencies.

It will be ugly, there will be economic hardship, the country will become even more starkly and aggressively divided but the good news is, eventually all of the baby boomer will die. And the GOP will be over for good.

Resist, oppose, take action, don’t give up. This will end up like when the GOP tries to make policy: short-sighted, cruel and pointless. People will tire of it very quickly. Even the GOP likely doesn’t want to see a complete end to the culture wars. They’re not meant to end, they’re meant to be perpetuated.

by Anonymousreply 122June 28, 2018 1:11 PM

Thomas might now retire just to spite Liberals. He has signaled he wants to step down. However, he probably wants to stay long enough to be part of the historic new Court that will overturn Roe and radically remake American society and jurisprudence for the rest of this century.

by Anonymousreply 123June 28, 2018 1:51 PM

Why are Democrats so passive? Because they're too busy worrying about where transgender people pee. The Republicans are united on their core issues. Hell, even Evangelicals embrace a man as close to Satan as you can get. But Dems? Splinter City. Everybody's special and got their own agenda. I wish the Dems would focus on universal human rights like income equality, healthcare, education, and fair immigration laws. AND bring us a white male non-geezer, candidate in 2020 with governmental experience.

by Anonymousreply 124June 28, 2018 2:03 PM

[quote] Additionally, plenty of corporations support gay rghts. Nothing the SC does can stop that. The Republicans are dead set on tearing the country apart but to what end? Corporations still have power.

R122, what I fear is that most people are secretly not at all supportive of gay rights and not at all comfortable with gay people. To the extent that it's considered the socially correct -- and, therefore, the profitable -- thing to do, sure, individuals and corporations will wave the rainbow flag. But if the tide turns, and that pressure disappears, I think their support will disappear.

Because the LGBTQQIAA2+etc. umbrella covers 30% of the population (the counter-cultural, the fashionably coiffed, straight people who think of themselves as kinky), it has been easy for us all to convince ourselves that we are a more powerful contingent than we really are.

But real gay men and lesbians will always be a very, very small segment of the population, and, consequently, a vulnerable one.

by Anonymousreply 125June 28, 2018 3:11 PM

Yeah, the tide can quickly turn. Corporations only support gay rights because the culture changed to support it. Culture changed largely because homosexuality became minimally accepted or tolerated. At the same time, current polls show that support of gay rights is shallow, often shaky. There has already been a regression of people sayin they are comfortable seeing gay couples or same-sex romantic intimacy. Much of the support for gays is about civil rights or civic matters, and when it turns to actual same-sex intimacy, people become very queasy and uneasy. Court decisions and law can undo the cultural gains we have made as they set the standard that homosexuality is unacceptable, inferior, immoral. Many will follow the lead of conservative rule because they want to be on the winning team, including corporations and media.

by Anonymousreply 126June 28, 2018 3:22 PM

Sometimes I wonder if Nancy is really working for the Republicans. She couldn't be weaker or less ineffective if she tried. The Democratic party might as well not exist under her "leadership." Her whispery shaky voice is like nails on a chalkboard to me now.

by Anonymousreply 127June 28, 2018 3:27 PM

"what I fear is that most people are secretly not at all supportive of gay rights and not at all comfortable with gay people. I disagree, I think that most people generally are accepting, or at the very least, tolerant of LGB. It is the T nonsense that has people pulling back on their support. And your average every day American really does not differentiate LGB from T, they think we are all one and the same. So, when T's demand access to women's spaces, insert themselves into women's sports teams and take away rewards, scholarships, etc., behave obnoxiously and violently, that all reflects on the rest of us.

Also, the left has either purposely or inadvertently made T the face of the Democratic party. So again, when people think LGBT, they really think T because that's what's shoved in their faces every day.

Pelosi is worse than ever

by Anonymousreply 129June 28, 2018 3:29 PM

Pelosi is part of the non-opposition. So the future looks grim.

by Anonymousreply 130June 28, 2018 3:51 PM

Pelosi is wonderful.

by Anonymousreply 131June 29, 2018 12:57 AM

Says no one ever

by Anonymousreply 132June 29, 2018 12:57 AM

Pelosi wrangled through the ACA which was no easy feat. Reid did it in the Senate. She is very tough- behind the scenes.

It is time for her to step down. And Schumer. We do need new leadership.

It is so much easier for conservatives. They are easy to rile up and their red meat is much more cut and dry. The Dems are a big tent party and have so many moderates ( the GOP has NONE lets be honest). It is NOT easy for any Dem to rile up the whole party without turning off a good chunk. We have to find the right strategy/right message and perfect issue. Silver lining- this SC opening has galvanized the right but it was like gasoline for the left. I have seen some wishy washy moderate Dems sit straight up with that happening and are now freaking out.

Right here in the middle of the country, homophobia and racism is alive and well. Transphobia too, to a lesser extent. Right wing evangelicals , at least here in Koch kookooLand ,hate homosexuals even more than abortion Drs. It's sickening but people here have decent education and make decent income, but are hateful and judge mental. Toss up as to which is worse,Catholics or Evangelicals. I knew Trump would win . The attitude here was Obama = Satan the antichrist. Even a number of black people voted for Trump.. To them, Obama wasn't really black..
