Please explain to me the inexplicable popularity of this perky, wildly unappealing and unattractive midget.
She got a perfect 10 and won the gold medal, OP!
by Anonymous | reply 1 | June 24, 2018 6:08 PM |
Because through it all, she never stopped smiling!
by Anonymous | reply 2 | June 24, 2018 6:08 PM |
I hated her. I remember hoping she would fall on her ass on those vaults.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | June 24, 2018 6:09 PM |
There was no internet, so no Netflix or Amazon or easy-access porn as options to avoid boring Olympics.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | June 24, 2018 6:10 PM |
Her pussy stinks!!
by Anonymous | reply 5 | June 24, 2018 6:13 PM |
You mean Mary Lou Rotten!
by Anonymous | reply 6 | June 24, 2018 6:14 PM |
You know those stories about how the Olympic Village during the games is one giant fuckfest among the athletes? That all began with Mary Lou. In one night she polished off the Swedish and Venezuelan crew teams,
by Anonymous | reply 7 | June 24, 2018 6:15 PM |
She pisses her pants. In fact, I think she wears a diaper now.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | June 24, 2018 6:16 PM |
We did not have the Little Women, Little Couple and other dwarf shows on TV 24/7. If we wanted to gawk at a midget, we took what we could get.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | June 24, 2018 6:19 PM |
[quote] I hated her. I remember hoping she would fall on her ass on those vaults.
I love you, R3.
Katie Couric, before she became a "journalist", was the Mary Lou Retton of morning television. She was an annoying, chirping chipmunk too.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | June 24, 2018 6:19 PM |
I hate her smile.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | June 24, 2018 6:20 PM |

She's a dead ringer for Tony Danza in OP's pic!
by Anonymous | reply 14 | June 24, 2018 6:29 PM |
I always thought she looked dykey.

Reaganism, Morning in America.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | June 24, 2018 6:34 PM |
Here is Mary Lou, telling us more unneccesary details about her pussy and looking proud of it too!
by Anonymous | reply 17 | June 24, 2018 6:37 PM |
I thought her competitor, the Romanian girl, was much better.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | June 24, 2018 6:42 PM |
I must say that I'm shocked that someone with a pelvic floor that could hold up a semi-truck, has incontinence issues. WTF was the point of all of those years of training literally centered around that pelvic floor and you can't hold all of your piss?
by Anonymous | reply 19 | June 24, 2018 6:45 PM |
Mary LOO Rotten
by Anonymous | reply 20 | June 24, 2018 6:53 PM |
Mary! Lou Retton.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | June 24, 2018 6:55 PM |
She never would have won if the Soviets hadn't boycotted.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | June 24, 2018 7:01 PM |
Also, she was terrible on beam. She was majorly overscored and the judges didn't take all of the deductions from her routine that they should have.
Szabo was robbed!
by Anonymous | reply 23 | June 24, 2018 7:07 PM |
OP, that is how I feel about Kerri Strug!

That porn actor, Johnny Rapid, looks like her.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | June 24, 2018 7:49 PM |
R26, similar holes?
by Anonymous | reply 27 | June 24, 2018 7:51 PM |
She beat the Commies and won gold. (Well, not all of the Commies due to the boycott, but the ones who showed up).
by Anonymous | reply 28 | June 24, 2018 7:53 PM |
WHO???
by Anonymous | reply 29 | June 24, 2018 7:54 PM |
Mary Lou is unappealing, but Szabo? Please. Just another lame soot-covered Romanian girl that for some reason gay men love, even though she's a homophobe and from a hompohobic cunt-ry. I was better than both of them. And, stop ,saying "if the Russians would have shown up, so and so never would have won. To win, you gotta show up. You can't get credit if you didn't even participate.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | June 24, 2018 7:59 PM |
That woman looks frightful R32!
by Anonymous | reply 33 | June 24, 2018 8:27 PM |
Do her diapers take care of all incontinence matters?
by Anonymous | reply 34 | June 24, 2018 8:31 PM |
That woman is a gold-medal winning legendary gymnast who looks incredible.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | June 24, 2018 8:31 PM |
Kathy Johnson was such an old, ugly hag by 1984, I'm surprised she was even there!!!!
by Anonymous | reply 36 | June 24, 2018 8:33 PM |
Mary Lou had a line of sex toys - various dildos, butt plugs, and such with cutesy gymnastics related names - "Stick It," "Mount/Dismount," "Perfect 10 (Inches)," "Balance Beads."
by Anonymous | reply 37 | June 24, 2018 8:34 PM |
At least she didn't marry a fag, Nadia.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | June 24, 2018 8:35 PM |
MaryLou was the original Olympic Power Bottom.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | June 24, 2018 8:36 PM |
Yeah, and she was into fisting. She pulled a fisting train in the Olympic Village with all the hammer throwers and their big arms. Probably why she's incontinent. But, it started earlier with Bela and Marta.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | June 24, 2018 8:39 PM |
lmao R40 and eww at that visual!
by Anonymous | reply 41 | June 24, 2018 8:41 PM |

A low rent, American version of Nadia and Olga. Stumpy, inelegant. A mousy woman!
by Anonymous | reply 46 | June 24, 2018 9:14 PM |
I read Mary Lou's autobiography. Standard fare until chapter 4, which started, "After my first anal fissure ...." I was like "whoah, slow down there."

Quick, tell us the exact date Retton became incontinent!
by Anonymous | reply 48 | June 24, 2018 9:27 PM |
R9, so that explains why the balance beam was always when after Mary Lou got off it!
Like duh!
by Anonymous | reply 49 | June 24, 2018 9:30 PM |
She looks like a mannequin here. A plastic, smiling mannequin.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | June 24, 2018 9:32 PM |
Jesus Christ, if I didn't know who she was, I'd wonder which "Mommy blog" she runs.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | June 24, 2018 9:33 PM |
The smile is very disturbing and looks incredibly try-hard.
Oh, and R51, she doe shave a blog called Anal and Motherhood, My Story.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | June 24, 2018 9:35 PM |
Right on, R54. I hate when they would include Retton along with true gymnastics legends like Nadia and Olga.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | June 24, 2018 9:56 PM |
Can not explain it, OP. I hated her then and hate her now. She isn’t exactly butch, but she has a lesbian look about her.
She has that try-hard smile that is fake as fuck. At least the Slavic girls didn’t fake it. If and when they ever smiled, you know it was genuine.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | June 24, 2018 10:09 PM |
She's topless here, shaking her titties.
How can you not love this face?

R60, she looks sweaty and coked out in that photo. Mary SNORT retton?

Mary Loo doesn't care R67.. she'll endorse or star in anything for a few cheap bucks!!
by Anonymous | reply 68 | June 24, 2018 11:12 PM |
Kathy Johnson didn't get her 1st period until she was 25. Did she borrow some tampax from Mary Lou, who had already started menstruating at 14?
by Anonymous | reply 69 | June 24, 2018 11:56 PM |
Like Mary Lou cares what you bitches think!! She's an Olympic Champion, gold medalist, made tons of endorsement, and a successful wife and mother!
by Anonymous | reply 70 | June 25, 2018 1:35 AM |
I couldn't stand her, Mary Decker and Nancy Kerrigan. What they have in common that turns me off I'm not self aware enough to know.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | June 25, 2018 2:30 AM |
R70 = Mary Lou Retton!!
by Anonymous | reply 72 | June 25, 2018 2:32 AM |
I don't know who Mary Decker is, but Retton and Kerrigan have a "Tracy Flick" quality to them. Like a phony, All-American, Stepford perkiness that's so off-putting.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | June 25, 2018 2:33 AM |
The real 1984 Olympic All-Around champion. She was robbed. Compare this balance beam to Retton's!
by Anonymous | reply 74 | June 25, 2018 4:13 AM |
Mary Lewd Retton is also a RepubliKKKan, along with Kerri Strug. Here they are at the 2004 GOP convention.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | June 25, 2018 4:16 AM |
She looked like michael j fox
by Anonymous | reply 76 | June 25, 2018 4:17 AM |
R76, maybe they are the same person?
Have we ever seen Mary Lou and Michael J. Fox at the same place, at the same time? Hmmm?
by Anonymous | reply 77 | June 25, 2018 4:18 AM |
Retton posted a message of support for Larry Nassar very early on when the sex abuse scandal started slowly coming out. She’s loyal to belt and Marta and Dominique mocienau outed her for going to Washington to lobby Dianne Feinstein to kill a bill that would hold coaches responsible for not reporting abuse. When this happened all hell broke loose in the gymnastics community and retton locked down her social media pages.

Her kids are named: McKenna Lane Kelley, Shayla Rae Kelley, Emma Jean Kelley, Skyla Brae Kelley
How could she not be a Republican?

This is the funniest thread I've read on DL in a long time. I remember being in elementary school when Mary Lou Retton became popular, and a lot of girls started getting that short, pixie haircut.
by Anonymous | reply 87 | June 25, 2018 6:34 AM |
R47, does Mary Lou really have anal fissures?
by Anonymous | reply 88 | June 25, 2018 6:45 AM |
Yes R88. She says so in her autobiography. She is nothing if not an honest gal.
by Anonymous | reply 89 | June 25, 2018 7:44 AM |
Poor Mary Lou’s anus!
by Anonymous | reply 90 | June 25, 2018 7:52 AM |
R73 Kerrigan is more like the anti Retton. Not perky, introverted, not good at interviews and much more feminine. Retton came off as kind of a normal teenager next door. That's what people liked about her she was that nice acomplished girl every parent wished there daughter was. I was a teenager so she just reminded me of classmates who kind of annoyed me. The ones who were cheerleaders but had tons of school spirit.
by Anonymous | reply 91 | June 25, 2018 8:07 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 94 | June 25, 2018 9:40 AM |
R78, Mary Lou was such a Bela and Marta Karoyli ass kisser. Whenever other gymnasts would come forward and talk about abusive techniques while training with the karoylis, she would be the first one to come out in defense of them.
by Anonymous | reply 95 | June 25, 2018 9:55 AM |

You can really see the Italian in her now. Lots of Italians in that part of West Virginia where she was from. They came to work in the mines.
by Anonymous | reply 102 | June 25, 2018 3:33 PM |
She would be the type to chop off the vowel from her name, R102.
by Anonymous | reply 103 | June 25, 2018 3:35 PM |
R102, her family's real name is 'Rotunda', which they changed at some point after coming to the States.

Well, she is a rotund, little bitch.
Is her husband freakishly tall or is she just freakishly short?
by Anonymous | reply 105 | June 25, 2018 3:50 PM |
Her husband was star quarterback for University of Texas while I was a student there. He was FINE back then, quite the stud. Now he looks like a tired soccer dad.

Well can you imagine being married to this perky, shrill munchkin for almost three decades? That would prematurely age anyone!
by Anonymous | reply 107 | June 25, 2018 4:00 PM |
R107 Indeed. I have visions of the guy lying down with a hard on hoping for a quiet wank only to have his midget, grinning and brimming with energy ,burst into the room grab it and begin to pole dance and vault and practise her moves. This on top of having to plug the midget. Give the dude a break.
by Anonymous | reply 108 | June 25, 2018 4:06 PM |
Also, she birthed four daughters and not one single son for him.. Oh Good 'ol Mary Lou, fucking things up yet again!

by Anonymous | reply 110 | June 25, 2018 4:15 PM |
She was popular because fraus loved her. They probably still do. She is a 'Rated G' role model for the children. Now Mary Lou is a frau herself, always going on about her successful marriage and her kids. [html removed]
R108, that is a hilarious visual! Most likely true, too!

R108 you cracked me up!
by Anonymous | reply 113 | June 25, 2018 4:30 PM |
Here's another example of Mary Lou fucking things up. In the team competition, after one of her teammates dismounted from a successful uneven bars routine, she rushed onto the podium to congratulate her and hug her and of course make it all about herself. Because of this, the judges instituted a rule that athletes cannot be on the podium when they are not competing a routine. Four years later at the 1988 Olympics, one of the USA alternates was accidentally on the podium, and the judges took a deduction from the Team USA overall score. As a result of this deduction, Team USA was bumped from a bronze medal to 4th place. So essentially Mary Lou cost Team USA a bronze medal!
by Anonymous | reply 114 | June 25, 2018 4:36 PM |
^ Not as bad as being the alternate who ruined it.

But they were sure they’d have won against Retton if they’d been there.
by Anonymous | reply 122 | June 25, 2018 7:07 PM |
Let's be real. MLR is every gay man's fucking nightmare. She's got the head of a hawk with Kimura's disease and the body of a muscled eunuch dwarf. She is a Frau cubed and frankly, I am sleeping with the lights on tonight.

A demonic midget Frau descends upon Fire Island. One gay man after another awakes to find the evil dwarf flipping, somersaulting, and twisting on to their morning erection forcing penetration and conversion "therapy".
by Anonymous | reply 125 | June 25, 2018 7:46 PM |
The Russians would have wilted under the chants of USA USA in 84. Mary peaked during the Olympics. She beat the best Romanian who was probably the best in the world at the time. Mary for GOLD all the way. But I hate he politics. Wonder if she jumped off the GOP wagon with Dump?

by Anonymous | reply 128 | June 25, 2018 7:56 PM |
R126, ridiculous. I’m no fan of Russia currently, but anybody who knows anything about gymnastics knows that the Soviets were the best in the world in the 80s. This gymnast, Olga Mostepanova, would have likely won the gold. Can you really compare Mary Lou’s dumpy gymnastics to hers?
by Anonymous | reply 129 | June 25, 2018 7:58 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 143 | June 25, 2018 8:26 PM |
She did beat Szabo who would have definitely been in the running even with the commies but Szabo's fall was the reason that MLR was able to win. Even winning a silver in that era would have catapulted her in the zeitgeist. I do think if she hadn't won the AA, she would have won VT where she was miles ahead of everyone but the idea of an american winning 2 golds was too much for 1984

Bart Conner is a known former bathhouse power bottom who has seen more milky loads than a spermbank. Nadia is bearding for him in a mutual arrangement. He helped rehab her through her slutty Romanian hooker phase, and in turn he gets to appear “straight”

Her face is so weird, especially when she smiles.
by Anonymous | reply 150 | June 25, 2018 10:08 PM |
She has a sot of odd career for a top gymnast in that she never won any World Championships medals, or even competed at the World Championships. Her career was short. She probably honestly doesn't deserve to be on a list of the all-time greats, but having an Olympic AA gold seems to weigh heavily in her favor (even if it was a boycotted Olympics). She really was a phenomenon after her win. I actually don't blame her for not continuing very long after 1984. She was getting serious endorsement money and she could have only fucked her status up by competing in more Olympics and WCs. She wasn't going to win gold again, so quitting when she did everyone knows her from her gold medal in LA.

R151 it was pretty rare for atheletes to compete in more than one olympics back then. This was especially true of gymnasts. They girls peak in their teens, they are to old four years later. The IOC was a lot more stringent about being an amateur back then. Most atheletes couldn't afford to stay Olympic eligible for that long. Most did compete in the worlds after the Olympics. It was considered bad form not to finish the season.

It's actually considerably better than I imagined. No, not the lines of the Europeans, but still better. So much less combination tumbling back then. The only thing that stands out is that all of her flips are tuck, no layouts. But, again, while she was overscored, it's better than I thought.
by Anonymous | reply 165 | June 26, 2018 1:44 AM |
Szabo got a 9.35 for this horrible, archy bar routine with no swing and many, many leg separations. That's not counting the blown front somersault and the fall on the dismount.

Retton was one of the first to really popularize the beastly power tumbling/cheerleader style of gymnastics that I don’t care for, and which is frankly very common amongst American gymnasts (Zmeskal, Shawn Johnson). I can respect their athletic abilities, but Not my thing, and no I am not Russian...

by Anonymous | reply 170 | June 26, 2018 2:16 AM |
If there had been no boycott, the favorite likely would have been Maxi Gnauck. Ironically, Retton beat her in the Chunichi Cup and also beat Shushunova there but there was no compulsories. A lot of people don't give enough weight to the fear factor. Retton was a stud and the other girls knew it. When she was at a discipline, after they were introduced to the judges, she would run back to be the first one to take a warmup and she always was first. The competitor who was closest to her in style and athleticism was Shushunova.

[R171] Exactly! There is no telling what the Russians would have done at the 84 games. Their best could have easily stumbled or been rattled by the raucous USA crowd. Retton was on fire at these games- she peaked! The Romanians were no slouches and she beat their best. Fuck the Russians, they weren't there.
by Anonymous | reply 175 | June 26, 2018 5:36 AM |
It wasn't just the Russians who boycotted. It was most of the Eastern Block countries. The Chinese hadn't really gotten into international sports yet. The U.S. Had a lot less competition that year.
by Anonymous | reply 176 | June 26, 2018 5:48 AM |
The rah rah rah pro-American crowd was incredibly annoying, but nowhere near as loathsome as the foul Atlanta gymnastics crowd in 1996 who couldn't be bothered to applaud for world class gymnasts from other countries, and who were so loud applauding for American gymnasts that it drowned out other gymnast's floor exercise music.
by Anonymous | reply 177 | June 26, 2018 5:49 AM |
[R176] They had the second best team in the world competing. That was enough. As was previously stated, Retton beat two of the best Russians in other competitions prior so who knows what would have happened IF they didn't boycott. They did so FUCK THEM. We'll never know and nothing anyone says will change that. Retton won, might still have won with Russians or no Russians.

They can point their toes where it looks like the Peterson's blow poker. MARY! Ugh- MLR was great and won. She probably would have crushed the Russians in 84 had they showed up but WE'LL NEVER KNOW! Gymnastics is about the athletic and artistic. The Commies couldn't keep up (they had terrible nutrition) so they and their fraus clung to artistry. Well, fuck them.

Skills/tricks make gymnastics compelling. Save artistry for art shows or dance performances or any number of true art forms. All artistry does in sports is make it more subjective that it needs to be. Judged sports are bad enough, but sports judged on subjective criteria are worse. I get it - people like long lines and light movement and "artistic" hand movements, etc. Go see the ballet, it's full of that.

Mid 90's saw her on tour with Olga and Nadia and she was embarrassing. She did a floor routine which consisted of no somersaults, but she ROLLED around and pointed her feet in the air, then went on her side and did the same. She got a SO from the crowd though. Absurd. At least we knew Olga was like 50 and couldn't do much. The beam routine she did was fascinating. She walked up to it, kissed it, caressed it, held on to it but never actually mounted it.

by Anonymous | reply 258 | July 25, 2018 12:58 PM |
Well, the soviet boycott saved her ass. Her victory against Szabo was dubious but there's no way she could defeat Natalia Yurchenko or Olga Mostepanova (who recieved 4 perfect 10 on an event that year).
She won the first gold on AA for the USA but the first great american gymnast was Shannon Miller (Kin Zmeskal gold at the world championships was a robbery, the great Svetlana Boginskaya deserved that gold and if the competition wasn't in the USA she would be the winner)

by Anonymous | reply 260 | July 25, 2018 1:04 PM |
R259, she already beat Yurchenko and Shushunova who was considered the favorite going into the Olympics. Both were similar athletics first, artistry second athletes the way Retton was. Mostepanova was a beautiful gymnast but she had the same problems as Ilienko with lack of lower body strength and problems with lift and spring. Those tens she got at the friendship games were even more dubious than the scores at the Olympics. Despite her artistry, Mostepanova was never really a crowd pleaser because of her somewhat aloof personality. If there was someone who could have stolen Retton's thunder with charisma and gymnastics, it would have been Omelianchik.
I don't think even Retton in LA could have competed with this kind of audience pleasing performance.
by Anonymous | reply 261 | July 25, 2018 5:28 PM |
She beat Yurchenko at the American Cup, when Yurchenko asked to have the upper bar raised and was refused, not only did she have problems because she was not allowed to adjust the bar, but so did Kathy Johnson. Also, it was March, the Soviets didn't peak in March. Shushunova was NOT Shushunova at that time and if you looked at her at the 1983 Chunichi Cup, where Retton defeated her, you could see that.
Have you not seen Mostepanova's routines from Olomouc there on Youtube and whatever you think about whether they deserved the scores they received, across all four apparatus they were way ahead of Retton. Whether or not she would've appealed to the crowd is irrelevent, especially at an event in the U.S. Retton and the U.S. girls were the only ones who were going to get the crowd's attention. Doesn't mean she wouldn't have beaten MLR.
Omelianchik was alternate for the Olomouc team, which was essentially the USSR's Olympic team, so it's doubtful she would have even competed.
by Anonymous | reply 262 | July 25, 2018 6:00 PM |
Simona Pauca should have won!!!
by Anonymous | reply 263 | July 25, 2018 6:20 PM |
R252, crowd appeal is as big an aspect of gymnastics as performance. It is definitely NOT irrelevant. Why do you think Davydova and Retton won? I've been a fan of Mostepanova but she fell down too heavily on the artistic side when gymnastics was going to the athletic side. Artistically they were ahead of Retton on Beam and Bars but way behind on the tumbling aspects. As for Shushnova, she had already won the Spartakiad over Yurchenko at that time so she was absolutely the Shushunova of 85. She had a minor injury which prevented her from winning the Spartakiad in 84. Yurchenko's fall from the bars followed her 9.7 on vault compared to Retton's 9.95.
Regardless, competition is how we prove champions. Retton was able to psych other gymnasts out with her athleticism during warmups and that was as much a part of her story as anything.
by Anonymous | reply 264 | July 25, 2018 6:48 PM |
In an non-boycotted 84 Olympics, I would have made Maxi Gnauck of East Germany the favorite for AA.
by Anonymous | reply 265 | July 25, 2018 7:01 PM |
R261:Omelianchik was fantastic, but she and Shushunova were 14 in 1984. Gnauck was robbed in Moscow and probably would be robbed in LA too (both Gnauk and Commaneci were better than Davydova) In my opinion Szabo was better than Retton and if the Olympics were in any other country she would be the winner
by Anonymous | reply 266 | July 25, 2018 7:17 PM |
R266, Bicherova was 13 when she won the World Championships and the ages of many of the Romanians were in question in 84 like Cutina and Pauca. It was said that Agache was pushed forth in 81 as well with a falsified age.
Szabo might have been better but this bars routine got a 9.35, which is a ridiculously high score. Watch her complete stoppage of swing after both flight elements, her legs come apart on the 1 1/2 to say nothing of her fall on her dismount.
by Anonymous | reply 267 | July 25, 2018 9:18 PM |
Silivas was other gymnast whose age was into question during the 80's but the truth is she looked extremely young in the 85 world championships

by Anonymous | reply 270 | July 25, 2018 9:28 PM |
I also though Dobre's display in 1987 was the finest combination of artistry and athleticism on all four disciplines. What a tragedy she had an injury so in 1988 she was a shadow of herself.
by Anonymous | reply 271 | July 25, 2018 9:41 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 273 | July 25, 2018 10:47 PM |
Mostepanova was also very very streaky and unreliable in competition. With the exception of the Alternative Games, she has no other AA titles and in 1985, her own coach pulled her from the AA competition because he said she was psychologically unready but many in the gymnastics community knew it was because Baraksanova had a better chance at a medal with Omelianchik and Shushunova.
R273, a double layout and a laid out Sook are as artistic as any move in gymnastics when done the way Retton did it. Nonetheless, it's still a sport so athleticism trumps artistry.

Get real, R274, MLR BARELY beat Szabo who was counting a fall, there's no way she was going to beat Mostepanova, who was 2nd at Worlds ahead of Szabo the previous year. And while you argue about her being weak in the legs that didn't stop her from doing a terrific full-in (which Retton really struggled to land consistently) on FX and getting a ten on Vault at '83 Worlds, not to metion perfect form, execution and extension. Retton was a two event gymnast, Mostepanova was an all-around gymnast.
by Anonymous | reply 278 | July 26, 2018 10:32 AM |
R278, you get real. Mostepanova was a weak competitor which is proven by her lack of AA wins and her complete lack of AA wins outside of Russia. Her bars work was complete with archy giant swings (a holdover from the Shaposhikova, Filatova era), poor extension on her bar transitions and she had a habit of hitting her left leg on the bar during her Tkachev, which she did not only in Olomouc but also the previous WC in Budapest. For her to have achieved a 10 with her lack of technique and strength to tie with Maxi Gnauck tells you pretty much all you need to know about the scoring in that competition. And leg strength is what caused her to do faults with no height or distance. To her credit, unlike Bicherova, on her Cuervo, she kept her legs together in the preflight but Bicherova got much further and higher and also landed much straighter. I have absolutely no criticism of her on beam where she was masterful but again, her tumbling on floor was detrimental to her beautiful dance and musicality.
Here is her bars performance in Olomouc which got a 9.75, which seems generous. Even without the hit on the bars, this is NOT a 10. Also note the dead hang she comes to after her blown back sommie transfer.
by Anonymous | reply 279 | July 26, 2018 6:17 PM |
And although she lacked consistency in her full-ins as well, double back tumbling is not about lift, it's about rotation. But here is her Olomouc 10 where she struggles on her full-in.

Retton absolutely would have won the AA in 84 with a non boycott. She peaked at those games, already defeated those Russian whores, and she knew how to psyche out an opponent.
I think Retton would have been even more on had the Russians attended. She thrived on that competitiveness.
However, we can play the "what if" game all day but Retton DID win the AA.

Sorry but i doubt it, the soviets were unbeatable during those years, with the exception of Nadia Comanecci (and Mary Lou was not Nadia but any means). They had an amazing team (Russia never was a shadow of their former self as soviet union in gymnastics).
Mary Lou was a very current gymnast like Shushunova, both big tumblers like today's gymnastics (even Shushu was not considered artistic back in the day she is miles better in artistry than 99% of current gymnasts) but in the 80's aristry was very important, and american gymnast never were that good in that department (Shannon Miller was the first american who really could compete as equal with the soviets)
by Anonymous | reply 286 | July 26, 2018 8:35 PM |
Retton already beat the Soviets in various Cups and Retton had not peaked yet. Retton would have won 84 regardless. I know that triggers the fuck out of some of you but it is what it is. Retton would have won. It would have been a race for Silver for the Soviets and Romanians.

by Anonymous | reply 295 | July 27, 2018 10:25 AM |
R 293: In this type of cases you don't need Russian bots at all. A lot of gymnastics fans are not very fond of american style of gymnastics, and american gymnasts loved by more traditional fans are very few (Shannon Miller, Nastia Liukin).
Right now the USA has the best team by far and the new code works in favour of american gymnastics, but there are still a lot of people who think Komova was better than Weaber and Douglas, for example.
I'm not buying conspirancy theories specially when someone like Paseka with that incredibly poor technique (i know she was way better younger) is able to be vault champion, but the truth is american gymnast tend to be overscored, and i'm not talking about Biles (wich in my opinion is the best right now) but Raisman was incredibly overscored at Olympics
by Anonymous | reply 296 | July 27, 2018 12:12 PM |
R296, that's how the sport evolves. There were those who argued that the old system favored Communist countries, especially with compulsories. Once Communism fell, those athletes were no longer subsidized and didn't have the ability to work on all those routines. The code of points always favored countries that were able to put more time and money into practice.
Traditional fans are like ballet fans in that they're a dying breed. Athleticism can be judged, artistry can't. Artistic competition is an incompatible phrase and led to numerous judging problems. Someone does a flawed double with a full and you can still appreciate the effort. Someone else does a perfect double twist but there's less achievement.
by Anonymous | reply 297 | July 27, 2018 5:13 PM |
MLR is a big republican & a fan of Rat Robertson.
She's appeared on the 700 Club numerous times OP.
The right wing patriot types love her as "America's sweetheart".
by Anonymous | reply 299 | July 27, 2018 9:21 PM |
R297: I agree, but in my opinion the new code needs to be corrected. If you are from a big country your execution scores are disproportionally higher than gymnasts from other countries.
And difficult elements shouldn't be rewarded if the execution is poor.
The truth is the competition has way less drama right now, you can fail big time and get a medal. in 2007 Vanessa Ferrari and Jade Barbosa failed big time, the italian on uneven bars and the brazilian on floor and both scored a bronze. Simone Biles won gold with a big advantage even with a big fail on balance beam and a lackluster floor. One thing is giving a big execution score to the Biles' Amanar wich is very well executed and other very different give a big score the Raismann's Amanar wich is very poor (and her form is really bad).
Artistry is very difficult to evaluate, for some people it's only looking like a ballerina, but the truth is floor exercises are incredibly boring today in comparision with the 80's. They are very difficult but very forgettable.
I think this years world championships are going to be a bloodbath. USA has a great team but given the teams selected for Europeans, Russia is going to follow Romanian's path. For american's gymnast sucked the change to the two gymnasts in AA instead of three because right now i think it could be very possible they get gold, silver and bronze

r300
what the fuck are you talking about? When would you EVER call Simone fucking BIles lackluster on FX??
by Anonymous | reply 301 | July 27, 2018 10:21 PM |
R301: In 2015 she was very very very very far from her best. That floor was not up to her standards by any means (i'm talking about her AA floor). I don't know if she got nervous after that bad balance beam routine, but she was very far from her usual performance. It doesn't matter because she had a big advantage anyway
by Anonymous | reply 302 | July 27, 2018 10:24 PM |
I think Nadia hit the point on the head when she said gymnastics gave away its trademark by eliminating the 10.0. Now, the scoring is so convoluted that it's very difficult for the average viewer to understand. That in itself is a turnoff.
Floor exercises began going downhill with the fall of Communism as those choreographers and musicians had somewhere to finally go instead of being forced to do routines for anorexic 13 yos. Even Ludmilla ("I dedicate my Gold Medal to cementing communism") Tourischeva said that her generation never dreamed of the moves that are being done and it's made the sport more exciting. I think something like beam has not only gotten more athletic, it's gotten more artistic with the Chinese bringing in elements of dance and flexibility that are amazingly appealing to the audiences.
by Anonymous | reply 303 | July 27, 2018 10:27 PM |
R303: In my opinion the floor routines are just boring. You don't have someone like Korkhina to bring drama to her routine. Someone who chose carefully the music and combine it with tumbling. Most routines are very similar, the same skills again and again, the same saltos and piruettes, in some cases very difficult but not beautiful to watch, wolf turns are horrid (and apart of Biles nobody seems to execute them well).
On UB or BB there's some repetition too, but there are always gymnasts that bring something different.
Wich is obvious is that european countries lost their potential in recent years. Some countries like GS or Italy are getting better but the tradional dominat countries like Russia and Romania are on their way down

R300, the drama at this year's NCAA championships was off the chart. Peng Peng Lee needed a 9.975 for UCLA to win and she got a 10.0 allowing the Bruins to beat defending champions Oklahoma. The beam score was the highest in NCAA finals history and it included a fall from Madison Kocian.
PS, Mary Lou's daughter is on LSU who finished fourth. Too bad it wasn't LSU in second so she could feel what it's like to be on the other side of a 10.0.
by Anonymous | reply 306 | July 27, 2018 10:40 PM |
I do agree I hate seeing someone give an OK performance, even having a fall or huge landing errors and receive a big score.
However, it is gymnastics so it should be about athleticism not so much artistry but I do want more artistry in the game.
Is it true Shannon Miller was the first US gymnast the Ruskies actually respected? Shannon was fierce but they respected MLR and they certainly respected Kim Zmeskal but maybe not to the extent they did Shannon. Shannon actually trained with Russians for a bit in 1990.
by Anonymous | reply 307 | July 27, 2018 10:55 PM |
R307: I suppose it was different there, but in european press Kim Zmerskal win on 1991 was not well recieved. There were a good bunch of articles saying Boginskaya was robbed (in gymnastics being the host country generally means some overscoring for the local gymnasts). The fact that Zmeskal failed big time at the Olympics didn't help her cause as a legitimate world champion (of course Boginskaya failed in her last apparatus too, but she end higher and she had a well earned reputation by then).
MLR was a thing of 1984, i suppose if she were competitive more years it would be different but she won the Olympics on a year where the biggest time at the time didn't compete, and that's all. And Olympic gold is an olympic gold but being a local gymnast and without any world championships great results i doubt nobody (outside of the USA) thinks on her when they think on american great gymnasts
by Anonymous | reply 308 | July 27, 2018 11:03 PM |
R308 Well they hated Americans in most of gymnastics because they were ascendant and the others were the opposite. They saw Zmeskal and Miller coming for them. I think Shannon said in her book the Russian and Romanians made remarks in the press about her in 1991 saying she was the real threat.
by Anonymous | reply 309 | July 27, 2018 11:10 PM |
R309: I wouldn't be surprised. I remember the bitchy comments about Nadia Comanecci from Olga Korbut and Nelly Kim, saying that Nadia won because she was overscored because they wanted the soviets be defeated when the truth is Nadia was way better than them, and she even deserved better in the floor final.
I think Zmeskal was looked like a new MLR, a big tumbler and nothing more, Miller was a totally different story, she was able to compete against them with the same weapons. The truth is Gutsu was way ahead of her time, her exercises are difficult even for today standards and when she was on she was unbeatable. But she was a shooting star. Miller was the dominant gymnast for the following years, even when she was a bit lucky in 2003 and 2004. In 2003 she was clearly the best gymnast but she underperformed a bit in the AA final and Dominique Dawes was on the verge of beating her. In 2004 Milosovici was the favourite, but Miller was very good that day (Dawes failed again on vault when she had a change to win or at least take a medal). It was a pity that she failed on floor on the Atlanta Olympics. I really liked Shannon, probably my fave american gymnast (clearly my fave from the old scoring system)
by Anonymous | reply 310 | July 27, 2018 11:21 PM |
R310 Well Shannon was injured or sick in 93 and 94 so even with that, she still won. Speaks to how good she was. There is always a bit of luck in the sport. Shannon was plagued with injuries right up to and during Atlanta. I think she could have and would have won the AA that year if she was completely healthy.
She should have won over Guitsu. Shannon clearly had a 10 on her first vault.

Let me be clear- I stan for MLR but by no means agree with her abhorrent political views. Did she support Trump? I need receipts. by Anonymous | reply 312 | July 28, 2018 2:20 AM |
A lot of gymnasts have fucked up politics. MLR went with Steve Penny to Dianne Feinstein trying to get her to drop a bill requiring governing bodies to immediately report child and sex abuse allegations to authorities. Retton was correctly blasted and has gone somewhat undercover since everything exploded. Peter Vidmar resigned from the USOC because of his opposition to same sex marriage.

Saw Mary Lou on Regis Philbin after the Ols and he grilled her about the Russians not being there and suggested she maybe had it easier because of that. Regis asked if she was training for that and she told him she was going to be doing commercials and a tv special and start acting classes in New York and her training would have to fit in that.

It would have been impossible for Retton to win the AA with a weak team. She should have been happy Dianne Durham switched gyms and injured herself before returning to Karolyis because she regularly beat her. A Retton/Durham led team would have been very strong.

Saw Nadia, Olga and Mary Lou on tour in 94. Nadia was great and in shape. Olga was old looking and tentative. She would cry after every routine and someone would rush out with a bouquet of flowers for her. She knew how to extend a bow and she got more applause the more she seemed pathetic. Mary Lou wore a skimpy t-shirt that was too too tiny for her ball shaped body. She did nothing difficult. She rolled around on the mat and didn't go in the air at all to do somersaults or the like. The crowd didn't care and she must have paid people in the crowd to shout 'we love you Mary Lou!' - her smile beamed and you could tell she loved the reaction of her fans. The place was sold out (Nashville).

Well there's a rumour that Simone and the new girls don't get along that well. There was supposed bitchy twitter comments between her and Hurd.
Nothing spice things up like a good rivaldry. Anyway Simone is miles better than anyone right now. Given the low quality of the last european championships they only thing that could be a threat for Simone's victory is herself failing big time and she is a very confident gymnast (even failing like in 2015 i don't think anybody could be a real threat).
The new code rewards difficulty and it's more accurate but make things a lot more predictable
by Anonymous | reply 324 | August 12, 2018 8:26 PM |
Simone burst onto the scene right after an Olympics (2012), then went on to win 3 World AA Championships before 2016. She was such an overwhelming favorite for AA Gold at the Rio Olympics that I thought the pressure might get to her. I'm surprised she's continuing to be honest.
by Anonymous | reply 325 | August 12, 2018 8:51 PM |
R325: She is very secure of herself. Watching gymnastic sometimes is hard, you fear for their safety all the time, and cross fingers they don't fail, but with Simone i just don't have any fear. She is human, so she makes mistakes, but they are so few that i always get the impression she is going to nail her performance.
She is by far the best gymnast of the new era (it's very difficult to compare this era with the perfect 10 era because the scoring system changed everything). I think she came back because she knows she can match Larissa Latynina and won another AA gold at Tokio. She opens her tumbling on floor with a Moors and ends with a Silivas which is totally insane (but i hope she changes the music, i don't like it at all),
by Anonymous | reply 326 | August 12, 2018 9:18 PM |
R326, Simone is obviously a way greater gymnast but I felt the exact same way when I watched Retton. You weren't scared for her because of her competitive spirit.
by Anonymous | reply 327 | August 12, 2018 9:21 PM |
R327: Yes, Simone is a very american gymnast (not like MIller or Liukin whom had a more european style). Detractors always say she has no artistry, but in my opinion what she doesn't have is the ballerina choreos (just doesn't fit her body type), but generally her fx routines fit her personality, they are upbeat and funny.
I would love to watch a gymnast given Simone a good fight for the sake of a tight competition, but i don't think it'll be in this world championships (or anytime soon)

What I liked about Shannon Miller is how consistent she was. I remember she would often nail her landings which was refreshing for an American gymnast at the time. If not for injuries from 95-96, I think she would have dominated and won her AA gold. Sucks she led 1/2 through the AA and had a subpar floor and vault. She was very injured but gave it her best. A healthy Shannon would have likely won a AA gold IMO.

Taking an off year is something even positive when you were competing for a good while, but not when you were in your first year of competition. She lost a big opportunity of doing great in the last world championships (without Simone).
And she is relying too much in her ability of making a come back. With the new rules you better be a great AA competitor with at least one great apparatus. Laurie never competed AA on a big event.
I know Gaby and Aly were able to make successful comebacks but they had a lot more experience. Gaby retiring after a year of competition didn't make that sense either but at least she was an olympic champion in AA

r359 in 93, even with the beam error, she was years ahead of everyone especially with the former soviets being so clueless and lost
in 94, no way in hell should Milo have won with her shitty bars and beam! Kotchevkova was excellent in 94 but only had a 9.9 VT, I still think Miller was the best in 94 though, Dina should have beat Milo though

R366: Oh Mary Lou, but there's so little to talk about you, you were basically a one hit wonder and without all the soviets that was a little insipid.
And yes she'll never be AA olympic champion but she was second in the best olympic final ever, a lot of amazing gymnasts in that final.
She was clearly the best gymnast in the world in 1993 and even in a not so great day she was the best in the final (Dawes failing big time on vault help her for sure). She was not the best in 1994, but it was not her fault she was solid while the others fail. Hey Podkopayeva won the worlds and the olympics that way.
And she is the american gymnasts that people who hate american gymnastics (big tumbling with no grace) love

The 1996 Olympic AA Final was much more competitive, with better AA gymnasts.

R370: Ha ha ha haa ha . Good one.
Are you talking of the olympics where everybody fail but Lilia? Come on, Dawes and Miller were in the lead before failing big time on floor.
Atlanta is not even close to Barcelona or Seoul
by Anonymous | reply 371 | August 26, 2018 2:18 PM |
There were legitimately around 12 gymnasts who could have medaled in the AA in Atlanta.
Who were the great AA threats in 92? Fat ass Zmeskal? Boginskaya past her prime?
by Anonymous | reply 372 | August 26, 2018 2:22 PM |
R372: Maybe the ridiculous theatrics of the team final are bluring your judgement but the AA final was not exactly that good, in fact almost all favourites failed more or less.
And by the way past her prime Boginskaya was only 0.3 of gold, and with that kind of performance she probably would have won in Atlanta (and got a medal for sure)

Did I ever say the 1996 AA final ended up being great, muffintop?
No, I did not. I just said that it was an exceptionally deep field of athletes, at least 12 of whom could have possibly medaled depending on how things played out.

by Anonymous | reply 376 | August 26, 2018 8:02 PM |
R376: You first, please. It would be very interesting to know who were the 12 wonders of 1996
And i still think there's a big difference in quality between both Olympics. Almost everyone except Podkopayeva and the always solid (but incredibly boring) Gogean didn't had flaws. The fact that a gymnast who was very far from her peak like Amanar got a bronze speaks clearly of how many favourites failed
by Anonymous | reply 377 | August 26, 2018 8:57 PM |
Poor Shannon hater. This thing is frantic to lessen Shannon's achievements.
In sports, people fail all the time. It is who doesn't fail at that particular meet that matters. Shannon clearly dominated 92-94. 93-94 She was sick and/or hurt yet still won the AA. She was well on her way to winning the AA in 96 (again she was not 100%) when she faltered on the floor. But that's the way the ball bounces. She fought through so much pain to consistently win.
Her 92 AA vaults were perfection and the first one was clearly a 10.

You are stupid and insane to think Shannon was "well on her way to winning the AA in 96." Either that, or you're Shannon's [notorious] mother. Or that "Shanfan" chick who had that creepy lesbionic website dedicated to her.
The judges would have handed the title to Mo Huilan, Dawes, Amanar, Podkopayeva, hell even Khorkina before Miller even got a whiff of the gold.

Amanar was at her peak watchability in 96. Unless you think she was greater during her later years, with that increasing abortion of a bar routine.

Marcia Frederick has proposed a class action suit against her former gym owners Muriel Grossfeld and George Ward. In, I'm sure, a completely unrelated incident, one week after hearing about the lawsuit, Grossfeld had a massive stroke. Having dealt with Grossfeld, she's a pious sanctimonious fraud who rode Frederick's gold medal to her own glory. She was always talking about doing things the right way but she was caught and the curtain was coming down on her. Being revealed as an enabler and hypocrite was too much for her massive ego to take.

I know Simone Biles is one of the best gymnasts of all time and the best by far from the new era (with the new score system) but i would love someone will be able to challenge her. Knowing she will win (easily) made the next world championship way less interesting. Right now the only interest it's to watch who will be the second american in the AA competition (McCusker or Hurd) and who will be the third in the podium (my bet is Murakami)

Completely incorrect. Until 1992, Word Championships were not held every year. In the 70s they were held every four years, and in the 1980s they were held every other year, and is never held during an Olympic year (there have been less than a handful of occasions when they have held Apparatus finals only, and those were done prior to the Olympics).

[quote]Is it true Shannon Miller was the first US gymnast the Ruskies actually respected? Shannon was fierce but they respected MLR and they certainly respected Kim Zmeskal but maybe not to the extent they did Shannon. Shannon actually trained with Russians for a bit in 1990.
No and no.
Miller was not, "respected," by the Russians any more than Zmeskal or Retton. She also didn't train "with" the Russians. She went to a camp in Russia.. she did not train WITH them.
Also, she wasn't the first "true great American gymnast." In order to be that, she would have needed to not cheat her way on to two Olympic squads.
by Anonymous | reply 426 | August 20, 2020 2:16 AM |
[quote]I suppose it was different there, but in european press Kim Zmerskal win on 1991 was not well recieved.
This actually wasn't true. There were a few articles saying Boginskaya was robbed, but it wasn't as big of a deal as that. Further, people forget that she went back to Europe and snatched two more World Titles with all the big names present to compete.

[quote]Well Shannon was injured or sick in 93 and 94 so even with that, she still won. Speaks to how good she was. There is always a bit of luck in the sport. Shannon was plagued with injuries right up to and during Atlanta. I think she could have and would have won the AA that year if she was completely healthy. She should have won over Guitsu. Shannon clearly had a 10 on her first vault.
Shannon coasted on her name after 93. And people often forget how over scored on bars and beam she was when the argument is made over who should have won.

by Anonymous | reply 445 | August 20, 2020 5:54 AM |
R445 that's exactly why people like Simone have been able to do such amazing things on Floor and Vault that they never would have been able to do if they were competing in the early 90s. That's why you haven't seen that much innovation on bars or beam, since the equipment on those events haven't really changed.
More impressive is if you look at the skills someone like Gutsu was doing back in 91-92 and realize those skills are still being competed and still considered difficult.
by Anonymous | reply 446 | August 20, 2020 5:57 AM |
The one thing I love about Shannon is how she's sort of, if not unapologetic, then unaware, narcissist.
She manages to make everything about her, and I seriously love it.
If it's, Olympic Day, then she reasonably posts about the success she had at her first Olympics.
If Simone Biles wins breaks another record by winning an event, she congratulates her by posting a photo of herself on the podium talking about how it reminds her of when she won her first Nationals.
If it's International Ice Cream day, she'll post a photo of herself on Beam and talk about how she remembers winning Gold and celebrating with a cone after!
It's hilarious.

by Anonymous | reply 451 | August 20, 2020 6:06 AM |
R448, yes. Gutsu and Miller both did Full-Twisting Double Backs as their beam dismounts. The difference was, Miller did hers out of a round off and Gutsu did hers from three back handsprings, out of a standing position.
Gutsu's technical difficulty was actually really phenomenal and I'd argue more impressive than Biles, considering the era and equipment that was being used. The fact that Gutsu's routines / elements were still considered difficult, and still being performed, more than twenty years after she competed is phenomenal.
Also amazing to think about is how her routines were so difficult in 92 and those were watered down. Prior to Barcelona she had been competing a DTY on vault and on floor she had been dismounting with a double layout.

Yes, but had it been any other gymnast the score would have been lower.
However, for an even more ridiculous score go watch Bontas' compulsory beam from 92. She barely stays on and manages a 9.9. Talk about favors.
by Anonymous | reply 454 | August 20, 2020 5:37 PM |
R452, I always liked Gutsu's split-leg double layout on floor. I don't know if she originated it, but it was a cool skill that you don't see often anymore.
by Anonymous | reply 455 | August 20, 2020 8:16 PM |
R455 she claims to have invented it by mistake. She was doing her normal double layout and accidentally did the splits. However, I don't believe it was ever named after her. Neither was the standing full back tuck on beam. She claims to be the first to do that as well, but I remember reading somewhere that another gymnast had done it in the mid-80s.
There is one collegiate gymnast that does the split double layout. I don't remember who. While I thought it was cool that Gutsu did it, the problem was, she never landed it cleanly.
by Anonymous | reply 456 | August 20, 2020 8:24 PM |
Speaking of Gutsu, someone did a breakdown of her 1992 Beam Routine and calculated what its value would be in today's CoP . Because the codes are different, she'd not have much of a score because she's missing one required element, a front acrobatic series. So if she were to take her exact same routine and simply add an aerial front walk over to the routine, her routine would be worth a 6.0. making it one of the most difficult beam sets being competed... TWENTY EIGHT years after she competed it.
That says everything about how far advanced she was and I'd personally consider her more remarkable than Biles.
by Anonymous | reply 457 | August 20, 2020 8:33 PM |
R457, I've always liked Gutsu and I'm glad she won the AA. I know she received lots of criticism before for not being the typical Soviet gymnast regarding her form and elegance, but compared to routines nowadays, she might as well have been a ballerina.
Gymnastics has become much more difficult to watch, which I suspect is why a lot of these threads end up becoming discussion about '80s/'90s gymnastics instead.

by Anonymous | reply 461 | August 20, 2020 9:26 PM |
R460 yes, because she doesn't have the required front acrobatic skill. All she'd need to do is add an aerial walk over and she'd get the .3 for that skill making it a 6.0 value.

by Anonymous | reply 464 | August 20, 2020 9:44 PM |
She does not have a front aerial skill at all in that routine. If she added one it would make her score valued at 6.0 as long as she didn't lose any connection.
by Anonymous | reply 465 | August 20, 2020 10:09 PM |
Gutsu that good? No. Her fan boys are hysterical. She barely beat Miller whom you idiots call so-so. Shouldn’t have been in the all around. Not many other titles. She was doing hard stuff but couldn’t be consistent which means she couldn’t do hard stuff. She fell or her scores weren’t high enough to get those titles. Gutsu was so overrated and wilted under her too demanding routines.

She wishes, R477. MLR barely walked on the beam.
And the only person who has ever smashed their pussy on beam and then rubbed her clit after on National TV.. is the one and only, gymnastics wonder, Amanda Borden.

The US won zero medals in the 1983 and 1985 world championships so no, they would probably not done as well if the Russian block were present in LA. MLR might have won a medal but the Russians and East Germans would have taken the rest along with the Romanians.

Miller was best. Period. Russian trolls have invaded because, we’ll, their best days were over gymnasts. Miller was solid on vault. She did 2 perfect vaults in the 92 Individual all around. She had solid floor and was a beam specialist. Suck it Russian queens.

Fact that most would be surprised to learn... Boginskaya was the second female gymnast to do a double twisting double back on floor. She did it back in 1985, withoit benefit of springs in the floor like gymnasts have today.

Dawes was a rather heartbreaking gymnast to be a fan of. She had the goods to win multiple AA titles, but just had that mental block. She always pulled through for the team though.

by Anonymous | reply 525 | August 24, 2020 9:18 PM |
Elena is bitter that Shanon withdrew to save her reputation of sucking at vault?
That makes a lot of sense..... if your scrunchie is pulled too tight.
by Anonymous | reply 526 | August 24, 2020 9:34 PM |
Best Shannon Miller performance at '93 Worlds below!
In all seriousness, Nunno claimed the reason for Miller's wretched beam was because she was feeling sick. But if she was feeling sick, why didn't she withdraw and let the alternate gymnast take her EF spot? Just another example of Nunno/Miller being selfish.
by Anonymous | reply 527 | August 24, 2020 10:27 PM |
R527 especially since she was capable of withdrawing for the vault finals.
by Anonymous | reply 528 | August 24, 2020 10:43 PM |

It’s crazy they gave perfect 10s when people hopped on the landing as Nadia, Mary Lou, and Szabo did. I do think Mary Lou would’ve won the Gold with the Russians there. She thrived on the competition and was peaking in summer ‘84.
by Anonymous | reply 532 | May 31, 2021 2:34 AM |
Hopefully this response coming from me is self-evident!
by Anonymous | reply 533 | May 31, 2021 2:58 AM |
It depends on what the COP was like back then though. A slide on a dismount might not have been considered a deduction.
What's crazy to me is that they haven't changed the code to make an out of bounds or a fall have a bigger deduction with the new point system. The fact that it's still only a tenth of a point to step out of bounds, the same as it was in the 80s, is ridiculous.
Deductions for falls and steps out of bounds should be calculated as a percentage of the total score, ie, a step out is a deduction of 10% off your score, a fall is a 30% deduction, etc. There needs to be higher stakes.
If Biles' claims that the FIG hates her so much are true, they should have already adopted this. With as many times as she goes out of bounds she'd never have won a title!
by Anonymous | reply 534 | May 31, 2021 9:36 PM |
R534 Not true. She’d change her routine and easily win.
by Anonymous | reply 535 | May 31, 2021 9:43 PM |
Not likely. Simone dominates by her difficulty.. however she has shown she consistently goes out of bounds doing those moves. If she were severely deducted for the out of bounds, she'd have to decrease the difficulty, which would in turn make it so it was easier for her competitors to have routines closer to the same value.
But regardless, the point is, the penalty should have been consistent to the rules that were set up in previous decades. No one should be able to fall on a routine and still medal just because their value is so high.
by Anonymous | reply 536 | June 1, 2021 12:48 AM |
Simone is so far above the others on other events except uneven bars it wouldn’t matter. She’s great.
by Anonymous | reply 537 | June 1, 2021 12:50 AM |
I'm 97.2% sure that Simone has had the highest execution in most of her wins(minus the 18 AA where she di win due to her difficulty)
by Anonymous | reply 538 | June 1, 2021 1:10 AM |
That is true, however it would tighten up the competition and it would make it really difficult for someone to still win if they were superior on all other events and came to floor and went out of bounds once (or twice) or with a fall, and still win (As Simone recently did at the US Classic)... if she had incurred a 10% and 30% deduction.
by Anonymous | reply 539 | June 1, 2021 1:11 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 543 | July 11, 2021 11:21 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 544 | July 13, 2021 2:00 AM |
Also, anything can happen! Teammates sometimes sabotage you by trying to set your board wrong so you can't even make it to the games. It's especially worrisome when they belong to your own club and have a mother with criminal background... not that I'm talking about Jordan Chiles, or anything!
And also not like I would know what I'm talking about!

When she came back from the dead, Beth C was nowhere near as beautiful and dynamic as she was when Beth returned after she and Phillip divorced. She grew much better with age even though she was far from ugly before. Just…..plain. She didn’t have Judi’s edge. Boy how she came back the 2nd time completely different looks and edge-wise. I don’t think it was all the writing though Beth was assassinated as a character on her 2nd return. I always wondered if Pam Long saw how they wrote her then.
