Androgynous Men's Fashion
'13 Reasons Why' star Tommy Dorfman in Thom Browne at the MTV Awards
Looks pretty sharp but could [italic]you[/italic] pull it off? Would you ever wear something like that? Do you think this will ever become a mainstream fashion trend?
Personally, I just I want to be buried in that capelet.

One reason why. Seriously.

When you’re young, anything is possible. But picture Burt Reynolds in that outfit.

r1 Don't you feel your toxic masculinity melting away just looking at that, though? That could be one possible reason.
r2 Yeah, I agree that age is the main factor here.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | June 17, 2018 2:35 PM

No, r3, I feel no such thing.

I don't like THAT particular style (the exposed shirttails ruin it for me), but I think many men can wear a skirt and look good doing so. It's done so in other cultures, and the men look just fine.

This guy looks cute in his skirt.

The actor has much better legs than the model.
I don't really see it as androgynous as a mash up. Androgynous to me would mean not clearly identifiable to either gender.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | June 17, 2018 2:50 PM

Androgynous dress is perfectly fine. This ultra fashion forward runway designer stuff you almost never see in public.
Perhaps because it’s idiotic.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | June 17, 2018 2:50 PM

No. He looks ridiculous, the outfit is hideous and he doesn't have the legs to pull it off even if it was stylish.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | June 17, 2018 2:50 PM

I’d probably lift it up to peek at what’s under there. Then lean in very closely and mutter to him, “You’re ripe.”

I am not a fashion guy. I'm basically a jeans and t-shirt guy. I don't get "style".
So could someone explain tat kind of fashion show craziness shown in OPs picture?

r7 Androgynous means "possessing qualities of both sexes." Which is exactly what's happening here and is an established fashion term, even though "gender-bending" is used more widely today, especially when people dressing like that are doing it with the express purpose of addressing gender issues in our society. A mashup is just a subset of style, androgynous or otherwise.

r11 Don't you find it aesthetically pleasing, at least? It's sometimes as simple as that.

Kevin came in a skirt as well, looking like a prince. That print is all kinds of gorgeous.

The young men in OP's pic are not androgynous.

The adjective in the thread title refers to men's [italic]fashion[/italic] (a phrase), not to men.

It's bold fashion for bold people. I mean, it's easy to wear conservative clothes and trust they will save you from ridicule and getting chased and bashed by ignorant assholes. When you wear something like Thommy Dorfan does on the red carpet you put yourself out there to be (very likely) ridiculed and judged (for not wearing conservative clothing) by ignorant assholes.

Isn't the guy at r14 Keiynan Lonsdale from Love Simon and The Flash?

It just looks like he forgot his pants.

Agree, R2. Crazy fashions look stupid on the young but because of youth it is forgiven.
The outfits at OP's link manage to make the legs of these guys look ugly. The lines are wrong.

I love kilts but this is ugly.

Fashion is actually for people who don't have style, r11. Style is an outward sign of the development of your personality and individuality. James Dean wore white T-shirts and jeans, and he did it with style. People who can't, or don't want to, develop their own style buy it from the runway.

What's with Tom Brown and designing clothes that look ill-fitting.
That jacket looks too small even if the guy is slender.

I remember they tried a few years ago to make suit shorts. This is just reductive crap. He has nice legs but that dress ruins it.

Thanks to the non-gender conforming movement dresses for guys are a viable option. And I bet it gets some attention on social media meaning more followers.

What is the difference between a kilt and a pleated skirt?
by Anonymous | reply 28 | June 17, 2018 10:46 PM

"Deconstruction" in the most banal, literal sense of the word. Aside from looking stupid, the design theory behind it seems lazy and contrived. As in "oh hey, what if we cut the component parts in half? Oh and add a skirt". Just lazy and trite.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | June 17, 2018 10:56 PM

I kilt would be longer and made of heavier fabric that would not be pleated and would not blow up in a breeze revealing your tackle

What's the difference between a kilt and a pleated skirt? Lift it up... I bet he was wearing underwear.

Does it look any worse when an older gent wears this 'design'?

Andy Mientus wore a similar ensemble to the Tony awards.
I applaud men who take risks with their fashion. Menswear can be so damn dry and boring. We need guys who are willing to spice it up.

The problem is not androgyny in the outfits.
The problem is that the majority of the stuff pictured in this thread have crossed the line from fashion to costume.

Anyone who doesn't think they look either ridiculous or challenged is trying way too hard to appear hip. Absolutely none of those outfits look good.
