Anna Paquin is a pretty lousy actress, isn't she?
I happened to catch a few of her movies on TV in the last couple of weeks and I couldn't believe how wooden she was in all of them. Not much versatility and she constantly has the exact same dead-eyed expression on her face, no matter who she's playing.
I also thought her Oscar for The Piano was undeserved - that was a pretty average performance. If the Academy wanted to go all cute and give kid an Oscar they should have waited another year and give Kirsten Dunst one for Interview with the Vampire. I believe Kirsten was the same age as Paquin was in The Piano, but she acted circles around her.

I feel Ms Dunst ruined Interview With the Vampire. That voice!

She should have gotten an Oscar nomination for the film Margaret. She was that good in it, but unfortunately the film was plagued with delays and fights among the distributors and production company.
And so instead Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) got one of the lead actress Oscar nomination that year instead.
But watch the trailer.

I loved her in Hurly Burly and Squid in the Whale. Tremendous performances.

I'm watching her now in ALIAS: GRACE on Netflix. She's pretty mediocre.

Child actor curse. I loved her in The Piano, but as she grew up she only has two modes: wooden or shrill bitch. She basically screamed her way through Margaret. No charm.

Wow she looks fucking HIDEOUS in that OP. What happened to her? She's even starting to look like a mini Roseanne.

I loved her as a young Rogue in Fox's X-MEN. Her portrayal was unlike the comics or the cartoon, but all for good.
She was an ideal blend of sweet innocence befitting a wench of her age at the time (she was meant to be about 15 and hayseed in the context of the first movie, iirc) and wilful seductive danger as befitting her destructive powers. I absolutely believed she would have a devastating crush on Daddy Logan, and beard up with Bobby Drake just for the kudos. It's just a shame she didn't have more screentime and more to dig into emotionally.

Never cared for her but loved True Blood. I though she was miscast though.

R12's gif reminds me of just how much I did not care for Paquin's portrayal of Rogue in all of the X-MEN movies in which she appeared - a combination both of how the character was written [bold]and[/bold] her acting.

So did she actually secretly date Aaron Stanford for a second there back in 2004 or was it just half-arsed bearding that nobody cared to report on anyway?

I think the Oscar went to her head, especially since she got as a child against adults, and she didn't hone her craft. Hence she's a poor actor as an adult.

X2 is on HBO right now and she's terrible in it.
The only good thing about the movie is when Phoenix is seen at the very, very end!

I hadn't really seen her since she was a child (never watched True Blood) and I'm surprised she grew up so, well...ugly.

she's so dreary. Inspires nothing, the kind of girl you date and all your friends hate but don't tell you then when you break up they all tell you how much they didn't like her. Then you fuck her three more times.

she reminds me of a girl I used to date, Julie. She had really long curly hair, tall, kind of pretty but had a mustache which I tried to overlook but couldn't, and thought she was enigmatic. She would always talk about her former college boyfriend (French, of course) who drove a motorcycle (of course). I don't know why I date her, she always made me uncomfortable, as does Anna Paquin. After a while, I realized I was dealing with someone batshit crazy. When I tried to break it off, she fell to the ground claiming she had a migraine then called her mother, who lived three hours away, to come pick her up, then put her mother n the phone who screamed at me for causing this, not kidding. Believe me, I'm no catch, so this is how nuts crazy this girl was, too, as I was saying, reminds me of Anna - those eyes and demeanor

Paquin is fine. There's time for her to have her own LEAVING LAS VEGAS moment a la Shue. Wiki has it that Anna was the "first Millennial" to win an Academy Award, so that's something (although I thought Millennials were born '85-'95, not as far back as '82?)
Anyway, if I had to pick a favorite popular Antipodean actress it would be Emily Browning.

The issue with Paquin is like a lot of other actors whose natural accents (or languages) are not American (or English). It's not that Paquin can't act, it's that she struggles (and fails) so badly with an American accent that it takes over the performance. The same thing happens with Isabella Rossellini, and especially Penelope Cruz, who is a decent actress in her native language, but cannot act for shit when she's asked to speak English.

Same with Jai Courtney. I have always found him wooden but saw him in a Russell Crowe film using his natural Aussie accent and he was quite good. More loose.

I always think about her husband Stephen Moyer and the flat ass he frequently displayed while playing Vampire Bob in True Blood.
