This iconic event took place 51 years ago today.

"It was the 3rd of June, another sleepy, dusty Delta day........"

Cut to the chase: "Today Billie Joe McCallister jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge".

From the huge #1 hit song by Bobbie Gentry, the haunting "Ode To Billie Joe".

Alright DataLounge detectives, why did Billie Joe jump off the Tallahatchie Bridge? To this day even Bobbie Gentry is coy about this mystery.

she looks marvelous. to the poster who questioned the shoe color - the green one is in the sunlight and the black one is in shadow. the movie version of the song is very homophobic - it suggests that Billy Joe jumped off the bridge because he was conflicted about being gay.

We've been through this a million times.

by Anonymousreply 8June 3, 2018 11:45 PM

Ah, it's that time of year again when we hear how the Tallahatchie Brodge is only 20 feet high and that it collapsed in 1972. And that Choctaw Ridge is an hour away from it.

If that photo at R6 really is her - from any time in the last 10 years - then she is STUNNING. She always was fabulous, and it would be no surprise if she stayed fabulous, even in her privacy.

I wish she'd share her presence with the world again, but respect that she may just want to live a quiet life.

The original Tallahatchie Bridge was demolished in 1987 and a new one built in its place.

R10 Yes, that really is Bobbie Gentry in the photo - she's standing with the man who redecorated her home.

She retired from show business years ago and stays out of the public eye as much as possible.

It is absolutely just a great, great song and Bobbie Gentry was and more than likely remains -- one cool chick.

She was married to Jim "Spiders & Snakes" Stafford for a time, and had a son with him.

R15 Yes, she was married to Jim Stafford for only one year. I always thought that he looked like the handsome boy next door type. Very cute.

For his eyes alone, I'd marry him, too.

by Anonymousreply 17June 4, 2018 3:15 AM

He's a deplorable.

Jim Stafford had a gay themed/sympathetic hit single called "My Girl Bill", and it had a surprising twist ending, but it helped the cause in its own way. I remember buying it back in the 1970's. Cute , witty song.

Who's the handsome dude at R12? Great bone structure.

by Anonymousreply 23June 4, 2018 3:58 AM

I remember watching The Jim Stafford show one summer in the 70's. Ran only one summer and I really liked it.

by Anonymousreply 24June 4, 2018 4:15 AM

Billy Joel was gay.

I once found an obit for a man in Salem, MA. His wedding notice was on the same page. He’d hung himself after the wedding cemetery.
