I suppose it’s the same everywhere - but...

It’s kinda depressing. Years ago I was fucking a guy who was a director (theatre) and who got various teaching and directing at the local State-run acting school here.

Saw a few of his student productions. And at the time he’d point out the really talented young (and sometimes not so young) actors - and then all the pretty boys and girls who would actually go on to make it ‘big’ here - getting roles in soaps, etc,

He was right on the money. I found a couple of the programme booklets for the productions a little while ago - and googled the actors. All the very pretty ones - several of whom were the sons or daughters of pretty, older, established ‘names’ in the business here - all had been cast straight from finishing the course and mostly had good, long runs in soaps and police dramas, etc - and still showed up in stuff now as well as commercials. Many seemed to have ‘production companies’ of their own now too.

The not-as-pretty and connected ones seemed to try and crack the industry for a few years after the course - then disappeared.

It’s kinda sad knowing there was so much talent there - and the ones who ended up with careers were all the whitest, best looking (the more model like the better!) - and best connected.

Like I said - guess it’s the same everywhere - it’s a tough industry!

You gotta wonder why the courses aren’t more open about certain qualifications on their applications. Basically - if you’re male and don’t have a six pack - don’t bother.

It’s so dull.

Saw it happen at a modelling agency a friend ran for years too. Every year there was a big competition held at our equivalent of the state fair.

Her modeling agency would supply talent to model clothes by local labels in parades - and they they had a selection of new young wannabe models - about ten girls and a couple of boys - who would also get to strut their stuff - then get judged and at the end - the lucky winner(s) would get a contract and the chance to have a career.

The judges always picked really interesting looking girls - some of whom went on to quite lucrative careers with lots of runway work in Europe and the uk before ageing out and marrying well or whatever.

The people’s choice/public favourite award was always some blonde Barbie doll looking surfer girl. They were genetically pretty enough - but not exactly runway material. Some of them got plenty of local catalogue work and some tv commercials - and there was quite a lot of similar work in various Asian markets (which was a bit of a surprise to me - didn’t realise how big their appeal was there) - but it wasn’t like they got to set the fashion world on fire.

Most of them gave up after a relatively short time though - it’s actually hard work keeping the weight off and looking healthy and having perfect teeth, hair and nails... it’s not a lifestyle that’s easy when you’re young and pretty and all your peer group is out partying and drinking and eating pizza!
