I didn't know much about Carson, and almost never watched his show, but I read the book his former lawyer wrote about him. I always thought there was no small amount of smugness to him, but, wow, he was really a first class dick. I knew a little about the feud between him and Joan Rivers, but the book gives a great amount of detail, and she comes out smelling cleaner than he does. The book is surprisingly interesting.

'Mercurial' might be the kindest way to describe Paar's antics both in front of and behind the camera. Dick Cavett, who worked for Paar in his younger days, admired the man greatly but didn't mince words when he said he could be volatile, difficult and downright homophobic. Paar actually dedicated a whole chapter in his memoir to Hollywood being degraded by 'fairies' and communists and according to Cavett displayed almost a paranoid sense of homophobia when it came to booking potential guests (who may or may not have been gay). For the Freudians out there: Carson's mother was apparently an absolute nightmare. Not an excuse for wife-beating, be it said. But his relationship with his mother seems to have colored much of his outlook. He didn't attend her funeral, commenting only: "Ding dong, the Witch is dead."

I never thought of Carson as gay. Never thought of any celeb as gay before getting interested in the subject but he sure was inexplicably sour for such a handsome talented guy. I never found him to be very clever or funny though. Some say he was bitter because he was short.

I’ve heard all the horrible Carson stories and I really think I would have to hear something on a Cosby kind of level to really turn on him.
