Meghan Markle receives her own personal Coat-of-Arms

You can’t be the newly minted Duchess of Sussex without a proper coat of arms, apparently.

Less than a week after her wedding to Prince Harry, Meghan Markle has received an official coat of arms approved by none other than the queen herself.

As with her royal wedding invitations, which were printed with American ink, the coat of arms pays homage to the new bride’s American roots.

According to Kensington Palace, the design is both “personal and representative” of her background, with three specific call-outs to her home state of California.

The blue coloring represents the Pacific Ocean, the golden poppies at the bottom are a nod to California’s state flower, and the two golden rays on the shield reference the California sunshine.

The three quills seem to be an appropriate addition for the former actress and calligrapher, as they represent “communication and the power of words.” Interestingly, her father-in-law, Prince Charles, also has three feathers on his official royal badge, which appeared on her wedding invitations.

There’s a royal influence as well, with the wintersweet flowers that grow at her home of Kensington Palace mixed with the golden poppies. The lion featured on the left, meanwhile, is a reference to Prince Harry — whose own royal coat of arms also features a lion as a supporter, which is typically an animal pictured propping up the shield.

The Duchess of Sussex chose a songbird as her personal supporter.

“It is customary for supporters of the shield to be assigned to members of the royal family, and for wives of members of the royal family to have one of their husband’s supporters and one relating to themselves,” Kensington Palace explained in a release. “The supporter relating to the Duchess of Sussex is a songbird with wings elevated as if flying and an open beak, which with the quill represents the power of communication.”

And to think: Most new brides have to settle for a new toaster and some monogrammed hand towels.

The quill feathers were an excellent touch.

That songbird looks a little freakish

by Anonymousreply 10May 25, 2018 9:30 PM

Harry's the lion, R9.

Lol -- nice spin on the color combo. Blue and gold are also the official state colors of California; blue represents the sky, and gold represents the precious metal discovered by the -- wait for it -- gold-diggers during the California Gold Rush.

There needs to be a spin-off thread about what every DLer’s personal coat of arms would be.

by Anonymousreply 22May 25, 2018 11:50 PM

What is a coat of arms, and how do you use it?

by Anonymousreply 23May 25, 2018 11:55 PM

R23, I’m answering without knowing, but I’m imagining it goes on her personal stationery and place cards at official occasions.

But knowing Sparkle, it’ll be a crest on her blazer, gilded into every handbag, made into jewelry, adorning her compact and hairbrush and shampoo bottles and woven into her duvet cover and you get the idea.

I just looked it up and for around $9000, non-refundable, you can apply for your very own arms even as an American, if you have an ancestor who was a British subject and have some professional bona fides. The King of Arms will instruct their heralds to design your arms, with your input, but the final design decision is theirs. A proctologist recently had a colon put on his so they obviously aren’t that strict.

What would your personal coat of arms include?

If a person marrying into the royal family comes from a family without a coat of arms, then the monarchy will design a coat of arms for the incoming bride/groom's family. This was a rarity in that it was designed solely for the bride instead of for her family. I guess she didn't want to share.

Didn't Scott Disick get his own coat of arms on trip to England last year on the Kardashians?

by Anonymousreply 61May 29, 2018 9:22 AM

I doubt Meagain cared one bit about who rode in it once as she climbed into a vintage Phantom IV Rolls on the way to her globally televised wedding. With little talent except for self-promotion, the erstwhile suitcase girl on Deal or No Deal would have crawled to that wedding on her knees if necessary. As it is, on her knees is probably how she auditioned for the job.

Does "poor Meghan" know what she's in for? You bet: riding around in vintage Rolls, E-type Jaguars valued at $500,000, living in luxurious "apartments" in Kensington Palace and, of course, in the not too distant future, in that country home that either Charles or HM will "gift" the couple, sporting expensive jewels and designer clothing, and never cleaning her own toidy again . . . all paid for by someone else.

by Anonymousreply 62May 29, 2018 9:43 PM

by Anonymousreply 63May 29, 2018 9:47 PM

by Anonymousreply 64May 29, 2018 9:57 PM

I think in heraldry, a crown only goes on your head if you are a ruler, and goes somewhere else if you are just a relation of one

by Anonymousreply 65May 29, 2018 10:04 PM

Almost, R65 - Crown on the head for ANY blood member of the Royal family - Harry's figure is to the left of Meghan's in the COA, wearing a crown on it's head.

I have to admit the wheelchair ridden sister reminds me of a bit of Anna Nicole Smith's toothless cousin Shelly who had made numerous appearances on Anna's E! show. The sister has probably always been a cunt and she probably expects people to give her free pass since she's in a wheelchair.

by Anonymousreply 77May 30, 2018 12:25 AM

Yes, a few of Meghan's Black relatives have spoken to the media and given pictures. Her mother's brother is one. I read an interview with him in the Daily Mail, and there were lots of pictures of her with her mother's family.

Other African-American relatives gave interviews and pictures - I think Meghan's step-grandmother, married to Doria's dad, gave a few. Her (the step-grandmother's) son, so Meghan's half-uncle, is younger than Meghan and was said to be close to her. The step-grandmother was outraged that Meghan's uncle didn't get an invitation. Not sure what happened, but that was only a few weeks before the wedding.

[76] "Just a reminder: Meghan didn't invite any of her Black family either"

You think Meagain, after years of straightening her own nappy hair, thinning the end of her nose, marrying white guys, and hanging with the white social set in Toronto, really wanted a bunch of actual Negroes with nappy hair and big lips and broad noses sitting there on her side of the aisle, reminding the Windsors where she really comes from and what happens to her hair if she stops having those Brazilian blow-outs every two weeks? Nah. A sprinkling of black celebs who aren't actually her friends, the bawling black preacher, and the gospel choir were easy flags to raise to her 'heritage". But when we're talking actual DNA, Mum was quite enough.

by Anonymousreply 84May 30, 2018 7:06 PM

Beautiful, and dripping with symbolism, like a coat of arms should. I love the quills. I also love how all of it is based on (feminist and independent) Markle herself, and not her parents, especially her dad.

by Anonymousreply 85May 30, 2018 7:12 PM

Well 84 none of us know how many relatives she would have been allowed to invite. Her father could have gone but he fucked up, so no invite. Her half siblings fucked up, no invite. If you choose a couple of people to attend, who do you choose? Which uncle? Which cousin? Do you do a lottery? How close did she remain to her mother's side? Was she still close with them as an adult or was she only around them when she was a child and her mother took her to visit?

I'm guessing they haven't seen her in years and while they might be perfectly fine with each other, the relationship really isn't one that you invite them to fly for 11 hours to attend a royal wedding. Bottom line, you don't really know what's up but clearly you, like many others, enjoy spewing negativity about this girl out of your pie hole.

by Anonymousreply 86May 30, 2018 7:24 PM

Megs is "Feminist and independent" - are you having a laugh?

The woman gave up everything and will have to do what her husband, brother-in-law and father-in-law tell her to do for the rest of her (probably short) marriage. She will have to walk behind her husband. All of her fame, wealth and power will be based on who her husband is.

Or maybe you're one of these types of "feminists"? Celebitchy, Third Wave "feminists" i.e., Men's Rights Activists' wet dreams.

[quote] Their completely uncritical fascination with the royal wedding suggests that many women, despite their beliefs about gender and class equality, still want to be princesses. The notion of being saved from harsh reality by an exorbitantly wealthy man, and sheltered in a private estate or castle, while being admired for very traditional characteristics such as beauty, grace and elegance is clearly still intoxicating to many. These women dream of marriage as a ticket out of the ordinary lives they have worked to build for themselves. This seems incompatible with any respectable form of feminism. Yes, the wedding was lovely, but it was not a triumph for equality. To marry into an ivory tower yet claim to represent equality is madness. To make such a marriage is to condone inequality in the most public and fundamental sense.

R89 Hell No!

by Anonymousreply 90May 30, 2018 10:36 PM

Now, now, some of you misunderstand the nature of feminism, or rather, of old-fashioned sensible feminism and not the foolishness you hear nowadays. The whole point of feminism was to allow women to have options and to have the freedom to choose between then, not to insist that every woman value career over family. If an old-fashioned feminist chose to marry and be a housewife with kids, that didn't make her any less of a feminist than a CEO or US Senator.

If a woman wants to choose a career as being a dimwitted prince's minder rather than an C-list actress who was about to age out of employability, then that is her choice. And probably a good career move.

by Anonymousreply 91May 30, 2018 10:44 PM

[86] Fair points - but really, not ONE?! There are photos of her sitting around with them later in life, as a teen. If she is close to her mother, does it stand to reason that she has no relationship with a single one of her mother's relatives? Wouldn't that suggest that her mother, also, is estranged from her blood family?!

With the groom's side brimming with his relatives galore: cousins aunts uncles - even the disgraced Fergie - and the bride's side has but one single solitary human: her mother?

I dunno- to me it smells. And I don't think her father fucked up: I don't think he was ever invited. MeAgain didn't want him there - he's no more on brand than the Really Black relatives. If he had been invited from the get-go, it would have been announced much earlier. It was only hastily announced a month or so before the wedding. I agree with those who think that the pap debacle just got MeAgain off the hook. The white half-sibs were never in the running, either.

I wonder if it was another piece of PR by MeAGain - the pathetic little girl with no one in the world but her Mum . . .

You know what the Queen is said to have commented after both Charles' and Andrew's marriages broke up: "This is what happens when you take in two girls from broken homes."

I can't imagine she didn't see red flags over another charming girl from a broken home.

by Anonymousreply 92May 31, 2018 12:10 AM

At Christmas, Harry made a comment that his family was now the family Meghan "never had." She was giving him the orphan story, which, along with the press harassing her just like they harassed his mother story, got Harry hooked.

Harry's comment pissed off relatives on both sides of Megs' family and even some who hadn't spoken before then spoke to the press, outraged that she'd lie about having no family.

Then, according to someone who watched the wedding, during the wedding ceremony, while Harry rattled off all of his half dozen names, she simply said "Rachel Meghan" omitting her last name.

And then of course, Megs asked Charles to walk her partway down the aisle. The father she never had. Soon to become King. Let's hope Charles saw through that move, although who knows - the girl knows how to work men.

Meghan's uncle, her actual dad's brother, said that her dad was not still not invited just weeks before the wedding, so no, R92, I don't think she ever meant for her real father to be there.

A shame since Meghan admits her father doted on her and he spent easily close to half a million on her with all those private schools and trips abroad.

Meghan's narcissism makes her s a lot stronger than Diana; Diana was 19 and whatever she became, in the beginning she was a naive, and genuinely sweet teenager who thought she was living a fairy tale.

Diana also put in the boring work behind her charities, the ribbon cutting and the opening of hospital wards, whereas Meghan has already made it clear that she's not doing the boring shit, but instead wants to jet around the world condescending to all she meets with the glib word salad that pours out every time she opens her mouth.

by Anonymousreply 93May 31, 2018 1:33 AM

Those of us who come from mixed families, where one side is Anglo and the other side is a minority of some sort, often face animosity from the minority side after adulthood, especially if things go well for us. Often, we don't shun them, they shun us.

by Anonymousreply 94May 31, 2018 1:34 AM

R91, you are exactly correct. True feminism is all about choices.

by Anonymousreply 95May 31, 2018 2:14 AM

I don't blame her. The lot- both sides seem like trash.

by Anonymousreply 96May 31, 2018 2:20 AM

Feminism was the fight for equality: equal pay, equal opportunities and against sexual and physical abuse. It was not about the fight to stay home if you choose - you could always do that if your husband allowed it.

This Third Wave "feminist" bullshit that embraces porn, prostitution and centers transgender "women" ( feminist organizations demanding that women not wear pussy hats to a pussy march because transgender "women" were offended = men telling women what to wear) is not true feminism.

Yes, Meghan has the choice to be permanently silenced on matters she purports to care about, she has the choice to walk behind her husband, she has the choice to not be allowed to earn money, but, by making those choices, she is not a feminist.

by Anonymousreply 97May 31, 2018 2:21 AM

Of course the bride is allowed, and expected, to invite family. It's certainly awkward to have the bride's side empty, and it's not a matter of whether or not they show perfect manners - one is usually interested in meeting those of your loved ones' background, and mingling the families. She is from them, even if she doesn't want to admit it.

by Anonymousreply 98May 31, 2018 3:17 AM

Her father's name appeared in the wedding programme that day as the man who was to walk her down the aisle. I think that being the recluse that he is, he never quite intended to go. And in the end, he cashed in like all the rest. Perhaps Meghan deserves our empathy and admiration for rising to the occasion regardless. Perhaps. You need to stop raking her over the coals for her motivations - any other woman would be equally guilty in that respect in some way. The ones who you would NOT accuse of similar motivations refused to marry Harry. So then.......

by Anonymousreply 99May 31, 2018 12:31 PM

R93, Kate also said “Catherine Elizabeth,” omitting the last name, at her wedding. And I agree that Meghan never intended to invite her father and his paparazzi stint gave her a perfect excuse not to. I wouldn’t put it past her to include his name in the programme to make it look like he’s been invited and make herself look good. I hope her father at least got her to pay his medical bills when he agreed to stay away from the wedding and have a surgery.

by Anonymousreply 100May 31, 2018 2:17 PM

R100, I just put this on the Doria thread: Dad Markle has, via his mouthpiece TMZ again, shot down the speculation that he has ever asked Meghan for money or that she has ever volunteered money. Dad says that he and Meghan never talk about money at all.

So Meghan claiming, just before the wedding, that she has helped her dad out with money in the past, is bullshit according to what her dad is saying now.

Dad also has let slide that it was Meghan's idea to ask Charles to walk her up the aisle, which I'd heard before.

No, Dad wasn't invited until the brother let loose with the open letter. Then dad was hastily added to the program only to be disinvited after the pap scandal after which he had a "heart attack" although the Daily Mail, which had his house staked out, said he never left it.

I can see her in him-- I'm serious.

by Anonymousreply 102June 1, 2018 8:20 AM

R97, why do women still feel the need to judge each other? Why do you feel the need to scorn women who choose to be stay at home mothers? While I would never choose that option I respect a woman's right to choose that option. I truly believe that the ultimate failure of ERA was the inability to accept a woman's right to make choices that some women felt was not progressive enough. The Breast Cancer movement is a great example of what women are capable of when we put our differences aside.

by Anonymousreply 103June 1, 2018 12:34 PM

Have some of you never been to a wedding at which you paid attention? The officient does not say either party's last name. Next time stop looking around for your next hook up and listen up.

by Anonymousreply 104June 1, 2018 12:57 PM

Thank you R104, I was waiting for someone to say that. There is a reason first names are called Christian names. I was raised Catholic and I never remember last names used in church, unless it was an announcement or something similar. You’re (allegedly) standing before God, not renewing your driver’s license. He doesn’t need your last name.

by Anonymousreply 105June 1, 2018 1:09 PM

It was the Dad's choice to spend his money however he wanted, although I have a hard time believing it was all on Sparkle. Lighting directors make great money, and he won the lotto. Between his social security (which must be the max) and any union pension, he should be living like a king in Mexico.

by Anonymousreply 106June 1, 2018 3:21 PM

I give Meghan's mother credit for going alone. I can't imagine meeting The Queen and the rest of that family- she must have been terrified.

[quote]The Breast Cancer movement is a great example of what women are capable of when we put our differences aside.

A lot of women with other serious diseases hate the breast cancer movement because of the attention it gets while other cancers or serious illnesses don't get that kind of attention. I've seen it with a few women. A woman I was friends with in college lost her mother to ovarian cancer and she hated when October rolled around with breast cancer awareness/research fundraising walks.

My husband's stepmother had a daughter who has been diabetic since childhood. She hates breast cancer awareness and a lot of organizations attached to it. She felt that there wasn't enough diabetes awareness and research. But, she could be very nasty when she complained or tried to get diabetes fundraisers going. My step-MIL had been an EMT in the town and she had known a lot of town cops and country sheriff's deputies. One year she approached the town and county governments about trying to do some fundraiser where cops raised money for diabetes. The sheriff and police chief both said no as their agencies had their own set fundraising causes like raising money for families of fallen or disabled police officers, raising money to buy toys and other things for children who come into contact with police in bad situations, etc. She got nasty and called them assholes because they didn't want to help with her cause. My step-MIL and her daughter also said nasty things when that ALS Ice bucket challenge was going on.

Some of the causes/movements don't bring women together. They often cause drama with women who are dealing with lesser known issues or they bring ou the nastiness of some women. My husband's step-mom had her moments of niceness and it was clear she wanted to do whatever she could to help her diabetic daughter. But, she was pretty nasty woman and my husband and his sister along with various relatives on the dad's side disliked her because she would throw fits any time she didn't get her way.

The vintage Phantom IV Rolls is the only motor in the stable quite large and imposing enough for a bridal gown transport. Much material. The transport had nothing to do with Wallis Simpson. I know, I asked the driver last week when drinking at The Two Brewers.

Does the mouthy sister want a Negro in chains on Meghan's arms?

by Anonymousreply 114June 1, 2018 6:39 PM

How simple it all is. Meghan "left" her family years ago, remains close only to her mother, who left all the others as well. Childhood photos she is with blacks, yes; for whatever reasons, growing older she left all those half-assed relatives behind. And English wedding programs do not list the father of the bride walking a daughter down the aisle. I'm amazed how you Americans here know so much, and get so much wrong.

by Anonymousreply 115June 1, 2018 6:40 PM

R38, Now let's see …. for me, using terms of artistic licence, rampant, the lion of England, the stag of Ireland as supporters, on an escutcheon a choice, a test tube, a golf club, a letter, a brick, a wagon wheel, a saddle. In a small northwest English village, my father the chemist was born to the village golf pro born to the village postman from Mongahan and father's mother a daughter of a builder, son of a wheelwright, son of a saddler, all of the same address on the Old Liverpool Road. Waiting to hear from the College of Arms, maybe Queen Liz herself.

R24, you have no idea of Meghan Markle. Mother Doria has conducted herself well.

[quote] It was the Dad's choice to spend his money however he wanted,

Christ what is wrong with some of you. He didn't have spend so much. It is the ACT that should always be remembered and appreciated. Stop trying to diminish his generosity to this child.

And Meghan did not leave her dad behind years ago. He visited her while she lived in Toronto IIRC on a number of occasions, I read both her mom and her dad spent Thanksgiving with her - I think Toronto - just a few years ago. Stop excusing "leaving people behind" when you climb your social ladder. As if leaving behind a parent, unless they were abusive, is ever acceptable or decent.

Where did these fawning fangurls for a social media celeb and wannabe "something better" come from. This is no different than the fans of the Kardashians. This one just got a poorer, paler Kanye.

In the beginning, I sort of felt sorry for the wheelchair bound MS sister and her claims about Meghan ditching her because she is in a wheelchair. Now, I don't feel sorry for her at all. The half sister and the half brother are both shady as fuck and they don't get along with each. Wheelchair Sister called the half-brother a low life and I read some article that said the sister is estranged from one of her kids.

Meghan is probably shady as fuck. But, she made out better than her shady half sibs years ago.

by Anonymousreply 122June 2, 2018 2:10 AM

No, I don't think it's just all in a day's work to leave your family behind. It's awful. I can see a lot of Meagan in the lower half of her face, just like I can see her in her dad's face. These apples came from the same tree, and there's no reason to think she has a better temperament- so far, she's behaved abominably.

by Anonymousreply 123June 2, 2018 2:14 AM

R118, "damned Hoity-Toity-haha," boy you well-educated Harvard boys sure have a way with words.

by Anonymousreply 125June 2, 2018 2:46 AM

Eh, I’m no fan of Meghan but some people have toxic parents.

My mother is a nightmare and I have to limit contact with her.

by Anonymousreply 126June 2, 2018 12:11 PM

Nobody argues that, R126. People are just pointing out that Meghan has been talking effusively about being “daddy’s girl,” her wonderful childhood spent on set of the shows where her father worked, his emotional support, etc. Plus it’s reported that he supported her financially all the way through college and the years when she was trying to make her way in Hollywood. And by all accounts, her relationship with her dad was fine up until she met Harry. And now it turns out he’s alcoholic, abusive, and toxic. So either he, conveniently for Meghan, has gone off the rails two years ago, or she’s cut him off since he doesn’t fit with her “great expectations.”

by Anonymousreply 127June 2, 2018 3:34 PM

Samantha Markle. WTF is wrong with her? Did she too have aspirations of being a "star?" Why won't she shut up? SAMANTHA!!!!! The time is 15:08. Your time has past.

by Anonymousreply 128June 2, 2018 4:39 PM

R128 She tried to be an actress back in the 80s and she has an IMDB page which lists a guest acting credit on Matlock.

by Anonymousreply 129June 2, 2018 5:33 PM

[quote]Does the mouthy sister want a Negro in chains on Meghan's arms?

She probably does. I think the entire family including Meghan is fucked up. However,I wouldn't be surprised if the brother and sister had some resentment at their father for having a child with a black woman. The sister gives off that kind of vibe in interviews.

by Anonymousreply 130June 3, 2018 5:48 AM

The resentment may be that he was able to shower Meghan with many things he may not have given his older spawn. That naturally creates resentment. I get that.

And maybe, just maybe, they don't like how she's being ungrateful to their father.

by Anonymousreply 131June 3, 2018 6:59 AM

It does seem, [R131], like Meghan was (for whatever reason) raised as if she were in an entirely different social class from her older siblings: the fancy private schools from pre-school through college, nice clothing, vacations, documentation of her every school play appearance, regular visits to TV show sets—she had a good upbringing as far as raising her for success in her chosen profession goes.

Not sure if all the money and doting was because she was “the baby” of her dad’s family (in his eyes) or what, but I can definitely see how all this would cause animosity and jealousy from the older siblings.

Not saying it’s ”right”, but it’s a very typical human failing...

by Anonymousreply 132June 3, 2018 11:37 AM

R132, That makes a lot of sense. My husband and his sister grew up poor, raised by their single mother. Then she married a wealthy man and the mom had a kid with him. This half sister had a doting father and, basically, everything they never did (riding lessons, $$ clothing, private school). The stepfather gave them all those things, too, but they were teenagers and it was a bit late.

They are all close and get along well, but there’s an undercurrent or resentment and envy because they grew up under radically different circumstances. Frankly, the youngest sister is spoiled and bratty.

And whatever friction there might be, none would ever sell out the others, as those Markle sibs have. That’s private family business.
