This has been discussed TO DEATH by historians. We will never know, short of finding letters or something which make it clear he *was*. It's very unlikely we would ever find letters making it clear he was not.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | May 15, 2018 9:02 PM |
I thought there were some letters or journals

In the 19th Century, people did not think of their sexual behaviour as their identity. They had sex with this person or that person.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | May 15, 2018 9:06 PM |
When I was a kid, I thought he was Jewish. Obviously, I'm the wrong person to ask about his sexual preference.
Hey, I grew up in Brooklyn, not Jewish, but all the men I knew named Abraham were.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | May 15, 2018 9:13 PM |
Not sure, since sexual orientations were not defined in the culture at that time, but I'm sure his predecessor James Buchanan was gay.

[quote] It's very unlikely we would ever find letters making it clear he was not.
Dearest Robert,
The feelings you describe toward your roommate at Harvard, while I’m confident they spring from noble foundations, certainly go beyond what I consider suitable or healthy. You must tell him to cease his unsound importuning at once or you will be compelled to consult the Dean about new quarters. Having never been to Paris, I cannot comment on whether or not the French consider such relationships to be “perfectly normal.” I cannot even begin to imagine what you might infer from his stated desire to “go up into” you, but it sounds disgusting and unnatural.
Tad sends his devoted love and, as for your Dear Mother, well . . . What can I say?
by Anonymous | reply 13 | May 15, 2018 9:21 PM |
Mary, dear, that wreath of flowers is so becoming, did you just win the Kentucky Derby?
by Anonymous | reply 14 | May 15, 2018 9:26 PM |
He would have been what we call a "man lover." The letters he wrote to his dear friend were definitely scandalous.
He married because that's what was expected of him. People need to understand that homosexual men stilled married women in those times because men were groomed to marry and have children.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | May 15, 2018 9:27 PM |
R13, so are we to infer from this Lincoln letter that his son Robert was a demanding bottom? I find this hard to believe. I would think that the son of the president would be a vulgar, nasty top.

Oh, bullshit R10. Not in America, or we wouldn't still be fighting to be recognized as people. It was unthinkable to some people back then. Which is why we have to only guess Lincoln was and don't know for sure.

Power Top. Totally masc!
by Anonymous | reply 19 | May 15, 2018 11:24 PM |
There's no real evidence that Lincoln was gay, just a lot of very silly, outlandish speculation and unsubstantiated gossip.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | May 15, 2018 11:24 PM |
R18 Actually, there was a lot of same-sex sex occurring. It just wasn't seen as being an identity, because sex of any sort wasn't spoken about. Read the letters of South Carolina Governor, Senator, and Congressman James H. Hammond and his lover he met at South Carolina College (now the University of South Carolina) interestingly it wasn't his homosexual relationship, that led to the end of his political career, but a scandal that involved him and his four nieces. It really wasn't until FDR made a huge deal out of sailors frequenting the Art Club and YMCA in Newport, R.I., when he was the assistant Secretary of the Navy in 1919, that there was a true gay panic in this country.

by Anonymous | reply 37 | May 19, 2018 10:54 AM |
Of course he was gay. Yes, they didn’t use the word “gay” in those days, but so what? It would make a world of difference to gaylings all over the country if historians could just come out and say it: One of the best presidents was gay.
No “straight” man of his day or now would rhapsodize of his lover’s thighs! Thats because he wasn’t straight. He was gay.

It really was so different back then, I think he had had more than one male lover. He was extremely intelligent, he did not live by other peoples mores. Sorry I spelled that wrong.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | May 21, 2018 5:41 PM |
Lincoln was a pretty large guy and Mary looked tiny. Maybe they did not fit that well?
by Anonymous | reply 47 | May 21, 2018 5:42 PM |
Well, personally, I think that if no one gives a shit about bisexual dolphins and lesbian seagulls, then no one should care about gay/bi sexual humans!
