It used to be all about Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan when it first started.

But not anymore. They cover any and everybody now. It used to be a big deal to have TMZ cover you. Now it's nothing special.

They gained a lot of traffic when they reported on celebrity deaths like Heath Ledger and Michael Jackson.

The TV show is awful.

Their mobile sites are so full of pop ups and advertising crap that I usually end up shutting it down before it finishes loading all of it.

They’re able to get early scoops especially when a big celebrity dies. That’s their only advantage. It’s real just a tabloid site anymore dedicated to the Kardashian’s and other z listers. I stopped watching the show year and a half ago. Have missed a damn thing . I was flipping channels the other day and saw the same people sitting and standing in the same positions . Christ. Some of those younger ones have been there 10 years and counting . Harvey Levin is such a douchebag anyway.

TMZ was never a celebrity gossip site (or show). It was entirely based on posting awkward photos of celebs to make fun of how ugly/fat/awkward they looked, camping out like vultures waiting for someone to die, posting controversial photos (like Rihanna's badly beaten face) and fabricating incidents and statements. Never about "gossip."

Exploitation was such an integral part of TMZ's business model that after it milked the Anna Nicole Smith tragedy for all it was worth, it stalked Britney Spears day and night in the hopes of pushing her into a mental breakdown and being the first to be there when she either blew her brains out on camera or OD'ed.

So, given all this, I'm really confused to hear OP talk about TMZ being a "straightforward celebrity gossip site." When?

R17, speaking of uncouth and fugly, remember that really fugly blonde woman (Gillian Sheldon) who was on the show in the first two seasons or so? I hated TMZ with a passion but I used to watch the TV show just to hate watch it, and one of the most delightful things was watching that Sheldon, who looked like a fish mated with a pig, piling on a drop dead gorgeous celebrity who was having a bad photo day. Sheldon is such a fuggo that it's very hard to find any pictures of her on the web in spite of having been on TV for two years.

I used to love to hate on the show too, but now its just unbearable, the current fuks are not much better than the above pig..

TMZ is crap now, but I don't think they are known for fabrication like the National Enquirer. They break a lot of stories, but not much more than a headline.

R30, TMZ has a long, established history of fabricating stuff, right from the very beginning. It's even gone so far as to edit footage. The latest blatant fabrication was A Dog's Purpose. It took footage from the shoot and re-edited it to make it look like trainers had shoved a frightened dog into raging waters and nearly caused it to drown.

The reason why TMZ isn't "known for fabrication" is that it's been able to pass off its fabrications as "oopsies", as in, "Sorry, we jumped the gun before all the facts came in, but now the facts are in and here is an update" or "Sorry, it turned out we were duped by our anonymous tips, and you know how those can be."

Plus, people tend to think it has more integrity than it does because of the few times it was able to break a major news story before anyone else.

But having been there from the beginning, I can tell you that it does willfully fabricate stories on a regular basis. It just, like I said, pretends these stories are honest mistakes or that it was blindsided.

For a while TMZ was the same as Perez Hilton and x17online, both of which I never hear about anymore.

It declined around the time D-listed and Perez Hilton became unbearable. I don't know what changed. At first I thought it was just that I got old but I think there's more to it than that.

They've really got a monopoly right now. It's the only celebrity gossip website that people seem to reference.

It doesn't seem like it would be that difficult to compete considering they've evolved into shit.

TMZ is the media mouth piece of the Elite. It's how they indoctrinate the masses into believing what trends they should follow, and the impressionable youth which celebrities they should look up to. The cabal allows Harvey complete access to first hand information and instructs him on what type of spin should be put on the story and the public laps it up. It's social engineering in its purest form.

They used to hold off on breaking stories over the weekend and wait until Monday to get their highest click total. Now the will post "breaking news" anytime and just bump the story to the top all day.

R37 The X17online website has gone all the way to shit. Their site use to be really good back around the time Britney spears was going through her public break down. And when Paris Hilton was out clubbing and getting arrested. And when Lindsay Lohan was a huge name and all of her crazy shit was going on all over los Angeles.

But they still put out there videos on YouTube on the daily. But they have a lot of competition from other paparazzi agencies too. Who also have YouTube channels.

Also Harvey talked about wanting to start a TMZ for Washington D.C. I don't know what happened but that was supposed to be the next big thing Harvey was going to start. He wanted to cover Washington the way he covers Hollywood.

I wonder what happened to that idea. Maybe the powers that be thought that would be to close to home.
