Anyone feel sorry for Rick Astley? I remember back when he was adored for being "the white boy with soul" but now he's become sort of a joke. :-|

The Pointer Sisters-Automatic. Just rediscovered this song again a few days ago and have been playing it ad nauseum over the weekend.

When I heard this in a record store in 1986, I knew I could be free of the shit show popular music turned into starting around 1981. There was still Springsteen. And Linda. And Talking Heads. And Synchronicity by the Police. But for the most part, I was done with popular music.

R62, I posted that video. The video which is only 240p had over 77M hits. It's not his official video upload but I would assume he's still making bank just by the sheer use of this song for Rickrolling. LOL.

The Ramones, Bonzo Goes to Bitburg (My Brain Is Hanging Upside Down). Great anti-Reagan protest song wrapped up like a pop tune.

There were a good amount of great bands and songs during the 1980s.
The Smiths hovever own this thread. The Queen Is Dead is arguably the best album of the 1980s.

Great posts! I'm listening to them one by one. Please share - a memory, a line, a funny incident, an embarrassment - why the song is special when you choose one to post.
Love John Waite's Missing You. Reminds me of a boss who made a pass at me 😨

Our Lips Are Sealed
Go-Go's
I remember faintly hearing this for the first time in the background on my school bus when I was little. I wasn't sure what they were saying, because the bus was so loud, but I remember it was so catchy, beautiful harmonies, cool music. I thought they were saying "how does that feel?" at first, but then later that week saw the video on MTV and figured out what they were saying!

Scorpio Rising, by 10,000 Maniacs.
It was popular on college radio, along with a couple of other songs from the Wishing Chair album, but it wouldn't be until 1987 that the band broke through into the mainstream

The summer of 1980. KISS goes POP! The last time all four original members were together until MTV Unplugged.
I love how KISS come off as cuddly, non-threatening performers like Hall & Oates in this video singing adult contemporary lite music. Time changes everything.

Fantastic song R193. Here's another one from the same album. Wonderful, sexy song but possibly the worst music video made in the 80s, which is quite an accomplishment! Separate Ways looks like Citizen Kane next to this.

by Anonymous | reply 215 | May 10, 2018 1:09 AM |
And I will say this thread has me on a download spree. Pet Shop Boys with West End Girls, Simple Minds with Don't You Forget About Me, Thompson Twins with Hold Me Now, Modern English - with Melt With You, The Fixx with Saved By Zero and One Thing Leads to Another.
What can I say - in 1984 I was 20 years old. I remember all this music.

This was the Pet Shop Boys' best single, and no one can convince me otherwise.
