Princess Di and the "Revenge" Dress
from Marie Claire:
It wasn’t until the mid-90s that Princess Diana really found her style; it was no coincidence that this coincided with her divorce. Gone were the brash colours and exaggerated silhouettes of the 80s, replaced in favour of sleeker, more minimal styles in muted tones.
Perhaps one of her most famous of all was the black Christina Stambolian ‘revenge dress’ she wore to the Serpentine Gallery summer party in 1994, the same night Prince Charles admitted to having an affair with Camilla. Many would have hidden away from the limelight, but she emerged confident as ever.
Diana almost didn’t wear the dress, which she thought was too low cut, and in fact had intended on wearing a Versace gown instead, but was put off at the last minute after a release went out announcing her outfit.

Not on any day of her life, could Camilla look anything close to that!

Gorgeous. So many of her clothes look terrible now but minus the choker that is a hell of a dress. She wore it well.

Her finest moment. A dress that says: FUCK THEM ALL.

The choker makes it - it's based on her engagement ring.

80s fashion was kind of fussy and poofy and full of bright colors. 90s fashion was more streamlined and minimalist. That's why this dress still looks good. It's from the 90s. Big poofy sleeves just don't stand the test of time.

A fragile girl from a broken home, married off at 19 to a conflicted unhappy man in his 30s from the most powerful yet most dysfunctional family in the UK - and possibly the world. What on earth was everyone thinking?
Lady Diana Spencer deserved so much better from those who should have known better. She was most notoriously abused. HRH the Princess of Wales was Royalty's (and the media's) invention. A Frankenstein's monster in many ways: Bulimic and vengeful. But Diana, Princess of Wales as she came to be known - for better and oftentimes for worse (Dodi Fayed?!) - was her own person.
It was an amazing appearance to put in that evening - and I remember it on the News and in the Newspapers. But that period of mutual recrimination was tawdry and pitiful and the whole Diana Chapter in the British Royal Family should never have happened. They "required" a virgin, so the story goes. And she was offered up on the altar of Royal ambition.

This is an exquisitely designed dress. She OWNS it, completely.
We've seen so much high fashion that, by contrast, obliterates the woman wearing it.

And yet I just read an article about how Meghan broke royal protocol by wearing a black dress to the state dinner for the Commonwealth nations.
