Nelson Rockefeller

People often forget that a Rockefeller was once Vice-President of the United States.

He was not a handsome man, but he was a legendary pussyhound, and cheated on both of his famous, formidable, and oddly nicknamed wives, Tod and Happy. He died in 1979 likely in flagrante delicto with an aide in one of his offices. The aide, Megan Marshak, first called a female friend over to the office ask what should be done before she finally summoned an ambulance a full hour after Rockefeller died... which gave birth to the legendary SNL intro comment that week by Don Pardo: "'Emergency!', starring Megan Marshak, cannot be seen tonight in order that NBC brings you the following entertainment..."

Maybe Trump could pull a "Nelson."

Megan Marshack became a national joke at the time. For months after Rockefeller's death, Johnny Carson could just say her name and get an instant laugh from his audience on "The Tonight Show."

She was not a beauty. Very few photos of her exist, and this is one of the few. She was a large-boned and somewhat plain blonde, but she apparently made a huge impression on everyone who knew her with her personality (she was said to be very witty, ambitious, and forceful). She dated the cartoonist Charles Addams not long after Rockefeller's death. She is apparently still alive and is married and lives in California

Did she finish transitioning?

Nelson was actually considered quite good looking for a politician during his prime, right up there with those Kennedy boys.

He was very handsome. What is the wrong with you OP?

Rockefeller likely would have been the Republican nominee in 1964 had he not scandalized the Republican establishment so much the year before by divorcing his first wife and marrying Happy just a month later. It is hard to think that divorce was cosnidered so scandalous in those days, but it as.

Happy was a remarkable woman. She was born into high Philadelphia society and had five children with her first husband. She was a much beloved woman--one of the few women in the high East Coast social and political echelons who was considered genuinely nice and not just formidable.

She also looked like a man in drag, though. Rocky had a definite type...

It was a shameful stretch in American history. Neither the President of the Vice-President were elected. The President was selected by the out going disgraced President Then the President who wasn't elected pardons the President who selected him.

Not even close to George W. Bush stealing office twice.

by Anonymousreply 8April 15, 2018 12:40 AM

Megan was the Monica Lewinsky of her day.

by Anonymousreply 9April 15, 2018 12:44 AM

Didn't Happy relinquish custody of young children after a divorce to be "unencumbered"?

R6, I doubt Rockefeller could ever have been the party's '64 nominee. The base had turned to the right by then, as evidenced by the fact that Barry Goldwater was the nominee that year.

The good old days when the word 'class' had not been taken hostage by the new crowd... and Pop Culture. What was so funny was shows like Dynasty were supposed to be representative of the super rich like Happy and Nelson...Plain and rich was their motto....oh well;...

by Anonymousreply 14April 15, 2018 2:33 AM

When I grew up in the 1950s/early '60s Republicans were the liberals and Democrats were the conservatives. Reagan and Lee Atwater turned all that on its head.

The Rockefeller clan was disappointed that Nelson ran for public office. That was not what they did, it was said; it was the sort of thing they left to other people.

by Anonymousreply 16April 15, 2018 3:46 AM

Yet, R16, his younger brother Winthrop served in the '60s as governor of Arkansas, & his Democratic nephew Jay was a longtime elected official in West Virginia.

by Anonymousreply 17April 15, 2018 4:27 AM

Supposedly Nelson said, "Why do they always schedule elections on Tuesdays? That's the day everyone plays polo."

by Anonymousreply 18April 15, 2018 4:42 AM

r7 I'll take that "shameful" period over our current one any day of the fucking year.

by Anonymousreply 19April 15, 2018 4:44 AM

OP didn't mentioned that by the time the ambulance showed up, she'd re-dressed the former Veep with his shoes on the wrong feet.

Happy must not have been happy about that but Megan got an NYC townhouse for all her hard work.

by Anonymousreply 20April 15, 2018 4:50 AM

Did they ever call him Nellie?

by Anonymousreply 21April 15, 2018 5:00 AM

I don’t believe that Happy was too unhappy about Nelson’s extracurriculars. Less work for mother. Megan was a working journalist in Manhattan for many years: well liked and good at her job.

by Anonymousreply 22April 15, 2018 5:02 AM

Who could forget this?
