Ruby in Paradise (1993)

This is Ashley Judd's first and best lead role in a film. It's an understated, flawed movie, but has a lot of memorable scenes and co-stars.

Full version is on youtube.

Did you see "Ruby in Paradise" in the 90s? What do you think of it?

Good movie to watch if you've ever moved to a city on your own and didn't know anyone.

by Anonymousreply 1April 14, 2018 6:55 AM

I remember Roger Ebert used to just be crazy about this movie.

by Anonymousreply 2April 14, 2018 6:57 AM

You don't get a celebrity relative vibe from Ashley in this

by Anonymousreply 3April 14, 2018 7:16 AM

It highlights Ashley Judd's horrible plastic surgery since then. She looks like she is wearing an Ashley Judd mask now. An exaggerated one.

by Anonymousreply 4April 14, 2018 7:20 AM

Enjoyed this quiet, interesting movie when I first saw it on cable when it was first out. Ashley Judd's only decent performance I've ever seen her do.

by Anonymousreply 5April 14, 2018 7:28 AM

I love it. Such an inspiring movie about independence.

by Anonymousreply 6April 14, 2018 7:32 AM

I loved it. Not a flashy movie or even role, but in its quiet and understated way it sends a message about loneliness and independence. Dorothy Lyman has a good part in it.

by Anonymousreply 7April 14, 2018 7:40 AM

I should watch it again. I remember a friend renting it back in the 90s and I was bored with it but probably just wasn't in the right mood.

by Anonymousreply 8April 14, 2018 7:55 AM

Saw it back in the 1990's and loved it. Definitely Ashley Judd's best performance. Bug is a close second.

by Anonymousreply 9April 14, 2018 9:10 AM

I agree, r1. It’s a perfect slice of life. It gets so much right about that age, like young people submitting to sex out of boredom/so they won’t get fired.

I loved ULEE’S GOLD by the same director, too.

by Anonymousreply 10April 14, 2018 9:29 AM

Judd got a lot of good buzz off this film as well as indie cred, as up to that point she was primarily known as the 'other Judd' who had a supporting role on the series Sisters as Swoozie Kurtz' daughter.

by Anonymousreply 11April 14, 2018 11:23 AM

After not seeing this movie for years, I still remember certain lines like when they talk about low-impact living.

by Anonymousreply 12April 14, 2018 5:09 PM

Naomi moved to different cities and started over again also..

by Anonymousreply 13April 14, 2018 7:42 PM

It seems so low budget and personal while watching it. It's hard to picture a camera crew and others there behind the scenes.

by Anonymousreply 14April 14, 2018 11:07 PM

It was played a lot on IFC, and was big on VHS rental. Before the days everything was released on DVD.

by Anonymousreply 15April 15, 2018 2:17 AM

Ashley Judd was really good in this.

by Anonymousreply 16April 22, 2018 3:16 AM

Thanks OP, I think I'll watch this tonight. I haven't seen it in forever, but remember that it was very good.

by Anonymousreply 17April 22, 2018 3:20 AM

Oh I so loved this movie. It really is the best thing she’s ever done.

by Anonymousreply 18April 22, 2018 3:24 AM

Will always love this movie

by Anonymousreply 19April 22, 2018 3:30 AM

This movie reminds me so much of the late 90s.

by Anonymousreply 20April 22, 2018 3:31 AM

I think Julia Roberts was trying to do something like this with Erin Brockovich.

by Anonymousreply 21April 22, 2018 3:34 AM

R21 or Eat Pray Love

by Anonymousreply 22April 22, 2018 3:36 AM

I love this little film and I have probably seen it 5 times over the years. I had high hopes for Ashley after seeing it, but I think she picked some rally poor projects in which to display her type of acting skills. I too loved Dorothy Lyman as her employer, and the guy who played her boyfriend, who went on to direct "In the Bedroom" was good as a low key lover.

This movie truly gets the feel of the real Florida which is seldom seen in movies. Ulee's Gold did as well. Cross Creek with Peter Coyote and Rip Torn is my favorite real Florida film ever. I liked it so much I moved to where the movie was filmed.

by Anonymousreply 23April 22, 2018 3:41 AM

I'll have to check out Ulee's Gold

by Anonymousreply 24April 22, 2018 3:45 AM

I actually remember seeing this in a theater. I liked it a lot.

by Anonymousreply 25April 22, 2018 3:47 AM

Filmed in Panama City and Tampa.

by Anonymousreply 26April 22, 2018 3:54 AM

There were a couple years when Ashley Judd, like Patricia Arquette, was talked about all the time.

by Anonymousreply 27April 22, 2018 3:56 AM

I think Ruby would approve of Ashley's nasty girl ranting.

by Anonymousreply 28April 22, 2018 5:11 AM

She did work her ass off in this movie. She's in every scene.

by Anonymousreply 29April 23, 2018 12:40 AM

It shows the side of Florida that is really shown.

by Anonymousreply 30April 25, 2018 1:24 AM

I don't follow you R30. What doe you mean, "really shown?"

by Anonymousreply 31April 25, 2018 1:33 AM

R30 rarely shown

by Anonymousreply 32April 25, 2018 1:34 AM

I love the Indian woman neighbor singing at the beginning and the end of the movie.

by Anonymousreply 33April 25, 2018 1:38 AM

Does this Florida still exist, 20 years later?

by Anonymousreply 34April 25, 2018 1:39 AM

Very nice little film depicting a little known slice of life in central Florida. I saw it years ago and always rewatch at every opportunity when broadcast (rarely). Time to purchase.

by Anonymousreply 35April 25, 2018 1:42 AM

It was one of my choices on the 'Employee Picks" shelf when I worked at a video store in Marina del Rey.

by Anonymousreply 36April 25, 2018 1:46 AM

I liked Todd Field in it. I could tell that The White ethnic Judd would become a starfucker. Her biggest conquest being "Daddy".....AKA Jack Nicholson.

by Anonymousreply 37April 25, 2018 1:50 AM

Saw it in the theater when it came out. Remember liking it and Judd's performance very much, but it didn't take her long to use it as a stepping stone to a very boring career.

by Anonymousreply 38April 25, 2018 1:54 AM

I miss the days of natural beauty

by Anonymousreply 39April 25, 2018 2:17 AM

I really liked it.

by Anonymousreply 40April 25, 2018 2:27 AM

Ashley Judd's real name is Ashley Ciminella! She should be proud of her Italian/Sicilian roots.

by Anonymousreply 41April 25, 2018 1:49 PM

There are a lot of stand alone, memorable lines from this movie.

by Anonymousreply 42April 27, 2018 2:02 AM

No love for Bentley Mitchum? Grandson of you know who. Went on to soft core porn in the Different Strokes film with Dana Plato. Should’ve progressed to gay porn.

She’s annoying in everything I’ve seen...any real emotion seems inauthentic, counterfeit. air of arrogance permeates all!

by Anonymousreply 44April 27, 2018 2:22 AM

R44 Wynonna?

by Anonymousreply 45April 27, 2018 2:24 AM

R44 agree. I remember her in her prime in the 90s. Using 5 syllable words just made her sound like an insecure fool rather than intelligent.

by Anonymousreply 46April 27, 2018 2:25 AM

Sorry...no, Ashley...Wynonna very sweet, down to earth and natural.

by Anonymousreply 47April 27, 2018 2:29 AM

She doesn't seem arrogant at all in Ruby in Paradise, regardless of what she did afterwards.

by Anonymousreply 48April 27, 2018 2:31 AM

R48 that’s when she thought her shit stank. Afterwards she became so arrogant and obnoxious I couldn’t stand her. Bitch if you thought you were this brilliant college graduate how come you couldn’t pick one good script?!

by Anonymousreply 49April 27, 2018 2:54 AM

I don't think that Ashley, Naomi and especially Wynonna deny that their shit stinks.

With all those fried chicken livers and chicken fried steaks, state fair battered gizzards and elephant ears, those Judd gals must be blowing it up down south.

by Anonymousreply 50April 27, 2018 3:03 AM

One of the only movies I watch with Ashley Judd

by Anonymousreply 51May 13, 2018 2:01 AM

R51, is she your neighbor? Do you microwave popcorn together?

by Anonymousreply 52May 13, 2018 2:03 AM

Worth watching if you haven't seen it

by Anonymousreply 53September 15, 2018 2:46 AM

My favorite piece of entertainment by any Judd

by Anonymousreply 54October 15, 2018 12:37 AM

I checked out this movie before I moved to the Florida panhandle in 1998. The movie was authentic, it captured the panhandle very well.

by Anonymousreply 55October 15, 2018 12:44 AM

And may I add, it was the time that Ashley was at her freshest and prettiest.

by Anonymousreply 56October 15, 2018 2:00 AM

Datalounge Movie Night!

by Anonymousreply 57August 10, 2019 3:54 AM

Loved it! Saw it in Florida three times when it came out on VCR. Her other best movie is Bug with Michael Shannon.

by Anonymousreply 58August 10, 2019 4:24 AM

Todd Field is cute in this. Just my type.

We just finished watching her as Val Kilmer’s wife in HEAT. (I suppose as young Val Kilmer’s wife I might be in heat, too.) She was very good. What’s that c r a z y one she did as the abused wife who gets revenge?

by Anonymousreply 60August 18, 2019 2:53 AM

Double Jeopardy?

by Anonymousreply 61August 18, 2019 3:05 AM

That’s it!

by Anonymousreply 62August 18, 2019 3:07 AM

Ashley's best moment

by Anonymousreply 63February 29, 2020 4:24 AM

Might as well watch this now. What else you have going on?

by Anonymousreply 64May 21, 2020 2:47 AM

One of the worst movies ever made.

by Anonymousreply 65May 21, 2020 3:54 AM

Watched it last night. It was all right. Fun watching Naomi from Mama’s Family in a different role.
