Did anyone else watch and enjoy the best Soap Opera to ever be put on TV? Had the best looking cast ever. Well except for the Spelling gnome. Plus they actually had a turkey baster story line.
[quote]Had the best looking cast ever.
This.
Yes, used to watch it. Just because of the gorgeous men.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | April 14, 2018 2:14 AM |
Oh wow the turkey baster eps. The black lady who was going to do that would stand at the door of her victim and speak to herself about what she was going to do. She did this many times and it never got old.
How did Randy Spelling not win an Emmy? He really was believable as the son of Lesley Ann Down and Sam Behrens.

I watched it when it first came on and couldn't really get into much and soon gave up on it. I started watching it again in 1998 when things started picking up and watched regularly from then on.
It's too bad they didn't give it more of a chance. I'm assuming it wasn't a cheap show to produce and ratings weren't very good. I've also heard several original (and some popular ones as well) cast members were planning on exiting when their 3 year contracts were up, and that played a part in it being canceled as well.
Nick Kiriazis was my favorite hunk on the show.
I hated Passions with a passion. Couldn't even stand to watch it even if a actor/actress I liked joined the cast.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | April 14, 2018 2:44 AM |
OP: Yes, it premiered in January of 1997 when I was only twelve and I was so disappointed about its cancellation in December of 1999. There were indeed some sexy men, especially Eddie Cibrian as Cole. (Just the sound of his voice got me hot!) Ricardo, Antonio, Gregory, Tim, Casey, Ben/Derek, Eddie...a lot of eye candy, indeed.
Annie Douglas was a superb villianness and I loved her fights with Meg and later Olivia. I loved the campy storylines, including Virginia and the turkey baster!
by Anonymous | reply 5 | April 14, 2018 2:46 AM |
It was also cancelled because of some politics. The daytime chiefs hated Aaron Spelling. The show was so popular all over Europe that several TV stations over there offered to PAY FOR THE PRODUCTION. If they kept the show going. NBC had just had enough of the egos. To much ego for a middle rated soap opera. The mom from Beverly Hills 90210 was on this.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | April 14, 2018 2:49 AM |
R6 That was dumb move by them. I think it had potential to have lasted much longer than it did. It's too bad Spelling didn't try and shop it around elsewhere in the US if stations in Europe were offering to cover production costs.
I head Susan Ward (Meg) was a huge pain and had a huge ego. The crew in particular hated her. She got some outside attention from the soaps because of her looks (especially after she got a big boob job) and thought she was going to become a star in Hollywood. It didn't happen.
Another funny story was Adrienne Frantz (Tiffany) being a pain as well and the final straw was when she got into a fight with Randy Spelling (Sean) and told him he sucked as an actor and he only got on the show because it was his dads show. Luckily for her she landed on B&B and Y&R later on.
Vanessa Dorman (Caitlyn #1) was rumored to have been fired for being difficult as well. The second Caitlyn was a very wooden actress and better looking albeit in a plastic way.
They also apparently thought the actor that played Leo was such a bad actor (can't remember his name - he was that forgettable) was let go because they didn't think he could handle anything that required very much acting. That's really saying something since the others in the teen scene (Sean, Emily, Amy and Brad) were hardly master thespians themselves.
Who else were the ones with big ego's? Eddie Cibrian wouldn't be surprising.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | April 14, 2018 3:18 AM |
Would randy have got the same amount of money per episode as tori was paid on 90210 or were the budgets completely different?
by Anonymous | reply 8 | April 14, 2018 3:21 AM |
Probably complete different budgets. Daytime is much more work than primetime.
Randy wasn't much of his actor, but I'd rate him as better than Tori. His worst acting wasn't as bad hers was and he also not as ugly as her so not as hard on the eyes as she was.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | April 14, 2018 3:27 AM |
My brother and I watched this every day during its first summer. SO MANY SEXY MEN! Meg and Ben were soooo sappy and boring. "Sorry, I've made you cry." "No, these are the good kind." I liked Olivia and Annie. Remember Terror Island??
They tried lots of different things, like putting the whole cast on a doomed ship for a month, or a week where they recapped different characters' life events. But Sunset Beach was ALWAYS the lowest rated show. I don't think it was "serious" enough to compete with ABC and CBS soaps, and fans of ANOTHER WORLD were probably a) leery of finding a new soap and b) resentful of SUNSET BEACH, thinking it should have been cancelled instead of AW.

I saw that Spelling gnome at the grocery store here in Portland a few weeks ago. He looks the same and I swear he still had his late 1990s hairstyle.
God, I loved when they had that shark on the show.

Didn't Eddie C. come back to help wrap up the series after he had already left for prime time. I seem to remember him getting some kudos for that.
A lot of nice looking men, but I might have been partial to him and Tim Adams.

by Anonymous | reply 20 | April 18, 2018 2:42 AM |

It's a long (and incredibly sordid story), R20.

I thought it was so great, but I only ever watched the first 30min before Y&R came on. They even had Barbara Mandrell, when she tried to become an actress after retiring from music.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | April 18, 2018 2:44 AM |
The Brits loved it for the hilarious piece of trash it was. After every episode a voice over announcer guy would comment on what had just transpired and his bitchy one liners were priceless.

Bette Katzenkazrahi (played by the fabulous Kathleen Noone) with niece Annie Douglas.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | April 18, 2018 2:52 AM |
I never got Susan Ward; Meg was a little girl who didn't know how to emote and Ben was a man; he should have been with Annie or even Olivia.
The show was quite good towards the end.
In the beginning Kelly Hu's character had pretty stereotypical parents; the father was always saying 'you a doctah! you a doctah!'
The acting was pretty bad, especially in the beginning.
I can't imagine why an actor/actress would say to the boss' son that he couldn't act. Leaving SB was the best move ever for Adrienne; she landed B&B, won an Emmy and somehow crossed her character over to Y&R.

R17 did Days of Our Lives headwriter James Reilly write the Terror Island storyline based on the success of the Scream slasher movies?
by Anonymous | reply 36 | April 18, 2018 3:17 AM |
Ashley Hamilton was fired because he couldn't keep up with the fast pace of Daytime TV. He was very limited actor (even for this shows standards) and casting him was a mistake despite the publicity they got for hiring George Hamilton's son.
I believe Laura Harring was fired as well. I'm surprised she didn't have a bigger career after Mulholland Drive. She wasn't a great actress but she was gorgeous.
The Turkey Baster storyline was such a trashtastic storyline. I loved batshit crazy Virginia. Annie was probably the best character on the show.
Funny that Sarah Buxton (Annie) was sweet in real life and Susan Ward (Meg) was a cunt.
Kathleen Noone is a great actress and Bette was a fun character. She could even spin the shit Passions gave her into gold.

R36 He pretty much did. He and the other writers liked appealing to the teen and college student viewers and slasher movies like Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer were popular. IIRC, the Terror Island storyline started like a month or two before Scream 2 hit theaters.

R28, they cut her when the show started to realize that having numerous 20 and 30something characters interconnected through work and friendships wasn't going to work.
They needed to start focusing on families so in order to do that they had to cut some characters they weren't going to build families around.
that's my thought.
Sunset Beach sure was Spelling; it was like a daytime version of Melrose or 90210, but soaps have to be about families.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | April 19, 2018 1:01 AM |
[quote]but soaps have to be about families.
Neither GH now The Doctors did core families until later and both were successful with the workplace taking the place of family. Edge of Night also did really have a core family either.

The Doctors had both the Powers and Aldrich families. However, neither family was present when the show first premiered. Matt Powers didn't show up until about 6 months into the show's run. Steve Aldrich didn't show up until 4 years into the run.
On General Hospital, the Hardy family was a prominent part of the show for the first 15 years. And now at 55 years old, there is a still a member of the Hardy family on the show -- Elizabeth Weber.
On Edge of Night, Mike Karr was on the very first episode and the final episode; the Karr family was always represented in Monticello. However, by the end of its run, the show was centered around the Whitney family.

R54 Kathleen Noone was married once. Noone is her married name (O'Meara was her original last name), she kept it after she divorced her husband. He was an actor too. Here's a old newspaper article with a pic of them together. The marriage ended around the time she joined AMC.
She was engaged to Peter Scolari's dad until the time she died and also dated Larry Keith. Although the latter relationship might have been "just for show".
I haven't heard about her being involved with anyone, male or female since the late 80s.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | April 19, 2018 8:25 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 61 | April 19, 2018 9:03 AM |
I think we are confusing the idea of family. You have those big multi generational families like the Hughes, Bauers and Hortons, but that wasn't EON, The Doctors, or GH. Yes, the main characters had a few relatives but the family was the workplace.
What turned me off to Sunset Beach was they did that film look for the first six weeks or something and I didn't like it. I didn't really enjoy the show until Jim Reilly started consulting. Virginia and that turkey baster was the best.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | April 19, 2018 2:44 PM |
We also need to remember most of the shows with "families" were hour shows, many others were half hours that may have had some related folks but not a big "family."

Sunset Beach and Passions were both Soaps for teens. That was when NBC wanted to bring in new, young viewers for their soaps, so they started making soaps for them.
What they failed to realize is that teens are usually in school during the hours those soaps were on.

Susan Ward did get the boob job while on the show. She look a leave on absence to shoot the movie "The In Crowd" but returned after she wrapped filming the movie to finish taping the last 6 weeks worth of shows since it was cancelled while she was on leave. I think she was intending to leave the show anyway once she fulfilled her contract.
During her absence, she was replaced by soap vet Sydney Penny. She was a better actress, but was so different than Ward, it was strange to watch. She didn't have the same chemistry with Clive Robertson as Ward did either.
