this review says exactly what i meant by "boring". It's spot on, sadly
by Anonymous | reply 14 | April 14, 2018 1:48 PM |
the article doesn't say a fucking thing about being boring. Just move on asshole, r13. find something else to dislike.

Who is Grace Jones?
by Anonymous | reply 16 | April 14, 2018 2:06 PM |
I love her and of course her very simple yet fabulous sparkle hat on Tonight Show. Grace was always a master of just giving enough but sending it over the top somehow.

As for the naysayers above, take your 400 dollar tickets to U2 and shove them up your arse.

Grace is beyond time. I've seen her five times live; always fun and amazing.

Great documentary, worth seeing twice. In fact, you'll probably need to see it twice to understand and appreciate it fully. It was artfully filmed and edited, sometimes at the expense of clarity. Scenes begin in medias res and characters are never clearly introduced. The lens is on Grace while the people around her serve as the backdrop to her charismatic presence.
I'll admit, there were points in the theater where I drifted a bit, but not for long, and I think the slower scenes are important to the film's pacing. The musical performances are captivating.
It is very revealing to see her visit family in Jamaica (she moved to Syracuse, NY with her family at age 12), work again with her photographer ex-husband, and produce and perform her music. They did a good job of showcasing both the hard Grace and the soft Grace and it made me want to know even more. I did see it twice.
The first time I saw Grace Jones was during one of her 1980s Johnny Carson appearances. I was around 10 years old and had never seen anything like her, certainly not on Carson. She wore a blue plastic bodice that was very daring for the time.
When I see performers living what seems to be their destiny, I wonder what their life would be like if all of the pieces hadn't fallen into place. She took her strengths and capitalized on them, carving out a very unusual, but authentic, niche for herself. Some people seem to have a gravitational force and she is one of those people.
The ex-husband/photographer whom she says made her "weak in the knees" is a little dork of a man, surprisingly.

^^^"who" she says, not "whom", just in case that bothered anyone.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | May 14, 2018 8:41 PM |
Grace is a tiny woman, too.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | May 14, 2018 9:38 PM |
But she's a giant star! (seen her perform live six times)
by Anonymous | reply 28 | May 14, 2018 9:44 PM |
WOW! She's a LEGEND! So COOL. A STAR! ORIGINAL!!!

Grace Jones is certainly famous, but, I dare ask, was she ever really successful? I know I've heard of her and know some of her songs, but did she have a following large enough to make any money? Was she ever commercially successful in a way that she can still support herself? I'm not being glib; I just wonder if she was one of those performers who were known and copied, but not particularly successful in a commercial sense.

Grace is one of those people like Debbie Harry who will always be icons.

Her son, Paolo, is equally exquisite. Imagine having Grace Jonrs as your mother.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | May 14, 2018 11:46 PM |
So..does she make any money?
by Anonymous | reply 33 | May 16, 2018 3:34 PM |
Grace Jones was before my time, but I've always been intrigued by her.
