OP, it's very common for tabloids to pay (to take off the table) stories about celebrities they like or because the actor has an agreement with them.

I remember one of the tabloids had something nasty on Clint Eastwood and he convinced them to bury it in exchange for him doing an exclusive interview with them. Tabloids might love to attack celebrities but they're star fuckers when the chips are down.
