Semenya, female runner with extra testosterone, wipes out competition at Commonwealth
It's not her fault that she has hyperandrogenism, but her genetic advantage does make a mockery out of the competition.
[quote]Caster Semenya storms to 1500m title but is criticised by fellow runners
"Semenya has hyperandrogenism, a medical condition most commonly affecting women that is characterised by heightened levels of male sex hormones, including testosterone. The IAAF, athletics’ world governing body, has stated it hopes to have revised rules in place by November which will restrict testosterone levels in female athletes. It could mean Semenya will face a decision on whether to take medication to inhibit her testosterone levels or stop competing at elite level.
The Australian 800m runner Brittany McGowan added fuel to the debate around Semenya’s inclusion by suggesting her times and those of others competing in the same races as the South African should not be compared. “It’s a tough one,” McGowan said. “It’s tough for a lot of women in the 800m, 400m and 1500m at the moment to compare ourselves and be judged by our governing bodies on those times.”
Scotland’s Eilish McColgan, coached by her mother Liz McColgan, who won gold at the Commonwealth Games in Auckland in 1990, could manage only sixth. “My mum said to me at 600, you need to be going. But the pace was so fast, I was already going,” she said.

Yes, but can she rock an Ateleir Versace frock like me?
Cause that's what determines who's a woman.

Dishonest
They threw women under the bus
The Guardian and the rest of the media can still not write about it honestly. Boycott them.

She is more than just a " female runner with extra testosterone". She is a biological male, with undescended testicles.

r5 I don't agree with the boycott, but they are being political about this and not reporting the facts. The only reason for it is her medical test results were leaked to the media initially. That was wrong, but if they are now reporting on her using medical diagnoses, then they need to be honest.
Other sports are using testosterone levels as the criterion for assigning gender categories. There is NO reason why any event or body shouldn't do the same.

Dumb complaint. Many different ethic groups are predisposed to certain things based on genetics. This is no different, just more specific to her alone. Get over it

I don’t get it. Seems unfair to eliminate someone who was born with a physiological advantage. That’s called, in other instances, having a knack for something. What’s next? Eliminating basketball players who happen to naturally grow up to heights that are off the charts ? Denying a recording contract to someone whose vocal chords, ears, nose and throat placement give them perfect pitch and an amazing lung capacity?
It’s called talent because you are born with it, people! Testosterone is no different.

Can journalists report actual FACTS about transgenderism?
Does this athlete have male sex organs? Penis? Testicles? All of the above?
Does this athlete have "ambiguous" genitalia and a medical diagnosis of "intersex"? If not, does that not make this athlete NOT female?
Is this athlete a genetic female? XX?

This person should not be in a category with females bodies, female athletes
And if you do not give a shit about this, gay men are next as trans as pushed as acceptable over gay.

R11, if you were talking about a woman who was producing higher than average amounts of testosterone from her ovaries, I would agree. But Semenya's natural testosterone levels are much higher than those that can be produced by ovaries in any conditions. This suggests that she has internal testes. She is intersex. I don't think it's fair for her compete in the female league under these circumstances.

r14 is right.
This is widely accepted in other sports organizations. If I were the female athletes, I'd file a class action lawsuit against the IAAF for allowing her to compete. It's unfortunate that she has to be in the middle of this, it must be hard for her, but this is getting out of hand.

This person was just a test case. The Olympics said they would let men compete in women's events.

Caster Semenya is not transgender; she is intersex. She comes from a village in which this condition is fairly common. Her external genitalia is female, and I assume that if she were actually XY this fact would have been leaked, as other medical information about her has been leaked.

Didn't she undergo all kinds of tests years ago, when this controversy first started? Biologically, she's a female, per their definition, i.e. with female genitalia and IOC can't do much else.

r17 People with her conditions tend to have undescended testicles (which they must remove) and XY chromosomes:
[quote]"They usually find out because their period doesn't start. They do not have a uterus: the vagina ends blind. They have testicles in the abdomen which must be removed or they can become cancerous.Apart from the fact that they can't bear children, they are completely female." Yet these women have XY chromosomes. If sex testing were limited to chromosomes, they would be declared male.

I thought IOC does gender chromosome-based testing these days? Weren't some "female" athletes disqualified in Rio since they failed that test?

R21, all competitive sports organizations should; it would decide and settle the transgender issue. It's not about hate, it's about unfair advantage based on genetic development. Males will develop the lung, heart and musculoskeletal benefits of being male and therefore, ought not to be on a female team. But they know that; it's winning, even when they know they have an unfair advantage, because you're not seeing many cases of women trying to enter competitions as men.

Semenya will retire because otherwise the advantage from the unnaturally high level of testosterone will become too apparent and they won't be able to deny that the wins were through cheating because "she" would have lost every race against the male competitors "she" was supposed to be competing with all along.

A similar case happend in the 1960s in austria were it was discovered that "female" skier Erika Schinegger is a bio male raised as a girl because his genitals were grown inside. It's actually surprising that he managed to pass for so long because even as a "female" he look like a guy in cheap drag.

r26 That guy looks all the way male. He probably had a normal male pubescence, at least as far as hormones are concerned.
Semenya's face at least has a subtle feminine quality to it (I'm not defending her, by the way).

A career as a professional athlete isn’t a right and no one is being deprived of their rights if they aren’t able to compete on a national or international level. She and other intersex female athletes are being given options, rather than banned outright. For now that is the fairest scenario.
