Most ridiculous mass hysteria displayed ever

I nominate the over the top demonstrations of grief when Diana died. I mean it was sad and all, but it's not like she died when visiting a land mine field or something. She died whoring around and it was pretty ridiculous all the media spectacle following her death.

by Anonymousreply 72March 24, 2018 3:50 AM

who gave Camilla the Buck Palace wifi password? off with their heads!

by Anonymousreply 1March 22, 2018 2:21 AM

I disagree. Everything with the monarchy is predictable and highly scripted. The overwhelming global shock of Diana’s death came from the fact that it seemed impossible for such a random and tawdry finish would come to a princess.

It’s actually somewhat similar to the reaction to the death of Princess Grace, coincidentally also in a car accident.

by Anonymousreply 2March 22, 2018 2:24 AM

Y2K!!!!

I don't remember much mourning for her. NOTHING like the Diana spectacle, I'm sure.

John Lennon's death was a pretty big fucking deal. But understandable.

All the idiots who were in shock when Donald Trump won on Election Night. It was glorious watching these elitists who had probably never met a Trump voter in their lives dealing with the fact that Her Highness had lost.

Her disappearance from public consciousness pretty quickly after her death was spectacular.

by Anonymousreply 14March 22, 2018 3:13 AM

I had NO idea Diana of Wales was so freaking popular or relevant!

I honestly thought the over-the-top grief was a total put on. I'm still surprised anybody gave a shit about her.

by Anonymousreply 15March 22, 2018 3:42 AM

R15, the coverage of Diana was non-stop from the moment she got engaged all the way to her death. The wedding was broadcast everywhere (I think). It was a worlwide soap opera with upper class people. We all knew the story so she had our empathy. If she hadn't died tragically, who knows what her reputation would be now. You really can't top her story arc for drama. Shortly after breaking free from her philandering prince, living her new life, bam! A world mourns. Magazines and newspapers covered every angle for many months so you couldn't get away from it. It was SHOCKING.

by Anonymousreply 16March 22, 2018 5:24 AM

What a timely complaint OP and not an obvious ploy for attention at all.

by Anonymousreply 17March 22, 2018 5:29 AM

Diana and JFK Jr were my generation and were THE 'chosen ones' that were followed regularly by the media. In the pre -internet world they had almost ongoing coverage and everyone else was a distant second. As a previous poster said, it was truly shocking to see their sudden end. Both of their deaths came out of nowhere and bothered only in their late 30s.

As cheesy as this sounds I will always feel a little cheated that I didn't get to "get old" with Diana. I would have been so fascinAted to watch her handle William and Kate start their own family. Diana would have just been 52 when George was born.

[quote][R15], the coverage of Diana was non-stop from the moment she got engaged all the way to her death.

& even more so from The Wedding onwards.

The Wedding is what grabbed people's attention, I think.

Probably because she suddenly looked beautiful on the day of the wedding as she hadn't before.

She changed the way the world viewed HIV/AIDS. All of the talking heads in the world couldnt influence and end the hysteria over contact. Diana fixed it. So no OP, millions and millions of people had their minds changed by her. It was a very huge thing. Sad you are too clueless to understand that.

The week after her death was a tine of great mourning. It was palpable in the U.S. It was a shared experience and a time of mass empathy for everyone else in the world who was devastated by her death.

I had been living and working in Silicon Valley for just over 10 years by the time Y2K rolled around and was assured months prior by the engineering teams, and some of the worlds best engineers, that nothing was going to happen. Nothing at all.

But two days before Christmas I flew back to NY as usual to spend the Holidays with my family (leaving the morning of New Years Eve) who ruined it over Y2K. They didn't believe that these engineers I worked with knew what they were talking about and thought if my morning return flight back to SFO was delayed, and I was still on the 6 hour flight come midnight, the plane computer systems would short circuit or explode at the stroke of midnight.

I assured them that of all the people on the entire planet to believe it would be these guys. But nope, my family kept questioning "How do they know for sure?" and my mother insisted "No one knows for sure." Anyway, I got a super cheap flight and the plane was half empty because most people refused to fly that day. And the plane didn't blow up and I landed safely.

by Anonymousreply 27March 22, 2018 7:34 AM

There will be mass hysteria if Oprah dies, especially in the next ten years, worse than Diana. I won't be part of that hysteria for sure but there will be hysteria. But that isn't likely to happen as she's only in her early 60's.

by Anonymousreply 28March 22, 2018 7:37 AM

by Anonymousreply 57March 22, 2018 5:22 PM

I’ll have to go with Diana too. So many people are still all wrapped up in it 20 years later. I see fraus STILL commenting about how hard it was to see Charles step out with Camilla as if they had personally been wronged. I just don’t get how people can get so personally invested in a celebrity.

Sure we are here to gossip and all but it’s just weird when people take it to THAT level.

by Anonymousreply 58March 22, 2018 5:23 PM

Agree with you that the grief was over-the-top, but the "whoring around " comment is pretty dumb - why was she whoring around? Because she had a boyfriend? Get a life.

by Anonymousreply 59March 22, 2018 5:26 PM

There are many, but I'll throw in Beatlemania, especially their first arrival in the US and appearance on Ed Sullivan. Complete insanity.

[quote]I knew she had mental problems but i liked her anyway. Charles, was jealous of her and her popularity.

I read a book by her housekeeper (or someone) who was there for the final years of the marriage, and Di doesn't come across that well in it. This lady (Wendy Berry) says Di was wonderful and warm about one day out of the month, and the rest of the time the house ground to a halt because she was endlessly crying in her room. For, like, DAYS.

I mean, people are allowed to be depressed and cry...but for god's sake, can you get your shit together enough so you don't drag everyone else down with you?? (Especially if you're a parent.)

The War of the Worlds broadcast on Halloween night in 1938. It was a radio drama in the form of a live news broadcast about an alien invasion. A bunch of gullible idiots with no critical thinking skills heard it and thought it was real and panicked. The descendants of these listeners are the people who voted for Trump.

The "Satanic Panic" that happened during the 80s. People actually believed that the U.S. was crawling with Satanists who ritually molested their children in daycare centers and kept young women as "breeders" who supplied them with babies to sacrifice in their dark rites. People actually BELIEVED that. "Survivors" of the Satanic cults (they were forced into them by their parents or whoever) were on talk shows talking about the atrocities they had to take part in and witness (orgies, animal mutilation and sacrifice, cannibalism, babies sacrificed and eaten, drinking urine, eating feces). Geraldo Rivera even did a special, "Satan's Underground", featuring tales of horrific goings on. Later he apologized for the special after it came out that the Satanist hysteria was one big crock of shit. How in the HELL could people believe stuff like that? I guess it some kind of mass insanity.

When Take That split up in 1996 MTV Europe dedicated almost a day to the band and opened phone help lines for the distraught fans. It seemed slightly over the top but I guess I hadn't realized how huge the band really was. It was the One Direction of the time, or even bigger, at least in Europe.

A friend of mine lived in London when Princess Di died, and was among the mourning crowd on the street watching the passing hearse on the funeral day. He said it was all very massively sad and everyone was crying, he as well.
