The Judds
I'm not a fan of country music, and don't know a lot of songs by The Judds, but they are an enigmatic family. Naomi has a sweet reputation, but she has a promiscuous, nomadic past. Ashley doesn't seem to fit into the picture, and doesn't seem to have a great relationship with Naomi now.
Naomi writes in "Love will Build a Bridge" that on tour they always had to go back to "fetch Ashley" from her biological father.
What do you think of The Judds... including Ashley?

Ashley wrote a Mommie Dearest type book saying she was often left alone at home for weeks or days at a time while her mother and sister were out trying to launch their music career.
She described school counselors worrying about her mental health because she had gone a little crazy from the fear she felt being abandoned as a kid.
Her she and Naomi estranged now? didn't they all live on the same compound of land in their own separate houses?

I worked with all three Judds in the 90s and early 00s. Wynonna is terrific and fun; a great soul and a great singer, but a drama queen. She marries dumb guys to make her feel smarter. She's got a major food addition and her weight problem has basically ended her mainstream career.
Ashley is always and annoyingly the smartest person in the room and she loves to let you know it. Loves to "shock" rednecks with six syllable words. She was generally cool and fun back then, but I hear those days are long gone.
Naomi is, to put it lightly, a control freak with everybody, myself included. She rarely spoke to me but when she did it was always to challenge and to be contrary. Like if I mentioned something in the news about Bill Clinton and she was in earshot, she'd go out of her way walk over and suddenly tell me a story about flying on Air Force One with George H.W. Bush. Was she trying to convert me into a Republican? Ha!
It was during the time I worked with them that it was revealed that Wynonna and Ashley are only half-sisters. Apparently, Naomi (real name: Diana) had gotten pregnant from fucking this goober redneck that worked at her dad's filling station. She panicked and immediately turn her attention to a hot rich kid named Mike, began fucking him, passed off the due baby as his, and then eloped with him. A few years later, they had Ashley, which explains why she looks nothing like Wynonna and is pretty attractive. Mike raised Wynonna (real name: Christine) as his own.
When a reporter was about to expose the story of the deceit, Naomi was in a bit of a panic because her narrative was the gospel and she had written in her autobiography and in every press piece every written. When the truth was about to crash down, nobody could understand how anybody could withhold information like that from your daughter for so long. Wynonna was crushed and poor Mike was suddenly thrust into the spotlight. Naomi is a very icy and calculating person to have pulled off a scam like that for decades.
They were performing on a TV show I worked on in LA and I walked by their star trailer, which had an fake grassy area outside for them to lounge as they waited to go on. Both of them were smoking joints. Wonder if she toked up with H.W. on Air Force One.
All this aside, they're stellar performers, all three of them, but a WEIRD family.

A former manager from my record store days with ties to Nashville and the country music scene said Naomi used to cruise around town in vintage cars, decked out like a retro country music queen even before they reall6 broke into the business. Implied she screwed her way into their recording contract. At that time, Ashley was regarded as the “normal” one.

I live in Nashville, and have dealt with both Wynona and Ashley a few times. I used to wait tables, and have waited on Wy a bunch. She could not be sweeter. She holds your hand while she's talking to you, ran out to her car to get me a copy of her upcoming cd. She was not at all what I expected. Ashley is rather cold and you can tell she's pretentious as hell, or at least she was when she was the new star. I would like to assume that getting older has made her less pretentious. I have heard horror stories about Naomi. Even Gerry House, a former incredibly popular country disc jockey has written about how horrendous and cruel she is, especially to her daughters, and he is not the kind of guy who says anything bad about ANYBODY, so it has to be assumed that she is a monster.

After Ashley's book basically exposed Naomi as being a narcissistic climber who would step over anyone to get what she wanted (including trapping an unsuspecting young wealthy guy into thinking he was the father of her child + basically deserting Ashley while she/Naomi chased her dream of being famous), Naomi tried to do damage control by putting out a book last year on her painful childhood and battle with depression. It was so transparent what the real motive was behind Naomi's newest book...
IMO Naomi has a narcissistic personality disorder and is a pathological liar who is always embellishing or outright lying about facts. Both Wy and Ashley hAve paid a big price for having such a dysfunctional upbringing.
Naomi is very damaged based on what her daughters have shared publicly about her over the years. And I don't trust a word out of her mouth.

What preternatural power can prompt Rupert Murdoch, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Richard Dawkins, Neil Simon, Art Buchwald, Frank Gehry and Quincy Jones to sit for hours in a hot room contemplating the nano-sized split ends on gecko toes? ...
...Where else but at TED would Mr. Katzenberg, standing Armani-deep in sawdust with Spirit, his stallion and the namesake of his new animated film, be upstaged by Rex, a biologically inspired robot with springy legs and gecko-like feet capable of navigating the outer reaches of the Amazon — specifically, the leg of the Amazon.com founder, Jeff Bezos, a longtime Tedster?

What a beautiful clip of Is it Over Yet. She does have an incredible voice, and great pitch. It is a shame that songs like that are no longer recorded. To comment on a comment upstream that suggested Wynona's career sank because she gained weight: I think it was more because her music became uncommercial. She stopped recording songs like Is it over yet, and started singing more bluesy Bonnie Raitt-ish kind of songs, and they just aren't played on radio. Once she became more successful, she flexed her muscle a little more, and recorded what she wanted to, and her taste wasn't great or commercial.

Ashley always strained so hard to come across as intelligent and well read. I saw that she recently attended a graduate program at Harvard so clearly she is smart but I've always found it fascinating that she felt such a huge need to indicate to others that she is articulate and well educated. She has always come across as very studied and artificial in her presentation. Always dropping in a $5 word when a standard 25¢ one would do. It's overkill and screams of insecurity.

I thought it was telling that, when they were interviewed before the most recent Oscars, Ashley referred to Mia Sorvino as something like "a fellow Harvard grad." People who are comfortable with themselves do not draw attention to their credentials. I used to work in advertising at a big fashion house, and it was always the most insecure models who wanted to impress you that they went to college and weren't just dumb pretty faces. I thought it was sad, because they thought people were judging them based on their intelligence. Ashley doesn't need to keep bringing Harvard up; she's accomplished what very few people accomplish. She should take delight in that.

I agree with r47 though that her music became very pedestrian. Her first solo album was fantastic - "My Strongest Weakness", "She is His Only Need", "No One Else on Earth". All great songs that complimented her voice.

I wouldn't have thought that Wynonna was a Joni fan, so I'm surprised she covered Help Me. It is in the wrong key for her, though; it's at least two steps above her sweet spot. The arrangement is also way too close to the original, even to the point of having the same drum entrance. You would think she would have changed the arrangement to make it sound more like her. It could have been slowed down, for instance, and been very effective as a Wynonna song. Now it just sounds like someone sang to the original track.

I think Wynnona is an amazing singer and has amazing stage presence (very beautiful and charismatic). She was married to a child molester. Family is definitely dysfunctional but I think they live geographically pretty close to one another.

Not a great video, but gives a good perspective of how Naomi, Wynonna and Ashley all live next to each other in mansions.

Ashley is fucking notorious for being a batshit, constantly lying narcissist.
She inherited Naomi's crazy.

Here is part 1 (of 6) of Oprah's docuseries about the Judds. Wynonna definitely comes off as more likable than Naomi. In part 5, they drive through Los Angeles with their therapist, reliving their time there. Wynonna says she remembers being both left alone and having random people at the house. Wynonna also says that Naomi had an abusive boyfriend and exposed them (W & Ashley) to domestic violence. At that point, Naomi needs to get out of the car and get a chicken wrap and won't talk about it.
I also watched the "Farewell Concert" and noticed that Naomi doesn't bring that much to the table, vocally. She's a glorified backup singer. Wynonna's voice is so powerful and amazing, Naomi is not necessary.
One of Wynonna's ex-husbands is a convicted child sex offender. Wynonna knew it when she married him but thought she could change him.

My brother is a kiddie-diddler, too. But it's pure coincidence - has NOTHING to do with deplorables and / or "Southern culture."

The most lesbians I've ever seen in one place was at a Wynonna concert. Second most was at a Mary Chapin Carpenter concert.
Those were back in the 90s when I was into country music. The only artist I like today is Kacey Musgraves.

I miss Ashley Judd. Weinstein really fucked up her career.

I'm not into country music or a Judds fan, but I would be interested in watching a fly-on-the-wall docuseries based around the compound in Leiper's Fork, Tennessee where they live in separate houses. Different from the touring miniseries with Naomi and Wynonna, where Ashley appeared by name only.
There would be so many passive-aggressive comments, and you know Ashley rules the ranch and sets the overall vibe.
Christmas, summer nights, Sunday morning brunches and dinners would be reality TV gold.
