He was quite active physically at one time and then sustained an injury and required back surgery. He packed on the weight after surgery because he wasn't very mobile during a lengthy convalescence.

R43 you're right, it was Don't trust the B in Apt. 23. I had it confused because the same actress is the lead in both that series and Jessica Jones. He looked puffy and alien, the way he does today, so I guess he retired from acting right after that.

I believe Richard has retired from acting in fact that was one of the reasons he left SG-1 after season 8 was because he had had enough of the business.

Funny enough one of my best friends (who has posted on DL) worked on SG-1 as a production assistant has long said that Richard Dean Anderson was one of the most pleasant actors he ever worked with. He's apparently retired from show business and has become almost a recluse.
