‘Gotham’ Actor Cory Michael Smith Comes Out as Queer
Cory Michael Smith, who plays Edward Nygma (aka The Riddler) on the Fox series Gotham, comes out as queer in a new profile in The Daily Beast of 1985, a new film he’s starring in that takes place during the first years of the AIDS crisis.
The film is about a young man with AIDS returning home to Texas from NYC during the holidays for the first time in years because he knows the same fate awaits him as met his late partner, and he wants to see his family for the last time:
The fear of coming out is compounded by a disease that no one knows much about, that is killing his community, that killed his boyfriend, that he knows will probably kill him, too. This will probably be his last Christmas, and he knows it.
Said Smith: “I’m from Middle America. I’m from Ohio. I’ve been living here [in New York] for a while, and there are stretches when I don’t see my family often. Going home and that whole charade is very familiar. The first family dinner after a while. Coming out to a family, the fear of that.”
Smith, who is 31, said he was “overwhelmed” by the research he undertook to get in character for the film.
He adds: “I don’t ever want to insinuate or push that the queer experience is hindered with shame or darkness and depression…It’s not about connecting gay people with the idea of disease. But I do think it is important to look at the gay experience in the early ’80s and know that it was overwhelmed by disease. It’s a film that is going back to a moment and telling a very personal story about the pain and suffering that certain people went through. Sometimes I think it’s OK to have a moment of silence and consider what that experience was.”

R6 Have you read the interview? He literally talks about his own coming out. How is it even remotely possible to backtrack from this? The only thing he can "backtrack" on is that he's bi instead of gay. He is certainly not straight though, straight people don't come out.

R22 I was getting my undergraduate degree in English when I met most of these people. I've worked as a writer/editor, educator, and research assistant, and am thinking about going to law school or grad school, what should I do? I know that academia is extremely cut-throat, and if I go to grad school I would personally not want to get a Masters or PhD. in English literature even though some of my old professors said that I should.
The one academic I encountered who said he was queer said he was this despite being heterosexual and not trans, because he would write about drugs, and he would endlessly quote Foucault and Derrida.

I agree R61. Queer Nation was formed by members of ACT UP in 1990. In 1996 I attended a national meeting of the Human Rights Campaign in preparation for the 1996 election. It was prior to that meeting that LGB leaders had agree to drop transgender from ENDA because that would guarantee its passage. Of course it didn't. People were still arguing about that decision. So yeah these terms and arguments are hardly the fabrication of millennials. .
I can't explain why I'm gay. I don't think you can even argue that because a man has sex with other means they aren't straight. Certainly we know there are conditions where men will have sex with other men and as soon as those conditions end, they won't. I expect people to accept I'm gay and to believe me when I say it. I don't expect them to demand to explain why I become romantically involved with men and not with women.
I extend the same respect to people who identify as queer and nothing else. For me being queer means not being heteronormative. Which is why I identify as queer and gay.

It's a deliberately ambiguous statement, like Lee Pace, who said he has dated men and women before then stating he was "queer" so he is bisexual then? . It's just people who don't want to label themselves gay or bi for whatever reasons, usually financial / professional.
Later on down the line if he or Pace get a big movie role the can always date a woman for the pr without the threat of being called homophobic, fake or closeted. Queer is a sorta loop hole for gay celebs who want to be out but have the credible option to go back in, it's a new sorta glass closet.
The whole thing is total bullshit.

R78 Why are you so sure that if a man has sex with another man, the only reason he can want to have sex with a woman after that is for a professional or social reason and not romantically or for pleasure? This is a baffling attitude and the same goes for bisexual women except in reverse. People are sure that once a woman tries having sex with a man, she'll reject sex with women.
R79 Hell no, bisexual people get crapped on by both straights and gays. Straight people simply put bisexuals in the same big old perverted box as gays, and gays just seem to hate bisexuals to the point where they deny their existence. Like the old saying goes, if you claim you are bi, you are either confused or lying. A bi man is a liar who is really gay, and a bi woman is just a straight slut.
I'm not sure I like the word queer, though, but I understand why people use it.

R83 The better question is was she his actual girlfriend, or just a beard? Like I have said a million times on this thread and the other one, my guess is he's at the very least bi, as he talks about coming out to his family. Most of the people who come out are either bi or gay (though I'm aware some attention whoring straight "edgy" people use the term too and some of them come out as "queer").

Why are you so sure that if a man has sex with another man, the only reason he can want to have sex with a woman after that is for a professional or social reason and not romantically or for pleasure?

by Anonymous | reply 86 | March 18, 2018 7:59 PM

R86 And everything you said in the previous post would also apply to coming out as bisexual. In fact "no, dude, you are really gay, you only came out as bi to pretend like you still have an option" is the number one thing bi men hear from both straight and gay people.
So what's the difference? At least when you come out as queer, people don't start calling you a liar or claim that being queer doesn't exist.
by Anonymous | reply 87 | March 18, 2018 8:11 PM

R86 Ask him that. I wish he did. Same with Pace, at least Pace clarified it by saying he's dated both men and women in the past. I don't understand why Cory couldn't have said that? It's like everyone on this thread have mentioned: he only did it so it's possible to backtrack. He can go official if he gets a boyfriend, but he can also say in interviews in the future that he was "misquoted" or he didn't mean it [italic]that way[/italic]. It's a cowardly way to come out by not really coming out.
by Anonymous | reply 88 | March 18, 2018 8:24 PM

R86 I forgot to say that although I do believe the only reason he came out as "queer" was for professional reasons, others have their reasons to come out as queer. I don't think bisexual is a good description for the Kinsey 1s or 5s, but I don't feel like queer is a good replacement for bi either. And yes, he could have come out as "queer" because he didn't want to say his relationship with Clarke was fake, if that's what it was.
by Anonymous | reply 89 | March 18, 2018 8:30 PM

Well r87, bisexuality is its own valid sexuality, if someone comes out as bi, then obviously they can have either girlfriends or boyfriends down the line and be totally genuine, no one would call them out on it or at any ate they certainly should not call them out on it.
If Cory came out as bi, there would be no ambiguity and he could go on to date either men or women.

R90 Every thread on DL with the word bisexual in it will prove that people who think like you are in the minority even among non-straights. There is this actor, forgot his name, who is openly bi, actually he talks a lot of about "bi erasure" and yet both media and DL calls him a gay liar all the time.
by Anonymous | reply 92 | March 18, 2018 9:13 PM

R40 exactly that's why I don't like queer and do not use it at all. To many people it's also a slur but I have met gay men who used terms like f____t and faerie, which they claimed were political to them somehow? I asked them, so since I am a bisexual man would calling myself a switch-hitter, or fence-sitter be a political term to you?
R91, yes and Larry Kramer has been batshit crazy for decades, and even likes to revise history claiming that he single-handedly was the only person in the 1980s that did anything for gay and bisexual men who were HIV+ or dying from AIDS.
R92, is it Alan Cumming?
by Anonymous | reply 94 | March 19, 2018 12:07 AM

R94 Yes, I believe that's him, and I believe the reason is that he has a man as a romantic partner now. If he had a girlfriend, people would be a little more inclined to believe him, because in their minds there is absolutely zero reason for a "really straight" man to call himself bisexual. Or perhaps they'd just say he does it to look edgy.
So queer is easier all the way. Bisexual is a lying liar in denial who is going through a phase while fucking anything that moves. You call yourself bisexual but you are now with someone your own sex? LOL finally you admitted it. You. Are. Gay. You call yourself bisexual but you are now with someone of the opposite sex? Get out of my gay bar, heteronormative attention whore. Pansexual is known mostly in the gender-studies circles. Queer is easy and free. He said this a few years ago, so I guess he didn't come out now because he was always out? Either way, what I gather from his statement is that he is probably bi, considering he didn't know what to label himself.
He also doesn't hesitate to complicate his own sexuality, musing, "I think I've labeled myself everything at this point. A psychologist would have a field day with me, which is why I'll never go to one."

He came out as sexually ambiguous which is code for bisexuality. Read between the lines.

R103 That is from the article a few years ago, right? He didn't say anything like that in the interview where he came out as queer, in fact he didn't follow up "queer" with anything, which left people confused if he was bi or gay.

You know what that means bi . For the world they’re in a straight realationship and are fucking men on the side . You have all the perks of being straight and not the backlash of being gay . Gay people fought for acceptance and these bi ‘s have everything . Bi people should be erased .

R106 At least he's sorta out though, many bi people never come out, especially in Hollywood. Sadly I think there's a big chance he will continue to only date women publicly, so he can be perceived as straight despite coming out as "queer". I hope he proves me wrong though. I really want him to go public if he has a bf or gets one in the future.

R109 - let me give you an example. The Kinsey Scale. It's a line. One dimension. The model was based upon the assumption sexuality can be described as a straight line. Then people were placed upon the line. Why start with that assumption? Why limit our thinking to that model. Why assume the only factor in one's sexuality is the level of attraction to the same sex vs. the level of attraction to the opposite sex?
Why not add other dimensions like gender?
When you start adding other dimensions to the model why assume people land on one location and stay there?

Because that's true for 99% of people, R111.

I ran across this profile of him from 2012 when he was doing publicity for the New York run of the play Cock, which was about a bisexual man cheating on his male partner with a woman and was quite controversial for obvious reasons. Anyway, the article was by a gay author in a local gay rag so you would think Cory would be prepared to answer questions about his own sexuality but the interview quickly devolves into farce as he dances around the question to the growing frustration of the author. He became more adept at PR and press management in the years since but he comes across as much more likable and less polished than in later articles. I think he has adopted this queer angle as a better PR tactic to remain vague on his own gayness rather than to just flat out refuse to answer the questions, especially as he has had several gay roles. The Parker Posey and college drag youtube anecdotes were not very subtle digs by the peeved theatre queen who had to spend an entire day with Cory and didn't get to write the coming out piece that he was probably expecting. He probably posts on DL theater threads....

He has really gayed up his Instagram these last few weeks. He has liked a ton of gay or gay related posts. I actually thought he was on his way to clarify his "queer" statement. Then today he liked one of Emilia Clarke's posts. Ugh.. WHY WHY WHY WHYYYYY?! Now all the idiot fangirls will think they're together. Even though he came out. THIS is exactly why I wish he would have come out as gay, if that's what he is. They are clearly trying to heterosexual up his image on Gotham too, making him the love interest of Lee and doing interviews with the actress playing her. This is so fucking annoying. I don't usually like to call anyone a coward, he was brave to come out, but I wish he would have clarified exactly what he meant by "queer", the word can mean fucking anything today. And as I said: the fangirls will believe he's into Emilia now even though a guy took an intimate photo of him in a bed shirtless. Forget all that.. he's TOTALLY STRAIGHT now because he liked Emilia's Instagram post! (Their logic, not mine).

The idiot writers can blame themselves if Gotham gets cancelled. Nobody wants to see the Riddler and Lee hook up, yet here we are. I know she's probably just using him, but the damage is done. They managed to piss off all the fangirls. They had a brilliant opportunity to make Nygmobblepot canon. Riddler and Penguin have amazing chemistry, but nope of course we can't have gays on a comic book show! Lesbians are totally ok though.. of course.

R214 Hopefully, the backlash from the fangirls will get the writers to change the storyline to a bisexual love triangle involving Penguin where Penguin convinces the Riddler that Lee is only using him.
The backlash reminds me of the backlash that the Supergirl cast faced after the cast said that the SuperCorp ship (the ship name of Supergirl and Lena Luther (the owner of L Corp) won’t happen and mocked the shippers at Comic Con. Jeremy Jordan the instigator of the mockery had to apologize twice to the shippers.

R217 All Jeremy did was say that Kara and Lena were just friends in a jokingly manner. And even though Katie and Melissa were part of that, he was the only one that got the massive amount of backlash which forced him into apologizing (for nothing) so the angry lesbians would stop tweeting at him to kill himself.

R218 Why the hell are the lesbians angry?! They have A TON of representation on tv already! So what if one show won't make a character lesbian?! You have lesbians on almost every show these days! Gay male characters.. not so much. Even if a show happens to have gay male characters they are hardly ever allowed to kiss or have sex, unlike the lesbos that get to have sex all the time.

R214 It's hard for the writers of Gotham to please everyone.
Part of the problem stems from homophobic, hypocrital, straight fanboys who threatened to boycott the show if Penguin or Riddler are portrayed as gay characters. The reason that the fanboys give for not accepting the gay portrayal of Penguin or Riddler is that it's different from the original story. The fanboys are okay with making the female characters lesbian because the female characters are not part of the canon. In fact, they are okay with anything that deviates from the original story as long as they don't make the male characters queer.
The Penguin character was introduced in 1941 and the Riddler was introduced in 1948 at a time when homosexuality was illegal so of course the characters couldn't be portrayed as gay or bisexual. Because Gotham takes place in modern times, I think that it's possible to portray the characters as being in the closet and then coming out of the closet.
Robin calls out on the fanboys' hypocrisy and homophobia in the following clip at 0:48.

R227 Clearly, the writers are queerbaiting. Cory was too naive to realize it when he was trying to prove to the fangirls on Twitter that the writers aren't queerbaiting.

R229 Queerbaiting has been seen as an approach by creators to both appeal to the queer market and to "avoid the backlash that comes with writing queer characters." It is done as a strategy to increase profit margins.

Queerbaiting is also a survival tactic that is used in a highly competitive industry.

From Wikipedia:
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) persons in Belize face legal challenges not experienced by non-LGBT citizens. Same-sex sexual activity was illegal in Belize until 2016, when the Supreme Court declared Belize's anti-sodomy law unconstitutional.
Belize also has a law prohibiting foreign homosexuals from entering the country, although the law has never been enforced.[3] However, the court ruling striking down the sodomy law also stated that the Constitution barred discrimination based on one's sexual orientation. The Supreme Court ruling is currently being appealed to the Caribbean Court of Justice.

r234, well, he's not homosexual and 'queer' isn't a sexual orientation, so he's all good.

In the following clip at 25:24, Morena Baccarin mentions that Ben McKenzie got so drunk one evening on his birthday party with the cast members that he sat on Cory’s lap and started feeling Cory’s boobs.
Maybe, Ben is sexually fluid too. After all, he did say that he would fuck Cory when the cast members were playing Marry, Fuck or Kill at R200.

Years ago, Smith was a detestable cock tease to this playwright whose play he was appearing in. He totally led the poor sod on, even hanging out with him at his place, only to leave the guy with a cold dry dick. Smith also played with what he was--bi, maybe, or maybe he was gay or maybe really was bi...a total little douche.

Some of you have gone with this Republican bullshit. Or you write like Susan Sarandon spews shit.
Some of us who are not only hard core dems but to the left of our past presidents and nominees think Sanders is a complete ass. He and his supporters don't want to be Democrats, don't understand why open primaries allow anyone (including Republicans) to come in and fuck up the outcomes and yet he wants to run as a Democrat without trying to work within and transform the party before storming in demanding to be the candidate. Sanders became a Democrat to run for President and then IMMEDIATELY switched back to being an Independent in 2016 and STILL has not switched party affiliations.
So right now, once again, we have to wonder: Will he become a Democrat again and switch affiliations just so he can not have three major candidates? Will he run as a 3rd Party candidate and guarantee a Republican president?
Cory could easily be a HRC supporter. Or a Booker, Buttigeig, Harris or Warrent supporter.
