Conor Lamb interview on Morning Joe
Dear lord, but I'm unimpressed.
Although I am extremely happy that he is the apparent winner, he seems to be extremely lacking in depth and communication skills.
He seemed way over his head, answering fairly simple questions from the panel. He also seemed to give a canned answer of, "I want us to work together."
I'll give him a pass because he's inexperienced, but he seriously needs to do better.

Honestly, all I really need from him is to be hot and a democrat.

Why should we give up our morals, simply because we want some wishy washy Republican to win, rather than a Nazi win? Pardon me but I want to push a liberal.

By the way, did anyone tell Paul Ryan that people are sick of him?
by Anonymous | reply 12 | March 14, 2018 2:03 PM

OP, I thought the same. He was on CNN, Alisyn Camerota was interviewing him. I thought maybe he's really tired, was up all night? Maybe learning how to navigate the media, but he came across almost as rude and irritated he had to answer questions. He offered no sense of who he was, one-two word cursory answers. I thought he would be far more effusive, grateful - instead, cold and, as Op wrote, unimpressive

Have any of you actually watched the interview?
Instead of just giving a knee-jerk reaction, try to apply some critical thinking.
He was calling for Nancy Pelosi to be replaced, but he couldn't even clearly explain why he wanted her to be replaced!
The guy is pretty rough around the edges. He needs a lot of work.
But I agree... a Democratic win, is a Democratic win.

Dear idiots. If you are disappointed that a Democratic candidate closed a 20 point gap in his district because he’s unimpressive in the morning shows, consider this.
The Republican Revolution of 1994 gave us a barrel of boors including Morning Joe.
The Tea Party unleashed a plethora of ignorant hicks. I’ll take Lamb’s cautiousness over an ‘I can see Russia from my front porch’ word salading Palin.
It’s the Democratic Achilles heel. Win elections and then immediately trash the winner.

Conor Lamb campaigned:
1. For universal health care
2. Against Trump’s tax cut
3. For expanded background checks
4. For stronger unions
5. Against cuts to Social Security
6. For a woman’s right to choose
7. For medical marijuana
“Conservative Democrat.” Ok. Cool.

Kudos to R41 and R44 for shutting down Boris' meltdown.
What this shows is that Democrats can win, even in deep red country, WHEN WE ARTICULATE OUR VALUES. Democratic values are American values. We've let the Republicans paint us as baby killers, soft on crime, tax-and-spend, blah, blah, blah.
I wish that the party was out there this morning talking about an agenda to get America back on track: day one, repeal and replace Trump's $Trillion tax giveaway to the 0.1%; strengthening Obamacare; supporting unions, and bringing accountability to Washington DC, starting at the top. It's a winning message, even in Pennsylvania Trump country
Go Conor!

Josh Barro:
There's been a lot of either-or argument over what the future of the Democratic Party should be. Should Democrats seek to build a coalition of college-educated suburbanites plus white urbanites and minorities, or should they try to win back blue-collar white voters who have fallen away from the party in recent decades?
(The Pa-18 election) showed Democrats don't have to choose. Conor Lamb managed to do three things at once:
Maintain gains Hillary Clinton made in affluent, educated suburban areas in 2016,
Regain working-class voters who picked Barack Obama in 2008 or 2012 but rejected Clinton in 2016, and
Win over voters who rejected Obama and Clinton in all three elections.
These results should hearten Democrats and scare Republicans, especially when examined on a town-by-town basis.

R88, see R44.
Beyond that, what I think appealed to enough moderate Republicans was that Lamb explained his positions in clear, simple terms. I acknowledge that when a politician parses their words, it alienates a lot of voters that basically agree with the Democrat's positions. But when you say something like "That depends on what your definition of 'is' is..." you've lost them (not to pick on Bubba, just using the clearest example that illustrates my point).
Listen to Trump's voters. One was quoted in another thread here, saying that he "was a breath of fresh air." Now, we all know that's utter bullshit; no one with Trump experience thinks he's original, thoughtful, or honest in what he says. But he says it with such conviction! Ane he'll say things other people won't. He's carefully crafted a "tell it like it is" persona for TV, and no matter how fallacious or outright wrong he is, they'll believe it... until they won't.
Along comes Lamb, in a religious district, and articulates a nuanced position on abortion that a lot of Democrats agree with but won't say out loud for fear of alienating their friends and associates.
There is a lot of Trump fatigue out there, and one of the lessons of PA-18 is that people like it when you tell them your truth.

Somebody posted upthread that he is for universal healthcare. It depends on how you define UHC -- he's for fixing Obamacare and not single payer.
His is pro-gun. He doesn't believe in an assault weapons ban, but he does support universal background checks, which to me is bare minimum on that front.
He is for fracking and didn't really have a stand on the environment, so I think he's going to be more on the conservative front there.
