I was a big fan of Adam Ant in the 80's, and loved his videos on MTV. His "Strip" video had a low budget, porn quality to it. He neve was that big in the US, compared to Billy Idol and Duran Duran.

He dated Jamie Lee Curtis and Heather Graham
by Anonymous | reply 1 | March 4, 2018 4:32 AM |
I love Ant Music
by Anonymous | reply 2 | March 4, 2018 4:34 AM |
Hell yes I was a fan...he made my young loins all tingly.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | March 4, 2018 4:34 AM |
Fantastic
by Anonymous | reply 4 | March 4, 2018 4:36 AM |
Yes, I thought he was very hot in his pirate's attire.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | March 4, 2018 4:38 AM |
He was a lot less mainstream than the Fraus could handle at the time. Blurring the lines of well defined gender rolls even just a little was a turn off to most of my straight friends at the time. Although, the one time I clicked with a straight guy in my class and became friends was because we both like Adam Ant. Sort of an alternative appeal.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | March 4, 2018 4:45 AM |
I remember buying his biggest hit single "Goody Two Shoes". It was rather an odd song and so was he.
His real name is Stuart Goddard.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | March 4, 2018 4:46 AM |
He's hot. Not many men could pull off that look, and still seem sort of masculine.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | March 4, 2018 4:46 AM |
I had such a crush on him. His was the first concert I ever went to.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | March 4, 2018 4:46 AM |
He was a very rare breed of Masculine Twink.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | March 4, 2018 4:50 AM |
Darby Crash (of the Germs) loved him...His last summer was spent in London, and he came back to L.A. dressed and painted like "ant people".
by Anonymous | reply 15 | March 4, 2018 4:52 AM |
He always had a gay, bisexual vibe but I don't remember hearing people say that about him, like they did with David Bowie.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | March 4, 2018 4:53 AM |
I'm generally into bear guys, but he had a hot face. He's very photogenic.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | March 4, 2018 4:54 AM |
WHET?
by Anonymous | reply 18 | March 4, 2018 5:20 AM |
He still tours!
by Anonymous | reply 19 | March 4, 2018 5:21 AM |
Sorry R8, I don't know what you're talking about. No one thought Adam Ant was blurring any 'gender role' lines because back then, "gender roles" weren't as ridiculously restrictive as they are now. If you want 'gender-bender' from the eighties, you'd have to look ore toward Marilyn, Pete Burns or Boy George. Makeup for men was standard for guys in music and had been since Post-Punk, New Wave, and New Romantics. Very few females of any age had problems with him being 'subversive', despite the S&M stuff he had going on more noticeably before his pirate phase.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | March 4, 2018 5:23 AM |
Very colorful, and no he's not going out for Halloween.

by Anonymous | reply 22 | March 4, 2018 5:41 AM |
Any man that wore makeup and colored braids in his hair would be called gay in the early 80s.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | March 4, 2018 5:45 AM |
What a beauty he was.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | March 4, 2018 6:02 AM |
He was so fun and creative; sorry to read of his mental health challenges.

Hey clueless, what planet are you living on that you think the 80's was less restrictive than today? At the time people like Boy George were not just gender bending, they were shocking to most of America. Comments like "I could tell if that was a man or woman" was what I heard most when they saw Boy George's picture. And not in a cool, whatever floats your boat kind of way.
Adam Ant was not that extreme, he danced around the edge of that while still obviously masculine.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | March 4, 2018 6:43 AM |
I would say it probably depends on your age in the 80s. I think a lot of us kids who grew up with MTV just sort of accepted a certain amount of gender-bending as the norm. Poison actually looked flat-out like women on the cover of their first album. My brother thought it was an all-girl metal band at first.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | March 4, 2018 6:54 AM |
Loved his first album. I was a freshman in college - and listened to it all the time. For sure thought he was gay.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | March 4, 2018 8:23 AM |
He was one hot, hot guy, and really sexy videos. I actually like his music too. 'Strip' remains one of my favorite tunes from the eighties. Few people try to mix sexy and funny like that song did.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | March 4, 2018 8:32 AM |
Did he ever talk about his reference to Tom of Finland in his song Viva Le Rock?
by Anonymous | reply 30 | March 4, 2018 8:44 AM |
There was a brilliantly titled WHET documentary on him and his struggles with mental illness, called "The Madness of Prince Charming." I was a bit surprised that it presented him as straight, I always assumed he was bi. He definitely winked at the gays on Vive le Rock. Then again he wrote at least one song about S&M but says he's not really into that either.
I missed Adam & The Ants when they were on the charts, but discovered them later. I'm still fond of them. Catchy and idiosyncratic, what more could you want from pop music? Gotta love a band with a song called "Pablo Picasso Visits the Planet of the Apes."
by Anonymous | reply 31 | March 4, 2018 10:37 AM |
Hey R26 America is not the entire world. But yes, I'll acknowledge that many parts of America were behind he times even in the eighties. In UK even straight men dressed 'flamboyantly' and wore makeup to nightclubs, See clubs owned by Steve Strange, Billy's . Blitz, Heaven, The Fridge etc for examples. It was not a big deal.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | March 4, 2018 10:39 AM |
He looks like Johnny Depp.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | March 4, 2018 11:05 PM |
Stand and Deliver is memorable to me (one of his hits).
by Anonymous | reply 37 | March 5, 2018 1:15 AM |
Pop music was so fun and colorful back then. I miss those times.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | March 5, 2018 1:23 AM |
Good stuff. I just thought he was one of those femmey Brit acts like Duran Duran or Culture Club.

Pirate Chic
by Anonymous | reply 41 | March 5, 2018 7:49 PM |
I jerked off to him in that pirate costume.
Subtle innuendos follow.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | March 5, 2018 8:15 PM |
He also dated Vanity. She said thry met in Japan and that he was sweet, kind and creative. Prince threw a jealous fit when he found out about it.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | March 5, 2018 9:03 PM |
He was so beautiful.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | March 5, 2018 9:04 PM |
In the big INXS TV movie (mini series?) from a few years ago, Adam is portrayed as an unprofessional, insecure prat.
According to the INXS people, Adam freaked out when his opening act started to outshine him. Adam did whatever he could to undermine their success.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | March 5, 2018 9:32 PM |
Did Adam and Michael Hutchence ever do the homoxs?
by Anonymous | reply 46 | March 5, 2018 10:49 PM |
He is/was not beautiful in any way shape or form!
by Anonymous | reply 48 | March 5, 2018 11:09 PM |
Gorgeous, then and now!
by Anonymous | reply 49 | March 5, 2018 11:13 PM |
I saw him in concert last summer in a 1/2 filled Greek Theater in Los Angeles. That was really sad but he was AWESOME!
by Anonymous | reply 51 | March 5, 2018 11:39 PM |
Remember the awards show where Diana Ross danced out onto the stage in the middle of Adam Ant's act? My co-sistah women and I loved the hottie Adam Ant and never really questioned his sexuality here in NYC. It didn't matter.
"You don't drink, you don't smoke. What do you do?"
I think he's aging nicely.

I loved the Prince Charming video with Diana Dors as the fairy godmother.

by Anonymous | reply 57 | March 6, 2018 9:03 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 60 | March 10, 2018 3:43 AM |
Have you seen Billy dressed as Adam? He looks pretty good.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | March 10, 2018 3:59 AM |
Adam and his band were perhaps at their sexiest in the Vive Le Rock video. Leather jacket and tight vintage jeans, patent leather pants (chaps?), Marco in leather biker cap and gloves. Adam can wear wear the most theatrical, ridiculous clothing and pull it off.
R50's photo is from the same period. He was performing in Joe Orton's [italic]Entertaining Mr. Sloane[/italic] around this time, too.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | March 10, 2018 4:28 AM |
My older brother (straight) was a big fan of punk and post punk and new wave and he had all of the Adam and the Ants and Adam Ant records.
But “Vive Le Rock” was his breaking point. After listening to it once, he gave the record to me on the condition that I never put it on when he’s around, LOL.
Strip was fine but Vive Le Rock was a step too far....

In what way r63?
by Anonymous | reply 64 | March 10, 2018 5:08 AM |
I’m not really sure, R64. I should play Apollo 9 for him one of these days and see how he reacts.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | March 11, 2018 1:43 AM |
People still say "You don't drink, don't smoke, what do you do?"
by Anonymous | reply 66 | March 11, 2018 2:50 AM |
R63 You make me cringe because that was the tour my 15-year-old self went to. God, I thought I was soooooo cool at the time!
by Anonymous | reply 67 | March 11, 2018 3:13 AM |
On his Friend of Foe 1982/83 tour Adam Ant made goo goo eyes at me, to the point that even my friends noticed.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | March 11, 2018 3:38 AM |
Adam and Vanity together = peak 80s beauty!
by Anonymous | reply 69 | March 11, 2018 2:33 PM |
There was a TV series about INXS, r45?
by Anonymous | reply 70 | March 11, 2018 2:43 PM |
Wonderful got some heavy rotation in the 90s
by Anonymous | reply 71 | March 12, 2018 12:35 AM |
I remember him and the band being guests on the Tom Snyder Show. Turnt my little ass OUT. Great tunes, androgynous appeal, sexy dandy new romantic style and ahead of the curve. What wasn't to love? His style informed Prince's style as well as MJ's later on. Kings of the Wild Frontier is still a kick ass album.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | March 12, 2018 1:35 AM |
A real sexy cutie back in the day. And so versatile.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | March 12, 2018 1:55 AM |
R74 you could put Madonna's face onto that picture wearing that outfit and no one would know the difference
by Anonymous | reply 75 | March 12, 2018 2:00 AM |
for the posters who mentioned Vanity, she dated Adam Ant in 1980/81 when she was modeling in Japan before she became Vanity and before she started doing crack. They started messing around again though after she became Vanity and Vanity realized Prince wasn't going to be monogamous to her so she wouldn't be to him too. Vanity was very upset that Prince wanted to be with other women so she went out of her way to make him jealous and Prince was furious. One time Adam Ant was even staying at the same hotel as Prince, Vanity and the other members of Prince's 1999 tour. He threw a fit when he saw them hanging out int he hotel lounge.
Adam Ant even wrote a song about Vanity
by Anonymous | reply 76 | March 12, 2018 2:09 AM |
We would all dance when this came on, even if in the car. We were crazy kids, but they had great songs.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | March 12, 2018 2:21 AM |
A Vanity/Adam Ant sandwich is one of the very few heterosexual threesomes I would enjoy
by Anonymous | reply 79 | March 12, 2018 2:25 AM |
Hot as Fuck.
by Anonymous | reply 80 | March 12, 2018 2:40 AM |
I always loved this track “Wonderful” from the album of the same name. I’m very sentimental I guess, but I like to think he had someone specific in mind when he co-wrote it.

The other day, just by chance, I bought a 45 vinyl single of AntMusic by Adam And The Ants for just 49 cents in a Thrift Store. It's identical to the record in the photo - even made in Australia. It's probably worth some money.

by Anonymous | reply 94 | April 15, 2018 3:56 AM |
In 1999 Ant played a bad guy on a La Femme Nikita episode. Bald and generally old looking he was unrecognizable from what I remembered.
by Anonymous | reply 95 | April 15, 2018 3:59 AM |
I would have loved to see him do something with Billy Idol.
