R317 This is my first comment, so I am not the poster you referenced, but I most definitely do know the political affiliations of my physician and dentist. The same goes for the person who cleans my house, fixes my toilet and whose running shoes I buy.
Today, I believe that it's stupid not to.
I'm one of those gay men who votes with his wallet. You may be a delightful and marvelous human being, so much so that blue birds light on your shoulders as you walk down the street because, hey, you are just that awesome. But if you are voting Republican, or if even all the evidence points to your voting Republican, I'm not going to eat in your restaurant or stay in your hotel. I’m not going to hire you to come fix my toilet or clean my house or file my taxes or polish my teeth. Should our paths cross I will be perfectly pleasant and kind to you, and if you end up as one my clients I will go to the mat for you in court. But I'm not going to support you in any other way because, hey, you're not supporting me.
All my friends, even my straight ones, feel the same way. Frankly, it’s shocking to me that such a thing would be labeled as “tiresome” by another gay person.
To my mind, Supernatural is an absurdly bad show with absurdly bad actors but it entertains the hell out of me. What can I say; I loved monsters as a kid. It's essentially on all morning in Philadelphia and if I'm not in court, which is rare, I'll watch an episode or two. I don't watch the new episodes at night and couldn't even tell you what the actors’ names are.
I don't really get into the lives of actors, especially actors on a program like this one, but if this stuff is true--if people saw on the Los Angeles County Clerk's site with their own eyes that this actor is a registered Republican, that would be more than enough for me, if I were a big fan. I’m not going to stop watching because of that, but I can see how his gay fans would be disappointed.
That seems pretty understandable to me.
And regardless of whether the Duck Dynasty crew is working for him or merely parking their food truck at his business, they are serving food there which creates a nexus between the two. There’s no denying that. Common sense would say that this actor isn’t going to allow something that contentious and possibly financially damaging if he’s not at least mildly complicit in their beliefs.
In the courtroom prosecutors often ask juries to take into account “the totality of the evidence.” In other words, there might not be a smoking gun with the defendant’s finger prints on it, but the circumstantial evidence, when considered in total, is compelling enough to convict. Given that I’m federal defender (a [italic]defense[/italic] attorney), I’d welcome several of you on my jury any day of the week.
Come on down to Philly.
Being a Christian Republican who associates regularly with the people from Duck Dynasty doesn’t mean that you’re a terrible human being. But it certainly ratchets up the possibly that you’re not voting for gay rights and I think that’s why some people are upset.
It’s puzzling to me why people don’t understand that.
