Never liked Sondheim until my heart had been broken a couple of times. Also, dude is genius once I learned to ignore "Send in the Clowns"
Funny, I think Send In the Clowns is his best work ever. Don't like anything else by him.

As relentlessly overplayed as it is, when you see (and hear) Send in the Clowns in the context of the show and, of course, sung by a skilled actress of a certain age and played by a large, sumptuous orchestra, it can be startlingly moving. I always thought it was a 'pleasant' song, but when I finally saw it the context of the larger production (in my case, the fantastic LA Opera production from the mid 2000s with Judith Ivy, Laura Benanti, Victor Garber, Zoe Wanamaker, Michelle Pawk, Marc Kudisch) it 'clicked' and I was surprised to find myself tearing up.

I just started watching "Foyle's War" on Acorn TV. Julian is my favorite part of the show, those lips, that swagger.
