Barbra Streisand Had Her Beloved Dog Samantha Cloned: Meet Miss Scarlett and Miss Violet
For an interview with Variety for this week’s cover story, Barbra Streisand had a caption suggestion. She wanted a portrait taken at her Malibu estate with her three dogs to be called “Send in the Clones.”
This wasn’t just a clever turn of phrase. Streisand revealed that two of her dogs, Miss Violet and Miss Scarlett, were cloned from her 14-year-old Coton du Tulear Samantha, who died in 2017. Before Samantha died, Streisand had cells taken from her mouth and stomach.
“They have different personalities,” Streisand says. “I’m waiting for them to get older so I can see if they have her [Samantha’s] brown eyes and seriousness.”

"Barbra Streisand clones her dogs" is the ultimate parody headline, except it's apparently real.
Yes, R12, the dogs will be old before their time. Dolly the sheep (the first cloned mammal) died aged 6 and a half, even though sheep typically live 12-14 years. The sheep from which she was cloned was six. It seems that Dolly was effectively born middle-aged.

Would you R17? They would look the same but they wouldn't have the same personalities, would they?
I know what you mean. I have a few past pets that were exceptional in the love I felt for them but I just don't think they'd be the same as their previous models and (for me) I don't think that would be fair to the number twos.

Why is it so awful? What is the difference between that and breeding? Just because one is new technology and the other old, what is the difference ? Should we only communicate in person or letter and not by phone, text, email? By the way, I will bet you that Streisand has give more money to organizations like the ASPCA or equivalents than most people have made. She is one of Hollywood's few major philanthropists- much of it given anonymously and of course by her foundation, that anyone can Google and read about who, where and how money is given.
This issue is a bit like genetic engineering (of agriculture) which people think is evil and unhealthy. It's really just facilitate manipulation of genome accomplished by more slowly by selective breeding. Cotons, corn, wheat, barley, vine ripened tomatoes etc... none are natural- all the products of selective breeding . Cloning is another way to produce a plant or animal. That's how I see it. After all artificial means of birth control (rather than no sex) are also not natural. Should we get rid of the pill?

Streisand is hideous, can't act or sing any longer. Suddenly she is social and philanthropic? Give it a rest charlie aka R22. She's always been a narcissistic monster and a woman who lavishes more money on a cloned poodle than she did for her own mother or sister. The best thing about Streisand is that she is completely passe. Nobody cares for her old films or records except the ones who will die clutching them. Late in life she is revealed for who she truly is. Fill in the blanks. Don't fuck with mother nature just because it was so unkind to you Barbara.
Whatever exceptional talent she had disappeared decades before most adults were born. How about a poodle/rose hybrid in off white? Would that be terrific?

She is at once shy but surprisingly warm and candid during our extensive interview. She reveals how she was passed over for directing “Hidden Figures,” how the “vulgar” Weinstein once threatened her, how she scoffed at producer Scott Rudin when he suggested that she film a Broadway production of “Gypsy,” and what movie she hopes to helm after a 22-year break from directing.

She didn’t know about Weinstein’s predatory behavior, although she had a bad experience with him. “I thought he was vulgar,” she says. They had a dispute involving the opening night of his Broadway musical “Finding Neverland.” “He wanted me to come there on his arm and sing a song on the album,” Streisand says. “I said, ‘No. I can’t do that.’” After she turned him down, he threatened not to work with her on future movies and said he wouldn’t be sending her any of his releases to screen at her home. “That kind of stupidity. So I thought he was a boorish guy.”

Has anyone here ever heard of the concept of 'prabhav'? Essentially it means that those essential qualities must be present with others we cannot see in order to be expressed. If you remove an active chemical in a natural compound, for instance, it will not work as well on its own. True beauty and natural appeal is all about this. Ms. Streisand should know this. Taken by themselves, her looks were not attractive: large nose, eyes too close, hair too thin, strange body proportions, squeaky voice. But add in that amazing singing voice and her confidence and you have a package that made her the star she was. Cloning an animal removes all the possibility of those qualities being present. Gene replication, even in twins, always throws in a curve or two for that extra 'something' that some people have and some don't. Cloning is a slippery slope. We lose what makes that organism unique and special, that magic of individual beauty.

More recently, she reveals, she threw her hat in the ring to direct “Hidden Figures,” the Oscar-nominated 2016 drama about NASA women mathematicians of the 1960s. “I wanted to do ‘Hidden Figures’ because that is a great film to me,” Streisand says. “I was sent the script, and I said yes. They gave it to the man who wrote the script [Ted Melfi], and he did a good job. I wish I had directed it.”
Producer Donna Gigliotti explained what happened. “UTA, Barbra’s agents at the time, urged her to read the script,” Gigliotti says. “She liked it, and we had a terrific, wide-ranging conversation about the screenplay. I loved her! But I was pretty far down the road with Ted Melfi. If the timing had been different, the result might have been different.”

I'm still worried about Barbara's little goldfish. Barbara has a koi pond filled with only purple kois to match her garden's color scheme and while giving an interview to a journalist, she spotted the little goldfish swimming with his lavender friends. What about a return to Broadway? “I still have stage fright,” she says. “I’m not going to sing live again. Scott Rudin and Barry Diller wanted me to do ‘Gypsy’ on Broadway and film it. I thought, ‘Are you kidding me?’”
Last year, she revisited her past when she was invited to the set of Bradley Cooper’s “A Star Is Born.” She watched a few scenes being shot, including ones where Lady Gaga plays her former character. “It’s good,” says Streisand. “I don’t want to talk about it because I don’t want to spook it. I can’t believe that was 40-some years ago. I think he did a wonderful job with her.”
Originally, Beyoncé had been in talks for the Streisand role. “I thought when it was going to be done it was going to be very different and have a multiracial cast, and the music was going to be rap,” she says. “But it’s more like the movie I made.”

R22, I am a scientist and actually genetic engineering of plants and cloning are very much related technologies. R22, you know of course that an identical twin, is a clone. Simply means the same genome. Environmental variation acting a gene(s) epigenetics makes for the differences even subtle between the "clones" or twins. Lot of folks on this thread really don't know what they are talking about.

acting on genes (above)- fact is, even identical twins and clones turn out dissimilar because of epigenetics. She can do what she wants of course. But Streisand is a ridiculous and obnoxious person. She can't even give an unscripted opinion on #MeToo without quoting Paddy Chayefsky and a Whitney Houston song? What a freak, control and otherwise.
The funny thing about Streisand is that she's so lacking in sensitivity, always so tone deaf. Joan Rivers and Elizabeth Taylor loved their little dogs as much as anyone. They both had the respect for love and the sense to know that living creatures are not replaced by a clone. Streisand lives in a totally made up and very egotistical world. Do we need to ask if she would clone herself if she could?

1. Miss Violet will cuddle up to Ms Streisand's neck pretending to be affectionate then savagely bite her causing her demise
2. Miss Scarlet will jump on James Brolin as he tries to intervene and bit off his 70 year old penis .
One Day later in the mortuary both Ms Streisand and Mr Brolin will rise off their tables and walk away never to be seen again, until there is a report of a "mass cannibalistic event" at a Super Cuts in Upland . Both are caught on surveillance video eating the arm of a mexican mother and then entering a Ralfs stealing some chips and salsa .

I am R49- sorry- PhD- faculty at a major medical school doing research for 20 years and now faculty at a major university educating health professionals. Its the DNA/RNA that does the replication acquired from a cell. Stem cell research to grow specific tissue is very close to cloning as well. If you need to grow new Islets of Langerhans in your pancreas to cure type 1 diabetes (the technology is quite close) should that too be deemed souless and bad? And how about when we grow new immune systems from donor (stem cells) to cure many cancers- should we stop that?

Streisand on Hello, Dolly!....
Streisand followed up her first film role in “Funny Girl” with 1969’s “Hello, Dolly!” She wasn’t sure if she was the right choice to play the matchmaker Dolly Levi. “I said, ‘Why don’t you hire an older woman?’” Streisand recalls. “I thought I was totally miscast. I tried to get out of it. So many people love that movie. In fact, Ryan Murphy said to me, ‘I watch it every Christmas.’” She’s not as enamored. “I think it’s so silly,” she says. “It’s so old-time musical.”

r86 The singer’s sense of finance has not appealed to everyone, and she has been sued for back fees by her hairstylist of seven years and for royalties by onetime songwriting collaborator Paul Williams. (Both suits were settled out of court.) The most recent complaint comes from Peter Matz, one of Barbra’s hot Broadway Album producers. “The work proceeded on a handshake for 5½ months,” says Matz. “When it was over, the terms we agreed on were drastically reduced for me.” The album, which is expected to sell 4 million copies, could earn Streisand $8 million before the year is out.

r109, I'd wager to say Streisand is a lot happier than they are/were. She's happy cloning her dogs and looking out at the ocean and having a hot husband and being rich. I'd put money on it.

Streisand should have done the world a great favor by cloning Steven Sondheim instead of her dogs!

What a stupid statement - probably 99% of dogs have brown eyes, including this Coton de Tulear breed.

R62 that 'tech' already exists within the pancreas itself. I won't go into tedious detail about the dangers of modern medicine - they are well known. So are the pitfalls of cloning and the limitations of the genome you keep replicating. When you combine DNA from one organism into another, or bio-engineer an organism to withstand a certain poison, you're doing it blindly. You have little to no data to support these efforts as beneficial to either mankind or the environment. You're gambling and playing with fire, but refuse to see the hubris of your attitude or the lessons of a past that is rife with chemical abuse and medical miscalculation. They're there, you'll refute them, and on we go. That is also part of the scientific process.
When modern medicine learns to work WITH the body instead of considering it an enemy, I'll believe you and your colleagues as human beings who care about health rather than an assortment of random people who love all those letters after their name and do things like cloning because they can. Just because something is legal does not make it right. Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should, but no one will stop you as long as you continue to spin illusions about the benefits that are simply not there.
There is an herb, btw, which has the same effect of your so-called tech. It's been used in the East, for thousands of years and they have a very low incidence of diabetes. You don't want to know about it, however, and I won't tell you. You'll just dissect it without understanding or seeking to understand why or how it works. You won't be able to control the sale, so you'll do everything you can to discredit it. We've all been watching, for a very long time, how you work.
History will have fun with you and yours. The rest of us will just have to figure out how to survive the coming world where technology finally subsumes nature. There are many very good things about modern medicine, and the same is true of natural medicines. Much of the world's pharmaceuticals are derived from these sources. We can work together, but not in these times and not when life continues to be attributed, by technology, to mere combinations of acids. Good luck to you.

R110, Streisand has never been and will never be truly happy. Her unhappiness is a bottomless pit that consumes her.
Btw, is the webmaster going to take care of (ban) the anti-semites on this thread? If they were racists, they'd be gone.

Are you fucking kidding? DL is overrun with race baiting threads, lengthy racist posts and racial slurs. Hate Speech. This site is famous for allowing it. As a black gay man I can tell you I encounter it here. Every. Single. Day.

Who is the person in her life who hates her so much that they keep telling her to keep her hair long and parted down the center? Is it James? Jayson? Elliot? Donna?

[quote] None of the huge iconic superstars were happy. Streisand, Michael Jackson, Elvis, Marilyn, Judy, Whitney were all unhappy and most died tragically.
It's nearly impossible to reach that level of stardom and retain your sanity.

Save it R113. My life has been devoted to the wellness of others, and I do not make a lot of money doing it either. Few of us do.
FYI, not herbs that has prevent diabetes in south Asians (who carry a high genetic risk for it) but rather remaining lean. As their diets have Westernized and obesity has become more of a problem- so has diabetes and all forms of cardiovascular disease. It's not an herb that kept them healthy, it was civilization and processed food.

PS, I agree with the above poster that antisemitism on this thread is pretty startling. Sad, and yes DL has just as many bigots posting as there are in the general population- all types from racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia, you name it. The most virulent in my opinion are that anti-trans threads: vicious. Imagine if you were a transgender person reading some of the comments on those threads.

[quote]Producer Donna Gigliotti explained what happened.
Why send Streisand the script if the directing part was more or less promised to the screenwriter? I wonder if she used the script as an excuse to have a meeting. Agents and producers... ugh.

How does James Brolin put up with her. He's not like Gary Morton, James has a career and is good looking.

John Oliver made fun of this last night on Jimmy Fallon.
entertainment.ie:
Oliver took a break from his late night show to visit another - The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon - to have a chat about everything from his upcoming role as Zazu for the live-action Lion King to his extra long hug from Oprah Winfrey.
John is gas from start to finish in the interview but one of the funniest parts is when he starts talking about Barbara Streisand cloning her dogs.
"Last week was so busy, we had so much news, it felt awful that we couldn't spend a long time talking about the fact that Barbara Streisand cloned her dogs," he told Jimmy. "Which is all, deep down, I really wanted to talk about. It's all I really want to talk about now. I'm slightly confused why you've talked about anything else tonight."
John then questioned Jimmy on what Barbara Streisand was like, asking if she was as high maintenance as she appears.
Jimmy tries to divert the question but John's having none of it and hilariously keeps probing.

Yeah she has lots of money. Has anyone checked out how much she has given over the years to the ASPCA?
So what if she clones her dog- after her dog died, she first adopted a rescue, then took on a relative of her dog from the same breeder and finally got the two clones. Why is it selfish if you can afford it and take care of the animals?

I read that next she's having James Brolin cloned so she can enjoy him at his hottest (in 25 years Babs will only be 90 or so). What she got was a fat has-been.
